I’m a NICU nurse, at my hospital we just use bottled water no need to boil. The brand we use differs but it doesn’t really matter. There’s also jugs of “nursery water” which we recommend parents buy when they take their babies home. I think you could find those easily! It literally says nursery water on it lol

Nursery water is what I used for both my formula fed babies. Unless I was in a jam and needed water fast lol I feel like it would be recommended by most pediatricians also due to fluoride and other added minerals in some waters.

I always used the pre made 24 oz jugs. All I had to do was grab it out of the fridge, pour it, and warm it up. It’s really great having so many different options when it comes to formula feeding.

You don’t have to boil the distilled water. Distilled has been boiled. Formula companies tell you you need to boil it because that gets them out of the equation if your baby gets sick from drinking some thing in tapwater which is also highly unlikely if you’re using filtered tapwater. If you have a clean home in a city with clean drinking water you can probably use any kind of filtered tap water. I just used filtered tapwater.
I premixed my daughters formula in a dr browns formula pitcher and prefilled bottles. Then warmed as needed.

Yes! We used to make a pitcher of formula and either prefill a bunch of bottles or just pour what was needed at the time . This was a huge timesaver, we would wash all the bottles at the end of the day and make a new pitcher/ batch at night for the next day 🙂

You DO need to boil any water that you’re making powdered formula with, the powdered formula is not sterile & because of this can contain bacteria. The water needs to be no less than 158° F when mixed with the powder in order to kill any bacteria that may be in the powder.

  • @kaylinjameson

    Hey Colleen! NICU nurse here!
We actually use mainly pre-made or “ready made” formula in the NICU so we don’t have this issue often, however, if we do mix powder formula we use distilled water! Bottled water is not preferred because it is not sterilized and risk of salmonella is higher- doesn’t mean it is certain. With distilled it’s boiled at a certain temperature to kill those germs. If you are stressed about boiling, ect maybe try the ready made formula because it’s already mixed for you! Hope this helps! ❤️

    • @iamvip17
      @iamvip17 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Man our NICU only uses the regular term formula that’s ready made but our specialty formulas like for enfacare, gentlease, nutramigen, etc are only powder. I think the stock in my island has mostly powder and not a lot of people can afford ready made 😭 so instead we just use powder and water from water bottles or nursery cause that’s really all we have

I have always used the water jugs labeled "Nursery Water" they are usually in the same aisle with the formula usually about a $1 a gallon. I have talked to my pediatrician about this and this is what she recommended and no boiling is needed. Also, I recommend a formula pitcher only make enough for what you would use in a day since formula can't sit in the fridge for more than 24 hours but it was a game changer for me. I did have to warm it, but shaking the formula (all the bubbles) made my son's gassy and fussy so having it premixed definitely helped. Don't know if that helps but it's whats worked for me. You are great mom and whatever you figure out will be great for you! Thanks for helping me get through the past two years! 💜

Hi Colleen - I majored in biochem and worked in a chemistry lab for several years. I don't know about the specifics of boiling water for babies, but I would recommend NOT giving them deionized water. This is very different from distilled water. Deionized water is typically used in industrial, medical, or scientific settings where it is critical to have a non-reactive water, so its ions have been removed, but it is very corrosive and can damage soft-tissue and teeth when taken in large quantities over time.

We use distilled water for our baby and put it in our Baby Brezza- it’s kinda like a keurig for formula. It makes a bottle in seconds- heats it and mixes it perfectly. It has saved my sanity- being a new, first time mom. It has saved so much time and I don’t have to measure or think about anything for middle of the night feedings. Definitely look into it if you haven’t seen or heard of them before. Love you’re family so much- you’re doing great momma!

  • @a_jax85
    @a_jax85 2 ปีที่แล้ว +331

The Baby Brezza was glorious for me. It’s basically a baby keurig I filled it each evening with nursery water and dispenses the correct amount of formula into bottle-temp water. You just press a button, it fills the bottle, you add the lid, and shake to mix. It made those night feedings (and day feedings, honestly) so much easier for me.
Of course, like everything, not every mom will like every product, but I loved it. Just an option to look into. 💜

Hi Colleen! I’m a Midwife in the UK - we recommend not using bottled water as the minerals etc are too hard on the babies stomach. We recommend using tap water and boiling it every time you make up a bottle as this will kill the bacteria that will be in the powdered formula (which also reduces the risk of the babies having tummy ache!) hope this helps :)

    Formula mama here 🙋🏼‍♀️
    1. Purified drinking water or distilled water both work for formula without boiling it
    2. We got a water dispenser that had a baby bottle setting that would dispense water at the perfect temp instantly, so you don’t have to wait several minutes for the bottle to heat up.
    3. Get a couple of bottle dishwasher baskets to wash all the bottle parts in. It still takes a little bit of time to take the bottles apart and put them in the basket, but wayyy less than hand washing. Just put them in the top rack of your dishwater and run it on the sanitizing cycle if your dishwasher has that. 😊

at target they have a brand of "nursery water" that comes in a milk gallon-shaped jug, and it's the right kind of distilled water for mixing formula. i'm pretty sure it has a purple label! also with the formula, it' kind of similar to how everything else dissolves into water, the warmer it is the easier it dissolves (causes the molecules to move faster and are more spread out) but it does not have to be warmed beforehand for it to mix. either way is fine and works! with that kind of small stuff, it goes back to what you were saying in one of the other vlogs "fed is best". there is no perfect one way to do formula, some people have slightly different routines because it works better for them and for their families, but that doesn't mean that doing it a bit differently is bad or wrong. sending so much love to you and your family

The grocery store will usually have water gallons specifically for babies. It's just distilled water that has fluoride added. I've found that formula mixes in just fine with room temp water. I would just suggest adding the formula to the bottle first, then the water. That way the powder doesn't get stuck in the nipple. Hope this helps!

