  • Why I Stopped Playing iRacing for GT7 and PSVR2 even though it's Not a "Real Sim" - I haven't really played iRacing in months since getting GT7 and PSVR2. GT7 while not as realistic as iRacing has a fun factor that just keeps you coming back for more. It just hooked me in the first time I tried it after Sony released PSVR2. It's not that PSVR2 itself offered more then other VR headsets, it is that GT7 is just a real amazing game in VR. I will only race sims in VR so up until a few months ago, I have never tried GT7. So while PSVR2 made me try GT7, the game was good enough to keep my coming back for more. As it's been told many times over, iRacing will give you the most realistic racing experience but does that necessarily mean it will be the most fun game or the right choice for you? Let's discuss it.

    I've taken the same path my friend. iRaced for 3 years before finding the joy of GT7 and VR. The experience is so good it convinced me to upgrade to a DD wheel and move from my desk to a proper rig. I finally got lens inserts and now there just aren't enough hours in the day. I really like the GT7 sport race arrangement and how you can just keep improving your qualify times during the week and really master a track. I'll go back to iRacing when I need my oval fix. But this suits me perfectly for now.

That along with the simplicity of getting into an online race in a matter of minutes after booting up my PS5 is awesome. Another thing I like about GT7 is that I can create a quick race against the AI at anytime or even do the arcade racing if I don't have the time to spend online. GT7 has reinvigorated my passion for sim racing. Yeah, I don't like the ghosting of the cars either, but that a minor gripe for such a great game. Keep the awesome videos coming Cas! I totally agree. GT7 VR graphic fidelity, especially the lighting, adds so much to the immersion factor. While iRacing’s visuals are a bit outdated, it does look impressive at a solid 90 or 120Hz and a high SS rate. Mic setup sugestion: You've got a popper-stopper, and that's great for getting rid of any pops from plosive consonants like P, T, D etc., but you have it touching the windscreen, which it most definitely should not be doing. You are completely negating the benefit the popper stopper provides. Any plosive effects of air from your mouth hit the popper stopper screen but are 100% transferred to the windscreen (black foam directly hugging the end of the mid) & mic. You need to put maybe at least a 1" gap between the two. Also, a windscreen is for reducing noise from wind... how much wind is there in your room? Probably zero, so you can try ditching the windscreen altogether & just keep the popper stopper (again, not letting its screen mesh touch the mic at all). You don't have a rubber band type shockmount for the mic to attach to, so any plosive energy the popper stopper picks up is still transferred through where the popper stopper attaches to your boom, but it's better than not having a popper stopper at all (as long as its screen is not touching the mic head). You can google if there is a rubber band shockmount made for your mic. If so, definitely get that. No one would probably notice or care about pops listening on their computer/laptop or some earbuds, but they will most definitely notice if they watch your videos on their entertainment system with largeer speakers or with a sub woofer. Love the content!

    Great video. Of all your comments the ones which hit home are regarding qualifying and damage.
    in GT7's Manu and Nations races there is a 5-minute qualifying. I LOVE watching streams in which a good driver stuffs up his qualifying, but has to fight his way through the pack, for instance.
    Re damage, yeah, the ghosting is something I wish didn't exist, but I can understand it makes the game more accessible. Most of all, like you, I wish proper and permanent damage was at least on one or two dailies, perhaps the endurance races.
    I-Racing has my respect as a proper sim, but when I see some of the antics that happens in the racing - dirty driving, tactics, etc - then I'm turned off by the win-at-all costs. The fun ain't there.

    It is what it is. Back in the day I played in a proper racing league that had all the realistic stuff: you would grind a good time during 1-2 weeks (including fine tuning car setups for qualifying and race) which would be your "inscription time", and would be used to make several pools of drivers based on that time for the actual race. Then in the race we would have a 15 minute qualifying, a short break and then a 45-60 minute race, which sometimes included a mandatory pitstop. Pitstopping was all manual, no ghosting, grid start, penalty system with a panel of race marshalls that would review every incident after the race (they were racers so couldn't do it on the fly). Also, we had teams of up to 20 people, but usually teammates were scattered through different pools, so you usually had 3-5 teammates in your same pool, all communicating through TeamSpeak during the race. It was very cool, independently of your skill level and the level of realism the sim provided. But, on the other hand, it required a lot of time, effort and involvement. I would like to experience that level of "seriousness" again, the feeling is quite different to that of racing in public races in GT7 sport mode. But, GT7 is jusy simple, you just go and race. I actually kind of like and understand why GT7 works this way in sport mode, rolling starts, temporary damage and ghosting, they are all measures that are implemented to prevent dirty drivers in public lobbies from ruining other people's races. Even the slow-down penalty system, it's kinda ok for quick public races. In the end, it's a casual game. Maybe I'll try looking for some of those "private leagues" at some point 👍🏼

    • @thecasualracinggamer
      @thecasualracinggamer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't want to take anything away from iRacing here. It also can be quite simple to hop into a race and not require hours a week to get enjoyment out of it. The lower license races are short and last about 15 minutes. There is usually like a 5 minute qual to run 2 laps and 3 minute practice session.

