Persona 2 Eternal Punishment isn't just a clever name. I'll start off this review by first warning you, dear viewer, that this game is not for the faint of heart. It requires dedication, endurance, and for me, about 87 hours give or take. Unlike the unrestrained raving hype train behind the likes of Personas 3 and 4, the hype behind Eternal Punishment is more of a calm, tempered enthusiasm that's hard not to fall for. But is it warranted?

This isn't mentioned anywhere in the comments, but, in the Playstation release, during certain parts in the story, the controller vibrates like a beating heart if you have the vibration on. It's a neat thing, yet, creepy in a sense.
That probably happens when a persona-user boss is close
oh man I just finished this game yesterday but played it on my PC via emulation and didnt experience it, but it makes sense as there are parts where you can listen to a heart when you are close to persona user bosses

Super Derek I concur. Your reviews show a great passion and in depth knowledge for each and every game you review. You actually play the games to completion and nothing is half assed. You don't just play the game for a few hours and then write a shitty 3 minute review. 87 hours shows the dedication.
Also like the fact that you don't use some number based rating system. I think it is always better to listen to what the reviewer has to say and base your own decision on that, instead of seeing some score and write off the game based on some arbitrary number.
The main problem with P2 is that it costs an arm, a leg, and at least 5 more legs to get physically.
I *really* appreciate how hard you avoid spoilers in your reviews. It’s why I trust yours to be safe to watch and won’t watch others.

I completed this back in the day during Xenogears, Final Fantasy 9, Wild Arms times. Persona 2 had such a big impression on me. I loved it. You are right about the hours, put in 100+ myself. What a game.
I know this is late, but telling people that Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment can be played separately and are essentially their own games, that's not good at all. Eternal Punishment is a direct sequel to Innocent Sin, and even though it's a new timeline because of ending stuff it very much NEEDS you to play Innocent Sin. Playing Eternal Punishment without any knowledge from Innocent Sin or having played it yourself is the best way to make sure you have a horrible experience with the story and characters. Outside of that though I agree with the rest and great video!
i was thinking about getting eternal punishment on the ps3 store since i already bought p3 fes and p4 on there, but you're telling me it's basically half a game and not worth it if i can't play both?

Persona 2 eternal punishment is still my fav persona game and is the best IMO.

I just finished my last game of the persona series the order in which I played the series in is a mess but i went from P5 to P1 to P4 to P2 and finally P3 and I’ve gotta say P2 has the best characters and tracks in the series by far. gameplay wise it’s rather mediocre but understandably ofc I don’t blame the game i just blame the 90s

Musomania27 I remember that, I was just seeing if anyone remembered he existed. I'm guessing you know the joke about newer persona fans not knowing there was P1, P2:IS, and P2:EP, so they joke and say the series starts with 3? Me neither.
i know of that joke and it pisses me off. I say this as someone who was introduced to persona through 4 too

I have to agree about Katsuya though, he does seem two dimensional in a 3 dimensional world though, but, I've noticed that Katsuya seems to let his guard down around Maya all the time. It's a shame that this type of relationship never blossomed between Katsuya and Maya, because I personally feel that they compliment each other, in their own special way. I still would love to see these two (Katsuya and Maya) get together, or at least, give Katsuya a chance to tell Maya how he felt about her, but obviously, by the end of the game in Monada (the truth came out). But I'm still rooting for Katsuya though!! And, also, by the way Katsuya acts, he seems so reserved, but he hides his emotions, what is he hiding, under those beautiful eyes of his, it makes me sad, that he falls in love, and the one person he loves doesn't want anything to do with him, because of Tatsuya! (even though, I can understand that though, but still....I want Katsuya and Maya together!!!

It kills me that we didn't get the updated version of EP. Was it just because the PSP lost it's support to push the Vita? I don't know but it makes me really sad. I hear there's a fan translation in the works though, but eh.

