DMF is for like, if you see a hawk way up in the tree branches, and your auto focus is unable to focus on the bird vs the branches, and you want a short cut of getting to the general area, the DMF cuts quickly to the general area of the hawk but then allows you to use manual (and focus magnifier) to focus on a smaller spot within the general focus area. It's just a time saver.

It's funny how different people use the camera differently -- I upgraded *fairly* recently to a 6000-series camera after shooting on film w/manual focus lenses for years, and DMF is my preferred focusing mode, I basically never leave that mode :)
The topic Ive been looking for, alot of channels have done this topic but never really explained it well. You nailed it. Have you done a video about Focus Area settings? Thanks
Just commenced viewing your videos and they are excellent. I find setting strong colours in focus peaking makes manual focus tack sharp and is easy to set up. I may find myself more willing to use manual focus having been raised on mainly manual focus cameras.

Wow just found you! So helpful! I got this camera almost 3 Christmas ago but it was gifted to me by my husband to capture memories of our pregnancy. Unfortunately our baby passed and I didn’t wanna touch it bx of why it was given to me. But now I have finally come around to using it to shoot our baby! ☺️ so I really hope u bring more videos of tips for “ video tricks and tips” it is such a cool camera but I’m clueless !!
Just bought a Sony a 6000 for TH-cam an you videos are very helpful but still have a over heating problem I am from the Caribbean Trinidad 🇹🇹 keep up the great work
I thought DMF meant digital to manual focus. But yeah it means direct. It’s to help quickly focus digitally on a subject and allows you to change the focus from that. A time saver if you like to take artsy shots and you want to tweak the focus point after the camera focuses for you
Again, thanks for the clear explanation, I really like the way you share your experience and knowledge, I like your videos, they are very useful for me. Thanks! :-) (I'm buying an a6000, so I'm sure I'm going to check all of your related videos several times. :-) )
Really nice video thanx for making this. I bought the a6000 recently and I love it. One question though how do you transfer images from the camera to the phone?. The imaging edge app doesn't seem to work properly.
There was an issue right around when iOS 11 came out. Check the news section in the app to see what Sony recommends. Unsure if the issue affected Android or not. I haven't used wifi transfer in a while myself. I use a lightning to SD card adapter.
So when I take pics of kids at school for yearbook I s/use AF-C? And if I take some pictures of people dancing, let's say at a wedding reception, I s/use AF-C? Thanks for your help! I wasn't real sure, being a beginner, what all the different focus modes meant.
When half pressing the shutter down in AF-C you’ll see the green squares right? That’s the camera actively focusing (continuously focusing), so fore movement based stuff, like kids always moving, that’s best.
Hi man, love your videos. Youre a big reason why I recently bought the A6000 camera. Can I ask what strap you've got in your video? I wanna buy one but I am not sure buying a random one online will be good...
DMF can be used for eye-focus right? You can arrange a button to eye-focus, hold that button so it will focus instead of half pressing and then completely press the shutter button.
Hi, I'm new to your channel and really love your content! I just bought the Sony a6000 about 6 months ago and am looking to expand my lenses from the two basics that came in the kit. I'm shooting high school football, baseball, and basketball. What lens do you recommend for this? Thanks so much and I look forward to watching more of your videos!
Thanks for checking the channel out! Two good lenses with great reach are the 18-105 f4 G lens, and the 18-135 f3.5 - 5.6. They won’t do that well in low light, but they great all around lenses. Also keep in mind full frame lenses like the 70-200 f4 or 2.8 are comparable with the a6000!
@@ClassicalPan focus on your subject then half press the shutter button and adjust the focus ring. help you focus at eyes on dark place which auto focus sometime fail to focus
For the focus mode examples I’m using the Sony 35mm I think and the video is shot with the sigma 16mm f1.4. Checkout my bokeh basics video for more info. The kit lens can look similar, but other prime lenses like the ones I mentioned will be much better.
