AT LEAST with 3D All-Stars, they actually changed things in the games unlike All-Stars on Wii where they didn’t even change the SNES controller graphic to a Wii remote
If you count making the games worse as changing them then sure. Well that's not entirely true Mario Sunshine is an alright version and Galaxy is pretty good but Mario 64 is a pretty mediocre version
Fun fact: the version of Mario World in All Stars + World has a totally different sprite sheet for Luigi, not just a different head shape. He jumps differently, he slides down slopes on his knees, and he shoots fireballs from his mouth instead of his hands. Luigi canonically spits fire.
yeah i really miss the unique sprites of luigi in all seriousness tho, it really is odd that they didn’t include it. sure it adds a game that’s already available on the platform, but that _specific_ version of the game will continue to grow into obscurity.
My theory for why Mario 3D All-Stars is so bare-bones is that Nintendo heard all those rumors about a 3D Mario collection back in 2020, and just quickly threw something together. Probably not the case, but I think it would be funny.
I imagine the game started development earlier than the rumours, but I think the collection was made *because* of COVID, not releasing that year in spite of it.
In hindsight, expecting 3D All-Stars to be a remake is quite unrealistic. It's not like Crash or Spyro where they share somewhat similar game styles between games. At most I can see them originally planned to have Galaxy 2, but that's it.
My theory with the 35th anniversary rumors about a ton of Mario games about to be announced is that the pandemic ruined most of those plans until this year. A new 2D Mario, remakes of the best regarded RPGs, new Princess Peach, Luigi's Mansion port, these would all make sense to announce during said year, along with 3D All-Stars
It’s on record that the pandemic greatly impacted Nintendo’s plans. That said, all the recent announcements from last year are way too late to have ever been planned for the 35th anniversary. Hell we’re almost at 40 now
They handled Zelda's 25th way better. They had a cool golden Wiimote and the fully orchestrated soundtrack of most of the highlights from the Zelda series, even giving so much love to some of the old 2D tracks.
I would agree, except personally I feel the ball was dropped HARD with Skyward Sword, which was marketed as being part of the anniversary (I believe it even says so on the case). Honestly Kirby had the best anniversary on Wii, and I’m not even a big Kirby fan
There is actually a very small 1 line of code difference in the all stars physics of Mario 1 and the lost levels compared to NES that affects it exactly how you describe. Naturally romhackers have fixed it.
The real icing on the cake for the Wii version of All-Stars is that it wasn't even the best version, it didn't have Mario World. I think the best comparison for the Wii All-Stars collection would be the Kirby's Dream Collection on Wii, which had a variety of mainline games from the GB to N64, an "on this year" history section, three episodes of the Right Back At Ya anime, and its own unique version of Return to Dreamland's challenge stages.
I swear the hype for 3D All-Stars was so exciting for me. I remember this was one of the first games I was able to get opening weekend and I was hyped as hell
All I wanted out of this was sunshine and galaxy because sunshine is the game that I grew up with and I was born the same time as galaxy so I haven’t played it even though my grandma had the soundtrack I have no idea where the game went but she had the soundtrack sooooo
@@name_here0 the CD came with a special version of the Wii that came with New Super Mario Bros Wii, not Galaxy though. Idk why they chose the specific bundle but I bet that’s why she had it
Some of the tracks in Super Mario sunshine were actually unable to be stripped from the original game bc the sound effects were put over the tracks, but with the music collection we now have the full raw tracks without any sound effects that may have played during when the song was playing in the games
Same here - I got a SNES and All Stars + World when I was 8 years old. Such a perfect entry into gaming and the next 10 years after was living through the video game revolution.
