HOW TO: Vac Port MOD on Versys 650

  • Much like an overweight stripper, the Kawasaki Versys 650 has a lumpy and hesitant bottom end. In an attempt to fix this I delve into the innards of the bike with nothing but a box of tools, some rubber pipe and a relaxing garden backdrop to perform the mystical "Vac-Port Mod".
    This is how it went down....

    Just bought my 2011 V a month ago. This video was one of the first I saw when researching the V. Very good info. And then I was hooked on your channel. Probably half way through your chronology now.
    I've now completed the vac mod but won't get to test it for a week or so. The catalyst for tearing into the V, after much testing, is a fuel pump failure. Hopefully end of this week it will arrive.

      +Nait ramde Thanks, it's good to know i might have helped a little! Fuel pump failure is annoying. But yeah, good excuse to get some work done while you're under there! Hope its all purring nicely now.

    Wish I had thought ahead with a fuel absorbing material when changing filter on Fazer. Was drenched (slight exaggeration) with the stuff when I took my tank off. I had of course remembered to turn the fuel off but brilliantly forgot to turn it on for my morning commute to work. Got as far as end of my drive. Much swearing followed.

  • @bloodyhell451
    @bloodyhell451 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Superb job. I don't know about 4 stokes - but I do know about two strokes. And you're right. You need to completly revise the carb set up if you change the intake. And it takes a day. With one carb........

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it could even be more tricky than imagined as the ECU tries to alter the fuelling map to 'compensate' for more air than it's expecting. I'm still new to electrical tomfoolery and would be happier messing with a carb as it happens! It's so funny though how many folks think more air means more power and forget that the power comes in a curve rather than on or off! Though i also tip my hat to you old boy. Never messed with 2 strokes and they seem a bit of a dark art with their integrated valving, expansion chambers and whatnot!

    • @bloodyhell451
      @bloodyhell451 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it stands to reason that more air requires more fuel. Electrical tomfoolery aside...... I'm not going there !

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      vitaly deuterium Exactly! Can't get anywhere without upping both! Plus the fueling on the Versys is known for already being lean at the low end. I'm not going there either!

      Hi! I noticed. How did you fix it?

  • @davidcarpenter8741
    @davidcarpenter8741 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was having the off line stutter as well, new plugs and resetting the subthrottle plates to factory settings took care of it. This cav-port modification is a band aid, these bikes come from the factory way too lean and should be corrected rather then modified. The fuel mileage dropped considerably after resetting the subthrottle plates which makes me think the bike was too lean.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. It's annoying that we have to 'fix' our bikes from new to make them work properly. But I guess the manufacturers have their hands tied with the need to squeeze the horses in but keep the low end emmissions down. Rubbish that your fuel economy got worse to fix yours though. You might want to keep an eye out for the upcoming boosterplug video....

    • @ivey77426

      i had it installed by previous owner, but during initial after-buy checkup my mechanic removed it saying it is really bad idea to mess with a bike like that. Funny thing i am not sure i felt the difference :( Thats bothering me since i read a lot of positive feedback on the internet about it.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is very difficult to say. Like many of these things, it's easy to convince yourself in your head that it has made a difference, when really it's a placebo effect. I did think as I read about the mod that there must be a reason that the bike doesn't come from the factory with this setup. After all, the Kawasaki engineers probably know what they're doing?! :D

    • @AndyManCam

      A few more horses would always be good! But I think my only real want is for better fueling and less lumps down at the bottom end. Seems that at 3000rpm it has 100% torque but at 2995rpm it loses 95% of it!

    • @MathieuTechMoto
      @MathieuTechMoto ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andy, on my 2018 650 LT, i was chasing after the snatchy on/off throttle transition
      To solve the problem i did adjust the TPS (throttle position sensor) a little over the recommended value 1.13v@idle instead of 1.05v
      This results in richer overall fuel mixture , more smoother torque at low rpm and got rid of the snatchy throttle
      Better than booster plug And it's free and adjustable !

    • @AndyManCam