Hey - I am really enjoying your videos. They're really helpful- so thank you! Do you know why sometimes when I am in the view photos mode (when I hit the arrow), it says unable to view. Any tips on that? Thanks!
Thanks for this great video. Please make more A6000 related tutorials. Looks like the lens yoy are using is the 35mm f1.8 . which is on my camera 90% of the time.
Send to smartphone is grayed our? I do know that right there there is an issue with iPhones and the WiFi sending. In the ImageEdge mobile app there is a news alert for it. It gives you a work around to connect.
If I want to keep the focus on one object while moving around the shot without it refocusing automatically do i need to have the AF lock option enabled?
AF lock will AF lock on that plane of focus. You need to use object tracking. If you have the a6000 you can start that by hitting the center button. It's not the best compared to the newer a6k models that have amazing object tracking.
i've been using manual focus because i had this problem where i wanted the camera to keep focused on one object while getting different shots at different angles but it tends to keep refocusing
@@kyletaggart What i meant was how in the firs tpart for af-s you're doing exactly what i wanted but you also have af lock on, do i need to have both of these enabled?
@@sezoism yeah you can try object tracking (it may have another name) but when you hit the center button and the object is in the center of the frame it will put a box on the object. If the object moves it will stay focused only on that object.
@@kyletaggart Thanks for the responses just trying to figure this out. So I tried doing what you do with the AF-S and once I focus on an object I move the camera's angle but it just keeps refocusing on the middle of the frame instead of that one object I focused on. I don't see you using the lock on AF option in your first example with the gnome so I'm confused..
Hello, what mode/s would you use when you are doing sit down videos and you want the focus to be on your face/eye and when you want to show a product to the camera, it focuses on the product? And at the same time, when there is someone in the frame, either from the back or in front of me, the focus will still be on me? Please, respond to both my questions. I want it for one shot. It would focus on my face/eye but not someone behind me or in front of me and at the same time, when I want to show a product to the camera, it goes from me to the product and from the product to me when I am done showing it.
If you want it to stay focused on only your face, when other faces are present, you have a few options. 1. You can use manual focus, and have the focus plane be where you’re sitting. However I assume you want auto focus, as you want to put products in the shot sometimes. 2. AF-C, face detection on, and set focus area to wide - in this mode faces will be the priority and usually what’s closest will be the priority. However if someone comes up in front of you, the camera will go to their face. Also, when face detection is on, if you show a product, it has to cover most of your face so the camera goes “oh no face, I’ll focus on what’s closest”. 3. You could use the same stuff in step 2, but also use face registration. You can register your face with the camera, and then your face will be the top priority of any face the camera sees. 4. You can just use wide AF area and not turn in face detection. Closest thing in frame to the camera is what the camera will try to focus on. You raise a product in front, it will go to it. Put it down, it will go back to you. You probably want #3, if other faces will come up in FRONT of you. Otherwise I’d say option 4 is fine. Option 4 you don’t have to put the object in front of your face, so it’s easier to just show a product without having to block your face with it. Hope all this helps! 👍🏻
@@kyletaggart Hello, thank you so much for responding. If I use the number 4, if there is someone in front of me, it is going to focus to that person, right? I like the APS-C option. Can you also play with the Focus area? So that it would only be on me when someone is in front of me or behind? Do you know if there is any area for that?
You can use flexible spot or center focus, and if your face is in the center, or on the spot you choose, the camera should choose that spot. However if the other face takes up a lot of the frame it’s possible the camera may go to that.
@hikyletaggart hey big man. So if we're in video mode, maybe vlogging or whatever , filming your surroundings etc . Assuming AF- C is gonna be best option for that yah? Also, whats the situation if you using a manual lens, will AF- C not work with it ?
AF-C is not available for manual lenses. Manual lenses have to be adjusted manually on the focus ring. As for vlogging AF-C on a lens with auto focus is optimal for video.
