I played through Dark Souls recently and god did it feel good to beat it. It was challenging to be sure but it never felt impossible and 95% of the challenges felt fair and if I fucked up it was my own fault. I love this game, its so good.
+CluelessDetective And the other 5% was probably that narrow path leading up to the silver knight archers in Anor Londo I bet, huh? That place killed me. I mean, more than usual. :)

Really great, in depth review. I can see why this one took a while to gestate.
Also I love the back stab Spartan kick combo you performed on Hapa. It was the perfect marrying of your greatest skills.
Actually that was another actual invader from my actual playthrough. Guy ended up killing me in the end with an electric crossbow a little later. Shame I couldn't keep the combo going longer. :-)

Really nice review! I think you really captured the feel of this game. Just an amazing series of games altogether.
Demon's Souls was the first game I played in the series. Encountering Tower Knight for the first time was one of my favorite moments in gaming. When you have a chance, play through that one too!

I really need to get myself a PS4, now that games I want are actually starting to come out on it. I've only seen the first trailer, and haven't been following any of the news or press releases for it though. Pretty much trying to stay spoiler-free, but who knows how long that'll last. :)

Ah, Dark Souls. This is definitely a series that I want to get into in the near future. I'm not sure if I will start with this game, or Demon's Souls. Have you played through Demon's Souls? You know, I never thought of this as a spiritual successor to the King's Field games, but now that you mention it, I can see that. Great review! Always enjoy the videos with you and Jimmy teaming up... or maybe not teaming up so much, in this case. :P
Thanks +RPGtourguide! It's definitely a series worth getting into, for sure! I haven't had a chance to get my hands on a copy of Demon's Souls though, everytime I see it, someone's trying to get $30 for it, but it seems more like a $5-10 game. Someday though, It'll be mine. :)

I just had PTSD when I heard the Gwyn music play at the end. One of my absolute favorite climaxes to a game ever.

Great review. I put a lot of time into beating Demon's Souls years ago but can't seem to get into Bloodborne. Maybe I'll try out Dark Souls 2 or maybe 3 when that comes out.
Awesome review of an awesome game. I recall a few hours in I felt it was too difficult and eventually gave up. I eventually decided to give it another shot with a bit more patience due to all the praise the game gets. 132 hours of playtime later I had finished 3 playthrus and got all the trophies. One of my most satisfying accomplishments in the whole of gaming. Now it remains as one of my favorite games of all time. A true masterpiece.

SuperDerek RPGs Quite a lot I presume. I have noticed some people have suggested the game should include an easier difficulty or something so more people could experience the game. But, I disagree. Like you noted in the review almost all deaths are your own fault and I agree. Part of the magic of the game was the intensity and tension and getting past tough areas to see more of what the game offers. If one could just waltz through the game I feel it would lose a lot of what makes it such a great game.
Picked up the game recently ($5) I should say stole it lol. Actually bought because everyone said it was hard. It has not disappointed. haven't made it very far from firelink shrine yet. been grinding untill I can survive the first graveyard area. Finally a game that doesn't hold your hand. Remindes me of 1st Gen gaming when your skill mattered not just how fast u can push a button.

It was one hell of a game and very hard but with patients it can be done so many skilled players across the world where there are so many speedruns on the game

+yinyang Oh, the intro bumper is for Multitapped, a group of TH-cam friends and I. Sort of like Retroware, Normalboots, and Finalbosses. We've got a site that we all post to, do collaborations with each-other, (like this one ;) ) and generally pal around with. Side-note, I actually made that intro. :)
those death mechanics are super common in the H&SARPG genre
Speaking of hack-and-slash games, have you thought of taking a look at the Musou (Warriors) Franchise? Some of the best hack-and-slash games can be found there, like Dynasty Warriors 3 and Samurai Warriors 2!

I've played that game and picked Deprived as my starting class as I wanted kind of a challenge... I've been stuck to that spider boss for ages...

I have recently gotten intersted in dark souls, this is a great game series, one despite it's diffculty i will Always treasure, i tried it once on Xbox 360 at a friend's house, it wasn't until a few years later i started to like the series, i love the game series now and i am happy to praise the sun on ps4, i hope i can prevent Solaire from dying beacuse he seems like a great friend to have on your journey.

I find it funny how no one mentions how melee attacks home in on you even after you dodged them
+Harley Co I found that was more of an issue in Dark Souls 2 than Dark Souls 1, in my experience.
I LOVE Dark Souls. I've been working on playing through Demon's Souls and I've also been playing a bit of Dark Souls 1 and 2 to get ready for Dark Souls 3. Anyways great review.

