First I want to say great video but second you became a cake eater, Chief’s run the navy and always will. My son right now is on deployment now on America’s carrier the USS Carl Vinson CVN 70 holding the line for all of us so all of us have the freedom we have today. From the DeckPlates up GO NAVY

I followed in her wake for 2 years, 1978-1979 on USS Worden (CG-18) when based in Yokosuka. I was a boot recruit. Even earned my shellback card on the Worden. Many of days we were plane guard for Midway and even had to do a recovery of plane parts if I remember right after a plane crash. Also did a refugee rescue. As we were pulling into Subic Bay, we got called out. Hell of an experience for an 18-19 year old to do all I did for 2 years in Midway's wake. Would not have given it up for anything....:)

I love San Diego. My older brother was in the Navy 6 years in the early 70’s. Corpsman/OR Tech. He never left California! Went back and forth from San Diego to Oakland Naval Hospitals.

      “Oak Knoll Naval Hospital”
      … I knew it well !
As a Navy Brat, dad retired to Alameda.
I had a surgery or two there.
      Mom died at Oak Knoll.
As a Navy wife, our first born arrived at Oak Knoll 3 years later.
ps… I was born in Coronado too, not Balboa Hospital.

One of the times we plane-guarded Midway was when she got turned around after the Ranger hit the tanker off Singapore in 79. Did an Unrep one time with Ranger to port of the IIRC the Kansas City and we were to starboard of her.
Unrep Station seamanship - kind of thing that separates the sailors from the guys along for the ride. My usual Unrep Station was JOOD with the Conn. That got pretty hairy too.

Some of the best content (for me) is the personal experiences in places that are 'off limits' to regular folk, so the bit of your story that you shared was awesome. My wife's son was stationed in San Diego while he was on the Shiloh, so we've visited SD many times over the years. A few years ago, we toured the Midway with our grandson, which thrilled him and me (Janell, not so much).

I served on the Midway in 1980. My Marine squadron, VMFP-3, always had a detachment aboard serving as the eyes of the fleet. We flew RF-4B's which were photo recon aircraft. I was a Com/Nav technician. My enlistment ended in 1981, so I launched my civilian career in the high technology world, not involving aviation. Things some how go in circles and I found myself working for a company based in San Diego who manufacture unmanned aircraft. I've been back in avionics since 2009. Thanks for your channel, and for sharing your adventures in full time RV'ing! 🙂

Started aboard USS Hoel DDG-13, went to Fleet Training Center 32nd Street for training on the Phalanx Close In Weapons System, then turned around and spent three years as an instructor. My next command was USS Meyerkord FF-1058 and finished up my time in San Diego at the pre-commissioning detachment for USS Chosin CG-65 which I was a member of the commissioning crew in Pascagoula, MS 12 January, 1991. At 15:30 you talk about meeting full-timers again and it is "like yesterday". We don't full-time but I know the feeling. The Marine Corps is small enough that during my time there we crossed paths with friends we'd made and left more than once. We even followed one family from base to base the entire second half of my career and was there when I retired. We're still in touch with most of them and plan to use the RV making trips to see them once again. Fair winds and following seas Sir, and Stacy. Oohrah!

Phil, this was a fantastic video. I have visited the Midway several times on overnights with my airline. Being an retired AF mustang, I truly enjoyed hearing about your expiriences. I saw the smiles of the volunteer vets faces when you recounted on the diffierent areas of your boat. Is there a Lt Commander's cut of this video with more boat stories? -Darin

"The Tip of The Spear" was my home for over 5 years (2 tours). Where I worked would never be on a ship's tour (too small) although my job was so important that no pilots could fly if we said no. I was an aerographer's mate (weather observers and forecasters). Except for the MIdway, every Navy building (housing and barracks) that I lived in has been demolished. It makes me feel good that something of my history didn't get destroyed.

Thanks for sharing your adventure. I was just there a month ago and had a great experience. I was touring alone and I think all of the guides felt bad, so they would walk me around telling me all about he carrier. I was so lucky to see a refugee from Siagon come back to the ship to reunite with the Bossman. It was a very tearful reunion for all that were there. My father is a Vietnam Veteran so it was extra special for me.

Great video, as always! You mention how close the airport is to everything. Our ship was visiting the Coast Guard base (which included the airstation) in San Diego, across the street from the airport. In those days when they wanted to launch a helo, they would close the road, 'drive' the helo across the street and take off. It was a hoot! Love San Diego! Travel safe!

Our son was stationed in San Diego, he was on Coronado Island in early 2000. Nicholas was EOD what a scary job for a mother! He was very good at his job, he actually became a senior eod! Sadly we lost him in 2006. He was a great son we miss him everyday but it helps a little knowing because of his sacrifice many were able to go home to their families. We travel full-time home is upstate ny, fingerlakes region! If you haven't been I'd put it on your list of must see! Safe travels!

Rachel - I retired 2 yrs before the loss if your son. I spent most of my 30yrs in EOD on the reserve side, therefore did not personally know Nick. Just attended the retirement ceremony in Coronado of a Senior Chief (EOD) friend yesterday who most likely served with Nick at some point. In around 2006 I was very involved in our community Little League and we had one of our Little League dads (EOD) went on deployment around 2006 who most likely served with Nick. As a father now, can't even imagine your pain, but you seem to understand the greater good Nick lived for. No doubt his expertise and dedication made it possible for many others serving in dangerous places to go home to their families. EOD is a small but very dedicated group of quiet professionals. My condolences.
At the moment I'm transitioning toward FT Rv'ing hence why my visit to blogs like this. Safe travels to you and your family. I would have preferred to send this as a private message, but no clue how to do that. LOL

My brother had his retirement ceremony in 2017 aboard the Midway. He retired as a Captain after 29 years. His boss, an Admiral, did his retirement ceremony. As a former Navy Seabee I was honored to meet more Commanders and Captains in that short time than I did on 5 years of active duty.