Hi kyle.. I just get one A6000 camera and hope to learn from your channel. I like this video, what camera and lens you use to shoot this video? Thank you..
hi. just came across your video on focus. i have been shooting in manual mode learning it. but as you are saying.. like for AF-C do i change the dial to letter A or S and not manual mode ?
No you can use the different focus modes in any of the shooting modes. A aperture priority, M manual mode, S shutter priority are shooting modes. The focusing mode is changed in the camera settings, not from the dial.
Hello :) I have a question, if it is possible to take good portrait having kit lens 16-50mm for sony a6000? I am thinking about buying this camera but all lenses seem pretty expensive to me and I am wondering if for the beginning I could practice on 16-50mm?
Of course you can. Apply principals in my bokeh basics video, and you can get great results. Also, there are cheap prime lenses 35mm f1.7 that can give “professional” results at like $35-$50.
Well, thanks, once again a very useful video. I’d love to see a video about in camera transition if you feel like it! Keep up to produce such good content we love it! See ya!
What focus mode do you recommend for shooting portraits with more than one person? I been using AF-S and it just seems it never gets everyone completely in focus?
AF-S focuses on the plsbd if focus once it beeps or you fully press the shutter. If you or the subject move forwards or backwards before the shot, but after the focus, then the focus may be off. If you’re shooting people who are moving a little or you’re moving, use AF-C. There are a lot of things at play. Where are you putting the focus point, or are you letting the camera decide that for you, and shutter speed-to ensure you’re accurately capturing motion or lack there of to get the sharpest shot. If you’re shooting more than one person for portraits, you can also use face detection. You can then get boxes that will come up over the faces the camera recognizes and it will focus there. 👍🏻
Note: for normal recording it does overheat at 15ish minutes. For live streaming it’s just a pass through device and I don’t think it overheats. Also pickup a dummy battery (AC adapter) so you don’t need batteries for the streaming setup.
Yes it does overheat. But what's a dummy battery? And to my first question, doni even need to change settings for video livestreaming? And what are suggested camera settings for shooting video?
@@WealthWithRob a dummy battery is basically a battery that is just a casing. It sits inside the battery compartment, and then has a wire that goes to a wall outlet. So it's a constant power source. That's what a streamer would need so the camera can remain on for hours. As for settings for live streaming, I'm unfortunately not sure what settings you'd need to do. I'd look for a tutorial for it, which I bet there are a few as I do know this camera is popular with streamers. Lastly, video and photo settings are alllllll about what light you have available. However, a rule of thumb is to always have your shutter speed DOUBLE of your focal length. So say you have a 30mm lens, make the shutter speed 1/60th. Also the a6000 has great face detection (you could have that on for streaming and have confidence your face is always in focus.)
Can you tell me how to turn off the "auto playback" when you power the camera on? When I power on the camera I want it to be in live view, not playback. A 1/2 shutter makes it go away but still trying to figure out how to turn that off.
This doesn't happen on mine, and I don't see a setting for this. Auto Review, for me, is set to 2 seconds. That setting doesn't affect it when your turn on/off the camera. I double checked and just checked different camera modes (intelligent auto, aperture priority, ect). Are you only shooting in a specific mode?
@@kyletaggart Kyle, I have it mounted on DJI M600 Pro for aerial mapping. A few things worth noting. I have a dummy battery so that the camera is powered by the 3axis gimbal. I have an HDMI out which feeds that out thru the drone flight controller so I have the video feed on my tablet/ remote controller. I have it set to manual mode. The power switch just stays in the "on" postion. Then when I power up the drone the camera comes on and it has a preview of the last photo. I think this may be due to the HDMI cable being plugged in to the camera. I can 1/2 press the shutter button and I am now looking at the Live Preview or I can take a photo using the drone remote controller and that will clear it out. Moving forward that will likely be the simplest thing to do. Thanks for getting back with me!