The original All-Stars (not the Wii port) is still really impressive to me conceptually. They remade 4 different games with really nice visuals. These were all also last-gen games at the time, and you're getting all 4 of them on one cartridge. While the physics are jankier and I think the original versions of each game are more fun, I think the overall package is fairly impressive, at least from a content/quality standpoint. 3D All-Stars to me has always just felt like a bit lazy and unfinished. They have to pad out the menus with each game's music tracks to give the façade that the collection has a substantial amount of content. Sunshine had game dev assets shown because the developers didn't properly hide them in their emulation of it. Every game varies in its aspect ratio, resolution, and frame rate, which isn't incredibly noticeable, but still feels like something that could've been ironed out with more development time. What really sours 3D All-Stars for me though was the pricing model, having it be a limited run. I don't have an issue with them limiting the production of units to cut costs, or eventually halting production due to dwindling interest over time; I mostly have an issue with Nintendo essentially scaring everyone into pre-ordering as fast as possible to beat the scalpers, especially because of how bad scalpers were during the pandemic era. I don't want to assume Nintendo had ill-intent in this situation, but it does come across as an attempt to boost their fiscal quarter rather than how they framed it as "oh, we're limiting the sale window because this is meant to be a special event for Mario's birthday". I'd say neither collection is perfect, and if I was forced to choose between the two I'd have to choose 3D All-Stars just because there's more content there. But overall, I still have a greater appreciation for what All-Stars could pull off at the time versus what 3D All-Stars did in our modern day. All-Stars felt like a celebration of the Mario series up until that point, while 3D All-Stars felt like the bare minimum Nintendo had to do.
Regarding the third point: It's how Nintendo treated anniversary stuffs. Even though I also don't agree with the idea. And it's funny how they end up overprinted the physical copies anyway, so even years later you still can get a copy easily. (Same goes for the new Game & Watch units as well, it's clear those were a niche product and it's not so valuable to people that they're gonna buy it from scalpers)
"Let's make more money by doing less work." That's pretty much what 3D All-Stars is to me in a nutshell. 35 YEARS of your number one game series and a collection that was supposed to outline some of his best 3D outings and this is all you've done?
It's literally the only reason people enjoy 3D ALL STARS... FOMO if the game was still available online they would realize how they were dupped into buying overpriced mediocrity
@@jesusbarrera6916 I think the people who enjoy it do so because they like the games included. Most people aren't take an analytical look at the package as a whole, that doesn't matter to them. They often just want a way to play Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy, and for many people it does just that. Many people enjoy the collection because of the games included, and that's all they really wanted. For me personally, I saw the collection as underwhelming (especially considering the price tag), but I don't think people who enjoyed it were duped, I just think certain things that matter to me or you just don't matter to that individual.
I agree if we're comparing All Stars SNES to All Stars 3D. The SNES title was clearly more ambitious, even if (as you said) I still find the NES games to ultimately be the superior versions. But if we're comparing AS3D to the Wii version of All Stars... oof. No. Sticking a single SNES rom on a disc and charging $30 for it was completely absurd, even with the additional trinkets they included. The ten sound effects on the soundtrack disc likely took up more space than the All Stars rom.
Yep... Because their not good people... I got the last copy from my Walmart about a year or so back, Ironically. Nintendo lied about it being limited... Also... Something no one talks about is that all 3 games are ligit roms of the original games and sold on an emulator cartridge. No joke. If you extract the files... Its ligit an Emulator. Which is funny because Nintendo hates emulation, homebrew, and piracy (which I can understand piracy, I don't agree with piracy either... at least for games still available publicly through the company.) with a passion to the point of sueing anyone they catch... And actually breaking laws to win the cases... At least USA laws from what I can gather of their... interesting history. IDK why they think that they can sue us with their Japanese laws... Homebrew and emulators are legal in the USA... And Nintendo, because it's illegal in Japan, are sueing USA citizens for laws that don't apply to them! Like why...? So in total... Nintendo really really messed up here with the game...
Kirby Dream Collection was a better collection than Super Mario All Stars on Wii. They included six Kirby Games, New Copy Ability Challenges based on Return to Dreamland including the return of the Smash Copy Ability, a Soundtrack with select tracks from the entire franchise, three episodes of the anime, a virtual museum which showed when every Kirby Game released. It also came with a booklet on par if not better than the one that came with Super Mario All Stars.
I personally love the choices made with 3D All-Stars. If I could change a single thing it would be for smooth camera controls and/or widescreen for 64.
They should have a version of 3D all stars with the original all stars + Mario World as the limited edition, and have the normal version of 3D all stars be sold after.
