Haha, I opened this video and somehow misread the runtime as being 30 minutes and though "ah well, that sounds about right". Your comment only made me realize that it's actually 4 hours.... wow!
He could’ve done it ALL within 30 minutes. He talks about his music, his links, himself in general just way too much. If he said “okay this is called this, here goes” BOOM. That could save an hour alone. Then, when he plays… it’s way too long. We understand after 10 seconds honestly. That would save another hour and if he just removed all banter, it would remove even more. So, yeah it’s cool he’s trying to help… But, it’s wayyyy too long for people who want to learn quick so they can meditate. Not sit here zoning out to him playing. I can’t remember anything he said. Only the guitar I had to quit after 20 min.

I’ve been playing for over 30 years, and a lot of this was very basic to me. But I just let it play in the background for hours while doing other things, and paid attention when something struck me as interesting. I have to say that I learned a lot, even though I didn’t expect to. For a beginner or intermediate player, this would be a wealth of free information. Well done.
@@adrian5b It's certainly not the quantity of hours/time put into learning something, but rather the.... you know the rest; in addition, it's how your mind is wired to work with any given tool (guitar in this case). I can't imagine how advanced humanity would be if we were all experts at all of our 'tools'....now i just sound like a tool --no pun intended.

Typically not a fan of effects (very AC/DC inspired, less is more type mentality), but I bought a physical Vol pedal to plug into my e-rig specifically because you made this style so appealing and broke it down into digestible chunks of solid music/chord theory.

Thank you. I played guitar a little when I was younger. Now 66, I thought I would try it again. This time I bought quality gear. Fender American Ultra. That does make a difference. Your videos are instructional. Not someone getting on TH-cam and showing off what they can do.
I'm taking this course slowly, I want to digest and nurture myself with it. It's the motivation that I needed to move from just practicing technique, rhythm, arpeggios, scales, different chord voicings and songs to go and create something, and the deeper into I get, the broader I see the possibilities, so I'm going to embrace what I find following your guide and whatever happens will have happened. Gonna submerge in lesson two and see what can I do with it in a few hours. I'll keep posted

Those tones are amazing. They are mysterious, haunting, almost errie at times. They sound a bit sad and melancholic. Maybe that's just my interpretation. The tones are beautiful but kind of sad. I'm 63 and I only started playing 10 months ago. The only thing I own is a crybaby wah pedal (which I got for free). My amp is a Marshall 215 JMV 50 watt all tube amp. There's a distortion and a clean channel. I don't know how this worked out but I don't know a single chord. But I can play all five Pentatonic and all seven Diatonic scales up and down the fretboard, backwards and forwards, from top to bottom. I try to expand and contract the scale so they don't sound like scales. I like the idea of using intervals. I'm going to have to buy a compressor or an echo box. I do go to Open Mic once a week and as soon as I can figure out the key and the root note I just scale in the background the whole time. If someone is singing I tone it back but if there's an opening I go for it. I'm having the time of my life.
Wanted to send out a word of thanks. I recently jumped back into a band after 25 years and found that two guitars playing modern music could clutter very quickly. During those times I started using swells and found that to work well. After watching the video and modifying my rack I found that I could get a convincing keyboard/synthesizer sound. Last practice we were due to rehearse a tune from the 80's with a syrupy keyboard intro and dripping monophonic lines throughout. The concepts in the video were very helpful as the keyboard player was unable to make rehearsal that night yet we were able to work on the song as I did the keyboard parts thus allowing the second guitar to occupy the normal rhythm space. I was messing around with the intro of Josie by Steely Dan while tweaking the pedals and starting making ambient beauty. I have a univibe, chorus, and phaser in between my two delay/echo boxes and found that one could emulate the string section of an orchestra, or the church organ. As an aside, learning to tweak the delay pedals against each other helped me put a correctness to my reverb setting which helped when playing straight-up rock lead guitar. I also shared some of the settings with the second guitarist and it does help fill-in the space. Meanwhile I grew up playing Hard Rock and shred. Thank you for this video, it summed-up something that I had actually learned to do already yet was unaware and just needed this wonderful video as a primer to the organized approach that is contained within. Time well spent.
Dude this is amazing! I also love the fact that you're using jazz-fusion guitars to play ambient, they sound amazing! I'm usually used to people using Strats or Teles, but those Allan Holdsworth Carvins sound super good.

Ambient guitar is a lot more effects than guitar , so the guitar is secondary if you get lost just wait for all the effects to tail off again so you can actually hear what little you are actually playing !

Delays and modulation in the effects loop lets you incorporate the amp overdrive and if you add the looper into the effects loop, you only record the overdrive and effects that you select at the time of playing so it works a treat.

