    Try talking to yourself the way you would talk to Flynn. Next time it happens and you notice “negative self talk” it is good to say something positive to replace the negative. Even though it might seem insignificant, over time it adds up and builds muscle memory in your brain. (From my understanding) You are truly wonderful regardless of your differences! ❤️

      Mental therapist here. I would just add to anyone reading your comment that the replacement thought doesn't have to be positive necessarily. It can be more realistic, neutral, or helpful. Sometimes reaching for that "positive" is too difficult when we're having a down on ourselves moment or can feel invalidating or like toxic positivity. So just wanted to provide some alternatives if a positive re-frame is too difficult in the moment :)

    Colleen, as someone who has trichotillomania/dermo my picking/pulling comes in waves. recently i have been picking at my feet to the point of limping as well. it sucks so much and i completely understand being disappointed in yourself over it. One thing I did that helped with my picking/pulling was to always keep my feet moisturized with socks on. It makes it hard to grip the skin and therefore I just give up and quit trying to pick. I'm sorry you're going through this but I just want to let u know that you're not alone!

    I am glad you’re open to talking about dermatilomania. I understand it is frustrating and you want disappointed in yourself. I want to bring in another perspective that you have A LOT of “stressors” right now. Erik’s family is in town, you are taking care of three children, you are a working woman, you have a live show, and probably other things/ projects we don’t know about. That is A LOT for one person to handle. The reason you probably had such a bad night with the dermatilomania was due to all of those “stressors” compounding. I don’t want to call them stressors bc that may sound negative, but that’s the best word I could think of. If this is the first time you’ve had a bad night/ day of dermatilomania in nearly a year that’s amazing! Yes you were pregnant and that prevented it, but I feel that is still progress! Your feelings are totally valid of feeling disappointed. I wanted to bring a different perspective and hopefully allow you to not be as disappointed as long! You’re amazing 💗💗💗

    When Flynn was a baby you used to communicate with him by teaching him Sign Language.

    As someone who has trichotillomania, I CONSTANTLY have to remind myself that progress is not linear. Some days are bad and some days are good but either way, it’s progress. And my friends all help me too if they see me doing it they’ll just give me a gentle nudge to stop me. It can be so frustrating when I’ve been trying not too do it and then do it agin. But like you say, it’s a process and we will all get there in the end :)

    !!!!!‼️THIS COULD BE HELPFUL INFO‼️!!!! Hi Colleen!! There is something called the babybrezza or the brezza that makes the bottles for you. You can also have an app on your phone that you can use to make the bottles from the other room. You set the temperature and everything so it’s done for you. Anything that anyone is doing for their babies or baby is great but i know a lot of people who have this and love it!! Love you so much!!

    • @elliec8402
      @elliec8402 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes, this sounds like a very good idea, but there have been multiple cases of the brezza either pumping out too much or too little formula powder into the water, which can cause problems with the baby. but yes, it sounds like a very good product and would be great if it was successful!

    • @amymarie073
      @amymarie073 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I have the Brezza and was so worried for awhile about whether or not it was putting in the right amount of formula. I would weigh bottles I made versus bottles the Brezza made, and the Brezza was always right on! Eventually I just calmed down about it and it’s a super helpful machine to have. It definitely takes some maintenance because you have to change out and wash the funnel every 4 bottles, but it’s worth it for the time and hassle you save. (I have read that a lot of anecdotal stories of the Brezza putting out incorrect amounts of formula come from people who do not correctly clean the machine.)

    I'm currently studying psychology and I have ADHD. I'm not sure if this is proven or true but hearing you talk about your experience with skin picking ( I can't spell so we'll go with that lol) it made me think about how it's a common symptom with ADHD to have executive dysfunction and your struggle with skin picking and feeling zoned out seems similar to executive dysfunction to me like you know you should or shouldn't be doing a certain thing but just can't move forward. I know you've talked about executive dysfunction before and how it's frustrating but you've accepted it as something you have to deal with, maybe looking at your struggles with skin picking with this in mind could help you see it differently. Just know what your brain decides to do is not you and doesn't reflect you. Sending you love and support. You got this! 💕

    • @karaautumn2024
      @karaautumn2024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is possible! But body focus repetitive behaviors such as dermotilomania are very commonly presenting comorbid with ADHD. This is typically because ADHD brains use skin or hair picking as a coping mechanism and as a form of filling a need for stimuli, which is why it turns into a fixation. I just graduated with my psychology degree and as someone with ADD and a BFRB it’s great that Colleen opens these conversations!

      @@Coinfliplunatik because she's a lazy parent and the Ballingers infantilize their children. There's your answer. Just because she's been sharing this stuff for years does not make it appropriate. She should not be sharing all this private information about her kids before they can even consent to footage of them being consumed by millions of people online. And people have no business asking invasive questions like this either. It's all inappropriate, from every angle.

