I've literally had to hide in the comments for majority if the video. uncanny valley has to be the scariest kinda horror out there, very addictive tho...
After watching this several times it took me a while to figure out that the guy that was calling the police in Maple County was the guy that was playing dead alternate. He tried to lure the police to his house to kill him.
Alternates have done things like that canonically. To the point where police are trained to not respond to calls involving alternates. Nothing is worth the risk, after all.
that would make a lot of sense, considering that they've lured their victims over the phone before. for example, that's what cesar's alternate did to mark
the scary thing about games like this, is that they tap into the uncanny valley effect. which is not just something that some people have, it's an instinctual thing. It causes anxiety and fear because we a humans, fear what we dont know. Uncanny valley is where something can look human but slightly off. It scares us because were unable to identify if it's entirely a threat or not
What's peculiar about the "Uncanny Valley" effect, is that it suggests that somewhere in the evolution of humans, we evolved to be disturbed and/or scared of... something.
Very true, In addition, unpredictable and chaotic noises, specially the scream of women and children are naturally carved into our brains as a sign of threat. Mixing this with realistic footage instead of cartoon-ish or at least some what unrealistic graphics that others usually use, and the distortion of normal stuff like sounds and faces, giving them more unnatural properties, results the worst possible for our beains
Apparently thats why some people are scared of clowns and why so many things that are “spooky” (think slenderman) have humanoid features but usually too long and gangly to be normal. It was cool to see someone bring it up here!
When I first seen this I was only 3 minutes into the video and I was like it’s not that scary. Ended the video and I understand why you would be scared
Only the first part was a game, the part after he searched the title was a video which is part of a group of other videos that are in the Mandela Catalogue channel. Mandela Catalogue is a really well done analog horror channel, I suggest checking it out (obviously if this is your type of stuff)
This was genuinely one of the most unnerving things I've seen in a while. I can't imagine how fucked up my sleep schedule would’ve gotten if I was watching this for the first time without Markiplier to mediate it.
The key thing is to record double wide. One side is the game in regular 1080 resolution and the other side is the webcam in regular 1080 resolution. Doing this for recordings lets you manipulate the webcam side around just like Mark and Sean do. Seemingly easy, but many prefer to just resize their webcam on the game and leave it.
@@SlothFang you need to be careful when doing this. Although a janky option, messing with multiple layers of video require a lot of editing power. A lot of bigger youtubers have seperate cams/audio to make it significantly easier to edit seperately. Usually costing around 1k for the luxury.
After you've run into enough monstrosities, the fact of facing a monstrosity doesn't faze you as much as the specific details of its monstrousness might.
Weird thing I noticed: Mark accidentally said "stress" in a polyphonic voice at 19:06. Polyphonic singing is typically done when two notes are sung at the same time, this is caused by pushing just the right amount of air between the false folds and vocal folds. The more you know.
Gonna be honest, I came to the comments to embrace the style that Analog Horror is supposed to be, and I began to nearly cry because of the stress it caused.... Gotta love human imagination
@@pineappleparty1624 Everyone perceives fear differently, see. What may be unsettling for some, will be normalcy for others. Say, an unusual fear I have is that of cats, yet, not many other people are afraid of cats, yes? So, in conclusion, analogue horror pokes at my innate fear of 'reality', unsettling sounds, and strange fantastical experiences that may pose a threat to me. How other view analogue horror, I do not know. I think the genre of horror that plays with Uncanny Valley is not nearly explored enough, so I like the concepts in this and how they make the antagonist scarily human-like
There is one significant exhibition of the Mandela Catalogue/Uncanny Valley-esque horror that I believe is unsung. The movie “Truth or Dare” creepy shit mane
IMO this is one of the best types of horror. No cheap jumpscares, no chase scenes, just pure dread built on the fear of the unknown and unnatural. 10/10, one of my fave videos in a while, and to the people who made both the Maple County game and the Mandela Catalogue video, well done.
I was honestly fully expecting at least one jump scare because they tend to be so prevalent in horror games now. And I was bracing myself through this whole video waiting for one but the only one i got was from Mark himself at the very end. lol
Hands down the best way to get a person scared is not to scare them, but to put all the tools and material into their brain so they scare themselves for you. Nobody knows how to scare the crap out of someone better than their own mind.
same! i saw someone else play this and i totally forgot to check out the lore myself lol edit: also im too chicken to watch alone so watching with mark and the comments section helps :D
This. This was creepy. Not scary, creepy. The unnatural idea of alternates, and the distorted images. The twisted calls of "Let me in Mark", the denial to help those in an alternate encounter. Terrifying. Loved it though.
Probably my favorite form of horror. They aren't cheap like jumpscares, but instead know what makes you tick, and knows exactly how to get under your skin. Also fun fact: The creator of the Mandela Catalogue got inspiration from the pandemic. The months spent cooped up in his own house - a very secure place - got him thinking about how to make something *unsecure* He also said something along the lines of "It wasn't the boogeyman that scared me as a child, but the idea of coming home one day, going to your room, and seeing yourself standing there." That's definitely the inspiration behind the alternates, and he did a fantastic job portraying them.

