    More info - orangeamps.com/or30/
    The Orange OR30 is a LOT of amp, despite it only being single channel. Huge transformers give it the low end thump and headroom of a more powerful amplifier - putting this into the territory of seriously heavy music.

    First off: Killer SIlmarillion reference Second: Tube amps made my life so much better and easier. I was all digital, programming a million patches and it cannot touch the diversity you can get from one channel of a killer tube amp. I can put it on the lead channel of my amp and dial back for beautiful cleans, crunchy mids and dig in and turn up for that searing lead. Nuts what a good amp is capable of. Orange isn't talked about enough these days. Nice video :) Also: Using a great clean platform with a pedalboard can get tones that are just astounding. love my digital stuff but jeez is it a classic combo for a reason.

      I find this super interesting -- I went over to a modeller just about a decade ago, and haven't looked back. At the time, I had enough money to get one of a half dozen amps I wanted, OR a modeller. But now, going from a bedroom musician playing Metallica to annoy my parents and neighbors to a gigging musician playing in wildly inconsistent venues, I love it for an entirely different reason: safety and portability. My $5k usd rackmount rig goes at the backline, safely far away from spilling drinks, tripping bassists, and flying beers. XLR out to FoH and a 2x12 cab for backup. Only thing in danger of getting mangled up by my feet is a $40 blower fan, a $60 tuner pedal, and a $110 midi footswitch, rather than what I am sure would be nearly $1,500 or so in effects.
      The philosophies building the rigs are totally different, the rigs are totally different, but the result is the same: a great sounding set up. And I love it.

      Amp modelers aren't my thing either. I'm looking at the Orange Super Crush 100 seriously. It's solid state, gig-able and sounds amazing, just like a tube amp. Plus the price is reasonable. I'll be able to assemble a $600 US half stack when I finally get my hands on one. My cab was used and only cost $100 some for a Fender Mexican made 4x12. A simple and great sounding half stack with no tubes nor ridiculous presets. Two channels, a few pedals and a good guitar are all we really need.

      @@hotrodjones74 Honestly, the OR series is vastly superior to the Super crush, at least in my personal opinion. They're not bad by any means, but those power tubes and transformer is a big part of where the magic is at. The OR15 isn't much more expensive that the crush, but plenty loud and capable enough. (Do you really need 100W?) If you have the extra cash, the 30 is worth every penny.

    I don't know about everyone else, but I've had it with button-pushing, and knob-twisting. Technology has produced some exceptional things. But, the irony is that it's come at the expense of the music itself. ANY amp that sound great, and is one channel, with as few knobs as possible, the better. Same with guitars. Two pickups, a toggle, and a volume knob covers 99% of the tones that made most of us guitar players, fans of the instrument in the first place. The Friedman Little Sister was a lot like that. Set the EQ, and then just twist the gain, and/or your guitar's volume knob for a clean channel (assuming the amp cleans up well). That's an unnecessarily long way of saying I love where Orange has gone with this amp. This was a killer demo, as well. Playing all the right riffs. Very well done.

      I guess it all has its place, but for me it’s a jcm800 style amp a few pedals and something with a set of humbuckers. I tinker with all kinds of stuff as it’s kinda part of my job, but when I’m recording or playing less is more. 😊

    Just got my OR30 in black tolex today. All I can say is WOW. this thing is the real deal. I have a few 5150s including an OG, have had a few PRS, have a Marshall getting fixed, and have had a few others too. This thing may truly be the best amp I’ve ever played or owned. The cleans are fantastic, it’s incredibly versatile, more dynamic than any other amp I’ve owned. EQ dials at noon, bright to the left, presence at 2, gain at 1-2 o’clock with an SD-1 is just unbelievable for both rhythm and lead. Colin is right, if you’re in the market for a legit plexi or JCM800 you need to check this thing out.

    Great vid. Recently, I've found myself drifting back to the simpler format of a single-channel amp too. Like you say: it can't do on-the-fly switching at a gig, but there's something intuitive and just plain fun about it, which helps when recording rather than complicating things. If it's voiced well - which this amp seems to be - it just...works. I got a Matamp Series 3000 recently, and after taking the time to get used to its controls, I don't think I'll need to buy another amp again (apart from, perhaps, an OR30...)