I’m trying to like the focus on the A6000 but I find it more cumbersome than the A5100. On the A5100, I just click the area I want in focus (background or foreground) on the touchscreen and it does it. Is there something as easy as that on the A6000?
What shooting mode are you in? It may be disabled due to the shooting mode you’re in. For example, switch to “M” for manual, and then see what focus modes you can switch too. I use aperture priority mode a ton “A” and can utilize the different focus modes. 👍🏻
Here is what puzzles me. I have all settings I believe fine, sharp image wanted so with iso of 100 and proper lighting. Image looks great on the screen and I take the photo - for a split instance it shows a crisp shot taken then quickly seems to degrade the image quality so it becomes a touch blurred. Photo is good when downloaded, but zooming in I can see lack of sharpness. Any ideas please?
There’s a lot to unpack here. The small screen makes it difficult to judge sharpness. Are you shooting jpeg or RAW? If you’re shooting jpeg the camera is doing internal processing to the image to give the final result. If you shoot RAW the camera leaves it untouched, and when you get it to your editing program you’ll see the RAW image to edit to your hearts content. Jpeg - and depending on picture profile does process and make changes to sharpness, contrast, and saturation. There are other settings to watch out for as well, HDR/auto HDR, noise reduction, high iso noise reduction. I can’t say if any of that comes default or not. Also I know you’re saying lighting is optimal and you’re shooting ISO 100, so in theory it should be a very sharp image, but it could be because of the lens as well. The kit lens is just not as sharp as say, the Sigma 16mm f1.4. I also don’t know what aperture you shot at, or what shutter speed. I’d say make sure you’re shooting in the file format you want, jpeg or RAW, maybe even try both to see the diff, try different camera profiles if you’re shooting in jpeg, and test different lenses. Feel free to email me or DM me on Twitter or IG for more help so I can see examples! Thanks!
@@kyletaggart I'll find you on Twitter if that is OK and send you images - Thank you for the reply and I have been watching and totally learning from you re the A6000 so 'tip of the hat' for that to you...
@@kyletaggart hey, thx for response. it would be a typical model photoshoot, where she changes poses quite frequently, focus would mostly be on her face, but not always, sometimes her face won't be visible, or to focus on another area for a few shots. type of scenario where you don't want to miss a good shot, because you got to keep changing settings on your camera. i have been watching videos, but still don't know what would be best for this scenario. i was thinking having it on AF-C with face detection on for most the time? but i wonder if there is something that can be done quick to change from face to a specific area focus and back again? also what shooting mode is best for this? i am thinking aperture priority? sorry for so many questions, but need to figure this out. one more thing, i notice on the a6000 you need to halfpress the shutter to focus, is that always? because that kinda bothers me for some reason. do newer cameras like the a6400 or a7iii, need to be half pressed for focus or can they just be pressed once?
I change my settings all the time. I one point I was using the picture profile neutral for everything, but I’ve gone back to standard. I may do a video on this topic!
Hi mate not sure what’s happening to my AF-S mode but it does not focus on a small area, the green frame when half pressing is a big frame around the whole picture and not on a specific point in the frame. It was working not long ago and I think I may have accidentally changed a setting somewhere. Help! 😭
Focus AREA. You can change it to wide (which yours may be on), zone, center, or flexible spot. Sounds like you want center. Which will show one green box in the middle.
Hello. My husband just got me the a6000 and I was wondering what lens is best for photography mainly for portrait and what is best for indoor low light?
Sony 35mm f1.8 is great all around lens. The Sony 50mm f1.8 is great for portraits and is cheaper. The main thing to know with the prime lenses, is they are one focal length and that’s it. There is also the brand new Sigma 56mm f1.4, and it’s been reviewed as pretty awesome. The Sony 50mm f1.8 is the cheapest and a great first lens option.
