  • In the latest installment of the Truetone Lounge, Redd Volkaert shares with us his journey from the bars of Vancouver, Canada, to the stages with Merle Haggard, to his Grammy win for his work with Brad Paisley, to his current status as one of the great Honky-Tonk guitar heroes. Along the way, Volkaert heaps praise on bandleader extraordinaire, Don Kelley, for his powerful influence, and the thrill of filling Roy Nichol’s shoes in Merle Haggard’s band. In the gear department, we discuss what he looks for in a Tele, and his working relationships with both Grammatico amps, and Durham Electronics effects.

Just the absolute sweetest human on this Earth! They say don’t meet your heroes, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth when it comes to Redd Volkaert. I can’t even put into WORDS how much we miss him here in Austin. Just the best!

I was lucky to catch him in Austin summer of 2019. I saw Garrett Lebeau, and Red Young at the elephant room. I hear things have changed with the music scene there since covid.. Would you say it's so? I always wanted to come back but would be curious to hear what it's like from a local's perspective...

I was walking down Broadway in Nashville and heard somebody burning on a Tele! I went in and saw Redd leaned back in a chair tearing it up! I sat right in front of him and watched the remainder of the set with his trio. When he took a break he sat with us and talked through the break... good times!

I saw Redd perform along with Bill Kirchen a month ago on Saint Patrick’s day and it was one of the most fantastic shows I’ve ever seen! Got to chat with both of them for a second and they couldn’t of been kinder and more sincere. Their playing is very inspiring, and the comical banter between the two was hilarious.

Redd was yet another guy who absorbed everything like a sponge and eventually developed his own signature sound and style. He was also a guy that was in the right place at the right time. Again, lots of good tone tips and stories. I'll bet life on the road with the one and only Merle Haggard was a real trip. Redd has been a part of some very timeless music. Thank you again Zac for a gem of an interview.

Lucky enough to have Red do a couple of shows with my back in Nashville before he left with Merle. I kept messing up the words and missing cues because I couldn’t stop watching him pick. I must have spent a 1000 hours watching Red pick in Austin of the years. Such a class act and absolute savage.

Saw Redd at Vancouver Island Musicfest in 2018. He and Bill were playing on a tiny stage in the woods. Had never heard of them before, but decided to check out their set. Man! Just the most amazing playing and Redd had us all in stitches. So self-effacing and just full o’ beans. The highlight of the weekend!

I've lived and played in and around Austin since '87 and I can tell you that Redd very quickly became an institution upon arrival. Back in 2010 I was fortunate enough to have Redd sit in all night with my band at The 290 West Club for the annual Christmas Party of The Austin Steel Guitar Cooperative. Envision this: 2 dozen Pedal Steels around the dance floor, and on stage an Archtop Player, a Drummer and myself on Bass with Redd who traded solos 'round robin with the steel guitars all evening long. I was there and it seems surreal. Incidentally, he's genuinely a really nice guy. I said it that night and I'll say it again; he's like Danny Gatton with his foot deep in Bob Wills ass.

Hey Zak..great interview. I was fortunate enough to discover Red in a honky tonk on lower Broadway, Nashville after a radio remote I was working with Tracy Lawrence as his publicist. I was blown away by this nobody who was killing it with this telecaster. Nashville honky tonks in those days were full of hidden gems. I sat with him for the rest of the night and offered to pitch a Guitar Player magazine interview. I took a few lessons from him..he taught me cascading runs. At that time he said he dreamed of playing with Merle. He is definitely on my list of Tele-slingers along with Danny, Roy, and Brent.
Fyi, Doug Livingston is mentioned..Doug played with my brother-in-law in Dan Fogelberg's band and his group Foolsgold...he is a true steel guitar genius. The only person I know who plays jazz on steel guitar. Truly amazing.

I saw Redd Ginny's little Longhorn on Chicken Shit bingo Sunday a decade ago. I was surprised by how good of a singer he is!!! To anyone from the lower mainland I think Redd said he was from Cloverdale. And yes Redd is correct us Canadians are cheap, we're working on it though!

I of course had no idea who he was etc. etc. needless to say I was blown away by the whole experience. Still it always struck me strange to see such a huge talent was playing in such a terrible place! Didn’t matter at all to him as he demonstrated some guitar playing extraordinary that evening. My goodness, Redd is amazing with thing's I wouldn't have thought of that bandleaders value in players! Emmy Lou Harris and the Hot Band made me perk up and listen more to Country Music, especially the solo that Albert Lee took on Luxury Liner. I realized that I liked "Sweet Dreams " and Roy Buchanan's version of "Hey Good Looking!" Love Hank Sr.

I enjoyed this interview the most so far! I have a set of kohler copper saddles back in texas (currently in california). This makes me want to try them out on my jerry donahue, hopefully my dad could ship them out! Thanks for the awesome interview zac! Very inspiring!

That was crazy good. You’d have to watch the little licks he tosses around 100 times to crack the code. I detected Mickey Baker Book 1 at the closing chord of the whole show. During Faded Love. 🎸🎶

Asbury Park N.J. 1974, When Uncle Nick liked a band he told them they were lousy. Never tell'em they're good he told me off the side later; then they start slackin' off. We played there for 5 weeks that spring.Godchildren from Calgary.
