The Negative Impact of Observing Thoughts in Meditation and Self-Inquiry

  • In this episode of Enlightenment Today, I will explain how observing our thoughts in meditation and self-inquiry can have a negative impact on our life if we don't have the correct knowledge to practice correctly. A common habit in meditation and self-inquiry is people begin to demonize thoughts, creating a divide within themselves based on the hunt for the perceived enemy of the ego, which causes an artificial split within the mind. This can lead to numerous mental health issues. A lot of this bad meditation habit comes down to how we project our indoctrinated beliefs of right and wrong onto thoughts that naturally arise during practice. This is against the nature of meditation and self-inquiry.

The trick is to 'witness' not 'analyse'. Because analysis is an activity of the mind (driven by ego). Mind is like a baby and thoughts are its cries. You don't demonize a baby's cries, but you want to get rid of them in a nice non harmful way.

LOVE THIS! I also had to let go of my Christian upbringing. That judgmental thinking almost destroyed me...literally. Thanks for such a great explanation of walking the middle way with self-inquiry.

Well, now, there is one thing you said with which I must take exception. I live alone in a forest in Montana and have a computer. In fact, thanks to a government boondoggle, I have fiber optics. So, I get to know what's going on in the world but don't have to live in it. How great is that? Been here 18 years and it's been the best tie of my life.

The GREAT thing I learnt in this this discourse is that the mind will keep presenting thoughts good or bad they are not generated by me. It is their nature, like clouds in the sky.
Most important you mentioned that even a realised soul has thoughts, only they Don't cling on to them.
I habitually judge myself by my thoughts that I will try to stop now.
I hope I have understood right.
    Thank you Guruji, from India!

Hey Jason, thanks for your video, very good reminder for jnana based paths. I found myself automatically moving away from analyzing vrittis when I understood how to use them to go to their source and then observing the klesas, which are soul based. Thoughts as simple tools is sth that should be taught more I reckon. Cheers

"To sin is to miss the point".
It was impossible for me to approach Christianity, strangely the approach of understanding had to begin with Buddhism first. I've since learned through the words of an enlightened mind that Christianity still aims the practitioner towards non-dualism.
"Seek first the kingdom. The Kingdom of God is within you", to find nirvana, one must go within themselves, meditate, let go of their thoughts/opinions "go into your house, carry no leven"
Christianity points to the same destination. However the exoteric language is too strong, and the dogmatic institution of the church falls flat in it's transmission. The esoteric principles, and the teachings of Christ (Krishna) are there within the bible, and within the gnostic texts.
With enough reading/study, the same themes emerge within any 'spiritual' practice.
Here's a list of ten things to fall back on when it gets heavy, rough or confusing:
    1) Meditate & silence the mind.
    2) Let go of attachment to material things. Do not detach entirely from life and living, because that's where it's at, and where you are.
    3) Don't force things: opinions, actions, developments. Nothing is ever as pressing as it seems.
    4) Stay present.
    5) Alleviate suffering where it can be alleviated, accept suffering where it cannot be alleviated. Only alleviate the suffering that you feel called to alleviate. Do not meddle in the affairs of others if it isn't your place.
    6) Don't close down your natural wakefulness/intuition/3rd eye.
    7) Resist temptations/desires where they can be resisted, both carnal/material, and spiritual. Have patience for them where they cannot be. Do not deny them when they are natural or wholesome. Learn to discern and understand the difference.
    8) Accept that you're caught in a game of being a monkey pretending to be a God, and a God dreaming that it's a monkey. You're human in the linear, material, 3rd dimensional sense, this condition is existentially confusing. Don't act like a God, people won't like you. Don't act like a monkey, people won't like you. Act like a Monkey-God and people will like you because this is funny! Life is controlled folly. Confused? Good! It becomes less confusing when you go back to step one.
    9) You are that. That is you. You are called "I am". You create your own reality, you attract what you set in motion. An inquiry, a thought, a polarity within, will attract a situation externally as an answer. You are what you do, it is what it is, it is what does you, you are what does it.
    10) Flow with the experience of life. If it brings joy, then smile, if it brings sorrow, then cry, if it brings anger then scowl. Do not scowl whilst happy, do not smile whilst filled with sorrow, do not cry over your anger, scowl while you must, then let it go.