    I have severe dermo with my back and scalp, and in the past few months I was doing so good; the scars on my back were starting to heal and basically all the dandruff on my scalp that was there due to picking was completely gone. Recently, for some reason, it has come back with a vengeance, to the point where I've ruined multiple white shirts with blood and I can't have my hair down because of the flakes and scabs. I was feeling so down on myself for a few days, but I did something different this time, I talked about it. I have tried to conceal this from friends for so long, but I just vented about it without being embarrassed and it felt SO GOOD. Basically what I'm trying to say is that talking about this on your channel is not only being open and bringing awareness, but it's also getting a lot of the frustrations off your chest. I'm now 3 days without picking, and it doesn't seem like much. but with this condition all the small things count. Hang in there, and you're not alone!!!!!!

It makes me feel much more comfortable because the pain is gone.

    Dont beat yourself up, you're doing the very best that you can with your disorder. some days we win and some days we lose but the important thing here is that we never give up the battle, but even on days when we "lose" it's very important to be kind to ourselves and maybe to take a step back, understand that maybe we needed to do that then, and in any case being kind and understanding to yourself is key.

    Colleen I can totally relate to what you’re saying about being so disappointed in your dermotillomania being bad at the moment. I have trichotillomania and I get so upset with myself after the fact. Especially because I’ve had this for years and been able to hide it fairly well but now sometimes it’s not even possible for me to hide it, it’s really shameful and I do feel so disappointed in myself after but like you while I’m doing it I don’t really think about it or even realise the damage I’m doing. It’s honestly so helpful to hear someone else even just talking about it though, even though you’re having a hard time. It makes me feel less alone 💖

  • @jeanninebechard6294

    I have trichotillomania. It definitely comes and goes in waves. And I swear the waves are in synch with hormonal changes, like around your period, pregnancy or postpartum. I know it can be a way to relieve stress or release unexpressed feelings, but the longer I have it, twenty three years now, I believe more and more it’s tied to our physical hormonal changes more than anything. If it is a physical symptom of uncontrollable hormonal changes, there is no need for any disappointment when it gets intense. I love you and thank you for all you share with us. You are beautiful inside and out. 💕

    The thing that helped me, buy a course grit nail file (a very fine grit doesn't work) and as SOON as you start picking pull it out and file the skin until it's completely soft and there's nothing to pick at. When you feel any type of anything you feel compelled to pick at it and then you just keep picking and it gets worse and worse and you just can't stop. So file the skin with course file when it starts until it's completely smooth nothing at all to feel the need to pick at

I didn’t have “normal” contractions with my first labor..I had contractions back to back from the start of labor and they were pretty intense. I labored for almost 37 hours😣 Different breathing techniques really help a lot of people,a warm shower or bath,being able to move around,making your environment as soothing as possible can help. There’s quite a few things but you really gotta find what works for you individually and know that sometimes nothing helps.

    I have trichotillomania and I totally feel you with on progress and being disappointed in yourself.
    I shaved my head for 8 years straight starting when I was 13 because it was so bad and I started wearing wigs for fun at 21 and it helped me not pull my hair out so much. A year later and my hair is shoulder length, but the past 6 months I've pulled out a softball sized bald spot right on the top of my head. Can't wear my hair any way but a bun with some eyeshadow filling in the bald spots to go in public.
    These disorders can make us feel so bad about ourselves and out of control but it's important to remember they don't define us and aren't tied to our worth. Sending you lots of love ❤

    I am currently going through the same thing. I am not diagnosed with this disorder but for the longest time I have picked and chewed the skin around my fingers until they bleed and hurt for weeks. But recently I have been doing it to my feet. I completely understand where you are coming from. I work on my feet all day and I am limping around most of the day. I tried telling a friend about it and they just said "Well just stop doing it then. It's about mind over matter." and it just sucks when people do not understand that it isn't that easy and it makes you seem weak. But I am working at it and hearing that you're going through the same thing makes me feel less alone. So thank you and I hope yours gets under control soon! Love you!

    Hi Colleen! I am a lactation counselor - while the water needs to be clean when making formula, it won’t kill any bacteria that is in the powder. The formula itself isn’t sterile. In order to kill the bacteria, you have to boil the water then put the formula in to that and then let it cool. Just using “baby” water doesn’t kill the bacteria in the formula itself.

    Thank you so much Colleen for speaking out about the condition. I also have been struggling with it my whole life. It stems a lot from my adhd but also my anxiety. The feeling of dissociation while you’re having an episode or being in a fogged state happens to me to every time. It’s so hard to deal with! and a lot of the time it’s hard because it’s invisible and know one else knows or knows how to help you. It’s really hard. But seeing someone that can be so open to people when they have a hard day it just makes everything feel more validating in a way. I never knew it was a condition until you came forward about it.
