Yeah, Persona 5 was a hell of an experience. And I'm thinking about breaking into some of the newer releases. Thing about Persona 5 is that I could dig right into it since I've already reviewed 1-4. Final Fantasy XV may take some time to get to though! :-P
totally agree with you this is the best Persona game yet. every mechanic has been perfected from story, gameplay, dungeons etc... i truly believe that if you play Persona 5 as your first game in the series then trying to go back is hard.

The story is meh because of the horrible pacing,the characters are terrible,Phantom Thieves members(except for the MC) don't get character development in the main story,80% social link abilities are pointless,game is too easy even on hard mode(merciless mode is just cheap because it reduces the amount of exp you earn) and MOST IMPORTANTLY,*YOUR CHOICES DON'T MATTER 95% OF THE TIME!*
Stop calling it the best game in the series. It may be your favourite but as a JRPG,it fails in many categories
I played the games backwards from P5-P3 lol. I haven’t quite finished P3 yet, and it was a little hard for the first few hours of P4G then P3P, but so far I can say that it hasn’t been bad at all. I can’t tell which I prefer between 4 and 5 yet, and P3 is damn good so far.
you sound like a guy who probably likes the smt series and most likey loved persona 3 if you're gonna bring up difficulty if you want a grind fest play p3 or smt the story isn't that bad I still think p4 and p3 had better stories and characters but p5 has a pretty good story and your main cast is pretty good no one I would say that I hate p4 I hate like 2 characters p3 has the best squad of characters but man that gameplay just ruins it for a lot of people

It took way longer to put together than expected, but I'm pretty happy with the results. :)
I only started playing the series in January, yet in that time I have now beaten Innocent Sin, 3, 4, 5, and part of Eternal Punishment. I've gone from a complete newcomer to series veteran over the course of less than half a year, and I can now honestly say that this is one of my favorite video game series now! Your reviews of the games also introduced me to your channel, Derek, which is just icing on the cake!

Jordan3D Mine's 3. I got spoiled about who the murder was in persona 4 and the story felt too innocent and childish in comparison to 3 without that twist, which I loved more than anything for its dark, serious but realistic problems. Also, after playing persona 3, persona 4 felt lacking in the challenging department after having to drag my whole team alone through 260+ floors.

This is definitely a game I would recommend it's my first dip into the persona series and I was actually surprised with myself when after I beat it I found myself playing the game again with new game+. There's also the added benefit of noticing the little things that are going on once you know the secrets that are going on behind the scenes.
This is also a really good game to play on the vita, The gameplay is pretty smooth in the most part there are some times in which it seems to lag a little but I think that's just my Internet connection when transferring the game for my PS4 to the vita.

After I first beat the game I played a little of persona 3 portable and if I had done the reverse flags would've been going off of my head the moment Igor first spoke and I realize that wasn't his normal voice.

I was hesitant to trade it in knowing the steelbook was amazing. But then Royal came out and blew it out of tbe water. My favourite steel books/art styles are P5R and Catherine Full Body.

Nice review, though I noticed there actually were a few pallete swaps in the game, like Legion-Chronozon and Slime- Black Ooze. It's not a lot compared to most rpgs, but they are in P5 man

Sweet review! I bought this game on launch, but was busy with Breath of the Wild. Then Trails in the Sky The 3rd came out. Now Fire Emblem Echoes is out. My copy of P5 is still sealed lol. I really need to get to it.

Tho i have to say my one gripe with P5 was that the cover-system didnt almost feel fully fleshed out; the limitation of the camera when in a corner and the sometimes unclear targeting caused me to end up rolling out of cover into an enemy on more than one occasion
My god, i agree, not only that. But this game has become my favorite Persona game of the series... I don't know if i can call it the best. But between the subtle reference and doing it by making characters, and characters interactions to be the opposite of the characters they are making the reference(The Niijima Sisters it's the perfect example, if you get what i mean). The come back of old mechanics; the introduction of new mechanics; the refinement of both; the music on which i completely agree, it's the best of the series; the story keeping some light hearted moments, but still being serious with a bit of SMT style to it; the real plot twist, which is also a reference.
I LOVE THIS GAME, im already doing my second playthrough, by doing it in new game plus, and im already over 200 hours, and not getting bored of the music, gameplay, character interactions or story.

I don't think I could do a walk-through, but most of the games I review have full play-throughs up on my streaming channel. I don't have a set schedule though.

longtime sub here, when, if ever, do you plan on tackling the tales of series and fire emblem, two of the biggest franchises in their subset of jrpgs, action jrps and strategy rpjs, respectively?
Howdy! As it turns out I just picked up a copy of Fire Emblem for Wii the other day, got a pretty sweet deal on it from GameStop of all places. The Tales games are a little daunting because of how many there are, it's tough to pick a starting point. But I'm working on it! For what it's worth, I'll be digging into another franchise I've ignored too long next: Suikoden. :)
Also if its radiant dawn you picked up, fair warning: when at the main menu choosing the difficulty for your playthrough during the translation process the translation team mistranslated normal as hard,hard as normal and lunatic as hard. So basically the english version of easy is actually just normal lol. Good luck!

