  • In this video, Gary Fong discusses the different Auto Focus settings on your Sony Mirrorless camera.
Focus Mode gives you many options such as freezing focus before shooting or constantly measure focusing as you're shooting.
Focus Area Wide means all of the sensor points. The number of auto focus points will vary depending on your camera. This is a great feature on the Sony Mirrorless cameras because it offers a wide area of coverage for focusing and tracking your moving subject.

I have found that your videos now make up the bulk of all my sony a6000 videos. for as popular as this camera is there are not a lot of people who explore its vasts capabilities like you. Thanks for going over real-world situations with it. this walk through of the focus features it was extremely helpful. much appreciated.

Gary. Excellent detailed explanation on focusing. I just got the A7iii coming from Nikon for many years and I am at this learning curve with this fantastic camera. Focusing is the key to excellence vs mediocre and you have made it easier for me to customize my settings. I just subscribed and looking forward to seeing more.

    Gary,
I'm a hobby photographer and I like shooting photos for my friends who participate in triathlons. I've been experimenting using background motion blur with my Canon, keeping the shutter speed low and panning with the rider as they zip by on their bikes. I just picked up an A6000 and I was wondering what you would recommend for focus settings to achieve the same effect? Thanks.

OMG I know I saw how to do it before and yet I cannot find it on the video again. How is it that you can do the old focus and recompose process but with the camera actually keeping that object you focused on originally in focus. Like having a face on the edge to the right focused after I recomposed?

Some kind of lock on focus perhaps or take off auto?? Thanks for all the videos!

If I’m taking a picture of multiple people and the person closest to the camera is on the far right of the frame should I focus on that person or focus on the person further back in the center of the frame? If I focus on the person to the right will they be the primary focus or is my camera just saying that the person closest to me is the beginning of where my camera focuses and from there I can get more focus depth through aperture?
    Thanks!

How do you "reacquire Katie" @6:00? I'm a little confused about how to lock focus on different areas. It feels as if there's no way to unlock it. I can use my A6500 touch screen, but I feel that there should be another way to move the flexible spot. I'm using Lock-On AF: Expand Flexible Spot as you recommend and like it a lot - just want to understand what your fingers are doing as you demo it.