I feel Scott keeps forgetting both Mega Man the Wily Wars and Sonic Jam did the whole compelation thing back in the day too, not to mention Sonic Compilation on the Sega Genesis. Also in the case of Sonic Jam and Mega Man Wily Wars they both had an extra exclusive game hidden within the compilation, Wily Tower and Sonic World both exclusive to their respective compilation.
3D All Stars will always be one of the most special games to me. The hype around it, the excitement of getting it opening weekend, saving up for the My Nintendo goodies, genuinely a special time for me. I personally prefer it over Super Mario All Stars( especially on Wii)
Agreed. Gotta say, despite the lack of extras, the quality of games in 3D-All Stars more than makes up for its shortcomings. It is a compilation of masterpieces
@@jesusramirezromo2037Yeah, i have no clue what people are talking about, there was no hype for this. If anything there was a lot of disappointment because it was the just original versions untouched when people wanted HD remakes, and massive annoyance because it was just for a limited time to create FOMO. And really nothing was done to make Sunshine a better game. They didn't make the game less linear because in the original you are forced to to do the first seven levels in order to just reach Bowser. Nothing was done to make the power ups less annoying to use like allowing Mario to swtich between Fludd machines on the fly. Those damn blue coins, same for the 100 coins sprites where they can only be obtained in specific episodes. Nothing was done to those shitty levels like the pachinko machine and the lilipad river. Sunshine is riddled with massive problems and nothing was done to improve it.
What sucks was me thinking "damn im going to have to buy smg2 separately when they release that. They are so greedy.".......and then they never released it.....wtf
Something I absolutely hated about Mario 3D All-stars that never gets talked about is that they completely removed surround sound from Sunshine and Galaxy. It really dampened the immersion for me. Also, the lack of sounds coming from the Wii remote was a shame, but I understand why they couldn't bring that audio back.
Yeah... Crash And Spyro may not have soundtracks... But they remade the games completely... If ya look at the games remakes to the original, it's vastly different
Surprised Scott forgot to mention that 3D All-Stars has N64 and Gamecube controller support for 64 and Sunshine respectively. It wasn't there at launch but it was really cool to see them add that stuff post launch.
I got the game about a year later or so... It felt odd hearing that... I still ain't got a 64 controller... I have a GameCube one, but no way to hook it to my switch.
Despite having nostalgia for playing All-Stars on Wii as a kid, I think 3D-All Stars is the better collection because at least you were technically getting brand new officially released versions of Mario games, for better or worse, while All-Stars on Wii played exactly like the SNES version
I totally agree with your comments. I never got a WII, But I used to have mario all stars on the old s n e s back in the day. I was actually playing three d all stars on my switch light yesterday l o l
3D All Stars was a part of an incredibly memorable time in my life when I was locked down and unemployed while attending a software dev bootcamp. I played and almost 100% Galaxy and had such a good time doing so. Weird to feel nostalgic about that now since I felt nostalgic about replaying Galaxy at the time.
i found a copy of this used at gamestop like 6 or 7 years ago, and always regretted not picking it up. i loved all stars as a kid. i still see it at gamestop sometimes, but the price is like double now.
It was extraordinarily bad timing that not only the Mario 64 decompilation (and subsequent ports to every device on the planet) but also Render96 came out at the same time. It doesn't help that the AI-upscaled Mario 64 assets and Sunshine cut-scenes were pretty blurry, not to mention that Galaxy's emulation had reduced color counts for performance reasons.
1:54 That's a programming flaw. There's a romhack that fixes the issue, the thing is that some programmerr at Nintendo forgot to adjust the Y position of when you hit a block, making you go upwards instead of bouncing down
What Mario does when he hits a block is exactly the same as in the NES version; the reason it’s different is because in the NES game you would bonk against another invisible block that doesn’t get loaded in the SNES version. There’s a good article about it on cohost by Retro Game Mechanics Explained called “RGME Article #7: Brick Consistency” that goes into detail about it.
