    Great choice of fabric, really nice! Thank you for the tip on aligning the sides, I had totally missed mine. I had thought of sewing the sides as accents on a full panel, would be easier and less bulky seams, but will try again following your instructions.

    Hi Amy: Thank you for this video. Through this video, I have learned quite a few different ways to achieve a professional look for bag making. I'm still learning, and only have a domestic machine, which screams at me every time when trying to sew lots of layers, ugh. Is oilcloth the same as vinyl? I purchased some and thought I might try it with this pattern. You make sewing look easy on your machine. Your tips about top stitching are awesome. I have never seen a video about not top stitching the lining. You're right, I'm never really happy with the way it looks. I always thought it was me. You have given me more confidence. Thanks for the free pattern and all the time you took to share your knowledge and skill.

    • @AmyLynneDesigns
      @AmyLynneDesigns  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Giuliana you are so welcome!! The machine I sew on is an industrial Juki straight stitch and she is an amazing machine. It doesn't have any fancy stitches like a domestic machine, but since I don't sew clothing I don't have a need for them. I'm really happy with that purchase! As far as Oilcloth goes it really isn't the same as vinyl. Oilcloth is basically fabric with an oil based coat on it making it waterproof and it's traditionally used for table clothes and diaper bags. You can totally use it in this bag, but it will be lighter in weight.

    I find that when I’m sewing leather or vinyl, if I sew a second line of stitching just barely outside the first one, I have less trouble with ladder stitches.

    Would you recommend In R Form Plus as the foam? I seem to have a bunch of it and no Soft N Stable. The In R Form Plus is double sided so I'm on the fence about it. I'm not sure there would be an easy way to trim it to reduce bulkiness.

    • @AmyLynneDesigns
      @AmyLynneDesigns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never used the In R Form Plus. You can always fuse it and then when you need to reduce the seams you could heat it up a bit and it should pull away from the fabric.

    What model Juki are you working with and do you find it to be great for bags with lots of thickness to the seams?

    • @AmyLynneDesigns
      @AmyLynneDesigns  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kris. I am sewing with a DDL 8700 and I absolutely love it. The only other machine I would ever want to add to my repertoire would be a cylinder arm. I do not sew a lot of leather so I don't need a walking foot which is another great option for bag making. I really think to choose a machine it's best to go into a dealer with anything and everything you plan to sew and just play with all the machines!

      @AmyLynneDesigns  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the delay, I missed notifications somehow. I use my 8700 for everything. I don't like the walking foots, I find them cumbersome. My dream team is my 8700 and a cylinder arm.

      @AmyLynneDesigns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can absolutely fuse Thermolam and 809 to leather and vinyl. Do it on a medium high setting and then use a pressing cloth. Press don't move the iron around on the cloth just press and lift.

    • @AmyLynneDesigns
      @AmyLynneDesigns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so sorry I missed your comment. 809 is a heavyweight interfacing. Feels almost like construction paper. When it's adhered it gives the bag nice stiffness without bulk.

    • @BlackWid0w

    I am new to bag making and have made a couple of these. I do what you say about making the lining side a little smaller by increasing the seam allowance. My transition from the seam allowance of the exterior fabric to the seam allowance of the lining is not very smooth and both sides do not end up looking alike when I turn the bag. Any hints for how to do better at that transition? Thanks!!

    • @AmyLynneDesigns
      @AmyLynneDesigns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kelly! I would use a ruler and either a pencil or a water soluble marking pen and draw a line on the lining fabric to follow as a guide and then you’ll be able to make sure both sides are even. And grab a hump jumper to keep those edges where the lining meets the exterior exactly lined up. Oh and throw in a pin at that meeting place too it’ll keep it from shifting!

    • @AmyLynneDesigns
      @AmyLynneDesigns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most tape will gum up a needle, some less than others. Try out this tape, it's really narrow, holds things in place and doesn't gum up the needle quite so much. I wipe me needles down periodically while sewing using alcohol wipes. Also a larger needle helps when sewing through multiple layers, 100/16. www.amazon.com/Scor-Tape-Bundle-Yards-Double-Adhesive/dp/B01DWLWP7E

      Hey Lora! No worries! You can fuse to vinyl, faux leather and cork as long as you do it on medium heat. You can also use steam just make sure when fusing that you don't catch the right side of the vinyl or faux leather with the iron and you should be fine. I fuse to vinyl all the time with great results and no issues, as long as I don't touch the right side of it. If I do there's usually some melting lol!

      Amy Lynne Designs thank you so much Amy. I really love your video on the Sunshine. Really helps me a lot when I made one for my Swap Sister.

    It drives me mad when I see people peeling double siding tape so easily... whether large or tiny, I can NEVER do it without using a pin or something to start peeling it, it does cling to my finger etc... Mind you I have a curse on me with any kind of tape...

      melendu29 You made me laugh! Some days the tape peeling is on my side others it takes me a half hour!

      If you bend the fabric, it forces the backing of the tape to pull away.

    The templates are NOT free - no purchas nessesary as she said in video. They are not expensive however

      You are correct. I created this video when I had a Craftsy store. Craftsy allowed for free items in your store. They switched hands and it all went a little screwy. I no longer have a Craftsy store. So I could no longer offer them for free. Etsy will not allow you to put anything on your store for free. However, there is a free 5” template set in my Facebook group Patterns by Amy Lynne. I apologize for any misinformation.
