In this chapter, we cover some basics for people who are new to rigging in general. If you can rig an IK leg in your sleep you can safely skip this part. The next chapters will be more exciting :)
    ⚠️NOTES & ERRATA
-I call the little spheres on each end of a bone "nodules". This may not have been the best word choice. Sorry for my English. :-] Officially the one in the thick part of the bone is called "Head" and the one in the thin part is "Tail".
-around 8:29 I ask you to give the elbows and knees of the character a slight bend. This mainly helps the IK constraint figure out which way the limb should bend.

Speaking as someone who can only speak his native language I say your English is excellent. You speak it better than some native speakers I've met! Additionally your use of American expressions such as "stays put" is perfect and adds to the naturalness and ease of following your thoughts. More generally this is a great tutorial so far. I watched Humane Rigging years ago and found it overwhelming. Yours is much simpler and easier to absorb. Thank you very much!

    • @CGDive

@@artemiasalina1860 Ah, thanks that's encouraging. I had no idea that "stays put" was an American expression lol
I am glad you like the tutorial!
Humane Rigging goes much deeper into the details of manual rigging. I had to watch it 3-4 times before I started to grasp some of the concepts. It's a great resource but can be overwhelming as you said.

This video is something else. I've watched so many "easy rigging" videos but the truth is that this is not exactly easy unless someone explains it thoroughly like in this video. For the first time my character is not only rigged with a good result but I actually understand why it works!
Perfect pace and content! This is the best rigging basics video I've found! Can't wait to continue with the series!

  • @JunkerJames

Followed this through! Really enjoyed it. At about the 2:05 mark, copy constraints are shown. When I started manipulating the root rotation, toward the end of this, I noticed that my feet kept pointing the same way in worldspace compared to the other parts of the rig. But, I figured out that you can add a "Copy Rotation" bone constraint, on the feet, targeting the shins, and only using the Z axis. You also want to use "Add" for the Mix so that you can rotate the foot ontop of whatever the shin is doing. I'm sure this is a throw-away rig, before we move on to rigify, but I was happy to be able to fix it on my own, and hope this comment helps others!

You are a very good teacher, and this is a vastly under-followed channel.
I like the walk-throughs of various problematic methods of getting rigged animation through a Blender gamedev pipeline (and why they're problematic) rather than just skipping ahead to your preferred solution. It lets us understand and learn from the pitfalls you've already gone through -- something missing in most instruction materials. You know I have to pick up your full course on Artstation now :-)