Mario 64's visuals on 3D All Stars arent exactly a filter, they instead just ran the textures through an AI upscaler and made it so the emulator patches/swaps in the upscaled textures on the fly
I have a theory that for Mario's 35th anniversary the big game was intended to be Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury but when they heard people wanted a compilation they tried cobbling together something last minute when it wasn't intended to release (at least not at that time)
@timculhane625 You have the right to think so, I like 3D All Stars as well, it's just kinda clear that one got a lot more attention than the other and that's what I'm basing this hypothesis on
I live in New York. I was in Portland when 3D All-Stars was released, so I cancelled my preorder at Target and bought it on Amazon to be shipped to the nearest Amazon locker to my hotel. Best decision of 2020.
And then we need to mention the fact that 3D was a limited release that got removed from the digital store for no actual reason and that they then shoved 64 on NSO and it’s the untouched original rom meaning the version on 3D all stars is inferior
I really don’t understand why Nintendo just doesn’t want to do HD remakes of Nintendo 64 games. A lot of these games really could use the update. It just seems like an obvious thing to do. Games like Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time really deserve to be brought to the modern era properly by being completely remade from the ground up with modern HD visuals, updated controls/ movement, and fully orchestrated soundtracks.
imagine refusing to release a compilation just on the off chance that it will drive sales for the original versions instead (edit: versions that have been available for years)
I'm surprised you didn't mention that 3D all stars was also a limited release, almost certainly because they knew people would pay money for 64 ahead of NSO expansion pass with N64 games getting announced
Would love to see you go over the release edition of Super Mario Maker 1, which had the art book in it. I remember it was one of the first games I ever bought with my own money, and the art book content was great.
Super Mario 3D All-Stars def should've had Super Mario 64 in widescreen and Super Mario Galaxy 2...oh and they should've added Luigi's Mansion as an unlockable bonus too.
I think Galaxy 2 was not included as Yoshi is a full-on motion control-based mechanic. Given that the Spin and Pull Star were remapped to buttons, I recall a bug wherein Yoshi can lock onto multiple things when moving the Wii Remote fast, and pressing B allowed him to eat them all. With this bug, imagine how would Yoshi work without motion controls.
i love the original SNES all stars, it was such a blast playing all the nes mario games on the super nintendo now i can just emulate them :,) how time goes by
At the very least, 3D All-Stars gave us Super Mario Sunshine’s full OST for the first time. It’d never been fully released, only a handful of tunes in compilation albums. The rest, such as the cutscene music, was never officially released.
The Diffrences Mario All Stars for SNES remake the 4 nes mario games and they we're just great but 3d all stars just adds widescreen to Sunshine and a port of Galaxy for SM64 it makes me cry so much
I'm not kidding. When 3D-All-Stars released, I thought back to the Wii All-Stars Collection and was like "man, back then, Nintendo was so much better. Look at this awesome collection!". And then I thought objectively about what was actually in that collection. Then I wondered how I didn't feel scammed back then. Like, the booklet was a step up compared to 3D (despite you could argue that we get some cool booklet-like art in the game-loading screens), but even back then, I was more about the game. And only when 3DAS released, it became clear to me, how low effort the actual game they released actually was xD
The thing with that weird quirk with Mario 1's brick-breaking physics in All-Stars is that that's actually a bug that Nintendo never fixed. What happens there is that they accidentally reversed the direction Mario gets pushed in when he hits the brick, like when he breaks it he's supposed to be sent at x velocity downwards, but instead he gets sent at x velocity but upwards. A bug like this could be as simple as accidentally removing or adding a minus sign in the code, that's how simple it is. There's a fan-made patch for the game that fixes this and it makes the All-Stars version of Mario 1 SO much better, arguably the definitive version of the game at that point (not necessarily for Lost Levels but I'm not gonna get into the details there; basically All-Stars, while it makes Game Overs more lenient in Lost Levels, also makes various other negative changes that harm the game and make it much more frustrating in some parts, mainly 8-3 and the bonus worlds). I highly recommend that if anyone wants to play All-Stars they play with this patch applied, I even applied it to my Wii copy (not the original 25th Anniversary release, the Nintendo Selects rerelease, got it in 2016) though the method to do so is a bit complicated, alongside a few other mods I felt like adding. I wish Nintendo themselves would go back and fix this bug for rereleases of All-Stars, but they never will because they don't want to alter their old games for the sake of preservation. Which makes sense for something like NSO, but the Wii version would have been the perfect opportunity to fix it if they had actually put effort into that release, especially since All-Stars should never have had that bug to begin with back in the 90s. Also this is completely unrelated to the rest of my comment, but to clarify for anyone who keeps saying this, All-Stars on SNES is NOT a collection of remakes, they're not built from the ground up at all: all 4 games are direct ports running nearly the exact same code as the NES versions, just with new sprites, sound, and a save feature added, and a few tweaks made here and there (mostly with Mario 1 and LL, less so with Mario 2 and Mario 3 is nearly untouched). Meaning it's really a collection of remasters, and thus technically the same thing as 3D All-Stars. Hence why many original bugs and even debug modes and unused content from the NES versions are still present in All-Stars, that would not happen if they were remakes. So _technically speaking_ even the original release of All-Stars isn't that different from 3D All-Stars, it just _feels_ a lot more substantial and not remotely as lame. It was still a great collection nonetheless, it doesn't have to be remakes because the NES originals were already great.
