when people review games that are 5 or more years old it makes me feel okay that I have such a huge backlog LOL never played the Game of the Year Edition of Fallout 3 but New Vegas dlc was amazing
If you played New Vegas first, then you can totally skip Fallout 3 in my opinion. Worse RPG mechanics, total lack of factions and the writing is not that great either.
Kyo555 I love Fallout 3, but you are right. The thing that Fallout 3 got right was exploration, and the D.C setting was amazing. I love exploration the Capital Wasteland way more than the Mojave desert.
+Twerkduck I think it's got something to do with consistency and rate of video releases. Quality takes time though, especially when it comes to playing RPGs to completion. :)
It's also because he does a hefty amount of JRPG reviews. There's not much of an audience for JRPG review artists. Reasons why you see guys like Dunkey and Angry Joe get famous is because they do a lot of Triple A games and like to talk a lot of smack for the sake of comedy.

I'd like to give fallout 3 another shot, especially the dlc, after going back and playing the first 2 games. I was really let down by the lack of depth in bethesda's take on the series compared to the originals back then. Just felt hollow and shallow. I'm surprised you pushed through on the ps3 version, I had to give up and switch to pc pretty quickly
+viewtifuljoe99 if skip straight to New Vegas if I were you, and it's DLC packs. I have a suspicion they stuck a little more closely to the source material. Plus, hardcore mode, and the wild world perk. :)
Awesome Video Derek, loved it like the rest! I sadly have not played Fallout 3 (New Vegas too) as it is banned in my country ( India - on Steam anyway ) - But I saw the boxed copies on Amazon - will get one sometime. I have played the 1st, 2nd & 4th part though - the first two really do give you a good sense of character building. And 4th I liked for the music. I really like "Dear Hearts and Gentle People". Another great video!! I love the Fallout Series, I've been playing it since the original way back when. But I want to know how in the world did you make it through all of the DLC's!?!? Mine bugged out so badly that it would constantly freeze and I could only get through about half of the DLC's in Fallout 3 and don't get me started on New Vegas, that one I couldn't even beat cause of the crashes and bugs. So any tips to help me go back and finish my Fallout 3 experience?
Sadly I didn't make it through *all* of them, only some. I ended up encountering bugs and decided that I had captured enough gameplay. Sadly, the best recommendation I can make is to play on PC and use the patches made by the modding community to make it work better. :)

Tho Fallout 2 and New Vegas were better overall fallout games, Fallout 3 will remain my favorite in the fallout franchise. I just wonder of Bethesda wll ever regain this amount of love and craftsmanship again, but hey took Capcom awhile after RE5 and RE6 to find their way back to RE7 and RE2 Re-Master so I still have hope.... but after the watered down Meh Fallout 4 and the stillborn death of Fallout 76 no one wanted I truly worry I will not see a Fallout like this or new Vegas for 10 to 15+ years .... and sadly I am 47...lol. This game is great in opinion, I think it’s on par with New Vegas but in different ways. I absolutely love it’s atmospheric take on a ruined world, it’s so desolate. The gameplay works quite well too, I don’t think it controls perfectly but it’s good enough and I can see why they chose to make it the way it was, Fallout 3 feels clunky to play sometimes and your accuracy for shooting is determined heavily by stats, not just by your aim, so it feels a lot more like an RPG than 4. Personally though I prefer New Vegas controls though, it’s less clunky but it still has some aspects of that RPG style gameplay and being able to aim properly helps a lot, but stuff like VATS is still super useful. I really should finish 3 and maybe replay NV soon.

The Glitches in Fallout 3 though are notorious, my original PS3 copy I imported gave up one day, now I cannot play for 2 minutes without it crashing no matter what I do. I had to borrow my friends copy of the game when I went back for the platinum trophy!
The bugs got very frustrating. There was even one that forced me to restart an entire campaign and then there was New Vegas.....................Lol don't get me started on that one..............

