Not ashamed to admit that this game was basically the reason why I got a PS Vita in the first place. It's soo good. And totally worth it.

Um ..,. You put some pretty prominent spoilers in this review- mainly 6:24 For anyone that is reading this skip about 15 seconds to around 6:40, to avoid this. Otherwise great review. P4G is absolutely my favorite game in the series and if anyone is on the fence, just play it- you will not regret it. I really do suggest avoiding a lot of the spin off games and basically the entire internet while playing Persona 4 because it is really easy to come across spoilers. That's why I'd recommend skipping past 6:24 ...

Super review, Derek! ;) I can't wait for your Persona 5 review!... eventually... :P This game was my introduction to the Persona series and I loved it. My older brother bought this for me for Christmas one year and it sat on my shelf for a good long while. I eventually popped it in on a whim and I was hooked. The intrigue for the murder mystery and the excellent characters kept me coming back to the game whenever I had free time until I completed it. I haven't played the Golden re-release, but I know that I am going to have to at some point. Again, great review!

fantastic review, I'm subscribing. Persona 4 Golden is the my all time favorite game outta the almost 20 years I've been gaming and I'm playing through P3 right now. I've never been a huge JRPG fan but persona just kinda clicked for me. is there any other series you can compare it to?

Persona 4 Golden has to be my one of my Top 10 favorite JRPGs. Practically why I keep my Vita charged. I loved your review and kinda makes me wanna review or just talk about this game here on TH-cam. Maybe someday I’ll consider review my favorite games like you do.

I haven't beaten 4g yet but I'm about 45 hours in and so far I like the gameplay and graphics a lot better but I like the music and story much better in p3. Still both great games in their own right.

I grabbed Persona 5 thanks to you, and I'm loving it so much so far! I sink about 14/13 hours a day into the game. I wish I played the older games to know where the DLC personas came from and who used them!
I just finished this this month, on the 20th to be exact which was pretty awesome considering the importance of that date. This was my third time beating this, first time with golden and now I'm tempted to start it over again, though waiting might be better. Golden is defiantly my personal #1 RPG

+chutoy I think it is best on the Vita, the screen really helps bring to life the games vibrant colors to life.
+Ryan Wheeling Not to mention the games are calibrated for minimal lag on the Vita. However, I only problems with encountered video lag when catching bugs and fish. But being able to play on a normal controller on a larger screen is very nice too. :)

After playing Persona 5 I became hooked. Bought a Vita for this and was surprised that I really liked 4 more than I thought I would. Emulating the older games, found that the others are interesting to play for awhile but for many, they will not hook as heavily as 4 or 5.
I can't wait for the persona 5 Review on The Game Collection - it's only a matter of time ^o^

I've not played a lot of Persona games even though I have quite a few in my collection. I really like the Murder Mystery vibe the game gives off. Is this one that could be played independent of the others?
Absolutely! All of the mainline Persona games can be played on their own, with the exception of the Persona 2 duology. Think of the numbering system like a Final Fantasy game - only difference is, unlike FF, they all take place in relatively the same world.

You are still a bit quiet, but your audio quality is much better now than in your old videos. You're voice is good too, but your volume is too equalized. You almost sound as though you are droning. As though you are in a room afraid to wake somebody up. It makes us strain our ears to listen.
That said, your content is great and your opinions sound well formed. I've subscribed. I hope you take my criticism as constructive and not critical.

Just a note while I could have forgotten as it has been a long time scene I last played persona 1,2 and other megaten games pesona 3 and 4 foucused on 1 theme persona 3 focused on death and mortality a dark theme as a whole while 4 focused on truth a theme that could be dark or light
This is the main reason I like 4 more then 3
As someone who was able to accept my own mortality before I played 3 none of it spoke to me
But as someone who had history with accepting the truth and the things I hate about myself persona 4 had a direct impact on my life other then making people think I went missing