@@GeekMan237 >Steals >Non Profit >Says Inspired in Game Description Why are you spamming this lame comment on every post that's positive about this game?
One of my biggest fears is distorted faces. I watched Mandela catalogue, and i could not sleep for a while. And now this, this broke me. Credit to Mark for playing this i could never.
It was the way they began to describe the features of the thing that did it for me. I can’t pinpoint it exactly, but just the fact that these things are roaming around in that universe with *those* faces just-
I don’t dream very much, but growing up and even still now sometimes, I’d have a recurring nightmare of being in a void like space surrounded by distorted faces. I remember each one had a different feature, but I can’t remember exactly what they were. Seeing this reminded me so much of that dream.
This whole thing reminds me of that theory that the existence of the Uncanny Valley implies that there is an evolutionary reason for humans to fear something that looked human but wasn't. This actually gave me chills all over when I watched this video. Really good job to the developer/creator!
The uncanny valley is evolutionary oversight most likely, in reality, but fuck if that isnt a horrifying theory Edit: I just had the realization that it could have come from the fact other species of human in the genus homo existed and thus our ancestors, as neanderthals evidently were, aggressive towards them. Homo erectus, for example, had a vastly more varied set of facial features on top of a structure that was already not like ours or our ancestors.
What makes a game like this scary isn't the jumpscares or gore, but just thr uncanny valley mixed with ominous sense of something being absolutely wrong but not sure what.
Not exactly sure what you mean, but alternates kill people and then make themselves into a clone of you, trying to use that form to get closer to others and you know
If anybody is wondering why this is so unsettling, it is because the game makes use of ‘the uncanny valley’ which is the designation for things that look very human but which we (for an unknown reason) know are definitely not. It is the small things such as slightly displaced facial feature or simply an extremely slightly impaired voice that can trigger this gut instinct that we have.
Also the original series weaponizes fear, the alternate gets you with your worst fears specifically. So you start getting scared of yourself being scared lol
Fun fact (2 years later 💀) this game is made by Thorne Baker, which is the actor of Thatcher in Mandela Catalogue. The voice at the beginning of the game is him. He’s also a singer called Teenage Disaster

@@wastingsun thats why its great having a name like Salem (unless its about the witch trials or based in massachusetts like Little Hope or Murdered Soul Suspect) because I don’t get slightly scared when my names mentioned LOL. I do remember playing Little Hope and it was the first one in a while and I was not paying attention for a sec and jumped when the game said my name
This game plays with the animal intellect (of those who have eyes) for the recognition of objects and other living beings, consciously processing said inputs as correct and plausible. When we see these altered images, especially those that are incredibly realistic but still implausible, our intellect tells us that there is something deeply wrong with them, hence the uncanny valley effect. All animals who even somewhat rely on vision have the intelligence to process the imagery of their surroundings and conceptualise them, to understand what surrounds them, but when that safety of understanding turns into the uncertainty and not understanding, that results in fear. All in all, brilliant play. Exactly how you're supposed to make horror.
@@killer_tampon8129 to sum up this comment: If something we see isn't normal to us, it sparks fear. Like if you saw the thumbnail of the video, you'd notice features that don't at all seem normal. If that makes you at least feel uneasy, you should know what the comment means now.

Thats not really a special characteristic. The majority of animals have the ability to tell whether other animals are their same species, or real, unless their brains are incredibly small.
@@hypnotoad311 The majority of animals also have special characteristics to help them define species. For some fish, it may be illuminated scales in different texture. For us, however, we're used to different variables. Man this is one of the scariest horror games I've seen in a while, there's just something about distorted/uncanny but still real looking people that does it for me
It's actually a genetically coded thing for humans, we find anything that appears mostly human but has something obviously inhuman unsettling because we weren't the only humanoid creatures on the planet but we were the last humanoids standing.
The Mandela Catalog has been my newest fear in the last few months; I watched the vid about a week after it came out, and I absolutely hated it in the best way. It unnerved me, made me check over my shoulder, jump at every little noise, and now I double check someone that walks by me when I'm out at night, walking my dog. It instilled a new unnatural fear in me; and I absolutely love it.
At 17:10, I am just fascinated that full-grown adults can be scared when someone knocks at midnight while little children can see a man in their closet and still be calm.
Analog horror is probably the only horror that actually gives me serious anxiety. When Heathcliff started recording I actually had to pause the video because home video stuff freaks me out. This is my first exposure to the Mandela Catalogue and I am not disappointed. This was genuinely terrifying

