This game seems to be partially inspired by the story of The Tell-Tale Heart. An Edgar Allen Poe story about a man who lives with an old dude with a creepy eye. The man becomes increasingly convinced the old man’s eye is evil, so much so the man kills the old man. And when the police come to investigate the sounds he confesses to the crime solely because he believes the cops can hear the man’s heart beating under the floorboards like he can. Though the man thinks it’s the old man’s heart beating, many interpret that it’s the own man’s heart beating (Had to fix it because it was a little inaccurate, hope this helps!)
This sounds more like a real case, considering the faces of the people and the woman. I *swear* it has some resemblance to a case I’ve read about before
Actually he doesn’t care about the beating of the man’s heart. He kills the man because he believes that the evil eye is evil and therefore should be killed. So every night at midnight for 6 nights he went to the doorway and over the course of a couple hours looked into the room. But he wouldn’t just kill the old man because then he would be insane and he is not insane(sarcasm). On the seventh night the old man wakes up and the guy freezes until he hears the beating of the heart and goes into a frenzy and murders the old man because the eye is open. Then the police come and the man is super nice to them and invites them inside and has tea with them. Slowly he hears the old man’s heartbeat from beneath the floorboard and becomes increasingly agitated because the police aren’t reacting to it at all and so they must be slighting him! He then confesses to end the torture and rips up the floorboard and holds up the old man’s heart.
I love how Mark's reactions to jumpscares are ''Hi'' or ''Hello''. Having worked as a scare-actor in Halloween Horror Nights twice before, that was literally some people's reactions to being scared so they would literally go all around the haunted house saying Hi to the ''ghosts'' that scared them how polite.
Once I walked home at 3am in a city and got stalked by a weird dude, he was just a few centimeters behind me, my only response was to turn to face him and say "hi how are you?" with a blank stare, he laughed then walked off. I was lucky he wasn't a serious threat but I still find it weird how stupid my reaction was.
For some of the confused out there as towards the story here: Samantha is a mother and wife who murdered the men in her life for likely extreme possessive reasons (or at least that's what it seems). The newspaper clipping shows "DIVORCE RATING HIGH" in bold and all the nooses everywhere likely states that the son was suicidal and the father was planning on leaving her or at least she thought he was so she killed them and put them in the floorboards as a sort of macabre way of "keeping" them. The third victim was a neighbor whom she killed out of panic, breaking into his house and hammering him. The 4th was a cop called in to see what's going on before she kills him too, and records it for her dark web streaming channel. The existence of this streaming platform probably states that she was already a killer to begin with, adding a possible reasoning why the husband might have wanted to leave her and the son being suicidal. I watched ManlyBadassHero play this game a while back and this version Mark is playing is likely updated as the faces at 26:38 never undistort and the clip at 7:57 was labeled *1997* not 2007.
Also, this story feels similar to me, I feel like I saw a newspaper clipping about it when I was younger and still living in Minnesota… also it does really sound like a Minnesota type of crime, I say this because in the past the nicest people came from there, and the most brutal of serial killers
I noticed that too. I remember watching a documentary on his troubled life. I can't remember if they said he was dead or not. But in the documentary those who were close to him spoke as though he passed, and he wasn't in the film himself.
Felt like watching her descent into madness. The eyes everywhere, she felt watched. The “hide” she didn’t feel safe in her own home anymore. “Go to sleep”, her perception of death and suicide is warped. Very well done. Good game.
that woman really did not like being told they should get a divorce. so killed her husband. son came to check up. killed him someone got evidence, he got killed. cop came by, got killed. all of them got put under the floor. the eyes where either the victims having stared at her when she killed them, or the thought of people looking at her know she was a murderer.
I like to think that when checking for monsters under the bed, it's not to make sure none are there, it's to make sure they're still there. Easier to keep track of them if you know where they are
I really like how far and developed the indie community has gotten with analog horror, despite all the buzz words and general / overused graphics, it always seems to get me excited and terrified just from the concept!