Fantastic review! I've never been able to get into Dark/Demon Souls. I'm a big wuss and they are too brutal for me. I was wondering if you were thinking about reviewing Xenogears for the PS1? It's my favorite RPG :)
+Jake Kristof Yeah! I plan on reviewing the "Xeno" series in a marathon eventually, just gotta get my hands on a copy of Xenosaga III and it's a go. I know they're only loosely connected, spiritually, but I'd still like to do them in that order. :)
I am curious about if these are games I would enjoy. Maybe I'll pick up Bloodborne, since I don't have a PS3 anymore. Not sure if my blood pressure will be able to handle it, but I'll consider giving it a shot.
+Ryan Driscoll Best of luck to you! I haven't seen a ton of Bloodborn, but from what I hear it's a bit more of a quick and aggressive game than the Souls series. You might just wait a month or so until DS3 is released. That said, I hear Bloodborn is also amazing, and there's no reason to pass that up! :)

Ps3 player here. no internet either. Other than help with bosses am I really missing out playing off-line? Is invading the best way to get humanity?
I didn't care for invading much, but I liked being summoned to help other people with the boss battles, and got more than enough humanity that way. This was a while ago though, you might be better off playing a different release at this point, sorry to say.
@@SuperDerek three kids I play what I can get may skip PS4 and go straight to ps5 if they actually do backwards compatibly the way they should. Been PlayStation since the beginning would love to pull 10-20-30 year old games out of the closet and relive past days of glory.
I have the first game for ps3 and the other two for ps4, i liked it better on console in my opinion but that's just my opinion, i never regret buying any of them, i am now a happy souls fan.

dark souls 1 is my fav game of all time, absolutely sucked me in from the very beginning! I sucked at first with Demon souls but the combat was really satisfying, and when dark souls 1 came out I thought it was a big improvement on how the world connected beautifully, and how a bonfire was a sign of hope and relief from your adventure. overall masterpiece, and im hoping dark souls 3 carries the trend of dark souls 1 more than dark souls 2. the enfing credits song is also beautiful, and puts a tear to my eye lol

+PheseantNetsuke Yes, a long time ago, around when it came out I played it and hated it. Then about 5 years ago I tried it again, and thought it was just "ok" but I never beat it. Maybe next time I play it I'll enjoy it, who knows? But as of right now, whenever I talk about my gripes with FFXII, it tends to get some people really riled up. I think it'll be fun to review at some point, but I think I've got 10 or 11 FF games to tackle before I do that. ;)

Very nice. I loved this game, but I really didn't like the multiplayer stuff. The hints are cool, but the first time I summoned someone to help me with a boss they just silently ran ahead and slaughtered him before I even got there. That made the boss fight pretty anticlimatic and cheap for me. Not long after that I got invaded and 1 shot. Those experiences left a bad taste in my mouth, so from then on I just played the rest of the game hollow so I wouldn't be bothered by anyone.
+jidar Sorry to hear you had a tough time of it. Some people do a bit of min/maxing for PVP builds, which is fine, but on PC and Xbox, some people outright hack game saves to stack stats where they don't belong. It can be a real problem in the beginning of the game. But as you progress it becomes less of an issue, I've found. That guy I was kicking around and back-stabbing in the review was wearing end-game gear, while I was around level 10, for instance. He invaded me while he was apparently doing a low-level run, which is rather unsportsmanlike, but that's their prerogative, I suppose.
The Souls series are all great games but frustratingly difficult... I must be a masochist cause I keep buying and playing them even though I've never finished any of them.
+Cesar “Isaac” Perez They really, really can be. The ability to summon white phantoms though can really help you through some tougher points, like the fight against Ornstein & Smough, for instance. But I think the biggest hurdle is just finding a build that works for your playstyle. Which can take quite a bit of trial and error. Best of luck to you on DS3 when it comes out! :)

Can't wait! Glad Miyazaki is back on for this one, DS2 was an unbalanced linear mess, at least when compared to the other games in the series.
It was still hard and fun...
+Majesty ZX I had some gripes about DS2 as well. But maybe I'll talk about those some other time. But when it comes to DS3, my interest is definitely piqued. Can't wait until I can afford a PS4, I have a feeling I'd be getting a lot of use out of it over the next several years.
SuperDerek RPGs Worth it!
+Cesar “Isaac” Perez When they have a "death count" for enemies to disappear permanently from the world, they knew that a lot of stuff they placed in the game was UNFAIR, which isn't in any of the other souls games or Bloodborne.
Those games are very Fair with their rules and enemy placement , but DS2 was just hard for the sake of being hard, which isn't what the Souls series is about.
It (DS2) feels like a Mario romhack that doesn't have good level design, it's just hard because it lacks good level design.
I am sadly a filthy casual so these games are not for me :(

Idk if I have watched this one before, haha, but I enjoyed the video, Derek.
I guess I am one of the few people who think the story in Dark Souls is absolute garbage. Needlessly overwritten, complex, and self-indulgent in ways only matched by Tolkien himself. The one good thing about it is that it is absent unless you go looking for it, though this leaves the world rather empty and, no pun intended, hollow. I would have preferred a more basic story that was actually explained somewhat. Granted, I haven't played in about 9 months and I have yet to beat the game so perhaps my opinion will change. Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of people love the story and can talk passionately for hours about it, but it just isn't my style of storytelling.
Unfortunately I am limited to the 360 version and don't pay for online so missed out on all of the online content. I suppose I am playing a different game than most people have.
