I actually got a pair of Wii Wheels years before I got Mario Kart. They were found at a yard sale along with a pair of Wii Zappers. After a while, there were threats to get rid of them, but I insisted they stay. A year or so later, I won an auction and got Mario Kart 8. First game I ever bought at auction. I almost always use a Wii Wheel for Mario Kart, for better or for worse. The ergonomics are just that good!

I feel like it's impossible to understand how cool the Wii wheel was if you weren't there when it happened. It's easy enough to explain how it was a novelty and a big gimmick (in a good way), but it's very hard to convey the excitement that came with this plastic circle - it's very much a "if you don't understand I don't think I can explain" thing.

On the topic of stache: I don't think there's enough discussion of the split that happened in Nintendo's brand image of Mario back with Paper Mario. Paper Mario depicts Mario's moustache as brown, matching his hair (as it should be!), and it also depicts the bill of his hat as brown as well. I prefer these changes. Nobody has brown hair and a black moustache.

If I recall correctly, as far as more serious sim-ish racing games go, GRID Autosport is on the Switch!
Not only that, but since the lack of analogue triggers on Joy-Cons and Pro Controllers makes playing this sort of games really hard, they have proper GCN Controller support, and not only did they patch to properly make use of the HORI Pro Deluxe and Mini Wheels but ALSO to add support of the LABO Toy-Con Vehicle Kit Wheel & Pedal.

When I first played Mario Kart Wii in 2009, I always used the Wii Wheel because I just thought it looked cool. A few years later I just used the Wii Remote on its side and thought it actually worked way better (it also helped that I actually got good at the game). Then in high school I switched over to the Wiimote and Nunchuck and haven’t looked back since.

For what it’s worth: Nintendo distributed a few Mario (and friends) branded official Wii Wheels for MK8 via Club Nintendo in Japan, including the one mentioned in the vid from NA’s Wii U Bundle

Seen the 3DS/Joycons wheels, did surprise me when I first saw them going what why! I think the plastic buttons do help for sure by the look. The Hori (proper) wheel peripheral with Mario stuff on it was hilarious to watch someone review as to me it doesn't work as well for Mario Kart as motion controls do especially with an automated control scheme compared to other racing games (Gear Club Unlimited 1&2 and Need for Speed are arcade racers, open world racing games are arcade ones to my knowledge don't know a single simulation one, Grid Autosport, WRC, MotoGP, Ride, Gran Turismo, Forza, in the PC space iRacing, no idea about Assetto Corsa but I know people were annoyed at Project Cars being different but to me it was a case of it being a Need For Speed Shift 3 which Shift was more simulation but PC3 is a bit more arcadey in content and feel than 1&2, they are more your simulation type racing games to compare. There isn't many arcade racers these days though unless you go Indie nostalgia ones (Outrun clones, of may Ridge Racer like ones) or your big name NFS/Forza Horizon, The Crew, TrackMania and such) on Switch. But Wii U always had Need For Speed Most Wanted and that was about the most major you were getting. It looks better and higher quality than the PS2 one that's smaller but similar purpose that I have a Tru Blu wheel.
Then again the Wii U has no Project Cars 1 on it that was cancelled that port so otherwise it was good for kart racers, certain arcadey (your wave race/jet ski style, 3DS got Outrun and many bike games or Spy Hunter being a more vehicular combat game), and futuristic ones that was about it. I guess F1 the cartoony one was there and some arcade top down ones exist that are very retro style but no MotoGP/WRC at all or Sim of other games known from the era. Even the 3DS had one WRC, Ridge Racer, Driver Renegade and Asphalt 3D are apparently bad, a F1 2011 (Vita had 3, 4 & 5 but still compared to the Switch having many entries).
I prefer Wii over 7 though to play though if I had a working Double Dash I'd say that but I have a dead copy. For feel of controls for content not sure.
I think plastic/peripherals did it for sure. I think 'actual peripherals' than plastic shells is better but still the illusion works. You would pretend to drive with the wheel for sure as a kid or understanding a controller.
Ah how we prefer to play not have things automated. XD I find tilting motion controls not that possible in racing games. I think Mario Kart Wii did it well though, from my tests with Need For Speed Nitro on Wii, Gear Club Unlimited 2 on Switch or Gran Turismo 5 onwards with Sixaxis/Dualshock 3s for PS3 and GT Sport on PS4 Dualshock 4s I just can't do it, it doesn't work well for those arcadey or simulation physics/feel for those games unfortunately.
Driving to me is boring IRL regardless of speed signs (gamer first, not into cars but knowledgeable from games aspects about cars. Gran Turismo 3 and Project Gotham Racing 2&3 are my favourite physics in games, but do they have the most realistic physics no they don't even if one is simulation in its tagline it's fun enough assists on and off, tossing a rally car is more fun then other entries or even WRC games for me. The other an arcadey racer with city custom tracks that are well designed and gameplay mode type approach (and Geometry Wars because why not in there) with Driveclub being the closest successor to that) I think real world physics suck over video game physics in simulators and arcadey racing games and I'm not big on most of the maybe 20+ I've played. Driving slower cars is fine in a video game, fast ones vary in fun if the physics are good (i.e. GT3) in real life it doesn't feel great at all for weight, pedals, steering, any of it for the slower cars (I hate Sedans to drive IRL so I go for Hatches IRL but even still they are the least annoying for me to drive).
Driving in a simulation or arcade (I find kart racers boring or the AI cheat) is more fun. I've played Mario Kart Wii and 7 and they are....... Fine.
I prefer other racing games or on the Wii especially Need for Speed Nitro or GT Pro Series (Ubisoft published and made the wheel for that game and others I think, otherwise MTO made good racing games) but still I get why it was popular, I personally find the games fine the feel isn't as fun as Crash Team Racing one of the few kart Racers I can stand (prefer F Zero or WipEout or Redout instead) for me but still.