Fallout 3 is such an amazingly unique game in that its karma system is like a digital social experiment. I have never been more invested in the choices I made in a game, or felt like the main role was truly a reflection of me. Much like the Spencer's Mansion, Termina, or Bionis/Mechonis I spent so much time in the Wasteland it feels like a real place I've visited. Most of the characters are well written and have lots of personality. I didn't even get around to playing it until about 5 years ago, but I'm glad I did! Great review!

Derek, as someone who's enjoyed many JRPG's and loved them for their gameplay and stories, but never been able to get into a single western RPG, after playing games like Baldur's Gate, Fallout New Vegas, Dragon Age Inquisition, Skyrim And Arcanum. What has made you enjoy Fallout 3 so much? And how do you rate it against your favorite JRPG's?
+Tartar generally I try not to rate the games against anything but their predecessors, but I think compared to other Bethesda titles, this would probably be better than Oblivion, but not quite as good as New Vegas. The freedom allotted in these games to do as one pleases, to wander around and stumble upon quests, and the ability to solve problems any number of ways, are things that draw me into these kinds of games. :)
Well, perhaps it was because I felt a certain pointlessness to the exploration and progression of Skyrim and New Vegas. That combined with characters that pale in comparison to any from the Final Fantasy Titles kinda turned me away from Fallout. I can definitely understand the appeal of exploration as a mechanic, it's the exact reason I liked Dark Souls and its expansive and immersive world. And the astounding amount of freedom given in Arcanum (imagine Fallout 2 in a Steam-punk world with magic), in how to tackle quests and roleplay was commendable despite me not liking the game. In either case, I think it's great that you enjoy these types of games, and can put hundreds of hours into them. I just guess that the appeals of Fallout are simply not things I look for in games.
SuperDerek RPGs dude GREAT video as usual. have you heard about people's Nintendo Switches bending and warping from getting too hot and how do you feel about it. I'm hopeful it's not every Switch but that seems like a serious issue. especially for $300 bucks. thanks for listening.
I know this kind of baremy counts as a rpg but there are choice elements and world changing consequences in it like a rpg, but have you considered mass effect? I HIGHLY recommend at least playing the first one, and seeing if its suits your taste
Game of the year edition will work for you if you like wandering around lost, and never changing weapons because the game even turns that into a chore.

Really hope you do Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4 as both titles are 50x better then the POS Fallout 76 and you seem the type to really get into each title. This was a very fun review and I thank you for all the time this took :).
I think I have a love/hate relationship with Fallout 3. The setting and general atmosphere of the game is incredible, but I've always found the combat and main quest line to be, as you say, underwhelming. Still certainly a game worth playing, but if I ever revisit it I will almost certainly be playing on PC. I only just now realized this video posted over a week ago. Been so busy at work, haven't had much time for anything video game related. I noticed you were streaming Persona 5 the other day...I've had to steer clear of half of the internet to avoid spoilers. I've got my copy sitting here, but probably won't find the time to play it until my contract is up. I hope you're enjoying the hell out of it!!

When I saw the PS3 case, I immediately felt a bit of sympathy. Because for some reason, out of all of the versions of Bethesda games, the playstation ports tend to have far more problems. The issue you mentioned occurring with saves happened with New Vegas and Skyrim from what I remember, and from reading the wiki, the bugs each version has tends to be different, and often I would see the ps3 version have less of the kind of bug that might cause problems with quests, but far more problems of performance, such as freezing, or such. I had my share of those problems when I played it on the ps3 years ago, and a couple years back, my nephew wanted to play it and a crash with the game actually corrupted files on the hard drive. I ended up having to format and reinstall everything, And I got a bit of nstalgia when seeing the way the vanilla version looks, but now a days if I play the game it's with mods. I really didn't like the look the game has and tend to use one makes the world look a lot more alive.
Mods definitely make the difference. I just wish I had the self control to play the game on PC without cheating with the console commands these days! xD
A bit late to the party but: "The series' first foray into console gaming" It's actually the 2nd, and would have been the 3rd had Interplay not canned a bunch of their projects while they were in the process of becoming the IP-clutching husk they are today. Granted, the first title (which came out on PS2 and the original Xbox) was a steaming pile that was intended to be Fallout's equivalent of Dark Alliance, AFAIK. Everyone pretends it doesn't exist though, so I don't really blame you for not mentioning it

