TUFFHEAD EVOLUTION SERIES 2 Blade Single Bevel TEST

  • NOTE: I sent the heads I tested back to the manufacturer and he had the hardness tested. Turns out they had a Rockwell of 48...and it was supposed to be 55. Glad to have discovered this error. He's having the hardening process changed for future productions. Once I get the new ones, I'll re-do the steel and hardness test.
On a related note, if you use a Stay Sharp Guide 35 degree single bevel sharpener--they hold up WAY better than the present 20 degree bevel--even with this softer steel.
Check out Stay Sharp's new Vid on sharpening this head.
    • Tuffhead single bevel ...
TUFFHEAD has a great reputation for their traditional archery broadheads. Since Jason "Wojo" purchased the company in 2019, they now have crossed over in the compound bow broadhead market as well, with their new Evolution Series. This is the test of their 2 blade, single bevel, 200 gr head. I will be testing their 3 blade head as well, in the future.
This head is machined from S7 tool steel and coated as well to prevent corrosion. The blades are .070" thick and the bevel angle is 20 degrees.
I have a new test for edge sharpness and edge retention, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Tester. I test it out of the box and then again after Penetration Test 1, to see the edge retention. I also have a different test for flight--shooting one field point and two broadheads at 40 yds to see how well they group. And then I have a new overall Lusk Grade that I assign to each head--they receive anywhere between Zero and Ten Golden Arrows.
I have also picked up a new sponsor with my top recommendation for Broadhead Sharpening. staysharpguide... The support I get for that has helped me improve my channel.
Here is my sharpness scoring scale, using the Edge on Up Sharpness Testing Machine:
First of all, what are some common scores for other edges? Here are some examples:
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge takes approx 375 grams of pressure to break the wire.
A utility razor blade takes approx 200 grams to break the wire.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
    Out of the Box Sharpness:
    0-200 gr: 10
    201-300 gr 9
    301-400 gr: 8
    401-500 gr: 7
    501-600 gr: 6
    601-700 gr: 5
    701-800 gr: 4
    801-900 gr: 3
    901-1000 gr: 2
    1001-1100 gr: 1
    1101+ gr: 0
Edge Retention: Sharpness difference after Penetration Test 1:
10 minus 1 point for every 50 grams of sharpness difference. For example, if the initial sharpness was 400 gr of pressure and the sharpness after Penetration Test 1 was 450, the head would receive a 9 for Edge Retention Score.

I wish it did a little better on the cinder block test, although I have always found concrete to be a little dry to the taste... thankfully the traditional version of these broadheads work admirably on hogs... which taste much better than that cinder block. That's a good question. They are excellent in terms of straightness, FOC, and durability on hard impacts, due to their solid construction and thin walls. I've also used Easton Hexx with a 75 gr brass insert and 5" of an aluminum shaft epoxied over the end as a footer--and they were very durable as well. Is it worth it the cost? That's up to each person's individual budget I suppose. They're better, no doubt...but "worth it" is very relative.

I considered them, but got kinda lost since they are very specialized compared to other arrows. If what I understand is right, their gpi is really low but they can handle heavy heads without their spine breaking down too badly. And you can add the inner rod to increase the spine again while maintaining weight forward if the spine is a little weak.

Iron will did so much better , the tips are crappy on these and so much for being reusable . Iron wills for the win .

Well, they did discover that their hardening process was flawed after I did this test. They've since fixed it, so I expect they're much more durable now.

Could you maybe start testing some other arrow to see if the anything else close to what you use 1 dozen of the arrows you use cost a new bow lmao

Thanks Dillan. The best arrow I found before the Bishop is the Easton Hexx, with a 75 gr brass insert. If you also epoxy a 5-7" of an aluminum shaft over the end of it, as a footer, it is incredibly strong.

Sorry Jason. I get so many new viewers each time, that I included it for their sake. But I have planned to delete it soon. I did figure repeat watchers could just fast forward those 4 minutes.

Like I explained in the description, after this test, they asked me to send them the heads and found that their hardening process had been flawed. They have since corrected the problem.