I have a feeling it was related to licensing for the music or something. Atlus had fully intended to bring it to the US but then had to back out from what I've read. I mean, Persona 4 was released on the PS2 well after the PS3 had launched, so I don't think Atlus would cancel a release just because of the new PS Vita,

I am! I was using that as an alias just because I didn't want my name in youtube comments, but I figured that was just silly. Ya caught me!
I think it had more to do with the fact it bombed in Japan, as it sold only 28,000 copies in its first week. Granted, Eternal Punishment in general is the worst selling main series Persona game in Japan, though it could have been due to bad timing on both releases. The PS1 version was released in June 2000 in Japan, just under 4 months after the release of the PS2 in the same region and the PSP version came out in May 2012, half a year after the Vita came out and well over a year after the 3DS came out.
@@GiordanDiodato It was also partially due to the PSP versions of P1 and P2IS not selling as well as the originals, due to their many unnecessary changes. While P2EP PSP did fix those issues, the damage had already been done.
Still loving the P4 styled dialog windows on your persona reviews so dope
Katsuya is pretty lacking in terms of development, but his retreat line "Next time, I WILL arrest you!" is still one of the funniest things from the PSX.

Got a PS3, Vita, PSP or PS4?
If so, I hear you can create a PlayStation account at the US PlayStation website, use an address within the United States. You should be able to use that account to buy from the PlayStation store. Once the software is downloaded and installed, you can switch users to your regular account and play as normal. It sucks that you've gotta jump through hoops, but that is one method for playing it "legitimately". I don't even think you need to use a VPN or anything, but I could be wrong.
But one more thing, I do love Persona 2 - Eternal Punishment though

Super Derek not too far, I'm about 10 hours in the 3rd "dungeon" I think that I added time by reading extra hilarious dialog for the characters in shops and different locations.
Another great review man. When the first game for the PSX came out, I watched my roommate complete it and have never went back to beat it myself. Looks like I need to add 3 or 4 more games to my bucket list hehe.
No one talks about this, but in certain points I’m more than positive some of the censorship of cuss words were for comedic purposes, like the scene with elly where she goes back and forth with the stalker and it’s a whole conversation that’s entirely censored

Derek, I just want to say that I really enjoy your videos and the classic RPGs you review. It's nice to see such enthusiasm being put forth for what could be called the best generation of RPGs ever made. However, I must ask why have you stopped appearing in your videos? Just my opinion, but I enjoy seeing the host, as I feel it adds a nice personal touch to the review. I still love what you do and the games you review and I always look forward to your next video.
If I may make a recommendation for your next review? Perhaps Grandia II for the Dreamcast or Final Fantasy Tactics? Keep up the great work!! :)

Made me pick up my copy of Innocent Sin again... Was floored to see I was only 20hrs in... Felt like a whirlwind ride already.... Really need to stop and focus on one RPG at a time.. In the middle of like 4 at the moment :S

i can't jump back into a game after not playing it for months, i always have to start over again from the beginning. i played like 20-30 hours of p3 fes and then decided to try out p4 and got hooked on it, played it all the way through. now i have to start over in fes again. i just bought both on the ps3 store and never played either so i wanted to try out both. it's really disappointing they didn't add control of all party members in fes, instead of it taking them 2 rereleases to figure out what a drastic improvement that would be.
Great look at Persona 2... part 2, I guess. :P I have not played this game yet, so I appreciate the spoiler-free approach. I definitely want to play it myself. It is a shame that the price is as steep as it is. And an even bigger shame that we never got the PSP remake for it. I'll have to keep my eye out for that fan translation. Thanks RPGtourguide, I'm keeping my eye out for that fan translation, I think it'll be the definitive way to experience Eternal Punishment. And maybe pick up the digital copy to throw Atlus a few bones for their good work. :)
Super Derek I didn't even think about it in terms of Atlus getting money for buying the game digitally. Shame on me I suppose. :P I greatly prefer getting games in physical format, but with pricey ones like this, I'm not completely opposed to the digital versions. That's how I play Earthbound currently on my Wii U. Thanks for that bit of advice.
I just finished my first Persona game which is the PSP Persona 1 remake/port and it got me hooked in the series immediately. Even though I had a 50hrs of gameplay and got the bad ending. LMAO. I will definitely play it again soon, then move to P2 and but the time comes I hope the fan translation is made if not then i just go with PSone version.