I think why Nintendo didn't add the soundtracks for Super Mario 3D All-Stars to a CD is because most people now don't have a sterio/CD player now or have an old dusty one in their basement that they havn't used in years. Also, 3D All-Stars lets you turn off the screen of the Switch when listening to the soundtracks witch is cool because the Switch is a portable device.
I’d say Wii 2D All Stars is the bigger waste given how it was nothing more than a romdump and something that easily coulda been re released on the Wii VC. 3D All Stars at first glance may seem to have less content, but they at least provide the Switch the opportunity to play a GameCube and Wii game when the Switch still doesn’t have a whole ton of GameCube and Wii legacy content or NSO service.
Uh, good sir or mam ... The games are ligit emulated. Their not remakes at all... The whole cartridge is just a limited emulator chip thing that reads the code... And ofc takes what it reads and emulates the controls to the switch... As well as those edits... Ist literally just an emulator that just reads and rewrites the program... IDK exactly how it works... All I know is it's literally an official emulator...
Honestly Mario All Stars (the OG) is a mandela effect for me. I'm 37 so I was there for it before it released and after and while I didn't own an SNES (I went from NES to Genesis to PS1, been with PlayStation since), I had plenty of friends who had one as well as my little brother. So I remember playing a Mario All Stars that was just the NES games in a compilation...no upgraded graphics or anything, just a re-release with the 4 games on it. Like I remember the same exact menu to choose the game...but the upgrades SNES graphics I don't remember AT ALL. But as far as I know, a Mario All Stars with just the NES releases on it...doesn't exist. And I don't know why I misremember it so much.
I used the soundtrack to this day. I ripped all the sound bites for my text tones for my phone. I got so many compliments from it. So it got some use for how limited it was on content.
Honestly, I still prefer playing Galaxy on Wii from now on. Not only because the Wii Remote and Nunchuk feel more comfortable in my hands compared to the Joycons and even the pro controller, but it’s the little things they removed that make the 3DAS version inferior in my eyes, like the removal of Miis in the file select (I know that’s unnecessary in the first place but adding your Mii felt more like it was YOUR file and not some red plumber guy’s file), the gyro in the pointer going out of sync every minute, and the lack of Wii Remote sounds. I know the Joycons don’t have a speaker in them but the removal of these sounds leaves the game with less oomph. Stuff like the whimsical star bit sounds, the clicking in menus, the loud and in your face launch star noise, these alongside many other sounds make the game feel more magical every time I play it, while the lack of these in 3D All-Stars feels a bit too… empty.
You're not wrong about everyone just opening youtube if they want to listen to vgm but.. Nintendo themselves have a recent history of taking down music uploads for their games. If they had their way, the best and most accessible means of listening to the tracks would be 3D All-Stars.
To be fair, when it comes to the announcement to release of Super Mario 3D All-stars i do think that Covid had something to do with it. My Theory is that they wanted to to announce it at E3 (if it wasn't canceled that year) and have the same release date but due to the unpredictability on 2020 in itself, they just waited a bit too long to fully announce it. Again that's just my personal theory, And supposably they had been working on it since February of 2020 since people found a save file for sunshine (i believe) in the game files.