In 1984 when I was 16 years old I saw King Crimson on the three of a perfect pair tour at the man music center I was about 10 rows from the stage it was pretty intense for a 16-year-old I eventually became professional musician And taught some well known music ya playing reminds me a little bit of Pierre Bensusan in the clip

Thanks ,this beginning of your lessons I'm running my Samsung Galaxy J7 thru the G1Xon Zoom multi effect guitar processor into a practice amp for starters .You remind me of 1984-85 two guitar players enjoyed pedal point such inspirational reminder today.1 young guitar player would use his volume knob with the palm of his playing hand with a digital double chorus .( don't mean to be to tech wise here,)THANKS for these free lessons . Sightless playing is a must. I've found I'm a lot more relaxed when I don't look. When you're focused on your hands, you're concerned about making the wrong moves or picking the wrong string. And it's really easier than you think.

Hi Max, I’ve seen a few other comments about the unreliability of these swab-type lead testing kits, and I have to add my $0.02 worth. I tried the (apparently, based on the labels) exact same swab kit from Amazon, and it gave positive results on all kinds of items that were definitely lead-free. Stainless steel, plastic, unfinished wood… either my whole apartment has some kind of random superficial lead contamination, or these swabs are absolute garbage. PLEASE do a follow up to let people know that buying some swabs from Amazon for ~$12 and getting positive results is NOT proof that your guitars are killing you! Meanwhile, keep on rocking…
Im getting all these ambient sounds from my Boss SY 300. Lotta fun, and appreciate this channel.Also, the style is haunting, reminiscent of Brokeback Mountain Soundtrack.
A E-Bow is useful for spacey music and you might as well get a bottle neck slide. I think a proper mix of ambient music with rock beats will make it easier if you want to perform to a audience. Don't forget the pedal steel guitar soaked in reverb with volume swells is used in old country music. Russian Orthodox Church choir and ancient Catholic choir music in Latin is also very spacy and don't forget Mongolian throat singing. Ambient music has been around since the first person played a wood flute or sang in a cave. Ambiance can make almost any style of music better. I should utilize the tap tempo function on my delay pedals more often. That function is there for a reason. This video could put a beginner or intermediate player years ahead in the game.

As an aside, learning to tweak the delay pedals against each other helped me put a correctness to my reverb setting which helped when playing straight-up rock lead guitar. I also shared some of the settings with the second guitarist and it does help fill-in the space.
Meanwhile I grew up playing Hard Rock and shred.

Dude this is amazing! I also love the fact that you're using jazz-fusion guitars to play ambient, they sound amazing! I'm usually used to people using Strats or Teles, but those Allan Holdsworth Carvins sound super good.

Awesome video. Ambient guitar playing is just packed full of emotion. It's so easy to get lost in.
Ambient guitar is a lot more effects than guitar , so the guitar is secondary if you get lost just wait for all the effects to tail off again so you can actually hear what little you are actually playing !

Delays and modulation in the effects loop lets you incorporate the amp overdrive and if you add the looper into the effects loop, you only record the overdrive and effects that you select at the time of playing so it works a treat.

In 1984 when I was 16 years old I saw King Crimson on the three of a perfect pair tour at the man music center I was about 10 rows from the stage it was pretty intense for a 16-year-old I eventually became professional musician And taught some well known music ya playing reminds me a little bit of Pierre Bensusan in the clip

Hello Bill, i have just retired and was looking for something to do to use up some of my ample spare time, i decided to teach myself guitar and came across your channel and have been really inspired, the one question i have is what to do with my music once i have learned a little, it's not likely i will be in a band at my age and all i can think is it will be for my own amusement.....i am going to follow your lessons and see where it goes, time to dig out my old guitar from the closet after many years.....awesome lesson here Bill, thankyou.

Sightless playing is a must. I've found I'm a lot more relaxed when I don't look. When you're focused on your hands, you're concerned about making the wrong moves or picking the wrong string. And it's really easier than you think.

I have been watching you now for over a year and I'm a multi instrumentalist but mainly a drummer so my guitar playing is fair at best I love the music that you make, so getting a chance to try some of these techniques is pretty exciting for me, so I just wanted to say thank you.

Hi Max, I’ve seen a few other comments about the unreliability of these swab-type lead testing kits, and I have to add my $0.02 worth. I tried the (apparently, based on the labels) exact same swab kit from Amazon, and it gave positive results on all kinds of items that were definitely lead-free. Stainless steel, plastic, unfinished wood… either my whole apartment has some kind of random superficial lead contamination, or these swabs are absolute garbage. PLEASE do a follow up to let people know that buying some swabs from Amazon for ~$12 and getting positive results is NOT proof that your guitars are killing you! Meanwhile, keep on rocking…

A E-Bow is useful for spacey music and you might as well get a bottle neck slide. I think a proper mix of ambient music with rock beats will make it easier if you want to perform to a audience. Don't forget the pedal steel guitar soaked in reverb with volume swells is used in old country music. Russian Orthodox Church choir and ancient Catholic choir music in Latin is also very spacy and don't forget Mongolian throat singing.
Ambient music has been around since the first person played a wood flute or sang in a cave. Ambiance can make almost any style of music better.
I should utilize the tap tempo function on my delay pedals more often. That function is there for a reason. This video could put a beginner or intermediate player years ahead in the game.