Hey Derek, I beat this game just yesterday night after putting more than 100 hours into it, and even then I didnt unlock everything...this is such a GREAT game, they definitely dont makes games like they used to, this is a classic RPG experience from the Playstation, I REALLY liked this game, uncensored, blunt, philosophical, dark and overall really interesting, its actually my very first Persona game, and the only reason I played it was to play P3 with at least some kind of context of the game, but man I got hooked like in the old days...and its soundtrack is AWESOME as well as the sprites work (Nothing beats Breath of Fire sprite work though), seriously, they dont make games like this anymore

Super Derek I highly recommend if you do play them, be sure to play it back to back. They might as well be one game =p. And yeah, they are great. Im really excited to see somebody actually reviewed the first Breath of Fire. That game is incredible.

My first foray into Shin Megami Tensei. I got the game back around when it came out and simply could not get into the combat system. Fast forward many years later Persona 3 resparked my interest. Had a great time with this one and was so satisfying to finish. Now Innocent Sin still sits in my PSP backlog. I should make a point to play it soon. Great review.
Katsuya being bland was nothing compared to the utter destruction of Maya's character (thanks, the need of silent protagonists!)...

I couldn't agree more. This is one instance where having a mute protagonist made absolutely no sense, especially if you played through Innocent Sin first. Having played Eternal Punishment when it first came out in 1999, the only things I could decipher about her character was that she was an optimist and a total slob. I had to watch an Innocent Sin playthrough many years later to find out she was a bit of a goofball, too.
I agree. I don't mind silent protagonists but if they're gonna make a character who was fun and cheerful in a previous game, be completely silent for the sake of "silent-protagonist" in the sequel then i'd rather them make a new character and let that be the protagonist.
I agree that a silent protagonist is a bit boring. However, so many games in the Shin Megami Tensei universe have a silent protagonist. It really makes you feel like the main character rather than feeling a vibe with the main character. Also, the shift in narrative moves with the story between Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment.

Absolutely. That's my biggest issue with the game. Maya was very charming in Innocent Sin, and Tatsuya was a lot more interesting in Eternal Punishment. When they are silenced in their respective games they seem to lose a lot of their character. I don't understand the appeal of silent protagonists at all.

Games which carry lore over from previous titles are some of my favorite. That's cool they did that here too. It shows a lot of love to the fans. LOL, sorry the bleeping of the swearing is a joke! That would be amazing. I just hope they don't shoe-horn a life sim system into the game just to appeal to fans of Persona 3-5.
gamerprince1999 They most likely will have it, Persona after 1-2 has changed and the Social Link system has become integral to the themes and motifs of the modern Persona games. So them getting rid of it just for a remake/reboot is very doubtful.

I just tried P2 EP out, and ouch. I might have to come back to this one. The order I played the series so far has been 5, 3 FES, then 4. So yeah, this feels a bit janky.
Damn I wish this game still sold for $70 now it is $150+ for a decent CIB copy on Ebay.

How I want a PSP remake with translation... I'm a huge fan of Persona series, especially love dark atmosphere, and plot P2. I have 2/3/4 on vita but EP really need version like a IS - it's more friendly for players which could be annoyed with slow animations. Btw, I finish this game at the same time as you! :D(the difference in minutes)
Weird how PSP Innocent Sin was actually worse than PS1 in terms of QOL.
Good video. Even though you said the difficulty is only above average, I'm actually curious: how would you compare it to other SMT/Persona games?
Elochai I have't yet played mainline SMT games yet, so unfortunately I have nothing to compare it to there. Compared with other Persona titles, this is definitely the grindiest one, with Innocent Sin in second place. Persona 1 would probably be in 2nd place if the guns weren't so effective. And I honestly don't recall P3 or P4 being particularly hard, but it's been a long time, and I haven't beaten either title yet.

great review! I beat innocent sin a few weeks ago on my vita, but unfortunately, Eternal punishment was never released in Europe or Australia, but it's a good thing the PS Vita isn't region locked.