Yeah, everyone just forgets that COVID impacted a lot of the gaming industry for a few years & its no different with Nintendo. On the plus side, they said they'd never do limited releases after this and they have stayed true to their word.
Not gonna lie, I beat galaxy on the wii, haven’t really tried sunshine in 3D All-Stars, and I’ve dipped my toes into 64 through both 3D All-Stars and the DS version. (does that count?) But as barebones as 3D All-Stars is, when my phone was broken like a week or two ago I was wanting to listen to music, when I suddenly had a visceral flashback to the reveal of 3D All-Stars. In the reveal video, a woman is seen using the music player mode on her switch as she tucks it into her handbag, and that’s exactly how I used it it, and despite how nerdy and ridiculous it is, it’s honestly kinda nice to have these tracks available in an official format than having to scour the internet to find the soundtracks cause they’ve been copyright claimed by…oh ya… Nintendo.
I mean Nintendo hasn’t been one to worry about graphics, and sunshine and galaxy look good enough to not need a remake, and then it would be weird for sm64 to be remade but not the others
Many years ago I played SM64 for the first time, and I remember the fun, how complicated it could be sometimes, etc. I don't remember glitches or weird artifacts. Playing SM64 in the compilation feels like that as well, because they polished the details, like the fonts, or the user interface, etc. So when I am playing this version is like I am playing the version I played back then, but when I boot in the NSO the version of the game I actually played then it feels different, because now I can see how that game visually has aged, also I am from Europe so the experience is actually slower, so in my memory I remember it like the 3D All stars version.
I think by the metrics of virtual console, the game is lacking a bit. After all N64 games were usually $10, Wii games were $20 which means GameCube would’ve been about $15. I appreciate the game for bringing down the price of Sunshine in the second hand market. That game alone was at least $50 before. I think just one more big addition would’ve helped. Maybe including 64DS with analog movement or Galaxy 2 would’ve gone a long long way.
@@Djay_B Yeah they are seemingly turning things around now, but that doesn't change all their past lazy ports parading as remasters. Seriously though thank God they are actually trying now.
@@Djay_B Well then it'd be totally worth it. I still wish they had fully remastered Mario 64. I think it's one of the best 3D Mario games and having it fully remastered would have made it a lot more accessible for newcomers.
It’s pretty funny that out of all of Nintendo’s treasured franchises, it’s Kirby that’s had the best wide release compilation.
Kirby Is the best gaming franchise ever so ofc
I'm still waiting for that Kirby Game & Watch...
Thanks Hal for that
Yeah but I'm honestly so surprised they didn't release a new collection game last year for the 30th anniversary

Fun fact: the version of Mario World in All Stars + World has a totally different sprite sheet for Luigi, not just a different head shape. He jumps differently, he slides down slopes on his knees, and he shoots fireballs from his mouth instead of his hands. Luigi canonically spits fire.

The fact the version of all stars with world attach to it is only available to the snes is definitely on the list of Nintendo’s biggest mistakes.
By whose metric?
You can just play Super Mario World by itself
@@aledandrianBut why not just include it if you're going to rerelease Super Mario All-Stars? You can already play the NES games on their own too.

in all seriousness tho, it really is odd that they didn’t include it. sure it adds a game that’s already available on the platform, but that _specific_ version of the game will continue to grow into obscurity.
My theory for why Mario 3D All-Stars is so bare-bones is that Nintendo heard all those rumors about a 3D Mario collection back in 2020, and just quickly threw something together. Probably not the case, but I think it would be funny.
That plus 2020 being...well, 2020, does make me think that their other huge plans had to be severely curtailed.
At most I can see them originally planned to have Galaxy 2, but that's it.
my theory is that it was an emulator test. N64 emulator, GC emulator, Wii games recompiled with the GPU emulated
@@genderenderthat actually makes sense, test out your emulator, get your fanboys into buying overpriced trash, win win!