Please help! When I half press the shutter, the green grip appears and focuses, but even after I remove my finger from the button, the grip is still there and it stays there. I have to half press a few times to remove that grip. But it doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes the grip disappears when i remove my finger which is normal, and sometimes it doesn't. I brought the camera to the camera store I bought from but the staff says it's just the "mode" you choose, and it's normal... but is it normal? Is it about the "mode" ? I have had this camera for 1.5 years and it never did that before. I resetted the camera but it still does the same!!

I didn't know I had manual focus assist on and thought I bought the wrong lens 🤦🏾♂️ super helpful video
Glad this was helpful!
Just bought a Sony a 6000 for TH-cam an you videos are very helpful but still have a over heating problem I am from the Caribbean Trinidad 🇹🇹 keep up the great work
Thanks man! Yeah it’s flaw of the camera. Especially for long video recordings.
Shout out to the lil ant at 2:00
Haha I had no idea there was a little guy roaming around!
Sneaky little guy, Great vid 👍
Thanks! 😊
Definitely spotted that !
Lol I said wait aas that an ant. He made his debut lol
awesome! thats just so great to hear. hope you dig the other videos!
What if you need to take a night star long exposure but it doesn't allow manual focus
What doesn’t allow manual focus? Even on auto focus lenses you can change to manual focus.
Thanks for your video! Been searching for some basic camera tips for my new camera and this was hopeful and not toooo techy with jargon!
Thanks for checking it out! Glad it helped Amanda. 😊
omg thankyou so much!! I'm a newbie on this things so this really helped me figure everything out little by little! Thanks!
Thanks so much!
Great video and informative! And yess for the drive mode topic etc inside the a6000 :)
Thanks for the support!
Oh okay will do that! .Thank you for replying!
You helped me A LOT. I just bought the a6000 and I needed some info. Thanks!
Awesome!!
Very very very helpful and still relevant in 2020. Thank you.
Just got a Sony 4600 and a lot of this applies. Thanks for the tips.
I don’t use one personally, my gf just has the strap that came with it. I’d recommend checking out anything peak design.
DMF is important for Sony primes, since the focus ring is slower compared to other third party lenses.
How does it work? There wasn't an explanation of it in this video so I'm still lost on that one.
@@ClassicalPan focus on your subject then half press the shutter button and adjust the focus ring. help you focus at eyes on dark place which auto focus sometime fail to focus
What lens were you using in this video? is the kit lens (16-50mm) that comes with it good enough(or compatible) to get those shots?
For the focus mode examples I’m using the Sony 35mm I think and the video is shot with the sigma 16mm f1.4. Checkout my bokeh basics video for more info. The kit lens can look similar, but other prime lenses like the ones I mentioned will be much better.
Now everything is clear in my head. THANK YOU
Awesome! So happy it helped!
Thank you so much and very nice video. By the way which lens you are using in that video?
Thank you! I use the Sigma 16mm for every video basically. th-cam.com/video/ZeOPkiKb4aY/w-d-xo.html
I never knew about the focus ring *runs* need to go get started because I'm fed up of my camera focusing on the wrong thing haha!
thanks so much
Buddy How do you get the rectangle lines on your camera for to maintain the symetric nature ? I just cannot find that option in my Sony A6000
I’m not home but look for display options, rule of thirds, or gridlines.
Hey - I am really enjoying your videos. They're really helpful- so thank you! Do you know why sometimes when I am in the view photos mode (when I hit the arrow), it says unable to view. Any tips on that? Thanks!
Possibly due to the photo buffering. Especially if you just did a burst. Could depend on memory card too.
Thanks for this great video. Please make more A6000 related tutorials. Looks like the lens yoy are using is the 35mm f1.8 . which is on my camera 90% of the time.
Thank you! I love that lens so much. I’ll be making more like this!
New to sony a6000. Thanks for sharing helpful tips!
Thanking for checking it out!
Hii!! Great content. Can you tell me how to zoom in while using that last type of focus??