This game really reminds me of the story “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe. For some people that don’t know the story: A man was living with an elderly man who had, he called it, one “filmy pale-blue vulture-eye” which he hated. He loved the old man dearly and had no reason to do him harm, yet one day he had plotted to murder the old man because of the eye. For seven nights the man would constantly peek in the old man’s room, giving just enough light to shine onto the old man’s eye. On the eighth night the old man woke up as the narrator slips up and makes a noise, the narrator lights a lantern and shines it right in the vulture-eye. The old man’s heart began to beat very loudly, louder and louder, so the man decided to strike. He made careful calculation of the murder, attempting the perfect crime, complete with dismembering the body in the bathtub and hiding it under the floorboards. Yet right when he hid the body parts he kept hearing a thumping sound which he thought was the dead man’s heart. The next day the police arrived asking if everything was ok, and the man invited them in thinking there was no way they would find the old man. The thumping grew increasingly loud, and he thought the police could hear it (they couldn’t). So he confessed and dug up the floorboards to reveal the old man. As it turned out, there was no actual heartbeat, it was the man’s guilt of killing him, and the guilt was constantly hearing the heartbeat (the final thing that he heard from the old man) remembering what he had done.
It’s always fascinating to see Mark comment on the same general things of horror games that most people kind of gloss over, like how the houses are always in some sort of strange abyss, or how every other person in the house with the MC is suddenly grandma, lol
Its a pretty effective way of handling spooks. Most scary games depend on the player either running away or moving cautiously towards them to build up the spook factor. Openly confronting it while shouting and charging dispels the illusion pretty fast.
i love the "go to sleep" twist in the end. establishing the phrase "go to sleep" to always mean sleeping for the night through the tasks list then using its other darker meaning for the ending was well done
Fun fact here!: That painting at around 2:56 is actually a painting by Francis Bacon called "Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X", done in 1953. Quite fitting for how eerie and visceral this game is.
I think the breathing floor concept is cool. It’s like the ceiling moving as if it were alive, or giving other inanimate objects or structures human qualities. It’s creepy just thinking about it
The scare at 24:07 just creeps me out the most. Something about her expression and pose that’s slightly shaking is just so eerie. And also just her sudden appearance at the stairs. This game honestly has great presentation and atmosphere and that moment is a great example of it.
this whole game was so unsettling to play through. that part got me the worst I think. I expected a jumpscare or something at some point, but it never came. this game managed to spook me without cheap scare tactics
This was pretty well done! Showing the devolving mind of the main character and then slowly revealing what's happened in a slow, and sinister manner made for a really enthralling story. Especially how everything is seen in the eyes of her and shows how she sees things. Was really fun to play and a great game!
@Logan Roof News whoever is behind this bot and bots like this i hope your family suffers and they blame you for it. You will harbour guilt for the rest of your life, and may you never know peace.
this kinda reminds me of trauma induced psychosis and paranoia. seeing faces everywhere (maybe of your abuser), being watched, like you're in danger. and the cute note thing makes me think of the little memo paper they give out at mental hospitals
just hopped on to this video, all i know is that "the floor is breathing" is already instantenously a way more terrifying concept than "the floor is lava"
@@clowntown5768 Incomprehensible living houses that slowly make their presence known are such a terrifying concept to me. House of Leaves comes to mind
I'd say both would be a pretty terrifying situation to be in. The difference is the floor breathing is not an immediate or obvious threat but you dont know anything about it which makes it terrifying. We know what lava is, which makes it still an unfortunate and scary situation to be in but it's less creepy than the unknown.
I love how the style of this game changes with the days. The first "daily routine" thing looks like a generic horror game, the "open your eyes" part has the quality of a cheesy 90's game with the copypasted 2d trees and assets, and then there's a part with fairly good graphics compared to the previous parts. It's weird but I like it
yeah when I played through this myself, the part where you’re a police officer checking on the woman you play as really threw me off. Went from 2D PS1 textures to high res 3D models
Notice the notes check list, and when you complete the mission, you get an updated check list(however you notice things missing from the list) which tells me you need to "Check off things that are Clearly Coming Your Way and Not to Forget Them."
26:44 I would not be surprised if these versions of the shots come from "This person doesn't exist." The third picture has another 'human', but it's way too distorted and squashed to the side to resemble one. This was an issue (maybe still is) that happened with the images, as well as the result not looking quite right as you look at them closely. The pictures used for the main character and the four victims do look like what you find in Dal-E. :')
Mark should play Outer Wilds. It perfectly fits everything he loves in games. It's a mystery, space exploration game that is incredibly story driven and has an entire DLC devoted to horror and spooks. There is nothing I would love more than to see him try it out.