Combo-feeding mom here! I use Bobbie formula too! I use a water filter pitcher (clearly filtered brand but guessing any would be fine) - I fill my bottle with water from the pitcher, microwave just the water for 20 seconds, but then add the formula powder & shake. Easy, quick, affordable! (I didn’t want to get another fancy machine that we might not use a ton). This has worked well for us for over 6 months now.
You can also prep a pitcher of formula at once for 24 hours and keep it in your fridge, but requires warming the bottle before serving with a bottle warmer or in a mug of warm water (what we do) which takes a little longer when baby is hungry now. I BF exclusively 4 months before combo feeding and totally agree with the convenience of BF, which is why I like the microwave water then add powder method, way faster than waiting for the bottle to warm!
Also a little note to say if your babies will take cold or room temperature formula, that’s totally allowed too - some babies actually prefer it. Heating is just often what babies are used to. I was super intimidated when we started introducing formula, it feels so overwhelming at first, but once you get your system it’s no biggie. 😉

After going to a restaurant with my son as an infant and it being such a hassle to warm the water for formula, I started using room temp purified water to mix the formula. Never had to warm another bottle after that for any of my babies and I could mix a bottle anywhere, even in line at Disneyland 😊

When I’ve nannied babies I would fill up all of the bottles for the day 3/4 full with boiled water in the morning and then let them cool on the counter, when it’s time to make/give the bottle add the last 1/4 of boiling water and then add the formula powder. That way the bottle is perfect temperature and safe to drink! Definitely get an electric kettle to make it easier, apparently they’re not a thing in the US haha

I would say every store here with kitchen stuff sells electric kettles but not every household has one nor knows what one is...people here tend to use microwaves to heat water for tea, or actual teapots. I know on British cruises the ships will often put electric kettles in every room instead of a coffee maker, which makes sense but would just never think of that.
But I love my electric kettle, I want a whole pot of tea not just a cup. Haven't used it for formula tho.. I would go with Nursery Water and a Brezza.

    Infant daycare worker here:
All of our parents use formula and bring jugs of water that are sold specifically to be used for formula. We do not boil the water nor are we required too. We also do not heat the water up before putting the formula in, but some babies prefer their bottles warm so for some we will heat up a cup of water (by putting it in the microwave) and then put the mixed formula bottle in the cup to warm. I just heard about this boiling water thing, and I’ve worked with children for over 6 years so I think it is a new method. Idk if this helps or not 😬
Also: I choked on my food when Colleen said “Anus mouth,” and then acted like that was a normal term. 😂😂

Absolutely love the thumbnail and seeing you surrounded by your adorable kids! I don’t use formula but I grew up in a daycare and no parent ever asked my mom to boil or use a specific type of water. I know that doesn’t mean that is correct but a whole lot of kids in like 30 years of that daycare were all fine.
Also, don’t be embarrassed- you are clearly just an amazing mom looking out fir whats best for those sweet babies!

From what I know you can use bottled water that’s distilled, and you only really need to boil tap water if your area doesn’t have clean water. They have “baby water” which to my knowledge is basically just distilled water. If you’re afraid to use other waters I would just go to the baby isle or look for the label (it’s usually pink and has a baby on it.)
Also there are some little cages you can put the bottle nipples and attachments in there as well as use the top rack to put the bottles and the long little tube that goes into the dr brown bottles they are dishwasher safe. If your dish washer has the option I’d use the sanitizing option. It may be hard to get into the habit but Im a nanny and my Nanny fam uses these bottles with all their kids and when I feel overwhelmed I just rinse the bottle immediately, have the little cage for the dishwasher on the counter and twice a day (nap time and end of day) I rinse the bottles and put them in then run it at the end of the night so the parents start the night/ day with enough bottles until I come back. It really helps to do this because then everyone at your house knows how you wash the bottles and it’s easier to rinse and throw the bottles in the washer than to fully wash a bottle after feeding the babies. Hope this helps!!

I boiled tapwater, enough for ~24hours, filled the clean and sterilised bottles, kept them in the fridge.
When I needed a bottle, I just warmed the bottle in the microwave and then added formula. I also measured out portions of formula in a sectiond container. Made it super easy, like maybe 1,5 minutes from getting the bottle out the fridge, until I was ready to feed my daughter.
Also, from 4 months (non-premie baby), I was told I could just use straight tap water, but I'm from DK and we have pretty clean tap water, maybe that's different other places 🤷‍♀️..
