  • Caught a Fresh Water Eel in Downtown Philly (Skuylkill River) And made some Eel Kabayaki (Unagi Kabayaki). It was good!! The eels were small so I ate them but Do not eat any fish out of there ♡. Next time I'm gonna get some live farm raised eel and do a comparison on flavor! Thanks for watching!

Mark, I'm a big fan. If you ever travel to the Virginia Beach area, let me know and I will take you fishing on my boat. Speckled trout in the Fall; Striped Bass in the winter; Tuna and Mahi in the Spring and summer; Redfish and cobia in the summer. Easiest, most dependable fishing is in the Fall for the Specs. P.S. We use eels for the Striped Bass, so if we don't get into the fish, we could cook the bait for Part II of your eel series.

Hey Mark the water is not as dirty as it used to be in fact there are freshwater mussels growing right at the dam if that makes you feel any better about the water quality

I have early childhood memories of my father peeling the skin off eels using newspapers to get a firm grip. It would then be sliced into chunks and fried in oil. Or stewed in tomato sauce. These were caught out of Long Island Sound I believe.
They make for a vivid impression. Very tough to kill.

If you visit any more dirty bodies of water you can try "purging" the fish by letting them float around in some clean water for a couple hours while still alive. This is often done with filter feeders like clams, oysters, etc. Note this only applies if the river is just gross water, if it's known that chemicals are being dumped into the water then you just shouldn't eat any fish from it or very small amounts at the most. Because the chemicals get more and more concentrated the higher up the food chain you go

The trouble with urban rivers is less the water and more the river bottom. Loaded with PCBs. I think a lot of it is s by product of the industrial days when waste was not as well regulated. The same can be said of the rivers in Pittsburgh, where I live. They are healthy fisheries, with many species thriving. But it's not such a great idea to eat from them. At least not on a regular basis.

I just discovered and subscribed to your channel. Your Philly video on eels is what got my attention. I admire your courage in eating anything that came from the "Surekill" river, but I guess if the fish and eels can live there it can't be too bad. I wish I had known about your channel before hand because in my area of Philly the great fishing places are along the streams in the Pennypack section of the city.

I'm from South Dakota, we prefer walleye. A lot of people think catfish are garbage there, which I disagree with, but I always release them because they have so much personality. They straight up talk to you (sounds like) when they're out of the water.

Woof, I wouldn't eat any residential fish out of the lower Skuylkill, especially not in the city. The river is a lot cleaner than is used to be, and is great for C&R fishing. But there's still a crazy amount of urban runoff, and bottom dwellers like eels and catfish are particularly susceptible to toxin buildup.
Go just a bit east, and you can catch eels from the pinelands in NJ, where the water is very clean thanks to a lack of development in that region. Eels are quite abundant there.

One meal of fish from a river with lots of contaminants isn't going to do any harm but if you lived in philly and ate eels once a week it would be bad! I live in central Virginia, pretty much any creek or river around here has lots of eels, if you leave a piece of cutbait out overnight and check it the next morning it usually has one. They're even up in the trout streams in the mountains here. We are 200+ river miles from the Chesapeake bay, all eels migrate into freshwater from salt. Pretty impressive.