Hi Kyle, thanks for these great video’s. I purchased mine... but my options for WiFi sending are greyed out. Do you know how to fix this issue?
Send to smartphone is grayed our? I do know that right there there is an issue with iPhones and the WiFi sending. In the ImageEdge mobile app there is a news alert for it. It gives you a work around to connect.
2:00 That Ant!!!! LOL
This was excellent - super helpful! Thank you!
Awesome!!
Can’t wait to watch it during lunch time! See y’a!
@@kyletaggart thanks legend
Thank you, thank you! This has made it clearer!
That’s the goal! Thanks
@@kyletaggart oh ok. thanks ! greatly appreciated
i will be so happy if you make a video on portrait photography
Definitely!!

Very informative. Please keep up the good work!
Thanks so much Harish!
Well, thanks, once again a very useful video.
I’d love to see a video about in camera transition if you feel like it!
Keep up to produce such good content we love it!
See ya!
Thanks Paul and good suggestion!
Thanks for the information! Love your videos too.
No problem Shelby!
Hi Kyle. Focus Peaking would not be operable when using a manual lens, correct?
No it IS available during Manual focus. That's the main time you'd want to use it!
You do have to turn it on, and then you can set the level of it, and the color.
What the best focus mode for capturing emergency scenes and firefighters in action?
Sony a6000, face detection or center.
Sony a6100, object tracking.
I am trying to use this for Video purposes.
1. What's a good setting for livestreaming?
2. For normal recording
I hear it is good for streaming, I see a lot of streamers use it. Also i use it to record all of my videos.
Hey Kyle, have you tried using back-button focus on your A6000?
I have not. I’ve thought about using it. How about you?
Ah I see, that is most likely it (the HDMI setup). When I use a monitor for my videos I believe it does that as well.
I’m trying to like the focus on the A6000 but I find it more cumbersome than the A5100. On the A5100, I just click the area I want in focus (background or foreground) on the touchscreen and it does it. Is there something as easy as that on the A6000?
There is no touch screen on the a5100. Not sure what you’re referring to.
hikyletaggart bro, the Sony A5100 has a touch screen.
Good subject! Would love to see more videos on the A6000
Posting at least 1 a week! Thanks for stopping by.
Or maybe the upcoming a7000

Great video thanks,I just swapped one with my d3300 and it’s loads better in video mode
Nice! Yeah i bet auto focus is so much better!
Sony a6000 old but gold camera. I am saving up to get that camera.
I am also buying tomorrow. Feeling very exited now
Sick!! If you’re using amazon I got links everywhere for that. 👍🏻
I only have af-c and manual focus on video mode. Can i change that?
Thanks!

What focus mode is best for a photo shoot with a model.
depends on what you want to convey. You can use AF-S and Eye AF, or AF-C if they're constantly moving.
Hello,
THanks for still making video on ar6000
I change my settings all the time. I one point I was using the picture profile neutral for everything, but I’ve gone back to standard. I may do a video on this topic!
Hi mate not sure what’s happening to my AF-S mode but it does not focus on a small area, the green frame when half pressing is a big frame around the whole picture and not on a specific point in the frame.
It was working not long ago and I think I may have accidentally changed a setting somewhere. Help! 😭
Focus AREA. You can change it to wide (which yours may be on), zone, center, or flexible spot. Sounds like you want center. Which will show one green box in the middle.
hikyletaggart appreciate the reply Kyle. Thank you very much!
Great video thank you for the good information and ot taking a million years to say it!
Thanks! I do blabber on sometimes haha.
Yeah man keep it up. I love my a6000 but there aren't many good tutorials on it.
Thanks Jesse! 🙌🏻
Unsure what you mean. Maybe send me a video via email so I can see it? ✌🏻

When I use AF-C, I only get a square in the middle for focusing, instead of the hundreds of little focus squares you get. Do you know why?