Invisible walls? Except for the edges of the map, and a few sections around the city which are mostly blocked by garbage anyway, I don't remember any invisible walls in FO3. They were definitely there in NV which was disappointing. That game sucked.
god tier jrpg's in my book. i know that everyone likes persona more..and i can't argue that they aren't well made,....but count me in the camp that likes SMT more. It could be argued that SMT:DDS shouldnt be counted among the core series but i do...Both SMT's on the Snes and strange journey on the DS were epic as well...i would say strange journey is god tier as well..but has a few SERIOUS flaws that bring it down a notch...still a great game IMHO
I agree, I loved DDS 1 and 2 as well as Nocturn. I have bought and tried persona 3 before any others and personally, it's not my game. I can see the appeal from it but i found these games had a better story/gameplay to grab you.

I bought it for PS3 for a few reasons. First, I don't have a PC capable of running the game while recording gameplay. Second, I have terrible self control in Bethesda games, and always ended up chatting with the console commands. Third, I chose PS3 because of my general distaste for Xbox consoles. Last, I wanted to review the game as it was released on comparable hardware at the time, rather than a modded version on a modern PC that might hide poor optimization issues. I love playing the games on PC, but I opted for PS3 for a variety of valid reasons. I'm glad you still enjoyed the video though. :)

I don't think you're alone. The game does have flaws, and if the things that I find fun, (meandering exploration, stealth elements, multiple ways to solve quests,) don't interest you, then the game may not have much to offer. I would probably say that the Halo games are legitimately bad, even though I'd be squarely in the minority. Some games just aren't for some people, and there's nothing wrong with that. :)
I mean, those are all things I enjoy. I just feel like it controls poorly, the world itself is almost as bland as Oblivion,the AI is terrible, and these things being most of what the experience is, especially the former, makes it feel like it's fighting me while I'm just trying to enjoy it. I kind of wish Obsidian had just been given the license.
+The Badcompany Gaming there's a good reason we differentiate between the genres. It just so happens that I have the kind of mindset that allows both genres to appeal to me. But clearly I lean a little hard toward JRPGs. :)

RPG Tour Guide the ones I recommend to start with is fallout 4 or new Vegas. 4 is a bit more beginner friendly lore wise and gameplay wise

I bought Fallout 3 several times. Vanilla on the PS3, GOTY on PS3, and then GOTY on PC. It's an amazing game!

Like you Derek I would recommend to play this on P.C as most bugs will be fixed but also their are some really excellent mod filters as well.

Well, perhaps it was because I felt a certain pointlessness to the exploration and progression of Skyrim and New Vegas. That combined with characters that pale in comparison to any from the Final Fantasy Titles kinda turned me away from Fallout.
I can definitely understand the appeal of exploration as a mechanic, it's the exact reason I liked Dark Souls and its expansive and immersive world. And the astounding amount of freedom given in Arcanum (imagine Fallout 2 in a Steam-punk world with magic), in how to tackle quests and roleplay was commendable despite me not liking the game.
In either case, I think it's great that you enjoy these types of games, and can put hundreds of hours into them. I just guess that the appeals of Fallout are simply not things I look for in games.

I know this kind of baremy counts as a rpg but there are choice elements and world changing consequences in it like a rpg, but have you considered mass effect? I HIGHLY recommend at least playing the first one, and seeing if its suits your taste

Game of the year edition will work for you if you like wandering around lost, and never changing weapons because the game even turns that into a chore.

Really hope you do Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4 as both titles are 50x better then the POS Fallout 76 and you seem the type to really get into each title. This was a very fun review and I thank you for all the time this took :).

I think I have a love/hate relationship with Fallout 3. The setting and general atmosphere of the game is incredible, but I've always found the combat and main quest line to be, as you say, underwhelming. Still certainly a game worth playing, but if I ever revisit it I will almost certainly be playing on PC.

