  • Commissioned on September 10, 1945 - just 8 days after the end of World War II - the USS Midway is an aircraft carrier that served an impressive 47-year career in the United States Navy. She was the flagship of Carrier Division 1 (now “Carrier Strike Group 1”), and served in a number of peace-keeping missions including the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm.
    Since 2004, the USS Midway has been operating as the largest naval ship museum in the world in San Diego, CA. If your travels ever bring you to San Diego, make sure you cruise down to the Embarcadero and check out the USS Midway Museum for yourself!

    I served about the USS Midway from 1988 to 1991, including Desert Shield and Desert Strom. I have been back to visit the grand lady several times over the years and am pleased that she is still thriving in her post-Navy afterlife. Thank you for this expose on this amazing piece of Naval history.

    I was able to tour the USS Midway while in San Diego on a business trip. Loved the tour. As an Army vet, it was great to see how sailors lived on a carrier.

    Just got back from a trip to San Diego. Took the tour, What a fantastic experience. Especially the retired guides who served on the Midway. So much history. We ran out of time, so they simply stamp your ticket & let you go the next day at no extra charge. A must see for anyone visiting SD.

    In 1989 the midway entered port in my home town of Perth in the port of Fremantle. The ship was open for tours and we managed to take one and walk around the ship. As an 11 year old it was the first time I'd gotten to see F-18's and other planes up close. The experience has stuck with me over the years.

    Push a bunch of expensive helicopters overboard to make room for one Cessna to land on the flight deck? Why not send them up in the air for a half hour, clear the Cessna to land, then bring the choppers back in?

    • @ExploreAlways
      @ExploreAlways  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      D’oh! Didn’t think of that! 😂😂

    • @johnc2438
      @johnc2438 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Many of the choppers were of questionable flyability, having come in from the Vietnamese army and air force: (1) sending them up for a half-hour or so might have killed or injured sailors and refugee civilians crowding the ship; (2) the ship had to be ready to undertake its own flight operations and needed a clear deck, just in case; and (3), taking the time to refuel each chopper and then get them to lift off to make room for the Cessna would have resulted in the Cessna running out of fuel and crashing into the sea. Thus there were no room for excess Vietnamese helicopters: they had done their job, so pushing some of them into the drink -- quickly -- was the correct decision. BTW: Only those helos actually in the way of the landing area were pushed overboard. Some remained on board and out of the way after the Cessna landed (you can see two of them as the Cessna comes in for a perfect landing).

    So it launched with Hellcats, Corsairs and maybe Bearcats, and by the time it saw combat it had F4 Phantoms.... That's a big difference in plane size and power.
    It makes those Skyscrapers look like cottages by the lake.

    Went there today. Was in the infirmary part of the ship when I saw a door that said do not enter. About 3 do not enter areas later, im 2 floors down from where I started and had a huge metal door shut behind me from a mysterious draft that came about all of a sudden. That was the last time i went exploring by myself. Really wish I had the opportunity to go see what was behind all of the do not enter areas though. cool ship nonetheless

    Sorry, the Lexington CV16 was longer serving carrier. Midway was decommissioned from 1966-70. The kids working there wanting people to get their pictures taken. After being a Midway member for many years, I canceled my membership, because of the idiot kids. I've been on all 5 carrier museums. Midway is by far, the least exciting ship. Many people would rather have the Hornet here