    • @mkcristobal
      @mkcristobal ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thecasualracinggamer I'm not saying that either, I don't know iRacing, never tried it. What I'm saying is that GT7 often gets quite a lot of hate from people saying it's not realistic or it's full of dirty drivers and such, and I don't think any of that is true, or not at least to the point that it might completely break your experience driving. Also, single player mode is cool. Sometimes I just do the cafe menus or some other non competitive mission to have a more relaxed driving session, not having to worry about other people.

    I am not a pro racer but I do track my car non competitively. I got into sim racing recently and got a whole fanatec setup. I use console so my options are limited. Once I got a VR2 for my PS5 it changed everything. Part of the fun is getting into the different cars that I will never own or drive. A lot of the physics and handling of the cars is pretty realistic, but I hate how the other cars are so quick to run into me. That said, I don't know why every racing game doesn't have VR support. Like if this is how the game is then it shouldn't have a subscription system in the first place. It drives away people who would otherwise love to play the game and even spend money on the different tracks and cars but the sub is just over the line for me especially since there are very good competitors for iRacing such as ACC for example. Its weird to say, but they would probably make more money by making the game a fixed price game... and AC 2 is coming next year so... buckle up.

      Yeah, iRacing pricing is unfortunate. I wonder if they do this to keep it's users to a certain level of sim racers where someone not so serious or even kids just wouldn't pay these fees to play. So you kind of limit your users to a certain level of player. Just a guess here besides them just wanting to make as much money as they can.

I’ve been playing gran turismo since its inception on ps1. Once it came out on ps2 I was able to get my first thrustmaster steering wheel, and then I was truly hooked! The online elements of people are the problem without real track enforcement. AI just can’t seem to get the penalty system right. Where as on iRacing I believe you do have track monitoring. • @thecasualracinggamer
      @thecasualracinggamer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no track monitoring in iRacing if you mean it as a real person watching. You can protest other drivers and iRacing does review the footage and enforces the rules and will ban and take action against any driver purposely causing havec. For just unskilled moves they will usually take action letting the person know what they should be doing. I personally have never reported anyone. I would maybe only do it if someone intentionally did something but not for driving mistakes even it might have ruined my day.

  • @efenba
    @efenba ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wont call this a "mistake" from your review, but you said something that is not exactly correct, something that lots of people say (and think) about GT that kinda diminishes it, and prevents people from enjoying in its fullest:
    When you talked about damage, you said "GT is a simcade so there is no damage and risk". That is true for Sport Mode (Dailies and GTWS), but GT does have a "permanent damage setting". I know its not as detailed as iRacing, but when its on, it can really ruin your race, as you described for iRacing. But usually PD doesnt turn this on cause its a more casual game, and not because its a simcade like you said. Same with Ghosting: you can disable it.
    So when did you get to use this feature? In lobbies. And lots of people think lobbies is something not serious, so they never race there, only in sports mode. And by doing so they never get to know this side of GT, this more serious, more risky, the races with "hardcore" (yeah I know its not close to other games...) settings.
    Yes, lots of lobbies are 4fun. But in lobbies you also have private leagues. Serious leagues. Race with hardcore settings. Races without almost no dirty drivers. IMO lots of people dont get to know fully what GT gives us until they experience (good) lobbies.

    • @thecasualracinggamer

Not sure how active most of the public lobbies are though. Anytime I have peaked they looked kind of empty. Of course if you race in private leagues that can great. As for full damage, can you go into the pits and do repairs where it would actually take a while to fix depending on how bad it is?

    • @efenba
      @efenba ปีที่แล้ว

      @thecasualracinggamer yes, damage won't repair until you pit. Different parts of the car take different times to repair, and have different effects on your car while damaged. Rear wing as example drops your top speed, and let's say, takes 2sec to repair. Wheel damage literary makes your racing wheel push to one side, takes, let's say, 3sec. So the more you damaged your car, the biggest the effect, and the longer the time to fix it. Sometimes you have a 30 laps race, and if you damage your car in lap 1, you have to pit because you lose so much time that you are obligated to pit. Sometimes you can keep racing with damage. And sometimes you fix your car partially. And there is the almighty "engine damage" that limits your speed to 60kmh, so you are almost always obligated to pit. That one is specially cool if you get it in the start of a lap in a circuit like Nordschleife. The 7 min lap time goes to 20 min, it's pretty "fun".