    Great content. I wish many of these videos would go through basic mixing to balance the dialogue and the music clips to the same level. I know I'm not the only one that has to turn it up during dialogue to hear what is being said, and then quickly turn it down during the music so neighbors do not bang on the wall. Come on guys you are better than that.

    The amp sounds really good, very articulate. I thought the addition of a presence know and a bright switch was a really great move. I love my Rockerverb MKii, and while I love the thick, heavy, saturated tones, I do wish it had a presence control just for the ease of adding some high mids when I want them. It's not an issue as throwing the Guptech Pdeq pedal (which simulates a presence and depth control) in the loop does the trick, but the ease of having it on the amp would be nice.

    Marshall killer! Beautiful clean sounds (as long as you do not excpect mid-scooped Fender cleans), iconic, Orange typical classic overdrive sounds and even very covincing, unique high-gain to Metal sounds. And this all from a single channel! What more can you expect?
    Not very cheap, but for me one of the best sounding and most flexible new amps, which I have heard during the last years.
    For me the best sounding Orange since the release of the Rockerverb.
    The additional bright switch and Presence control are really an improvement, add a lot more flexibility and some more Plexi-like bite, if wished and also the power reduction is an advantage, while the amp itself still sounds, like an Orange should.
    Amp of the year for me!

I was wondering if maybe at some point you might consider making a video on potentiometers... how different values effect your tone, what impact different taper types have on how they work, what effect combining different values would have (for example 1M volume & 250K tone vs 250k volume & 1M tone), etc... I think it could be really useful to people!

    This is the reason i will always go for analog when i have the chance. Digital only has what you program into it. It rarely gives you unintended useful outcomes. When you have an analogue machine, you can get to learn its ins and outs, all of the intended and unintended artifacts that digital and modellers can only reproduce if they have been expressly inserted. Once you know what you want then sure, go digital, but i always choose my gear for the journey

    • @pyroman6000
      @pyroman6000 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I actually did the opposite- got a modeller, because I had no idea what sort of sound I wanted- or what gear to get that MADE those sounds. Then zeroed in on what models I used the most. The intention was always to get a simple tube amp- I just didn't know which one!

      @@chidorirasenganz i ended up gravitating towards Fendery amps. Particularly tweedy, brownfacey types. The Blues Deluxe and Super Somic 60 were right up my alley- but WAY too much amp for this home player, lol. So was Peavey's classic 30 /Delta Blues.
      Then they came out with the Bassbreakers. I Got the 15 watt one. The lo/med/high gain switch and master volume allow me to get the sound i want- and not blow the walls down. It IS a rather loud 15 watts, and heavy as a boat anchor, but damn it sounds good!!! I put all my dirt pedals away- no need- the amp gets me what i want on its own. A darn versatile combo! And if i want to try different speaker or cab combos, it has an extra speaker out that can do 4, 8 or 16 ohms. I' d love to hear it through a vintage voiced 10 or two.

    I have both- a digital modelling amp with all the bells and whistles (Mustang III) and a plain ol single channel tube amp without all the extras (Bassbreaker 15). I find I spend more time actually PLAYING with the latter. And more time faffing about with all the nifty neatos on the former.
    You can get all the sounds you want out of the BB15 just by adjusting the few controls, and using the pots on your guitar. One shiny it does have, is an additional speaker jack with a switchable impedance control. So a speaker swap is as easy as pluggin in another cabinet.
    Both sound great, it's just that one is plug n play, the other is programmable, and takes some setting up to get it to sound just so. (BUT you don't NEED to also haul around a pedal board- all the effects are built in, so there's that real convenience factor. plus, it's WAY lighter!)
    Anyhow, this amp sounds pretty darn good to my ears!

    Soo goood ... damn. 'tis heavy indeed. One item that most of the first reviews skip is that Bedroom 2W mode, or even that the powersupply is technically universal, though you do need to switch fuses of the correct value if going between 110 - 230. That's pretty epic and "road worthy", or said in a different manner: shop it where you score the best value. If my houseful of Traynors amps, smattering of Fenders, Yamaha, Roland and Marshall gets culled, this could be the "one classic tube amp here". Who am I kidding ? This would just be "one more", joining the excellent SC100.