Damn son.
Persona 4 is one of those special Games. It's easily one of my top 3 Games of all time and that was only the Ps2 version. I love Persona 4 golden, they improved a lot without breaking the game, which happens quite a lot in these "improved versions". And, like you said, the voice acting here is extremely good, one of the best english dubs i've ever heard....but i am still really pssed that we neve rgot a dual Audio version, but Arena git one. The japanese cast of voice actors for P4 is pretty much the best you can get. The should have at least released it as a DLC, i would have been glad to pay extra money for this. Well, Persona 4 is still one of the best Games i've ever played and now i'm looking forward to persona 5. Let's see what the have in store for this one ^^

On a sidenote, how highly do you rate this compared to other Persona games? I'm kinda split as to whether I should play the other Persona games as I found Persona 4 slightly too streched out and too bland at times. Are the other games better?
+Tartar Having played through and analyzed each, I think that P4 is probably the most accessible, but P3 has a darker vibe to it. Persona 2 Innocent Sin probably has one of the better overall stories, but they're all pretty long and progress can be slow. If you played 4 and didn't care for it as much, I'd check out Persona 2 Innocent Sin and see how it grabs you. If neither of them end up appealing to you, then it's likely nothing in the series will.
For what it's worth, only Persona 3 and 4 have social links, but the first few games are non-stop dungeons that can wear on you pretty good if you don't take your time with them. I hope that helps. :)
SuperDerek RPGs It's not that I found Persona 4 bad, just overly long, and the combat not all that good (Most bosses devolving into "attack with strongest attack while one character heals"). The story was brilliant towards the end, and the characters were mostly interesting. But you had to play through a lot of uninteresting stuff to get to those parts.
I've played both Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor games, and found them superior to Persona 4 since the content was more focused. Are any of the Persona games more like the Devil Survivor games?
+Tartar I haven't played Devil Survivor yet, so I can't say for certain. But I do think all of the Persona games were rather long-winded. Persona 2 had more varied battle mechanics though, revolving around spell fusion patterns, so that might be closer to your preferences.
SuperDerek RPGs You should definitely play Devil Survivor if you get the chance. The battle system is kinda the same, but the inclusion of a grid-based movement battle system combined with each character controlling two demons makes the tactical depth greater.
The games are in general also much shorter (Around 30 hours) which combined with every scene and battle being important story wise makes the pacing better.
Lol This is the second game to legitimately make me cry, I cried twice, once was tears of sadness at the original ending, and the time was tears of joy by the ending of the epilog. The first game that invoked my tears was FF7 crisis core.

Is a good entry point, aswell P3fes, for the persona franchise.
The only part that drove me nuts about this game is having to listen to Teddie announce on every battle that a character has beaten an enemy or that one of your characters was in trouble.

+Jennifer Daum Nope! Each story is mostly independent of one another. There are a few recurring characters, but you don't really need to know anything about the others to enjoy this one. :)

+Multplat Oh yeah, I'd absolutely recommend the series. SMT fans think it's the worst thing ever only because it's a spinoff that has drawn in such a large audience, which is now starting to shape the way their community looks. There's quite a bit of in-fighting in the fan-group, but that doesn't have to be your problem. It's a great series, and are highly recommended! :)
But you could probably be ok skipping Persona 1, and Persona 3's "The Answer".

SMT fans are often simply worried that the specific character of the mainline SMT games are being changed such that it is more Persona like.
So can I fight in Dungeons as long as I want or no?
You can, but eventually you might run out of healing items and have to leave for the night.
So lets say I don't want to just run through the game and beat and collect everything, can I just explore dungeons indefinitely?I understand what you said about healing, but can one technically dungeon crawl every night with no end in sight if they don''t want to blow through the story?

Thanks! If you want to beat and collect everything, you might need to follow a guide because there's a lot you can miss out on. Once you're in a dungeon, you can pretty much play in that dungeon as long as you want/are able. I think in Persona 3 your characters would get exhausted/sick whatever as a penalty, but I don't recall that being in Persona 4. Also, I think there are limits to how far into some dungeons you can go without progressing the in-game date.