Analog horror is one of the scariest things to have emerged from the internet, or anywhere else in a long time. The fact that you get enough information to be scared, but not enough that it would explain every detail is fantastically done
Good god, I was WAITING so long for this type of horror to finally get the attention it deserves… it really is an effective type of horror especially since the fear of the unknown is rooted well in our instincts as humans
I just find it boring. Must be a new generation thing. People that think words hurt and crap. Guy with a machete.... scary. Bad VHS tapes with bad voice acting? Boring.

Wait, what? Faces scare you? That's a thing? Good lord that sounds awful, just constantly being freaked out when you're out n about. Some kinda livin hell.
The Mandela catalog speaks to a special breed of analog horror. With stuff like local58 and the Walten files, you can either feel safe in the fact that it is not a threat to you, the individual or is so fantastical that you can easy detach from it respectively. The Mandela Catalog is something personal; physically deranged doppelgangers invading your home. The idea of a home invader in the dead of night is already a frightening concept but... To come face to face with it and its... you or someone you know but something is clearly, clearly wrong. It's terrifying.
I have no idea how the two go together, but this popped up on my recommended while I was watching Mandela Catalogues, and you should totally watch them. Absolutely horrifying.
Markiplier learning about the Mandela Catalogue was something I didn't know I needed. The creator of Mandela Catalogue AND Wendigoon commenting was the icing on this cake. Bless Thorne Baker for bringing three of my favorite TH-camrs together in one video and in its comment section
What I think is really cool is how Alex Kister was able to make the concept of humans being creepily replaced feel new and scary. It's the same trope that has existed for decades of sci-fi and horror, but he did an amazing job of making it feel real.

What's peculiar about the "Uncanny Valley" effect, is that it suggests that somewhere in the evolution of humans, we evolved to be disturbed and/or scared of... something.
Very true,
In addition, unpredictable and chaotic noises, specially the scream of women and children are naturally carved into our brains as a sign of threat. Mixing this with realistic footage instead of cartoon-ish or at least some what unrealistic graphics that others usually use, and the distortion of normal stuff like sounds and faces, giving them more unnatural properties, results the worst possible for our beains

Also fun fact: The creator of the Mandela Catalogue got inspiration from the pandemic. The months spent cooped up in his own house - a very secure place - got him thinking about how to make something *unsecure*
He also said something along the lines of "It wasn't the boogeyman that scared me as a child, but the idea of coming home one day, going to your room, and seeing yourself standing there." That's definitely the inspiration behind the alternates, and he did a fantastic job portraying them.

Goes for terror rather than horror.
The fact that it's an uncertain threat instead of an obvious one is what gets me.
this is the first truly scary horror game ive seen in a while, ive got that thing where faces creep me the frick out and this was just off the charts. my heart is beating a million miles an hour.
OMG BROO SAME!!
lol scared
The game was so short tho, it was mostly the Mandela Catalog videos
Watch the fnaf training tapes
Wait, what? Faces scare you? That's a thing? Good lord that sounds awful, just constantly being freaked out when you're out n about. Some kinda livin hell.
This is genuinely the most scared I've felt in years even with Mark cracking jokes 😳
For real! I felt the same way
mark cracking jokes is hilarious
Update:
I understand the connection
Fun Fact: The guy who made Maple County, Thorne Baker, is now a member of the main cast.
He plays the role of Lt. Thatcher Davis.
He was also a former member of spider gang
If Mark is into this kind of stuff, he should definitely check out the Walten files. Especially considering his relationship to FNaF as well
god ikr i really hope one day he reacts to it
You read my mind, but i think he will joke about how bald is Sophie for keep playing after the [REDACTED]

Watching the mandela catalogue with mark should be a series so I don’t have to watch it by myself
I saw it by myself, at 2 am, in the dark... Don't hahahaha
I watch it and I still have nightmares, however I would love to watch it again
coryxkenshin watched it, pretty fun too.
@@hey-gx5fk You and I, my friend, are part of a group called masochists.
agreed. i can say that for certain, my pants have been sharted upon having watched it. as they have been for the past fo
What I think is really cool is how Alex Kister was able to make the concept of humans being creepily replaced feel new and scary. It's the same trope that has existed for decades of sci-fi and horror, but he did an amazing job of making it feel real.