My theory with the 35th anniversary rumors about a ton of Mario games about to be announced is that the pandemic ruined most of those plans until this year. A new 2D Mario, remakes of the best regarded RPGs, new Princess Peach, Luigi's Mansion port, these would all make sense to announce during said year, along with 3D All-Stars
... There's no way you're wrong.
I think origami king was supposed to be the introduction to the 35th anniversary but the pandemic ruined it so they just made it it's own thing
Nah, they're just cashing in on the momentum of the movie.
It’s on record that the pandemic greatly impacted Nintendo’s plans.

"These ramblers on the carpet." Are my favourite Scott's Stash videos.
Only shame is that the Kirby dream collection was not available in EU only in US and Japan for some odd reason

Some of the tracks in Super Mario sunshine were actually unable to be stripped from the original game bc the sound effects were put over the tracks, but with the music collection we now have the full raw tracks without any sound effects that may have played during when the song was playing in the games
Nothing will ever beat All Stars + World. First game I ever played and still my absolute favorite to this day.
FOMO
if the game was still available online they would realize how they were dupped into buying overpriced mediocrity
You mentioned how you can go to TH-cam to listen to all these soundtracks. While true, Nintendo has tried their hardest to make that not true lol
"An easy way to add value to your package" So Nintendo is behind those emails I keep getting.
The sheer fact that 3D All Stars didn't at least come with a manual never made sense to me
I know right? All we got is a controller menu... That can't even be edited!!!
They just needed to add galaxy 2 to be perfect
It feels…incomplete without it
Genuinely not needed. Barely anyone remembers that game besides people who are actual gamers (as in me)

I personally love the choices made with 3D All-Stars. If I could change a single thing it would be for smooth camera controls and/or widescreen for 64.
They should have a version of 3D all stars with the original all stars + Mario World as the limited edition, and have the normal version of 3D all stars be sold after.
Imagine if they put Mario Paint onto Super Mario All-Stars with all the sound effects and music included in that.
So FOMO...
So you got suckered in by FOMO?
What hype? Noone was ever hyped for this
@@jesusramirezromo2037Yeah, i have no clue what people are talking about, there was no hype for this.
Nintendo's greedy limited release with 3D All Stars was the worst part of it imo
I got it for Mario 64 pretty much and was ticked off when about a year later the N64 and Mario 64 came to Switch Online anyway.
Yep, I still think that’s one of the shittiest things they’ve done this gen along with mario 35 and the first fire emblem also being killed off.
What sucks was me thinking "damn im going to have to buy smg2 separately when they release that. They are so greedy.".......and then they never released it.....wtf
3D all stars sells for about the same price online. There were a lot of copies.
Yeah. I agree. That & the fact Galaxy 2 wasn't added into the collection was also an huge disappointment.
The BS part is that the 3D Allstars is like $200 now because Nintendo said “you can only have it for a few months”
I think I prefer All-Stars, but 3D All-Stars having the soundtracks for each game is nice. I still wish Galaxy 2 was included tho.
Just compare the amount of effort put into 3d all-stars to Crash and Spyro's trilogies. It is night and day.
Yeah... Crash And Spyro may not have soundtracks... But they remade the games completely... If ya look at the games remakes to the original, it's vastly different
Surprised Scott forgot to mention that 3D All-Stars has N64 and Gamecube controller support for 64 and Sunshine respectively. It wasn't there at launch but it was really cool to see them add that stuff post launch.
the fact that they added N64 support WAY after the game was discontinued is still funny

One of my favorite facts about All Stars on Wii is that apparently it’s so small you can take the disc out mid play and it’ll still work
I like this channel because its reminiscent of Classic Game Room and Ashens, the kinds of channels that got me into retro gaming

Weird to feel nostalgic about that now since I felt nostalgic about replaying Galaxy at the time.
i found a copy of this used at gamestop like 6 or 7 years ago, and always regretted not picking it up. i loved all stars as a kid. i still see it at gamestop sometimes, but the price is like double now.

this is literally the first video that I’ve seen that doesn’t have the word first in the first 30 comments
he really underplays how perfect mario maker is for an anniversary title
It was extraordinarily bad timing that not only the Mario 64 decompilation (and subsequent ports to every device on the planet) but also Render96 came out at the same time. It doesn't help that the AI-upscaled Mario 64 assets and Sunshine cut-scenes were pretty blurry, not to mention that Galaxy's emulation had reduced color counts for performance reasons.