I'm always super conflicted with P4. My experience with Persona is pretty much playing P3P then picking up a Vita and P4G almost immediately afterwards. From a gameplay perspective, P4G is better in almost every way (if only slightly, I appreciated P3P allowing you to control all of the characters unlike the original P3 releases) although the story didn't quite stand out as much as P3's did for some reason. The beginning and end were both really good, but I got fed up with the repeated, near identical story telling through most of the entire middle of the game. Although the dungeons each have their own unique flair, the fact that the story of each dungeon was literally the same kinda threw me off. The "accept yourself" thing was interesting the first couple instances, but by the 4th or 5th party member got kind of old.
I think a lot of this has to do with the character development through Social Links instead of via the story though. My favorite contrasting point between P3 and P4 is the method by which the party members unlock their final Persona forms. In P3, each persona transformation occurs after a pivotal moment in the story based around each character and their story arcs. This made the acceptance and boost in power feel very coordinated and relevant. In P4 on the other hand, these transformations are handled entirely through the social links with each character which could potentially happen at any random time throughout the story. Although the Social Links presented are very good and rich, it's somewhat disappointing to see most of each character's growth happen outside the actual story and therefore be disregarded where it counts. What you're left with is primarily the base changes that the characters undergo upon completing their dungeon.
All of that aside, both are excellent games and I had a great time with both, but after playing through P4 as well as most of the spinoffs, I'm definitely ready for a new kind of storytelling/experience with P5 :D (Dancing All Night's story mode was particularly painful due to being a carbon copy of the most uninteresting part of P4 lol...)
That is a very good critique. I agree. The character growth in P3 was more organic as it flowed from the story itself.

+Bliced please beat it its a really great game - the moment I got it (which is about two weeks ago) I couldn't help myself but to play this game everyday for at least 3-5 hours and I am on my third playthrough now.
I know that the whole visual novel kind of style takes a huge chunk of time until you can get into dungeon crawling action but it has really great characters which are worth the time.
I also still have university (IT and stufff...) so yeah there's that.
A good recommendation would also be Persona 3 Portable or P3P for short or if you own a 3DS Persona Q...
Hope I could give some good advise and to me it really was a shame that type-0 never got an international PSP port or even one for the VITA :/

If you don't wanna invest 100 hours of your time on Persona 4, I very much recommend watching the English dub of Persona 4 The Animation. It has 20 something (24?) episodes, all the voice actors from the game and every important part is shown very well.

I’ve never understood why people complain about how long Persona 4 and 3 take to get you into gameplay. Persona 3 barely takes over an hour to get into shit and Persona 4 takes a few hours, sure, but Persona 5 LITERALLY takes like ten fucking hours to get into the base gameplay you’ll be doing for the rest of the game. Persona 5 Royal is my favorite game ever made, so I’m not complaining. Playing that first is what made me so patient with these games.
People are impatient in general. Personally I don't mind a slow start of the payoff is worth while. And in this case it definitely is. But I think not mentioning that in a review would be a disservice to the people that do mind.
I think it's pretty clear I loved the game based on the review, but I'm mostly here to give people enough info to make informed decisions for themselves. It's one major reason I don't offer scores to games.

I was just thinking out loud in relation to the entire Persona fanbase, and I know it’s an unpopular opinion. Your review of Golden is a lot fairer and more professional than others I’ve seen, as is the case with all your reviews. I just got done binge watching a lot of your reviews and it really took me back and made me nostalgic. It also helped me learn about some games I never knew I wanted to play, so thanks for that!

+Turan X yeah I can understand that. But if you are worried about understanding the story, each games story is separate from the other ones in the series so you wouldn't be lost. If it's a concern that you want to play a previous game to see if you like the series or not, you can play most of them off of the psn store in pretty sure. You could look into that. I don't think persona 4 golden is on there but persona 4 is.
I'm picky, I want Persona 4 Golden because that's the definitive game. I'll wait for a remaster, if it doesn't come I'll just buy Persona 5. I'm definitely interested.

If they do it for a single game, persona 4 is the most likely candidate in my eyes. Since the company has been milking that game for almost 7 years now.

What late-game content are you referring to?
False, unlike P3, all of the games combat/adventuring takes place during the day. Also, certain Social Links were exclusive to night time in P3 as well.