I love this game, but I didn't find myself falling in love with it the same way I did with P4. Maybe it was P4's tranquil setting and more relaxed overall feel that appeals to me more, but I definitely prefer P4 over P5. Still, I prefer P5's cast over P4's cast, with the exception of Yukiko and Chie.
It's the best out of the last three without a doubt, but I still think Persona 2 is my favorite. Now you owe yourself to play mainline SMT (If you haven't already) and become the wisest of the wise in RPGs. Keep up the good work.
I keep hearing great things about this game but I've never played any of the other ones. Can I just jump into this one without issues?
You can absolutely jump right into 5. The games all tend to exist in the same overall world, and there are subtle nods to older games, but none of that really grants you special knowledge of what's going on behind the scenes or anything. I'd say go for it. :)

My favorite game of all time
Okay the review was pretty good, but I felt the need to input my opinions. The only thing I felt persona 5 approved on compared to 3 and 4 was the dungeon crawling. He said that stealth was never a huge thing in the past games, but that's false. In 5 the stealth is like a sub par 3rd person shooter. Where you run to a wall. And can use this to get the advantage on enemies. While that's cool and all, the other games had you waiting or finding a path to get behind an enemy, and hitting/shooting them before they see you. Getting the advantage is just as huge in the past games. And I will even say the past games had better stealth. Because the dungeons in 5 almost all the time had enemies in positions that were unavoidable. Meaning you had to fight practically all the enemies in your way. And even in the times when I did manage to run from an enemy using the wall mechanic which was very few (I'd say 12 times), that just spawns more enemies to make it more impossible the next time. In 3 and 4, every single battle (except bosses obviously) was avoidable. No roadblocks like 5. The only thing the wall mechanic does is let you get the advantage which was always a thing anyways. Also, i saw many people point out that the social links in this game are the best because of the benefits. While i admit this game has the best waifu roster (even tho mitsuru is goat), most of those added benefits are in 3 and 4 anyway. Most if not all are directly related to battle and the knew gunpoint mechanic. While 3 and 4 had the end battle card shuffle, which pretty much gave you every benefit from the get go. And it got better during the course of the game, so nothing is missable like in p5 if you dont do a social link. The ones outside battle were pretty much given from the get go as well. And the more likely a character would do more damage on top of your hit was ties to there social link too. And getting personas was more fair in p3, you just needed to keep track of the persona you wanted in the shuffle. The negotiation mechanic felt pretty random at times. Then he said 5's soundtrack is best. I love it, I love all persona music, but I have to give that crown to p3. Easily my favorite. And the most varied. Each track had soo much personality, where as I feel most of 5's soundtrack sounds pretty similar. P3 easily has my fav battle theme (the answer) and omg, the dorm music. Specifically towards the endgame. Sooo good!!!! And that velvet room remix like damn that's good stuff. So I love persona 5, but I'll still say 4 is best. After a decade of waiting, while not any means bad at all, it wasn't as innovative as I hope. The biggest plus side was the better dungeons. Obviously visuals too, but the graphics still could've been much better. It looks like a ps3 game. But yeah still a Solid entry in one of the best series in all of gaming.
It was worth the wait but (for me) it doesnt top p4 on story. but the gameplay is amazing, the soundtrack is marvelous and the characters are really good. if you get to know them that is, because if you like Haru ( for example) and dont complete her confidant better luck on your new game+.

p3 had a boring as fuck dungeon mode that really killed it for me that and only controlling the MC was so annoying p4 had the same exact problems with dungeons and tbh social links just giving you persona boosts p3 had this problem to p5 revises all that and makes every level up in a connection feel worthwhile plus the dungeon were actually nice and felt like going through different areas mementos feels more like traditional someone which is why it's the worst part of the game
Nah I've seen that opinion and it is valid. Since playing 5, I played 3 and 4, and while 5 is still my personal favorite, I do not fault anyone for preferring the past titles. They're all excellent in their own unique ways.