11:29 that DMC 5th anniversary collection is wild 😂💀
I have a theory that for Mario's 35th anniversary the big game was intended to be Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury but when they heard people wanted a compilation they tried cobbling together something last minute when it wasn't intended to release (at least not at that time)
You make a good point but both games are very very good in my opinion
@timculhane625 You have the right to think so, I like 3D All Stars as well, it's just kinda clear that one got a lot more attention than the other and that's what I'm basing this hypothesis on
I'll always remember that soundtrack CD. My grandparents had it playing in their CD player in their bedroom when we visited. Good times.
I remember getting a re-release of the Wii version of All-stars when I was little. I blew at some of the games, but now I'm good at them.
imagine refusing to release a compilation just on the off chance that it will drive sales for the original versions instead (edit: versions that have been available for years)
The soundtracks are actually a pretty big deal since before we had to rely on gamerips for some of them and now we have them in high quality
I'm surprised you didn't mention that 3D all stars was also a limited release, almost certainly because they knew people would pay money for 64 ahead of NSO expansion pass with N64 games getting announced
Scott’s stash is a masterclass in maximizing your monetization of content
Would love to see you go over the release edition of Super Mario Maker 1, which had the art book in it. I remember it was one of the first games I ever bought with my own money, and the art book content was great.
$8 for the virtual games on the Wii is crazy. We really got the most of our money and the game, with those prices.
I'm surprised that they didnt include Super Mario world with the wii release of Super Mario All Stars.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars def should've had Super Mario 64 in widescreen and Super Mario Galaxy 2...oh and they should've added Luigi's Mansion as an unlockable bonus too.
3d all stars should also pay my taxes
I think Galaxy 2 was not included as Yoshi is a full-on motion control-based mechanic. Given that the Spin and Pull Star were remapped to buttons, I recall a bug wherein Yoshi can lock onto multiple things when moving the Wii Remote fast, and pressing B allowed him to eat them all. With this bug, imagine how would Yoshi work without motion controls.
3d all stars was so thrown together it made me forget about how even more thrown together wii all stars was
i love the original SNES all stars, it was such a blast playing all the nes mario games on the super nintendo now i can just emulate them :,) how time goes by
At the very least, 3D All-Stars gave us Super Mario Sunshine’s full OST for the first time.
20:55 Nintendo says: "Watch me", and copystrikes every single Mario ost off the face of TH-cam
The “5” anniversaries are a big deal, unless you’re Bomberman. Then for some reason the 33rd is what’s exciting.
All games run of potato PCs, let alone smartphones now
You get an even worse lazy dump out of the 3D collection
Mario galaxy 2 could have been the “Mario lost levels” of 3d all stars
If you ask me, Super Mario 3D All-Stars has the most definitive versions (officially) of 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy.
definitely not.
I have some of those sound effects from Super Mario All Stars Wii CD on my phone. They're great for message notifications.

3D All Stars is a great advertisment for Unofficial emulation
Not really
IIRC, All-Stars on the Wii holds the record for most empty wii disc. The game only takes up 951kb on a 4.7gb disc, about 0.02% of the capacity
Yeah but 1080p and non analog video makes up for any of that superfluous stuff
You're not wrong about everyone just opening youtube if they want to listen to vgm but.. Nintendo themselves have a recent history of taking down music uploads for their games. If they had their way, the best and most accessible means of listening to the tracks would be 3D All-Stars.
My cousin had the version of Super Mario All-Stars with World in it but i remember it having the other cover with magician Mario on it.
Well at least I now know what my uncle was playing during that fever dream of a childhood memory. (The 2D one)
Any idea what happens if ya load said save file?
Yeah, everyone just forgets that COVID impacted a lot of the gaming industry for a few years & its no different with Nintendo. On the plus side, they said they'd never do limited releases after this and they have stayed true to their word.
Battle of the All-Stars
Let's also not forget they already put Galaxy on the Shield so it was pretty much already done for the Switch as well.
