    This chapter (Chapter 2) is the only theoretical chapter of the course but I think it's necessary. Here you'll learn about the Rigify workflow and how it differs from traditional rigging.
    I created this course to show you how to build CUSTOM Rigify rigs that can fit any character.

    I am working on making an animation for someone and am finding your tutorials very informative/helpful. In the project, I am using caterpillar and butterfly characters and trying to figure out how to apply an armature to them as well as see if I can create some transitional stages (instars) from the caterpillar models. Been delaying the rigging process, while bouncing to other areas of the animation, but am gaining confidence while watching your videos. Thank you so much for taking the time to put all these rigging videos together for others!

    You are such a patient and thorough teacher. I took you NLA course and I am so impressed at how you take these hard and misunderstood topics and explain them with the care and accuracy that a paid educator would do. But you are giving this to us for free! In true Blender spirit. SO I'd love to know, how did you figure out all this about rigify, considering that there is very little documentation? Did you just experiment and figure it out on your own (a feat which seems impossible to me)?

    • @CGDive
      @CGDive  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the nice words!
      Well, there is some documentation. It's not easy to read but it's there. There were a couple of other sources that touched on the advanced features of Rigify. That was a start but from there I had to do a lot of trial and error, I am afraid :)
      That's what I like about making tutorials tho... If I only do it for myself, I wouldn't go too deep. But if I want to teach it to others, that really motivates me to leave no stone unturned.

    • @CGDive
      @CGDive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably didn't delete ALL of the face bones. My guess is that you missed the parent of the face. Zoom in on the head bone and see if there is another smaller bone parented to it. It should be right inside the head bone so switch to wireframe or x-ray. That bone is called "face". Delete it and you should be able to generate ;)

  • @Bloodsong13T
    @Bloodsong13T 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Amazing, and so helpful, thank you!
    I have a quick question... does the ENTIRE rig have to be a rigify rig? I was wanting to only use the limbs for the FK/IK switching, to add to a basic rig. Your 'Frankenstein' analysis seems to indicate that won't work? ;D (i need to use the specific rig for a game i develop for.) Thanks a bunch!

    • @CGDive
      @CGDive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi.
      In this series, the "Frankenstein" approach simply means trying to customize Rigify without a proper understanding of the system. That just leads to errors and unpredictable results. But if it works in the end, then frankestein all you want haha
      Now to your actual question. No, the entire rig doesn't have to be Rigify. The rig generated by rigify is normal blender armature so you can combine it with your own custom parts. There are a bunch of things that you have to keep in mind when combining the Rigify parts and custom rigs.
      E.g. if you re-generate a rig with custom parts in it they'll disapear so always keep a copy of your custom rigs.
      Probably the best way to add custom parts is to create them inside the meta rig and make all custom bones "basic.raw_copy". But working with this rig type is a bit complex. You have to define your own DEF-, WGT- bones etc. I give some in-depth examples in my advanced Rigify course, it's a bit complicated to explain in the comment section.

    • @CGDive

      I think I understand what you mean. By default Rigify is set up to automatically align the bone roll. This is meant to help the user but it can be something that you want to setup manually. Many of the Rig Types have a setting like what you see in the image below. Change that option to Manual instead of Automatic and that will give you control over the alignment of the generated rig.

    At 10:30 He talks about how It does not work with certain pipelines. As a complete novice I don't really understand what this means. Can anybody explain to me what a pipeline is?

    • @CGDive
      @CGDive  ปีที่แล้ว

      "Pipeline" just means the "set of tools" that are used by a company or individual creator. A pipeline also implies order. So you're not just randomly doing stuff but you have an exact workflow that defines how things should happen. E.g. first you create a 3d model, then you unwrap it, then texture it, then rig it. And you don't use any random tool but just the ones that are allowed by the pipeline. So by placing certain limitations on what you do and how you do it, you ensure that things flow along the "pipeline". The larger the production, the more important that is.

      I didn't mean the actual medical diagnosis (which I don't know much about) but the "colloquial" meaning of OCD... If you want things to be done in your own way with a lot of flexibility, then you may not like Rigify because it has a more or less pre-determined functionality. That's all.
      I hope that wasn't too insensitive :)

  • @brexitgreens
    @brexitgreens 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instruction is perfectly clear but still - like every other tutorial - unnecessarily complicated for a beginner: it doesn't teach you how to employ very simple armatures. It only teaches you how to make the ultimate, feature-complete armature, and you cannot use it until it's finished. There are no intermediate levels. The ultimate armature is unnecessarily complex for simple uses. I want to use five bones to pose a human mesh, possibly even a metaball object, and add complexity later. Or a cubic exoskeleton to pose a blob.

      Did you see the previous video?
      th-cam.com/video/ERAScO1s8Zk/w-d-xo.html
