    I borrowed all your other settings, each screen, paused, set it up, moved on. Thanks. Well done. I was using a Sony 3.5-5.6/16-50 Optical Steady Shot so no f.2.0 for me. but I got some of my fave lowlight shots ever. I haven't tried the video yet. I subscribed, and am looking forward to learning more. I want to move into 4k video Sony Alpha camera.

    A much easier way is just to turn the "Live View Display" setting to OFF. Yes, it will be like a more traditional DSLR but that it is much quicker to turn on and off for low light rather than all these settings.

    Do you know the difference between above and below?

  • @v1m30
    @v1m30 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    There are only these settings that actually matter and determine how the focusing is done, all the rest you show in both videos is a a load of guessing and changes that have no effect. Continuous AF vs Single AF changes the way the camera focuses, using what type and how fast, continuous is faster in sensible light conditions but AF illumination doesn't work with it, single AF is the only way to go in very low light conditions if you want to focus on an object that the AF illumination could hit, it's close object or you want more accurate AF at the cost of a little bit of speed as continuous AF is not as precise. Second how big focus area do you want, wide/zone or center/spot will determine on what the camera will be trying to focus, depends what you are shooting. The rest of the camera settings make no difference except preAF can if stationary for some time pre autofocus beforehand making focus in user request faster. You don't need to be in RAW or change anything else. Effect preview ON is fine and even at -2.0 eV you can see the image on display in low light conditions and what you will get as the photo, where as effect OFF can be useful if you are shooting with external flash etc. meaning the camera doesn't know how to compensate the image with show effect ON. Of course if you are not in need of face detect and AF lock on then turn them off but you can definitely use them even in low light if you wish and deal with their impact on focusing behavior. Overall set it to continuous mode, turn illumination on and you can blast in any conditions because the main center button by default works as single AF while your main shutter button as continuous AF. For normal use though auto AF may be better so that Eye focus can be used and if needed it will automatically switch to continuous such as for burst shooting. It's a shame one has to switch the camera between single and continuous AF for eye AF, lock on AF and low light conditions. Continuous is nice but can hunt depending on what you're shooting especially with face detect or lock on AF.
    Summary: turn on continuous AF, turn off everything else you don't need, use central button for single AF with illumination when cont. AF fails in very low light, at worst press C1 to switch to manual focus and do it the old way.

    @harveylouis445 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very informative, thanks. My settings have been very similar to yours (with the exception of preferring AF-S for it's more precise AF compared with AF-C), yet the AF still struggles in low light when contrast is low. Do you think I should try manual focus with peaking in this situation?

    • @harveylouis445
      @harveylouis445 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just tried DMF with focus peaking and I noticed that I have the benefit of autofocus in addition to the peaking color appearing simultaneously. Additionally, I can manually fine-tune the focus. I think this may be the solution I was looking for. Any thoughts on DMF?

    I sold off my a7 because I was tired of it constantly failing to perform in lower light situations.

    • @roll_another_one
      @roll_another_one 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will make it for you: It's the best all in one you can buy. Fast autofocus, great image quality, much better value then it rival the ZEISS 24(?)-70. Of course f4 is not the best of the best, but still you can cover a full travel, from monuments to landscapes to close up portraits w/out ever changin lenses. It is not a specialized lens, it is a lens do to everything w/ only one lens. If you need a lens only for landscapes, or for portraits only, there are better options. But this is the most versatile lens you can buy for your camera under 2000$.

    I'm just wondering that when you were in aperture priority, and you bumped up the EC dial, which then increased the shutter speed, presumably that also increased the ISO if your aperture stayed at F2?

    Caution: When you turn off the live view effect, it practically effects how the aperture change when in live view and specifically focusing, and it shifts focus, better turn that on if you want sharp focus specially at smaller aperture settings. trust me.

      If you can afford it, the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens
      would be a great choice. It's 2.8 Aperture setting will allow you to let in plenty of light and with the crop factor of the a6000 it would be an equivalent to 105-300mm.

    When I shoot with the A6000 in low light with flash at ISO 100, I find that acquiring accurate AF is more difficult with narrower apertures. How wide do you typically open up your aperture in this situation?

    • @LavikkaPhotography
      @LavikkaPhotography  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Harvey Louis All of my glass is good wide open so I open all the way up if I need too.

    • @Nitrxgen
      @Nitrxgen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ISO 100 is a bit too low for low light surely, you could increase that to something enough that grain isn't noticeable, people usually say 1600 is their preferred limit before the noise really begins but I guess it depends just how smooth you want a picture. For scenic shots, use the widest aperture you can get; its drawback is the narrow FoV but only on nearer objects. If you're brave, try using manual focus with focus magnifier and peaking colours, super helpful if you got some contrast somewhere for reference. Your comment was posted a year ago and I'm sure you've probably learned a lot since then so this can be for newcomers.

      +Lavikka Photography aha I think I've just confused low light with no light, I got the idea, thanks!
      Unfortunately in real life it looks not so fancy as in video :)

    David, I have tried to duplicate video several times and failed. Could it be that I'm lacking a firmware update? I just can't get seem to brighten my screen as much as you. I'm using the 24mm 1.8 Zeiss. My only source of light is from a TV. Could that be the issue?

    Your explanations are good but I couldn’t see the buttons of the camera when you actually moved them or makes changes in the sitings, is too fast and also dark.

    Hello. What did you meant that you don't like shooting bellow 1600 due to the noise?

    How can i record 60p vids with the A6000??

    • @LavikkaPhotography
      @LavikkaPhotography  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +88elbron88 just change to that in your video settings.

    • @thenikhilray99
      @thenikhilray99 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +88elbron88 You have to choose NTSC to enable 60 fps..else on PAL its 50 fps .

    • @nugenki
      @nugenki 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +88elbron88 I'm a scrub, but I find that leaving my shutter speed at 1/60 speed is pretty important for what I film (sports) and plus it is evenly divisible to 120hz light flicker so it won't contain any weird dark frames.

    • @thenikhilray99
      @thenikhilray99 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +88elbron88 yeah if shutter speed goes below 60 then it wont be recording at 60 fps . found it myself few weeks ago when at night i was recording at 60 fps but after playing found it was not 60 as shutter speed was way below 60 xD

      Hmmm I have no idea I just use 64s because the price is right. I don't see any limits in the specs.

    2 things .
    1600 iso is very noisy hell 1000 is very noisy.
    1/20 of a second without a tripod is going to be incredibly shakey .

    Good and bad video! Bad point is why dont you have some light on the cam so we can see what control you are fiddling with! The video is bit too dark!