I sooo wanted to love this game, hell P3 FES is my favourite game of all time, but P5 never klicked with me until the short 8th arc. The semirealistic social commentary on Japanese society was a nice idea (and i think i'm well versed enough in Japanese culture to have picked up every metaphor and commentary), but that also made the main themes less "universal" than let's say "death" (P3) or dealing with your "repressed psychological aspects" (P4). Especially the 7th arc was extremely uninteresting for me as i have no interest in politics at all.
But i think where the game dropped the ball was the extreme redundancy of dialogue lines. Your party members constantly shout plot exposition at you that you already know - again and again. At some point i loathed the moment i heard that i received a text message, knowing i'll read the same thing for the fifth time or to see my that confidants wanted to hang out with me. I know they wanted to make the game feel more natural, but for me sooo much dialogue felt robotic while it didn't add anything to your understanding of the characters. The characters started to feel flat and without personality at these moments. The same thing happened in dungeons, where MOST of the lines were redundant and replacable/switchable. This way the character's distinct personlities were watered down to the point that they felt flat even though they got enough characterization in their designated "social links" (aka confidant interactions). But that's the problem: Outside the confidant interactions there wasn't much interaction between your party members at all. They all became static and felt like plot exposition devices... nothing more. Take Persona 3 for instance: EVERY character developes throughout the entire game and it doesn't feel as structured as Persona 4 was for instance. But even Persona 4 did one thing in a much more elegant way: The bosses in the dungeons were you Party members or rather their supressed personality flaws... This created a very strong and intimate bond between you and the characters. This wasn't the case with Persona 5. While they tried to replicate the P4 formula, they missed the above mentioned reason why P4's structure was so engaging... Your characters
were intimately tied to the main plot. It also didn't help that there weren't many character interactions outside the confidant substories either.

Ahh yes, I'll put Persona 5 on my list of "I'll play this once it comes to PC" list, which is growing quite long...
It really baffles me why such high profile releases don't come to PC, considering how well Bandai Namco, SEGA, Square Enix and Idea Factory's JRPG releases have been doing on Steam. I try to buy games to show that there's interest in JRPG's on PC, and sincerely hope that the big players in the scene, Atlus and Square, will start releasing games their newer games on the platform.

TMS was more my jam. P5 is bigger and flashier in every way but Tokyo Mirage Sessions was just so chill and gave me a smile on my face every time I played it.

Persona 5, imo, was a way too long. I got bored at the beginning of Palace 4 and it only got worse from there. Fantastic art direction, combat, and style, however. Too bad the dialogue is so repetitious. Literally every plot beat is repeated and reiterated at least 3 times. P5 could easily have been an 80 hour game if it wanted to be.
Huh I felt that the game was short and started to move way to fast when you gotten Haru, not much free time to spend time with confidants and other stuff

Games are a highly subjective experience, this one just didn't bother me in ways it bothered you I suppose. All I can do is talk about my own experiences, and if you find we have similar tastes, maybe you'll discover new games to enjoy as well. :)

But you have to think about all the other gamers aswell.. i understand that you didnt mind the flaws.. listening to youtubers singing praise is why i bought it and honestly i didnt enjoy it as much as ff15 with all the flaws of that game.. you should talk about flaws even if it dont bother you.. games in my country cost $475. Yes so we dont like spending badly... the currency here is $1us is $6 of our dollars.. and we look to advice on buying games from you guys reviewing just note that thanks...

Uhmm, i didnt not like Persona 5, i loved 4 and 3 but i just hate the "mood" and "style" of p5 it honestly makes me sick.
I waited for like 10 years for this game only for it to be a big piss.
I could only get through about 5 hours before i had to stop, and instead played 4 golden again.
I can't help but feel hype is doing this game more favors than it really should. Persona 5 is a good game, but nearly everyone seems to be willfully dismissing its glaring flaws. While the game excels at its gameplay, the narrative is a complete ripoff of Persona 4 once Haru's dungeon is completed and plotholes abound the entire experience. Also, horrendous pacing, but that's a thing that has plagued Persona since the third game. I'd say it's only me, but every complaint I've seen of the game deals with these issues, only to be shushed away by sheeple.

I really do feel like people put P5's story way too high up there, it isn't bad by any means but the execution for important moments were horrendous, by the time you find out it takes about 10-20 hours for the casts to reveal what you already know. They also happen to know through the most coincidental moments. In Haru's case if you were to remove her it wouldn't make a difference to the story AT ALL and I for one like Haru. Also the reveal of the main antagonist was the most facepalm moment in my life because it couldn't be more stupidly obvious than it already was. Nevertheless I still enjoyed the game but I feel like its story is quite weak even in general.

christna lol the true antagonist which is the god of this game was not predictable at all, it blew my mind. The culprit on the other hand was intentionally predictable as the game wanted us to be suspicious of him when we first meet him, so we would have the same opinion of him as the other party members and so what if the culprit was predictable? The game is not a who done it game like p4 as the characters wanted to go after him only after the 5th palace, he was not the focus of the story like p4. Even after his reveal the game didn't try to focus on him as the characters were after the guy commanding the culprit. After the reveal, the culprit was interesting enough to make me keep playing and see how things will play out, the game also did a good job making the culprit pitiable for the most part even though he killed plenty of people.
Odd. I found the game mostly disappointing.
