How do we use the Schroth Method with Kyphosis?

  • The Schroth Method is normally associated with scoliosis treatment, but it is also a great way to treat Kyphosis! Actually, I think kyphosis even responds better to Schroth training than scoliosis and this conservative treatment should be provided more often.
Please DO NOT just do these at home! Every Kyphosis patient is different, and you should be assessed and then instructed by a Schroth trained Physical Therapist!

Scheuermann's kyphosis responds very well and can help to stop and even reverse progression of the curve. This helps to reduce tension and pain and improve posture and the look of the spine.
You can see more information on Kyphosis treatment by going to our website at aligntherapyutah.com/kyphosis/

    Hi,
Could you do a video on hypokyphosis and if Schroth can help this? There is very little info on loss of thoracic curves. I have it, and have gone into a swayback posture (hips forward, upper body tilting backwards. I have mild scoliosis so the ortho doctor dismissed me. But the loss in curves causes pain, strain and fatigue, muscle imbalance, not just the rotation.

I have been in PT for my scoliosis for many months and not one PT had ever address my breathing as part of my therapy. I t is very hard to find a PT that actually specialize in scoliosis. they will work with a person but never really explain. My confidence in during my home excercising is very low. So I tend to not do them. I don't know if I am doing the excercise correct. Thank you for your videos. I will share this with my PT and Chiropractor.

Really to do these exercises correctly you would need to be trained specifically by a Schroth Therapist. Once you are trained, this is to be done 5 days a week for 20-30 minutes a day.

Hello, I was wondering if you know how I could find a Schroth Therapist in Rhode Island? Also, I’ve read that dead hangs could be beneficial for elongating the spine with kyphosis. Do inversion tables provide the same results as a dead hang? Thanks.

    • @AlignTherapyUtah

Look up the Schroth Barcelona Institute's website. Inversion tables dont do as much as a hang. The hang teaches the body how to relax and breathe but the inversion table is too passive.

I practice the breathing method you talk about. I have Scheuermann's. Do you have any suggestions for my gym workouts? I do barbell squats and worry about whether it may impact my spine negatively. I am in my 30s and have a 55-60 degree cobb angle in my thoracic spine with ~5 wedged vertebrae, anterior bone spurs and Smorl's nodes. I practice yoga and/or martial arts every day. I have tried many exercises for kyphosis and traction, but I am not satisfied with the results. When I sit up straight I feel an uncomfortable compression in my right ribcage near my spine, where the bottom of the thoracic spine meets the upper lumbar. I would like to try Schroth method to improve this, but I live in Japan and can not find it here. Can you help?

I think I have POSTURAL kyphosis . Since it was started three years ago because of my sitting way of studing whole of the day + obesity , and I have been suffering from the big back pain . My standing position is like 2 or 3 hours , and I lay down on my bed all the day with a bad posture . I got a therapy for like 2 months but after that it cant work because of my laziness . now I have cervical pain too . I m very depressed what should I do. Should I am able to get rid from this kyphosis from doing back exercises which my therapist suggest me or by getting help from youtube?? what kind of this kyphosis pls tell me ..☹. In my test reports my uric acid level is above , doctor told me that because of my uric acid I have got this pain.

    • @AlignTherapyUtah

@@AlignTherapyUtah Ok... When I say adult, I don't mean young adult though. I'm 41. So much information out there seems to write off anyone beyond their late teens for any hope of reducing the curve, short of surgery of course, and my kyphosis isn't severe enough to be put forward for it. 10-15 degrees without surgery sounds too good to be true
