- Which SaGa game is the best for a newcomer to start with?
The SaGa series is a long-running franchise of open-ended, player-focused RPGs developed by Square-Enix, but with 25 “main” titles in the series to choose from-and soon a 26th with Emerald Beyond-jumping into these games might seem a bit daunting.
Luckily, Joie has you covered. After years of experience, tons of research, and a brief replay of most of the games in the series, he’s ready to give you some solid options to start with, as well as some tips for your journey!
We swear this isn't just 27 minutes of telling you to play SaGa Frontier Remastered.
This is part 3/3 of the SaGa Newcomer's Primer and Series Digest series: these videos can be watched in any order, so choose what seems right to you.
Part 1 is a brief showcase and overview of all 26 games in the series. • SaGa Showcase: A Brief...
Part 2 (FORTHCOMING) will cover the shared mechanics of the series as well as a brief historical deep-dive about its production.
Thanks so much for watching-we hope you stick around and see what’s to come!
Graphics by Joie and Antonio. Big thanks to Baz and the folks over at the SaGa wiki discord for notes and for contributing footage of the now-defunct live service games!

Just chiming in to let you know that I'm eagerly awaiting part 2
It took awhile for SaGa to click for me but when it did, the remaster of Minstrel Song was it! I look how deeply free the game is. It's filled with neat scenarios that make it really feel like a tabletop RPG campaign. Which makes sense when you understand the creators inspirations.
Minstrel Song is so unbelievably good! It's probably the most DragonLance of all the SaGa games, too, so I get the tabletop RPG comparisons.
It took a lot of deliberation not to put it equally as high as the other titles here; you're proof positive that once that game clicks, it sticks.
Fully agree with your picks for best to start with, and those are exactly my three favorite games in the series. I would also advise against anyone starting with Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song Remastered, I find it to be the absolute hardest game in the series specially in the early game of a first playthrough. I'm three playthroughs deep into it and I still haven't fully mastered its systems or done every quest. Wouldn't start with Romancing SaGa 2 either.
SaGa Frontier has a fun sci-fantasy setting, fun characters, and it's a great introduction. RS3 is more involved and more of a time commitment, but it is fantastic. Scarlet Grace i would argue has the best combat system in the entire series.
I'm a huge fan of the series and I also really appreciate the comment about the gatekeeping phenomenon some "fans" exhibit when bringing up the remaster features. I'm all for welcoming new people into SaGa fandom and letting them decide for themselves how to play the games. SaGa is about player choice and freedom after all.
The last sentence of your post REALLY hits-thanks for sharing! I don't think SaGa fans have been too bad about the gatekeeping stuff (especially in relation to other fandoms), but I figured it was worth the rant anyway haha.
And Minstrel Song took a while to really click for me too-I even played it after finishing the SFC version and after I was like 7 SaGa games deep. But when it did? Oh man, it really hit. The complexity of that game can be really alluring, and for those who really do want that out of the gate, but as a general, all-purpose recommendation, its being on this main list was certainly a deliberation.
Why do you think MS is the hardest? I honestly thought it was much easier than RS2 and SF2
Love to see new CS content!!
The New Game plus feature is such a game changer in the remasters. The game loves to put new players to the series in situations they can't get out of. It really needs this option to avoid having to restart completely from scratch over and over.
It also love points of no returns. So this helps with that as well.
Part 3? What about Part 2?
I had some technical issues with part 2, and part 3 was finished, so I figured putting them up out of order was better than delaying it. Sorry if this was confusing!
@@ceruleanskiesTM respectable. I was happy to receive some Saga Goodness regardless
@@GentlemenofAction thanks for your patience! I swear it'll be worth it-there's a joke about bullying Kawazu in it, hope it lands
part 3 without 2...THATS SO SaGa right!
Lol I was figuring 2 got struck, glad it's just a case of putting up out of order
I would like the meet a person who started with Unlimited and became a SaGa fan because of that someday.
It was my second game, it counts?
Re universe has been my main mobile game sense it released. Love the saga series. Love this video
Appreciate it very much, dude! Thank you!
And yeahhhh I've been grinding Re;univerSe like mad lately. It's the prettiest mobile game I've ever played, too
Gold trick spoted 😆
Lmao I've only ever done it on the PS1 version, it's for the content
another part, let fucking goooo!
Great content as always
thanks so much! makes me really happy you caught it so quickly!
Honestly I've enjoyed enough of the SaGa games I've played, but never really stuck it out and beat one, never got the proper 'click'! I have most of the remasters, so I think that 2024 I'm going to try and put in the effort to beat at least 1-2 of them! Really enjoying your content, found you through the SaGa videos and they definitely had me subscribing. I somehow missed the Emerald Beyond announcement and finding out about it on your videos is what's kickstarted my desire to give the series another shot to try and see if I can find the one that helps it click :)
That is so awesome to hear, thank you!
Out of the games you've played thus far, which one has stuck out the most?
@@ceruleanskiesTM I've mainly just gotten to try out the PS1 & PS2 SaGa games! SaGa Frontier 1 mostly, and a little bit of Unlimited SaGa and SaGa Frontier 2. I got the Romancing SaGa 2 & 3 Remasters as well as the SaGa Scarlet Grace Ambitions on Switch a while back, as well as the SaGa Frontier remaster on Switch too! So I figured I'd start with one of the ones I got on there since they're most convenient. :)
Are you doing a SaGa thing by releasing part 3 before part 2. 😅
Lmao unintentionally yes
LMAO
Was SaGa 3 released before SaGa 2?
Thanks for telling me I’m unique, Joie
You matter!
I think starting with Riki is turning me off from starting Saga Frontier. I do like that small twist with one of the starting characters you meet as Riki. It makes the story interesting.
Riki can be one of the tougher characters to start with, so i totally get that. he has a pretty tough endgame if you're not really comfortable with the systems, too. but the nice thing is how easily you can swap if you aren't feeling it.
What, no mention of Unlimited SaGa for a first game?
Also, SaGa Frontier was my first.
I honestly love Unlimited SaGa! But we didn't get the capital G in the US, so it's now officially a completely different series /s
we all know unlimited SaGa is the hardest to get into. it's like romancing but with more convoluted "lynchian" SaGa....the inland empire if you will....lets start people with moholland drive (frontier) before doing twin peaks )romancing.
@@rpghero46 yeah it was said as a joke. No one would ever suggest unlimited saga as someone's first saga game
@rpghero46 love that you've continued the Lynch analogy haha.
FWIW, i cannot STAND inland empire, yet I love everything else Lynch has made. Not sure how if there's a throughline for me, though; I ended up enjoying USaGa much more over the past couple years, but it's still a game I appreciate far more than I enjoy playing. It's such a deep, rewarding game once the subsystems become clear
@@evilblanketfish I figured I just love the lynch SaGa analogy Cerulian sky came up to.
Why was part two skipped?
brother you doing a good work we need more saga content. plus ...you look kinda hot and hot youtubers talking about saga is a sparkling on itself.