Okay so that face, after Mark boarded up the window at the beginning, scared the SHIT out of me. Made me physically JUMP. Haven’t been scared like that in a while. Well done
dude i LOVED the way the creator of this game caused such anxiety after like the second murder- when you were about to enter the bedroom and you just kept looking around saying "what is it?!" "who is it!?" that kind of anxiety is terrifying but also so realistic for how the character was probably feeling and it just made my skin crawl
Markiplier, a seasoned 33 year old veteran horror game player, who has probably played over 600 horror games at this point in time…. “I’m a Big Brave Boiii”
I love the Little part of the game where the 5 Little ducks song plays. Each time you watch it one person dissappears like the in the song where one duckling dissappears. And plus the song slowed makes it really creepy and unsettling and gives an uncanny vibe. Very noice detail
I can't count how many times I use "Markisms" in my daily life. "Oh that's DORK" "I'M A BIG BRAVE BOY" "Grandma?" It makes me chuckle because your content always brightens my mood. I'll even still occasionally call things "Goop juice" from your RE7 playthrough 😅
I wonder if any creators of these games ever find out that mark played their game and see all the positive things he has to say about them if it were me I would be hella honored
Hi, I am a friend of the developer and when we had originally saw the release of this video, I immediately let him know. We had a fun time watching it in a voice call together and celebrated that it had gotten popular. It was very much big news to everyone and we were all very happy for him. I can't speak on his behalf, but I'm certain he is grateful for the kind words.
i absolutely love watching Mark play horror games because he makes them more of an adventure style game than scary. he deals with everything humorously and it is my favorite thing to watch. jumpscare? "oh hi there friend! how are you?" terrifying message? "...well that's charming"
I'll try explaining the story for those who don't understand it (please do correct me if I'm wrong!). So you play through the mind of a serial killer and witness their deteriorating mental state before the day they are captured. Each person you play through is a different perspective because you are trying to understand the deaths of four innocent people. On the night with all the nooses, you are investigating one of the deaths and how they died. Each person you see out of the four images is you reliving their memories of how they died, as like the note you receive dating February 4th, 1992. The first biblical verse is the game condemning you of your actions, as you are the protagonist. On the day you recieve the phone call, we find out that the protagonists name is Samantha, through a note saying that Samantha's husband has been out of touch recently. Samantha finds a trash bag and proceedes to stuff a corpse inside, and then buries it under her floorboards. This action depicts how Samantha killed her husband and buried his corpse under the house. She avoids any interaction with others so she can keep this a secret. In the next night you are unable to sleep, and find a figure that is speculated to be the protagonist's husband. Samantha then finds a biblical verse telling her to, "open her eyes." When you do, you're teleported to a house outside and a playground nearby. You find a note which tells you a neighbor had witnessed what Samantha had done. It is found out she tortured and killed her son and husband, and that she posted what she had done to the police for them to see. She is instructed by a neighbor to "finish what she started" and she then kills the neighbor. Ending: You now play as a police officer named Mark. Mark enters Samantha's house, but she knocks him out and ties him to a chair. Now you are teleported to a room with the protagonist and cameras all around you. Samantha kills him, but backup soon arrives. Samantha tries to kill herself using a gun, but she fails, and instead ends up with facial changes and scars do to it, as the image of her in the game shows. This game shows how Samantha was still haunted by the memory of the people she murdered. It has a very psychological goal to it. The house "breathing" symbolized the hate from the people she murdered. That is all. Hope I got all of it. Let me know if there are any mistakes!
I think she actually kills her son first? Or maybe her husband first? And then the other confronts her on it and gets murdered to, that’s why that second person comes
i think the house breathing was more so a reference to an edgar allen poe poem of basically the same story, person murders someone and puts them in the floorboards then ends up going crazy snd turning themselves in thinking they can hear the heartbeat through the floor
I really like indie horror. It means that so many different horror things can be made whilst not being extended to the point where the thing that was scariest about it is no longer scary
The real horror in this game is that the main character had extreme psychosis and clearly didn't get the help she needed until it was tragically too late.
@@XabibGG it’s more of,”This could’ve been prevented if they had gotten help before the murders and those people would’ve lived,” thing and not,”Murder under insanity is a-ok!” Kinda thing. At least that’s what I think
@@XabibGG that's not what they're saying? i have some mental problems and i have done some bad stuff (not as bad as murder) and i wouldn't have done them if i got the help i needed. it still doesn't excuse what i did and it could have been prevented if i got the support i needed
@Eggo Five Nights at Freddy’s 4. Every time you complete a mini game phase in between the nights, the Fredbear Plush says “Tomorrow is another day.” Mark has an incredibly famous history with the FNAF franchise, especially the 4th one.