    "When Connected to a decent cabinet" is a massively subjective catch all! 99% of people swear by Vintage 30s. I like K100s. Some people like high gain modern sounding heads... I like Laney's and Marshalls with a Russian Muff or a Rat pedal driving it. Orange preamps tend to be more accommodating to the frequencies I create with an Acapulco Gold or a horrible fuzz.
    I'm keen to try the OR30 so this was a good look at it, though It sounds a bit scooped in places. Definately worth playing with in a studio. You tried a Super Crush?

    10:20 What an about face in the guitar world. It used to be the tube amp was for the stage and the digital stuff was for messing around at home and demoing. Glad I spent my gigging years in the former way of doing things.

    Sounds like Orange DNA with the ability to dial in a bit of the Marshall top end bite. My singular (albeit small) complaint with my Rockerverb MKIII has been a bit of the lack of upper mid bite. Ordered and on its way!

      Rockerverb was good, but just not what I was looking for at all.
      OR30 is MUCH more my speed, I'm considering swapping my AD30 for it.

      @CSGuitars I hear ya, I was always a Marshall guy until prices got waaaay too high and my 800s failed twice live. Rockerverb is KILLER but a but modern/fuzzy for what I play (i.e. your Green Day snippets or Bad Religion style punk rock). Top shelf content, as always my dude!

    My two amps are single channel monsters - Orange Dark Terror and a Randall RD1C. Versatile if I need them to be, but mostly it’s the simplicity of turning on and getting good sound without messing about.

  • @TheAxe4Ever
    @TheAxe4Ever ปีที่แล้ว

    How versatile is a single channel amp? Kind of a loaded question because it all depends on the design quality and dynamic quality of the circuit. I have a Ceriatone Chupacabra 100 head running through an EVH 4x12 cab. With that setup, you would think “big, thick overdrive monster”. And you wouldn’t be wrong. But, you roll down the guitar volume and it cleans up really well. Not like an old Fender clean. But what I call a “Texas clean”. And the pickup selector switch with different pickup combinations really changes and gives you different tones that pop out. So, depending on the quality of the circuit, sometimes a single channel is all you need.

    I’ve moved from a Spark to a 20 year old Matamp R28 combo. Whilst the Spark is a great piece of technology it gave me a bad case of “option paralysis”, andi never really bonded with it. To be fair that probably says more about me than it does the Spark, but that’s just the way I roll. With Matamp I can adjust the EQ, gain, reverb and volume so I spend more time playing and less messing around with controls/app. The Spark is great, just not for me.

    Try and get hold of an H|H IC100S for a review. It's an oldie, but mine is still going strong. Phil Campbell (Motorhead) asked me how I got my sound when gigging in Cardiff back in the day.

    Simple layout. Easy to dial. Extra knobs and switches are confusing to me. That’s why I like my OR15. I don’t need the volume, but the OR30 would be cool.

    Thoughts on this vs the AD30? Love my AD but I'm getting tempted to sell for for this!

    • @K707OR30
      @K707OR30 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have both. They’re totally different amps to me. I love both but the AD30 is really more of a quintessential rock amp. You can make it metal with an overdrive and cranking the gain then adjusting the master to taste, but it doesn’t have a ton of low end. And if you dial in the low end with a pedal it doesn’t tighten up quite as good as the OR30. Not bad at all, just a little looser. The OR30 on the other hand has an obscene amount of low end for being a 30w amp but it’s never flubby or out of control. It just has the kind of low end you’d expect from an el34 or 6L6 50w or even 100w amps which is kind of nuts. The output transformer is legitimately bigger and heavier than a lot of 100w amps I’ve played. Overall I think I prefer the OR30 more because it gets such a great thick, tight, aggressive metal tone with an SD-1, and that’s really my wheelhouse. But I also like the AD30 - it gets really loud in its own right, cleans up great, has two channel flexibility and really nails that more 60s, really overdriven, mid-forward, not-quite-metal plexi type vibe.

    How does the EVH iconic compare to this? Does it do cleans, low and midgain stuff as well? We all know it does high gain very well, many bands are using it live and sound badass! Especially the price, 750 vs 2k for the OR30 is a big difference.

    • @ScienceofLoud
      @ScienceofLoud  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a bit of an apples and oranges comparison - appropriately enough.
      5150 is a completely different sound and gain structure, I'd not be happy with one if I were really looking for the other.
      For my studio I'd want one of each for the coverage that gives me. Something like the OR30 or a Plexi, a 5150. and a Fender style clean amp would cover a LOT of ground.
