Thank you for this video, i just unboxed my A6000 with 16-50m kit lens bundled with an E55-210mm zoom lens. Your video definitely help me out in starting with mirrorless camera after being a point & shoot guy for a long time. Keep doing what you are doing, i enjoyed most of your videos!
thanks for the great information on getting to know my camera and it's features. Nice to know that the answer isn't purchase another lens for tack sharp. Will definitely give this a go.
Cheers Fella! Came here after you posted on the Jason Lanier FB group! Really useful! I didnt even know it had eye focus! I thought the face detect would naturally focus on the eyes!
You have been so great with these a6000 instructions. When you achieve Eye Autofocus, does the indicator triangle come on and then go off, or is it supposed to stay illuminated until the shot is taken? Thanks again.
Thank you. I'm new to manual lenses and I've got say I've been pretty disappointed with my results using focus peaking. However using focus assist I get much better results.
Great video, just seen by me as have only recently acquired a Sony a6000. Believe that very helpful link may have expired, can you kindly put up the current equivalent, many thanks , also, a very easy to follow video.
Thank you so much for the useful information. Never knew that the a6000 had eye focus capability or a downloadable manual. Your video was very useful and easy to follow and understand. Thank You!!!!
Very helpful. I wish I could make a6000 focus reliably indoors. I find that I need to limit myself to fast f/1.8 zooms, shooting wide open, to get it to focus close to reliably. Firmware updates have helped a bit but still resort to DSLR indoors.
+Art Altman Ah! The 600 lb gorilla in the room! Mirrorless fans don't want to hear it; but, with the current technology DSLR and DSLT cameras have an advantage focusing in low light (until you get the A7S...) So, what can you do? If you already have a DSLR or DSLT camera you may want to hang onto it for a few years. If the A6000 is your only camera there are a couple of things you can do. Two options that come to mind are 1) Use your cell phone flashlight (or other light source) to illuminate your subject so you can see it clearly, then use manual focus, turn off the light and snap! 2) Grab a couple of speedlights and set up multiple bounce flashes (see my video on off-camera flash). Then, you can mount a little LED video light to your camera's hot shoe and the camera will use that light to auto-focus. When the flashes fire, they'll over ride the light and shadows the video/focus light produces. Often what you choose boils down to workflow. It's been said, "If your only tool is a hammer, then every job must be a nail" Our cameras are our tools. The A6000 is kind of like a Swiss Army Knife! It does a LOT of things really well. But, if you want to "get the shot" you need to know its weaknesses, not JUST its strengths. You can always beg, borrow, steal or rent other gear from time to time for special situations!
Thanks Brad, I was struggling with the Eye Focus feature and your tutorial cleared up the mystery for me. Keep up the good work. Sad how Sony can send me all kinds of email to buy stuff Happy that you brought this great Focus Guide to my attention well done again Brad!
Brad get videos any news about an A6600 hundred coming out soon? Currently have the 6000 and 6500 love those cameras. Especially I prefer not to carry heavy cameras anymore. Keep up the good work !
I just got this camera as a gift from my husband to leanr and pursue photofraphy as its been my dream since a little girl. Also this would be a great part time job for me as a stay at home mom, but i find it sooooooo hard to learn all these tricks.... oh and edditing phootos..... i guess i need a good edditing program... what do you suggest?
I'd suggest the Light Room / Photo Shop combo. It's $10/month. But! It's widely used and there are SO many great free TH-cam video showing you how to use them. It's rare to have a problem with a photo that you can't do a google or TH-cam search that quickly returns many options for info or videos to show you exactly what to do. Also- be patient. This is a marathon, not a sprint. It can take a while or even years but you'll get it! Enjoy the journey!
I'm not sure what the "Best" is but... I'm using a Sandisk Extreme Pro, 64 GB, 95MB/s SD XC-l, U-3 Class 10. Wow! You'll want at least 64GB cards to enable the XAVCS video format. I'm told there are a lot of fake cards being sold so to buy from a reputable dealer. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
I do have a question when using manual lenses. Is there a specific mode or something I need to turn on and off when using it on the a6300? I have just been leaving it in auto and attaching the manual lens.
+greysuit17 On my A6000 I go into the menu and activate "Release without Lens". Then, I'll shoot in M. I'll select my shutter speed (if in doubt set your shutter a 2x your lens focal length), then I select my aperture. You can use the camera's meter or live view to set ISO. Sometimes I'll use Auto ISO. If in doubt, fire a test shot or two.....
Hi Brad.. Do any of these methods help when shooting fast moving kids?! What should I be doing to get sharp images with the eyes and face in focus in this scenario?
hello! i bougth a sony a6000, and i dont know what setting i change but the flash is different than the regular flash. do you know how to change flash types on the camera?
+Jesus Altamirano There is a menu item for flash compensation or strength. It's there to let you set "fill flash" levels. make sure its set to zero. If you can't find it just do a factory reset and that will restore the factory (original) settings
I just did a 10 second quick check- My A6000 with a Rokinon 12 mm lens did move in when I psuhed the button. I hven't had a chance to try with "Autofocus" lenses set to Manual focus.......
Now it only magnified 1 time. With stills I push the button once and it zooms in, then I push the button a 2nd time and it zooms in super close. I could only get it to do 1 zoom during my little 10 second video test!
Can ANYONE answer my question - can eye detection be ON when using MANUAL LENS with A6000? You know what I mean: you focus manually (with fully manual, old lens) and camera detects eye as it comes into focus? Please, anyone?
Eye detection is an auto-focus feature. It does not work with manual lenses or when you've selected Manual focus for your lenses that are capable of auto-focus.Thanks!
I've had my Sony a6000 for a little over a year now. The other day while on a wedding I noticed after I took a few photos the camera started to freeze. Couldn't change the aperture, Shutter speed, couldn't even review photos or go into the menus. I read online that a few other people are experiencing the same issues. Any solutions?
BradZChef Thanks for the quick response and your advice. I keep the camera pretty clean. Do you happen to have a link to or can guide me to this forum please?
I am a owner of sony a6000 and a7R which adpator should I buy for which camera LAEA-3 or LAEA-4, my a-mount lens are SonySAL70-400G, Tamron 70-200mm 2.8, Tamron 18-270mm 3.5, Tamron 28-75mm 2.8........I shoot Athletics, Footy and Portaits.
Technically the laea-3 supports auto exposure (but not auto focus!) and the laea-4 supports auto exposure AND auto-focus. Which one for you? In my humble opinion- neither. I've worked along side David LaRochelle who shoots an A7rii with the LAEA-4 to focus his a-mount sony/zeiss 135mm. The lens will technically auto focus, but it is so slow that David just focuses manually. Also- below f/13 Sony only uses contrast focus (not phase detect) so the lens just sits there and hunts. Word on the street is that with the A7Rii and the A6500 there have been some improvements so that the adapted lenses will actually behave like native lenses, particularly with the Sigma mc-11 and the newer Metabones adapters. Since you have the A6000 and A7r your cameras may not perform the way you'd expect. If you really want to go the "adapted lens" route either rent the adapter for a week and shoot with it yourself or at least buy from a store that has a 30 day "no questions asked full refund" policy so you don't end up getting stuck with something.
Does anyone know how to get Focus Magnifier to stay on the screen longer. It zooms in but you only get around a second to focus. So I have to keep on pressing my C1 button.
hi Brad. why do I get thus message when I tried to set the Focus Magnifier feature. I got this message: "this operation or setting is not available as follows: single shot AF"
That's what I call pragmatic. Simple, concise, to the point. A rare thing these days. Thank you sir.

