Is the Self an Illusion? | The Five Aggregates of Buddhism (Skandhas)

  • In this episode of Enlightenment Today I will speak about whether the self actually exists. I will explore this from the perspective of the the five aggregates of Buddhism, especially the Madhyamaka and Yogacara schools. People often assume Buddhist beliefs are built on the idea that the self (ego/persona) is a persistent illusion, but this is not entirely true because it is much more complicated than that unfounded belief. The five aggregates are actually an advanced mind science centered on how the self is developed and, as a result, why the illusion of a self is based on a cognitive error we all make before waking up (nirvana).

The way you explained about the "I" being an illusion made sense this time. Thank you for explaining it clearly and simple.

Thank you for presenting a quite informative and well-paced video overall, though I personally may have some issues as a Buddhist my self with how the Buddhist concept of Self is presented when it comes to questions such as independence, anatta, anattman, atman and so on. But in general a very good video.

I knew I would get a good answer to my blank when I saw Buddha to your right and Ramana Maharshi on your left. To me Advaita Vedanta rings true but seemed to contradict Buddhism around the notion of Atman. But Buddhism simply does not concern itself with Atman/Brahman and therefore is a vital addition to Advaita Vedanta. I also like the rigor in Buddhism to dispel the ego rather than to simply inquire about the I thought.

    Enjoyed your video, good stuff.
Just a shout out to a similar way of talking about "I ing" is Paul Hedderman's use of the term "selfing" ... (Paul has many videos on TH-cam that point to selfing)

You mentioned that the 5 aggregates are what make up a person. The 5 aggregates are what make up experience. All of reality is experience. Experience has 5 categories of properties: form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness.

    I enjoyed your discourse.
The ‘egotistical self’ and its defilements are predominantly the result of both learnt attitudes and behavioural mannerisms acquired during our social development. The ‘Five Aggregates of Clinging’ relate simply to our anatomy and physiology. The ‘egotistical self’ and the ‘Five Aggregates of Clinging’ must logically act collectively for our very survival in our respective domains, and therefore in actuality rather than any illusionary view, they collectively represent the ‘self’. The issue is not with the ‘egotistical self’ nor with the ‘ Five Aggregates of Clinging’ as such, but with the nature of the acquired defilements. These can be modified using mindfulness and meditation techniques.

Nice video, but it concentrates mostly in the skandas in and of themselves, when Vijnana is specialised knowledge of jnana, or insights into consciousness separates from the other four skandas. They sometimes and most often get translated from the unenlightened point of view, when in fact the suttas and abhidharma are explaining from the enlightened point of view. Meaning we cant really understand the suttas or abhidharma from the ascent, its understood via the descent of the Buddha into the citta.
Avidya avijja can not solve its own problem, due to not enough space to see the whole picture, it needs space, space or akash is of a conscious space, not external space.
I do admire anyone that makes more knowledge accessible to end the false teaching that Buddha Dharma is seperate or opposed to Vedanta. Big Thumbs up

An illusion is something comprehended by a self, therefore to be able to perceive an illusion there must be a subject, object relationship between the self and the objective illusion that is perceived. This makes for a difference between the two therefore the self can't be an illusion and an illusion can't be the self. An illusion is something experienced and an experience is something that can affect a self positively or negatively so the knower ( self ) is even different from what is experienced.

Atman= Buddha nature. Anatman = what Buddha nature is not. Atman is not denied by Buddha. Personally, I think that you made it unnecessarily complicated.

In the section where you make use of a chart, your Pali and Sanskrit pronunciations are embarrassingly incorrect and confused. I strongly suggest you re-edit that section.