Going to get started on the GOTY edition on my Xbox One. I beat the game once way back when the game was fairly new but played it as a good guy. Now it's time to straight be evil and beat all the DLC

Yeah, I was speaking about mainline entries but I probably could have said so with a bit more nuance. Though maybe I should pick up Brotherhood of Steel sometime to give it a shot. :)
When I saw the PS3 case, I immediately felt a bit of sympathy. Because for some reason, out of all of the versions of Bethesda games, the playstation ports tend to have far more problems. The issue you mentioned occurring with saves happened with New Vegas and Skyrim from what I remember, and from reading the wiki, the bugs each version has tends to be different, and often I would see the ps3 version have less of the kind of bug that might cause problems with quests, but far more problems of performance, such as freezing, or such. I had my share of those problems when I played it on the ps3 years ago, and a couple years back, my nephew wanted to play it and a crash with the game actually corrupted files on the hard drive. I ended up having to format and reinstall everything, And I got a bit of nstalgia when seeing the way the vanilla version looks, but now a days if I play the game it's with mods. I really didn't like the look the game has and tend to use one makes the world look a lot more alive.
Mods definitely make the difference. I just wish I had the self control to play the game on PC without cheating with the console commands these days! xD

Fallout 3 is a solid game without mods and a awesome one with good mod list.
My favorite part of fallout 3 was the one black and white dream world place (forget it's name).
That part is so good nothing else in fallout 3 tops it
Tranquility Lane is my major highlight of this game, too.

It's actually the 2nd, and would have been the 3rd had Interplay not canned a bunch of their projects while they were in the process of becoming the IP-clutching husk they are today.
Granted, the first title (which came out on PS2 and the original Xbox) was a steaming pile that was intended to be Fallout's equivalent of Dark Alliance, AFAIK.

Invisible walls? Except for the edges of the map, and a few sections around the city which are mostly blocked by garbage anyway, I don't remember any invisible walls in FO3. They were definitely there in NV which was disappointing. That game sucked.
This so needs a remaster..... so I can remember when Fallout did not get ruined by Bethesda.

god tier jrpg's in my book. i know that everyone likes persona more..and i can't argue that they aren't well made,....but count me in the camp that likes SMT more. It could be argued that SMT:DDS shouldnt be counted among the core series but i do...Both SMT's on the Snes and strange journey on the DS were epic as well...i would say strange journey is god tier as well..but has a few SERIOUS flaws that bring it down a notch...still a great game IMHO
I agree, I loved DDS 1 and 2 as well as Nocturn. I have bought and tried persona 3 before any others and personally, it's not my game. I can see the appeal from it but i found these games had a better story/gameplay to grab you.

I bought it for PS3 for a few reasons. First, I don't have a PC capable of running the game while recording gameplay. Second, I have terrible self control in Bethesda games, and always ended up chatting with the console commands. Third, I chose PS3 because of my general distaste for Xbox consoles. Last, I wanted to review the game as it was released on comparable hardware at the time, rather than a modded version on a modern PC that might hide poor optimization issues.
I love playing the games on PC, but I opted for PS3 for a variety of valid reasons. I'm glad you still enjoyed the video though. :)

I don't think you're alone. The game does have flaws, and if the things that I find fun, (meandering exploration, stealth elements, multiple ways to solve quests,) don't interest you, then the game may not have much to offer. I would probably say that the Halo games are legitimately bad, even though I'd be squarely in the minority. Some games just aren't for some people, and there's nothing wrong with that. :)
I mean, those are all things I enjoy. I just feel like it controls poorly, the world itself is almost as bland as Oblivion,the AI is terrible, and these things being most of what the experience is, especially the former, makes it feel like it's fighting me while I'm just trying to enjoy it. I kind of wish Obsidian had just been given the license.
CoolNameGuy I like fallout 3; because, the story was engaging and visuals actually contributed to a style of loneliness and desolation.

I hate 3 mostly because I came from fallout 2 and it fell flat on its face in every way
the ps3 was ALWAYS the worst platform for multiplats 360 and pc don't have the notorious slowdown that the ps3 was known for with bethesda titles
Tonkinese Because Bethesda couldn't program for the cell processor for shit. Had they handed the PS3 version over to a developer with experience developing for that console, it'd be fine.
