Depends on what your circle is. Orange was called “the Apple of guitar amps” in the pedalboards of doom group the other day and there was an overwhelmingly positive response.
Orange amplifiers have always been known for their pre-eminence at the heavier end of tonality, but you have certainly demonstrated their versatility. Excellent review (as usual) - Editing Ryan did a good job!
This amp is amazing. It is stupidly loud, incredibly versatile and has amazing feel. It responds better to rolling off the tone and volume on the guitar better than any of my other amps. It has really quenched my jcm800 thirst and has me rethinking how much I “need” a number of my other amps. I know everyone thinks these only can Doom as far as metal goes but this will do so much more. Gain at 1 oclock with the right amount of presence/high/bright and an SD-1 with the gain at 9 o’clock is super tight thrash territory. Kick off the SD-1, roll the volume on the guitar back and go to the neck pickup and you’re approaching jazz clean tones with the same settings. Also if you’re worried about the resonance or bottom end, don’t be. It has a huge amount of thump to the point where I keep forgetting this is an el84 amp and intuitively my subconscious thinks it’s a dual el34 or 6l6 power section.
I have a 1974 OR80 2x12, Rocker 30, Micro Terror, and just got the Tremlord. Tremlord really surprised me. Very different but great (and probably a great surf amp). Very impressed with all my Oranges.
@@pierreblenderbuss9807 I’m rolling with a solid state Crush 20W right now and it does absolutely everything I need and more. Gonna start an Orange collection, but kids take up all my money lol. Sounds like you’ve got a lovely collection yourself!
Fantastic. It may not be an according-to-Hoyle , cork-sniffer's surf amp, but dirty surf, rock, metal, and doom, I think this would be an amazing tool.
Orange amps rule.Mesa boogie too.Rad you were able to surf the Orange man.Sounded sick.Love that your channel is also the Name of an awesome Pully album “60 cycle Hum”.
This might be the amp for you Ryan, these are some of the best tones I've heard on this channel. It could also be I don't know anything about surf past what you've shown us on your channel and I like the sound of a lot of high gain amps 😂. Also that was time well spent on that floorplan. I had a genuine belly laugh reacting to that one 🤣
I always loved the orange/matamp et co. aesthetics and loved those 70s dirt tones but for cleans I always thought they were a little too middy. I bought a Micro Dark a few years back as a small practice amp and I have to say that the EQ curve is very pleasing, there's a slight mid cut compare to the Micro Terror that is almost reminiscent of Fender Cleans. It's a solid state amp with a tube preamp ( which I have switch from the higher gain 12ax7 to an at7 to very interesting results ). I'm not sure I would get the bigger Dark Terror but for a small luggable pedal platform amp I'm very pleased with the Micro Dark. Okay, Enough rambling. You made the amp work for your needs, that's all you can ask for.
This ! the OR15 is one of the best lunch box amps I’ve ever played. It’s got 4 el84 power tubes I was hoping maybe a couple of el34s like the 20 watt Marshall’s but the OR15 didn’t seem boxy like other el84 amps so they no doubt know what they are doing.
@@brandonjackson5865the OR15 is not a lunchbox amp, it‘s smaller than most amps, but it it has a wooden chassis, also it has 2 not 4 El84 (no 15w amp does). Maybe you‘ve been thinking about the the Rocker 15? That one is a lunchbox amp. OR15 is great though, been playing it since 5 years now.
Rules are for gatekeepers. I play surf on a Les Paul and PRS through a Roland JC40. If it sounds good then it is good . I’ve also played surf through a little Orange CR35DLX
Having an orange full stack is like my dream rig, and that head sounds soo good.. I'm probably gonna have to settle for a combo but man if I had the money and a garage id be in heaven 😭 awesome stuff as always Mr Hum
Check out the OR15, just got it, currently only have it with a Friedman 1x12 cab but it sounds fucking phenomenal, if I need larger sound I will add an orange ppc112, but as of right now I am fucking in love with the or15 tone

Killer video. I think you may have just sold me on this amp. That surf doom in the beginning was absolutely wicked! 🏄☁️🛸☁️🏄 Surf tones through an orange amp. I would definitely be interested to hear your take on the tremLord 30. It's their take on a 50s style amp with a single channel, lots of headroom, and built-in/valve driven reverb and tremolo. Not to mention you can switch between different speeds with the foot switch, as well as being able to engage and disengage the tremolo and reverb through a Foot switch as well. 30 W scalable down to 15 in headroom mode, two W scalable down to one in bedroom mode. Absolutely beautiful cleans until you crank that volume all the way up, then you get some nice gritty, vintage British crunch. A really cool blend of aesthetics
First time I heard a Thunderverb 200, Fatdog was playing it clean, and it was really a nice surprise. I guess that I have a couple clean 200 Watt things around here, turns out that some things are easier than you think. 😸
You can do anything on an orange. It just sounds much more good. The little 12w practice amp has a Joe Pass like setting that just makes my mediocre notes sound so good.
Man Ry dog you had me going here -- Then I goggled it, 1800 bux, bout spit up my drink Their heiroglyphics alone almost make it worth the price of admission though I agree!!!
Very cool. I just watched cs guitars video on the exact same amp. The amp rocks. You should try doing some surf metal. surfy tones with metal distortion.
Hey Ryan. Why don't you run the reverb in the loop? If you play a fender amp with reverb, the reverb circuit is after the preamp, just like in a loop. To me it makes WAY more sense to get an authentic surf sound by running reverb in the loop. Just curious.
3 out of the 4 amps I own are orange amps (all combs). I love them, but then again, I don't play very loudly and run them clean for the most part. I play post-punk/shoegaze, and they do the trick for me.
@34:34 I always love how octave fuzz always makes him into a little cartoon chipmunk faced guy. (ever noticed how cartoons do the 2 little front teeth but real life chipmunks hardly ever do that?)

That’s exactly how most bright switches work- they are essentially a treble bleed that even with the volume (gain) low, it still passes the highs at full gain/volume. Once the knob gets above halfway up, the effect of the bright cap will essentially diminish and at full up, it’s completely out of the circuit
How did you get Orange to send u an amp? Did you ask em or...? The fuzz and Heavy Metal pedal sucked reallybad! Amp is 100% for either doom or cleans nothing in between. Loved it. Thanks.
Most amps had built in spring tanks and no effect loop. Barring that, you would have to run an outboard spring tank like the one Fender made into the front of an amp.
Amazing amp, I want one! Not so happy with the sound of the pedals you're demonstrating tho. The surf bit is amazing, but all of the pedal fun past that seems to be negatively impacting the sound of the amp. Seems like this amp wants to be used puristically.

That OR30 is such a heavy amp that Andreas Kisser from Sepultura ditched the Mesa Rectifier for 2 of those and he said that he'll never coming back.
I play Surf-A-Billy thru my Orange Super Crush 100 solid state. The reverb is phenom!
The clean channel is crisp and reacts to pedals like a tube amp.
