  • I take apart my beloved new Kawasaki Versys 650 so that I can access and replace the spark plugs and stick coils.
    The question is, will it fix that annoying low-rev hesitancy that plagues most of the modern Fuel injected motorbikes? Tune in to find out!!

    Today I did a spark plug and air filter change. Just wanted to say thank you for making this video. It helped me a lot while I was working on the Versys. Unfortunately the right stick coil was cracked and I did not have a new one to replace it with which means I have to do the whole process again when I get the new stick coil. Hopefully it will take me less time next time.

  • @pastorfred3460
    @pastorfred3460 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I'd recommend a smudge of dialectic grease in the end of the coil that goes over the plug. I do the same thing for my boat spark plugs to aid in water proofing. Also, you can use the old coil to remove the spark plug after you have loosened it. I prefer that over a magnet.

      The Versys does have an alarming amount of plastic for something that's supposed to be a 'Dual Sport' bike! That's the one thing choppers have going for them i suppose, you can just reach in and do everything, without even taking your jacket or gloves off!

    Excellent. Well filmed and explained. Simply put. Nice. BTW in case you haven't seen it, Moonfleet41 (Del) has a bit about repairing broken plastic penii (?) using a simple bit of plastic welding on his channel. I wish manufacturers would abandon them as a concept because they are crap but as long as they can get away with charging a bloody fortune for a side panel that is a bit of plastic moulding it costs them pennies to produce (I used to do commercial plastic moulding), they will keep building in weak spots.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Though in this case, the panels stay on fine without the penii so they could have saved more by not bothering at all! Unless that's where the annoying buzzing is coming from?....
      I'm a big fan of Moonfleet41 channel too. Ever since I found the sneaky B&Q Renthal bar end cheat!

    • @RobertLeeDesign
      @RobertLeeDesign 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you think that's bad, look at how much crap you have to do to get at the ECU, throttle bodies, and other stuff on the Diavel. I don't get why manufacturers insist on putting so much extra crap all over our motorcycles so it takes 20+ steps just to do regular maintenance items. My Speed Triple is dead simple by comparison. Remove seat, unbolt and remove tank, unbolt/remove airbox. Now you see everything.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robert Lee I reckon they do it for 3 reasons. 1 that if it's tough for us to get at these parts, they're also protected from weather and damage 2. You'll be more inclined to take your bike to the dealer for servicing and 3. When you do, they can charge you through the arse for the 18hrs of labour that the job will require! !

    hi mate
    thanks so much for this! very clear video
    Just went to replace the spark plugs on my 09 ER6. One of the stick coils was stuck, had to soak in WD and slowly came out. The plastic casing had split and it was full of corrosion...
    I ordered some mitsubishi stick coils apparently they are better than the denso ones that kawi use.
    BTW where did u get that magnetic telescopic bit thingy???
    need to get one!
    thanks

    • @dimitrisblane6368
      @dimitrisblane6368 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cool mate got one of these magnet sticks from ebay!
      Quick question....I got some mitsubishi coils from ebay, the seller says they are compatible with Er6 2006-2015.
      Just received them and even though the primary coils are inside the range in the manual 1.4-1.5 ohm the secondary coils are outside the range. One of them measures 9.4Kohm the other one 9.7Kohm.
      So first of all the two coils have different resistance, and also they are outside the range (Secondary Windings: 10.8 ∼ 16.2 kΩ)..
      Any idea if they will work as a replacement???
      thanks!

    • @christianweller4288
      @christianweller4288 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andy Man Cam Looking forward to the "alfresco" valve check.. followed by a cornucopia of profanity when all 8 shims need to be changed in fading light and worsening weather.
      Fortunately the little blighters don't need to be changed too often so major faffage can often be averted.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christian Weller I'll admit, I'm a little afraid of the task! Luckily I currently have a garage, so hopefully the cursing will be reduced at least slightly!! I am, however, procrastinating to the highest level to avoid it as long as possible! But at 62000km, and not knowing when they were last checked, it really HAS to be done!

    • @christianweller4288
      @christianweller4288 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andy Man Cam I've been through it several times. Good lighting, no hangover, start early, have a friend who can drive you to the Kawasaki dealer for shims (so you don't have to reassemble the bike) get a plastic box with 8 compartments for all shims and buckets, small rubber sucker for bucket removal, Haynes manual at the ready etc. Also first time make a note of size of all the shims then second time they can often be swapped around or you can calculate the size required without removal of the cams. Oh yeah and make sure the Kawasaki dealer has a full set of shims to readily part with. Good luck.

    • @AndyManCam

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      To do the full service took about 2 hours I think. But most of that was taking off the fairings and the tank. I think to do the plugs alone, you should probably only need about an hour the first time, maybe 45 minutes the second! Sorry, no idea on the plugs. Though the ones I used ARE Iridium plugs.

  • @zoomjoo
    @zoomjoo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Anyone else doing this, use your factory tool kit spark plug wrench with the joint. It is perfectly sized for ngk plugs and pulls them out w/o magnets and also is the perfect length to use with the tool kit wrench to torque.

      +Sergio barrios Sorry to say i don't know. Did you maybe not reconnect the air temp sensor on the airbox properly? That's all i can suggest. A sensor somewhere is not properly seated.

      Nope! But I think that Kawasaki specced them for use as they come. In any case, they worked great!

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was just eliminating another potential contributor to the lumpy running. Also the older version is prone to cracked rubber and getting seized into the head. So more preventative thank reparative.

    Hello actually recently my versys 650s 2017 model stick coil got burnt which i noticed after i got a bad burnt smell and engine light on . Also i was experiencing loss of power . I took it to the service centre and they replaced it. I asked them the reason for this malfunction. They could not tell me why. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this issue? And do i need to look into other parts in the versys to ascertain whether this issue was caused by some other faulty stuff in the bike

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m afraid i have no idea. Maybe it was just a dodgy coil. When they perish, water gets in and they Short out. Could lead to electrical burns.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could be, although with a good coil, that shouldn’t cause a problem. It’s only when the rubber degrades that you get short circuits.