    • @efenba
      @efenba ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I lost the 3th place in a league (and lost the trophy), after 2 months, 8 races, because a guy hit me and damaged my car. I lost like 4s in that lap (cause of the incident and the slower lap until the pit), plus 8s fixing my car. It was pretty frustrating, but in the end was kind my fault for trying to overtake him in the lap 2, when we still had 7 laps remaining (race had few laps cause it was Le Mans). So you have to be really careful in those kind of races with damage on (in leagues you usually can submit penalty requests after races, so no, people don't abuse this, au contrary)

    You know, speaking of iRacing,
    iRacing and Monster Games (Monster Games were the original creators of the NASCAR Heat series, even the good old NASCAR Dirt to Daytona before iRacing bought them out) had made a game if you're a casual simcade racer called World of Outlaws: Dirt Racing.
    And WoO: Dirt Racing is a really fun simcade racing game trying to compete with NASCAR Heat 5, and Gran Turismo 7 based around obviously World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars, World of Outlaws Case Construction Equipment Late Models, DIRTcar 305, and 360 Sprint Cars, DIRTcar Street Stocks, DIRTcar Pro Late Models, DIRTcar UMP Modifieds, and Super DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds.
    They've also just announced an Xtreme Outlaw Midget Sprint Cars along with some new tracks most notable one on iRacing is the Chili Bowl Nationals.
    Along with a 2023 DLC, and Season Pass for World of Outlaws.
    Really fun dirt oval racing game, I'd suggest that if you love racing on dirt.

    I wanted some type of sim to improve and keep up with racing skills during the off season. All the hardware you need for iRacing was a lot more than I wanted to spend on considering I’ve ready spent a lot with my real car prepping it. PS VR and GT7 for me was the next best thing and you don’t need a ton of money to get started. Racings rigs are nice with the curved screens but I think wearing the VR headset gives a more realistic look and feel of being in the car. It’d be nice if there was a decent priced seat and haptic system to use with GT7 to make it feel even more realistic.

It's my opinion, but most simulation games are boring because they're similar. Driving the same car on the same track is boring. I want simcade games like Project Gotham Racing, Driveclub or arcade games like Ridge Racer, Midtown Madness. I want to enjoy the game like a game. iRacing is an overall fully realistic sim that offers a more real racing experience . GT7 does have more arcade type things to it but still keeps some realistim to it. You can learn to drive the same car in either game but does require a different driving technique in each. Which is more realistic? No clue, I don't drive race cars, but pro drivers do use iRacing to train, so I guess that says something for realism. Does it make GT7 any less of a game or sim? @@Joe.484 Yeah, makes no sense to me. Hopefully they didn't just abandon the VR part of things. It's possible they could be working on a VR update and maybe they want to roll everything out at once instead of piece mealing the VR fixes. Let's hope that is the case.

    How is I racing with the penalties?
    Because in Gran Turismo people can run into you and you'll get a penalty.
    It really turned me off in Gran Turismo sport I haven't really played competitive online since then.

    • @thecasualracinggamer
      @thecasualracinggamer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's different in iRacing. No matter who's fault when cars hit, both drivers lose points. It's a no fault system. Also, there is real damage so worse then a penalty, you see risking damage to your car that will effect you the rest of race and might cause you to need a pit stop to repair.

    I don't play iracing either but assetto corsa competitizione. Assetto corsa and automobilista 2 are much more fun. It's like gt7 fun but actually a real sim. So even though I started with gt7 nothing can make me go back again coz of how basic and numb the feedback and physics is. It feels like a game kids would love playing thinking it's a simulator but it's not. It's just a game. Hence why more people play it

      @pengo2727 I know I played last month too...and I used a logitech g pro dd wheel which improved the experience a lot but still not quite the levels I wanted...it's so easy to be world class in gt7 it's not even funny compared to the titles I mentioned. Most of all it's the simplicity of the physics that I couldn't get over in comparison

    • @thecasualracinggamer

      The problem I have with ACC is the PCVR implementation is terrible and I just can't race anymore outside of VR. So VR for me needs to be implemented and implemented good. AMS2 is a great game but lacks great online play. It's good if your looking for AI racing.
