  • The Clematis is one of the MOST popular bags online. Its rounded, chunky shape makes it completely adorable, and its size makes it useful for many different purposes. This is a great bag for a night out, cosmetics, craft supplies... you name it! It's a beginner level bag, but I highly encourage you watch a TH-cam tutorial (many options online) if you are a true beginner, as the pattern can be confusing.

It makes sense to me to sew vinyl-side up for two reasons: First, as you pointed out, the vinyl can be sticky and may not move as easily against the plate as he cotton will. The second reason has to do with something you run into a lot in garment sewing: Whenever you have a fabric that you may possibly need to “ease” onto another (i.e., when it seems like there is “more fabric” for one piece than another and you have to “fit” it onto the seam and come out even), the fabric that needs to be eased is always placed against the feed dogs of your sewing machine. Although these pieces are cut to come together precisely, getting all the cotton into the curve seems a little easier when it’s against the feed dogs, especially since you know the vinyl is not going to give.

My fav blue calla pattern is the crocus. I’ve been making it for years. But the pattern is definitely hard to understand. I finally made the clematis in clear vinyl without using instructions since I am a more seasoned sewer. Beginners beware. Thanks for creating and sharing video tutorials. 😊

I do not understand why a pattern designer would not be more than happy to have someone willing to do an online tutorial for their pattern. It helps the DIY community as well as boost sales for the the company. Silly, truly 😊
On a completely different note, your hair is so cute at shoulder length!! Adorable❤

OMG your hack about glueing the faux leather to the fabric really is a game changer❤️ I had images of all kinds of yucky puckering sewing the vinyl the original way. I glued the sucker right down, topstitched and I was amazed. Thank you! Awesomeness👏👏👏

Wow! You are an excellent instructor. You are beyond good. I bought a singer 9960 about 4 years ago. I’ve mended a few things. That’s about it. I’ve regretted buying it because aside from straight line projects like tables cloths, I’m easily confused and never thought I could make anything. Other tutorials have left me feeling extremely inadequate. I know I could follow you. I am watching and I just know I can do this. Because your teaching method is so precise. You are a gift to the world. This is one of those TH-cam channels where you absolutely NEVER skip the ad. It would be criminal to do so. You put your heart and soul into your work. Thank you. I’m going to continue browsing your channel for the perfect starting project.

Great tutorial Jess! When you sew often, It's hard to remember what you didn't know as you started sewing. This tutorial does a good job of explaining what to do at every step. I was either amazed by both "what I learned" plus remembering "what I knew & forgot"
The Clematis was one of the first patterns I tried when I started making bags a few years ago. It also was my first time sewing curves together. I unintentionally made my "learning curve" easier by using (discard grade) black canvas pants for the bottom pieces...(I was thinking this was my "muslin")
The used canvas fabric yielded easily when sewing curves, and was helpful for me to learn this skill/concept. (Which made me braver when sewing more expensive materials like cork or vinyl.) The "muslin" I made is still one of my favorites, and that pair of pants has yielded many great gifts.
Looking forward to your new tutorials.

    • @OklaRoots
      @OklaRoots  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi there JB! That is such a great idea, to use canvas as the bottom! I think I've just gotten so used to vinyl! vinyl! vinyl! that I forgot how wonderful canvas is for the base of bags. And man would that be easier with these curves! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

Thank goodness for this video. Found your channel last week after I had made a simple lined draw string bag for inside a Nantucket basket purse and new covers for my vintage Bermuda bag. Thought I was invincible…until this clematis pattern. I have not tried vinyl yet so used some leftover material that has been around forever. Everything was easy until those darn darts! Even without vinyl I had some thick seams that my old Bernina activa 135 S struggled over. Far from perfect but it was fun. Think I will start your mystery box subscription until I gain some confidence. Thanks again for what you do.

Thank you for the tutorial. I have sewn many many bags but I got stuck also. When it came to the darts I sewed the first one but it looked funny so I decided to look for a video. I have sewn darts before but it's been awhile. I originally sewed along the angle, not straight up and down but, as I said, I knew something wasn't right. I also appreciate your time stamps; especially since I was so far in. I also want to watch your tips at the end.

Curves don't scare me, so the first option was the best in my opinion because I'm not crazy about exposed edges. I did try to watch Debbie Hunkers tutorial, but she over does the explaining of every little thing that it just drove me crazy trying to watch it...I think you did a much better job in my opinion. You get to the point quickly, and I like that a lot... Great Job! This looks like an amazing wristlet that I am going to have to try..Thank you!

Awww thank you Karen! It can be very challenging trying to give enough information, but not too much. And I totally resort to Debbie's videos for help! She is such a pro.

Jess! Amazing Tutorial! I love it and I agree that your methods on the vinyl change is ideal, especially for beginners! I'm gonna have to give this bag a try - your way. :) Keep em coming! I'm yet to sew a bag, zipper pouch but as soon as I get my sewing area cleaned up and organized, I'll be on my way.

Hi jess, I love your tutorials and appreciate that you take into consideration beginners. For future video content, I would like to request a video on: 1) references (books, videos, tutorials, etc.) that you found useful as a beginner, 2) bag patterns that you would recommend for beginners and things that we should be wary of in patterns, as a beginner. Thank you so much for your videos. I have been getting the sewing bug since I've been watching you and now I'm itching to try my hand at bag making.

Hi Jess, the tutorial on the Clematis bag pattern was not totally clear. The area I had an issue with was whether I topstitch with or without the lining. My first bag came out ok by reading the pattern. The second one came out awesome by looking at your beautiful tutorial on the Clematis bag..... Amen for Jess OklaRoots. I just love you.

one thing that you can do with the strap is use double sided tape to fold the edge of the strap toward the middle of the strap lengthwise and it will hold it down until you sew through the strap on each side. That way you will have an under side and an outer side of the strap ,but your strap is great also.

I remembered two other things I discovered when making other bags, that might be useful here. One, I found that my 1/4” foot is great for topstitching next to a zipper! I let the 1/4” guide run along the zipper teeth, and get a nice consistent line of topstitching. The other is working with the seams of the exterior/accent piece and the seams at the top by the zipper. I get twitchy if those don’t match up perfectly. Now I match up each of those places, and baste a bit over the match. It is easy to flip to he right side to see how they line up, and just that small amount of basting is easy to rip out. When they look good, then I can stitch around the whole thing much more quickly.

You know how much I love your tips, Kris! I'm writing all of these down. I'm not sure I have a good quarter inch foot, need to look into that. Thank you thank you!

Ok 😊 I sit at the machine and sew and pause 😏 Made one bag, and then made another a few days later. I am suggesting that on your videos, you make sure your front are back fabric are visibly different. For some reason, on the second one i made I just could NOT get it.. on the second side... I picked it out 3 times 🤷‍♀️ finally got it, but I thought, if the white fabric was clearly different on the wrong side, that would have made it easier, at least for me... don’t know what it was that tripped me up so much this time, but the white fabric is white on either side.. so just a suggestion 😊.
Love the tutorial videos, I started with the grocery tote type bag and have made 12 or so of those, eventually added inside pockets and sunglass/phone pocket on the outside. Planning on making more of the video bags also, I know it will eventually get better, but I sure had an issue today 😩
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos for everyone, they really are sooo helpful, and encourage you to make things you’ve not attempted before! 😊. And.. lol 😏 my yellow mechanical pencil is now always referred to as my “French” pencil 😊