I use self enquiry whenever I can. I appreciate your warning. Mostly I use it to simply feed the thoughts back to the source. I know it's not meant to judge the quality of my thoughts which can at times be quite poor. But rather a way to abide in the self. A work in progress I assure you. I do find myself judging which is NOT Bhagavan's intention. Good and bad will come in meditation and self enquiry. I've practicing for about a year so ya I think I'll cut myself some slack and relax. Great advice.

Really Kevin I'm so judgmental of my thoughts.... I want to be a better person, like equality of love for All without any special person and so on.
Guru Jason has clarified that the thoughts are not me they happen even with enlightened people. Wow really Wow, that was great learning for me.
Peace Shanti, to you and your family from India.

In my view, I had to let go of that Christian view that all humans are sinful. And guilt is like a virtue in my religion. Dualism hasn’t really done a lot of favors y’know.

I think at the heart of Christianity is letting go of guilt because God literally died for your sins. I think guilt is more of a people thing than a Christian one

David Hawkins said that if we are going to sincerely follow the spiritual path and let go of our ego we need to let someone know so that when we do go insane, that person we told will be there to help us through our losing of our mind So, aren't we supposed to go off the deep end,if we truly want to follow the path of cleaning our minds?

Good perceptions Jason. I finally found peace with Taoisim about 4 years ago. Before that I tried different types of meditations. Some worked some didn't. I wonder what you think of Mantras. I know people who swear by them, but I found them agitating. What are your thoughts on mantra meditations? Thanks

    • @JasonGregoryAuthor
      @JasonGregoryAuthor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Funny you should mention mantras brother. Next Wednesday's episode is about what mantras are useful. I hear ya about mantras. Some of them can be too much stimulation rather than calming. I like some mantras, but they are usually the ones that are more simple and bring equanimity to the mind. Often is the case that the most simple mantras are the most powerful. Keep an eye out for next Wednesday's video.

Should we prevent us thinking about our good and bad memories during meditation?

    • @JasonGregoryAuthor
      @JasonGregoryAuthor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Great to hear from you Tanveer. Meditation is not about trying to prevent thoughts. It is about trying to come back into resonance with your natural pure awareness, which is the essence of our mind. To do that we need to notice anything that distracts us from the present moment, including any mental activity and our unconscious way of thinking. So thoughts are like any other phenomenon that can distract us from the immediate moment. After years of meditation the stream of thoughts will slow down and lose their influence over you. That doesn't mean you won't think, thinking is not the enemy. It just means your identification with thoughts has diminished, especially unnecessary thoughts. Thoughts will always naturally arise, but they will lose their power over you though meditation. That happens when we allow them to pass like clouds rather than always judging them emotionally based on our own personal conditioning. Hope this helps.

It would be easy to just pack a bag and headed to the mountain to have pure thoughts and not be influenced by social media, what's on the news etc. But that's a wishful thinking,I learned nit to condemned any thoughts of mine but understand it and make friends with it, although it is still difficult for me to scroll on Facebook and see post of other people I knew, the fakeness of it all triggered the fakeness in me, I'm still processing my fakeness 😊understanding what's the roots of it, that any fakeness on people triggered something inside of me, so I avoided Facebook, unlike TH-cam I can search what I want to see and avoid unnecessary vedio that will drain my energy.

A sheep has no mind of its own. No fish has a personality (ego) a mind to agree or disagree, no thinking allowed, just do it....... as the selfish gene dictates. It is also a very peaceful state because one does not need to decide too often , just go with the flow wu wei . If we have only logic ...life becomes boring...dull ...without ..passion. Its ok to be be angry sometimes. Its ok to be sad or joyful , happy or regretful. Humans also have .. .. bucket loads....of... beauty, of love , of hope and of freedom...... A robot has digital logic which helps it decide, but it has no personality, no passion , no imagination , no life.
Therefore I propose that humans exist somewhere in the middle of "sheep" and "robots" .and between "microbes" and "Gods". A modern philosopher ,Tim Freke has an interesting thought about humans being UNIVIDUALS. Read his book "Soul Story"