I think the concept of breathing floors comes from a real life phenomenon where the ground in a forest was moving up and down in a breath-like pattern, caused by mushrooms beneath the layer of dirt that collectively had the strength to do so
I literally JUST watched another TH-camr play this and thought “wow, mark should play this” AND THS. I WAKE UP TO YOU PLAYING IT??? the universe is watching me
To add on to the weirdness, the painting(s) on the wall(s) (that is duplicated) is by my all time favorite painter, Francis Bacon. And that is one of my favorite pieces by him. Feeling very “main character” right now
!!JUMPSCARE TIMESTAMPS!! (SPOILERS AHEAD) 3:54 - Loud sound and person appears behind in-game character 6:51 - Loud sound and Mark reacts to hyper-realistic eyes under the bed 7:34 - Loud knocking at door 14:00 - Voice suddenly whispering from the phone 16:42 - Demonic screaming and zoomed-in painting of a screaming face 17:08 - Sudden, loud knocking 24:16 - Whispering after lights suddenly go out These were the main ones that I caught, but let me know if I missed any! :)
As a Samantha I can vouch for myself and all other Samanthas when I say we definitely don't have breathing floors and we DEFINITELY haven't murdered anyone. Probably.
This was such a fun tell-tale heart reminiscent story, but game style; I really like it! And as always, I enjoy that watching Mark play horror always makes it way funnier than it should be 😅
I actually REALLY like this game! It's dark, doesn't reveal too much too soon, and keeps you on your toes. Also, the Morbius cameo really brought it all together. Loved how he morbed all over the floating eyeballs :)
The painting seen at 2:58, and 3:18 is 'Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X' by the late Francis Bacon, a super talented artist who was active from the 40s to the 60s. The painting is a distorted version of 'Portrait of Innocent X' by Spanish artist Diego Velázquez. Francis Bacon's work is absolutely fantastic, cannot recommend checking his work out enough!
It would be cool if someone made a mc escher stair painting as a horror game while unknown monsters who have physically adapted to the environment chase you. It would be a very scary game.
My computer bugged out right at 29:25 leaving a prolonged singular note and marks scared face, which should have informed me that it was my PC. However, I was playing a game on another screen which didn't freeze so I thought it was another one of Marks scares, and then both screens began glitching out as the singular prolonged tone began rapidly shifting pitch before both screens went black and the sound disappeared, which was concerning because the screen was the only thing lighting up my room, so now I was sitting in silence and in darkness... So yeah, this isn't the first time my pc bugging out has spooked me, and somewhat surprisingly not the first time it has involved Markeplier....Also good video, gave me the good spooky vibes to be extra spoked by my PC

I expected a jumpscare or something at some point, but it never came. this game managed to spook me without cheap scare tactics

just hopped on to this video, all i know is that "the floor is breathing" is already instantenously a way more terrifying concept than "the floor is lava"
Indeed it is. Something as big as a house being alive is terrifying.
@@clowntown5768 Being inside that said thing without even realizing before hand it was alive is the horrifying part.

Both of the AI were credited in the credits section, so I’d say you were right.

Well done
dude i LOVED the way the creator of this game caused such anxiety after like the second murder- when you were about to enter the bedroom and you just kept looking around saying "what is it?!" "who is it!?" that kind of anxiety is terrifying but also so realistic for how the character was probably feeling and it just made my skin crawl

i absolutely love watching Mark play horror games because he makes them more of an adventure style game than scary. he deals with everything humorously and it is my favorite thing to watch.
jumpscare? "oh hi there friend! how are you?"
terrifying message?
Samantha then finds a biblical verse telling her to, "open her eyes."
When you do, you're teleported to a house outside and a playground nearby.
@@cass6082 I think it's the husband who wanted to divorce which lead her to her first kill. All the others were probably to cover up the first one
I really like indie horror. It means that so many different horror things can be made whilst not being extended to the point where the thing that was scariest about it is no longer scary

I think the concept of breathing floors comes from a real life phenomenon where the ground in a forest was moving up and down in a breath-like pattern, caused by mushrooms beneath the layer of dirt that collectively had the strength to do so