Thank you for the tips! I was struggling with the focus on my camera; I find every picture is grainy when magnified so I hope this helps.
Yes . Struggling with this.

Informative, clear and concise. I like your easy-going delivery too.
THANK YOU BRAD! I never knew about the eye focus mode. I was always wondering why my camera would focus on my subject's ears or hair. Not anymore :)
You, sir, are a great teacher. This will help with people and mostly with my new used Olympus 50 mm f 3.5 mm Macro lens I recently purchased on Ebay.
Thank you very much for your video. I am hoping that I can adapt your manual focus method to focus stacking of landscapes.
Thanks so much for sharing this Brad. Focusing has been an issue for me since weeks and I hope to gain some insights from this.
I had always wondered whether this camera had eye auto focus. Thanks for the info and tutorial
Hi, Brad!
Thanks a lot for that video. It helped me a lot! It's not only the young that know what's going on.
Best regards.
Peter

just downloaded it myself. the link still works.

Thank you so much for the useful information. Never knew that the a6000 had eye focus capability or a downloadable manual. Your video was very useful and easy to follow and understand. Thank You!!!!
It would be cool to see a comparison of your two shots. One of auto focus and one of your manual.
Very helpful. I wish I could make a6000 focus reliably indoors. I find that I need to limit myself to fast f/1.8 zooms, shooting wide open, to get it to focus close to reliably. Firmware updates have helped a bit but still resort to DSLR indoors.

I'll be trying this when I get home! Thanks for the great guide 👍

Great share! Lots of very helpful information! Might I ask do you know if there is a camera specific "focus setting guide" for the Sony a6500? Thanks!
Not that I'm aware of
Brad, thanks for your tips. I will look forward to more from you.

I have the guide in hard copy. it's ok the rest of what you said is great info . nice job Brad
Thank you Brad. Very helpful. I didn't know that guide existed.
When using focus magnifier, are you in manual focus mode? Can eye autofocus be used while using autofocus and/or back button focus?
Very nice video. Straight to the point. Thank you.

Too bad, it would be a killer feature for manual focus lenses... Thank you for your answer!
1... is there any way to get the apps for free for sony cameras...??
Thanks for your very helpful VDO.
Which focus do you need to have with the eye-af ? Continuous AF seems to be incompatible with eye AF for my A6000 ?
Issou AF-S or AF-A. I believe the A6500 can use AF-C

It seems to be coming down to cleaning dust and corrosion from the top wheel(s) & shutter release from what I've read on the forums. Hope this helps!