Playing all the games in ordering beat 1 though that game felt like a bit of a chore I loved it. Beat 2 today and was deciding if I should go to this game or 3, so I watched this video to decide. I'll wait for the fan translation or remake. It looks great though.

Yep! A long while back I added scanlines to retro games, but decided to stop since it doesn't look as good when people aren't watching in full-screen mode. :)

@@kidrobot. Reviews have been on original hardware every time, except some PlayStation 1 and 2 games were played on PS3 for HDMI capture. :)
Its a pity you have to play through it twice to access the extra dungeon. But there is still things about this game which are unconfirmed. Like 2 rare mutations for Michael and Shokuin (i think). Its been speculated they can only be accessed on the second playthrough.

In P3 you have the option to play an MMORPG called "Innocent Sin Online" on your days off of school, which is also the S. Link for someone named "Maya," this is a nod to Persona 2 right? Kind of like Gekkoukan in P4?
Yeah, that seems to be the consensus. "Maya" is kind of an unusual name, so to see it pop up in another Persona game and have it *not* be connected would be a heck of a coincidence.

GOD I fucking loved the story, lore, and themes these games had. I wish it continued this way in the latter half of the series. I found the gameplay in this game to be quite tough though. The bosses are hard af if you're not prepared or don't have the right personas. It took me a while but I eventually got the hang of the system and had an easier time later on. And I ended up really enjoying it. I'm glad it was a step up from IS's difficulty (seriously that came was such a cake walk that it was a joke). I also really enjoyed the dungeon design more in this game than IS. They were actually really fun to get through. My problems with the game though is that battle system flows a bit too slow. Like when you get hit or hit an enemy, the damage distribution would flow to slow. This even worse in the PSP version of IS. It feels like PS1 is faster but its still overall slow. Also the encounter rate is ridiculously high in these games.
My opinion on both: IS has a better story/plot, EP has better gameplay and better written characters. Both stories are still amazing though.

+Greatguwgullheiser Hmm... Not really. But I bet you could create a US PSN account and use it to download US PSN titles. I think some people used to do that for Japanese exclusives. Not sure though.
I still think it's a shame that Atlus dropped the ball on this. I have the original, and the PSN version that I got for a buck, but I don't think that I'm ever going to play it. Also one of the reasons why I gave up on the PSP first half. Too many good updates too the PSP release make going back and playing the PS1 version a bit of a chore.
Ahhh man, I'd love to own this game with the original box art.. Alas I own a DS because of Smt 4 and not a psp. I still have a PS1 but no way I'm paying 250 quid!
Very good review :) but I'm watching this on my PS3 (so on the tv), and every time you make an 'S' sound it makes a little annoying screech-like noise that was really distracting and gave me a headache.

Perhaps I should give the Persona games a shot, I just finished playing Final Fantasy VI and Earthbound, both kinda disappointed me. Perhaps Persona is better?

Super Derek I put quite a high emphasis on Story. Games like those in the Kingdom Hearts and Fire Emblem series are ones I've enjoyed in the past. Chrono Trigger and the Devil Survivor series (Also a part of the Shin Megami Tensei series), and the Valkyria Chronicles series I've also enjoyed.
That's what I can remember from the top of my head.
Tartar Have you checked out Breath of Fire III or IV yet? And Persona might also be a good choice. Persona 3 would probably the best entry point because it's sort of a mix of Persona 1 & 2's darker feel, with some of the the gameplay of Persona 4.

The ps vita is a great system for playing the person's series, you can get all of them from the psn store, except for persona 5 obviously.
This. Just ordered the PSP port of Innocent Sin for only $19.99 and plan on picking up Eternal Punishment for $9.99 later down the line. This $20 PS Vita TV has saved me a ridiculous amount of money since if I want to experience these games I don’t have to go out of my way to emulate or pay an arm and a leg. I’ve probably saved a few grand easily since I’ve played classics like Suikoden II and Shadow Tower for $5.99 each and there’s countless other games like the Arc the Lad games or rare expensive PSP games like Lunar Silver Star Harmony!
Hopefully the PSP version gets english translation from that one team

That would have definitely been a clever nod, but browsing the megami tensei wikia article on her, I don't believe that there is. The names are very similar, and Maya is a reporter, but only for a popular magazine, not television. :)
Perhaps she slightly changed her name for her "stage name"? Dun dun dun! :O ... Probably not, but it could very well be an intentional similarity as an Easter egg for long time fans. ;) Good catch!

i have played Persona 3,4,Persona 4 Golden, and Persona Dancing All Night.
It's not strictly necessary to have played through Innocent Sin to figure out (eventually) what's going on in Eternal Punishment. The game does a pretty good job of explaining the stakes, and you get a general sense of what happened in the first game once the plot really gets rolling.
Lol 70$ for a copy!!!! This game runs for 300+ now. And that goes for a lot of retro games

I just persona 2 innocent sin yesterday and I want to play the psp version
I have no idea where to get this game?...would have liked to play it before playing the third but it's so expensive it's crazy :( I can't spent 350 euros
Playstation network had it for like $8 last I saw

I don't have any console above Playstation 1 and 2, would a PSP or PS3 work? (it's funny that buying an used PS3 console would be cheaper than buying the PS1 game)
@@Pelendralaar94 yeah I believe you could get them on PSP or PS3 if the store is still open, psvita would also be an option I think. Plus if you get the PSP or Vita version you can play part one of the duology, Persona 2 Innocent Sin, which I personally preferred. :)

Hey can someone help me out? I’m reading that this game isn’t in English. I want to play on my vita but I don’t want to pay the 10 bucks only to find out it’s strictly Japanese.
So, originally this game released on PS1 back in the day. That came out in the US, and is on the PlayStation store. There's a remake that came out in PSP on Japan only. We never got that one. So if you're looking at the PS classics game on the US store, that one's in English. Hope this helps!

I love the Persona series and have beaten all of them except this one because i just couldn't get into the clunkier mechanics of the PS1 version of EP right after the PSP version of IS. I'm not sure if i should wait it out for the translation or try to play the PS1 version again >.>
It's a really tough decision to make, but honestly I would probably wait. Only because I played and beat the game on the PlayStation, and would still love to go back and see what they did in the PSP update. On the other hand, I feel like if I had played the PSP port first, I might not have much reason to play the PlayStation version. Or maybe you could just play through it twice? Once on the PlayStation version, and then again on the PSP later on using a different branching path? :)

I thought the PS1 version of EP has way better mechanics than IS PSP. Mainly it's menu system. I liked having a list of all my character's actions at once and choosing whoever I want, rather than being forced to advance everyone's action one at a time in PSP IS.

I just got $10 for my PS Vita and I was wondering if I should get this, FF7 or FF9. Which one would you recommend?
+CluelessDetective tough choice, but I think I'd go with Final Fantasy IX, I think. I would only play Eternal Punishment if you've already played Persona 2 Innocent Sin first, (which I also think is far better than Eternal Punishment by the way.) :)

dupin9 Go to the playstation store on PS3, look up "PSOne classic" it'll have a list of ps1 games. Persona 2 EP is there. I saw it the other day.

oh and the negotiations are a crapshoot.

No game exists in a vacuum, it's best to look at games in the context of their release. But I believe my points were still valid. The game was tedious, featured a lesser cast of characters, and is imo, overpriced.

Overpriced? It was one of the best games I've ever played.
Tedious? Anything with "grinding mechanics" is tedious.
Who cares that a game has less characters?
Example : Chrono Trigger vs Chrono Cross
Lesser meaning worse. Tedious regarding the management of character turns during battle needing to be adjusted every single turn. Grindy doesn't bother me, I specialize in RPGs. Best on the PlayStation is pretty subjective, but I'm glad you enjoyed it.
