While Mickey Rooney's Potato Fantasy never existed (sadly, this is a parody ad), I had the pleasure of living near one of Mickey's misbegotten businesses. When I was a young lass growing up on Long Island, NY, Mickey opened a branch of his Weenie World business near my house. Ate there a few times and while it wasn't totally terrible for your average hot dog & fry place, the wacky thing about it was the venue. He took over the lease on a joint called Space Burger, or some such - it was shaped like a giant space ship, had mannequins dressed as astronauts hanging from the ceiling, the trash cans were robots and thanked you for throwing your garbage in them, and in general, it was like eating in a giant silver dumpster. When Mickey took it over, he did absolutely NO renovating or redecorating, just rebranding. Imagine eating substandard hot dogs (in Nathan's territory, no less) inside a shabby, abandoned UFO from the wrong side of the tracks with Mickey Rooney's face all over everything. It didn't last long, and shortly thereafter was torn down and replaced by a Pizza Hut or a bank, if I recall correctly. Poor Mickey.

Nuthin' but taters? Robo-trash cans? Mickey Rooney face on everything? What does it say about me that I'm super into this? Also, super disappointed that Potato Fantasy is nothing but a dream. 😞😭🙅

Spencer Tracy, Ernest Borgnine, and Frank Sinatra (The Man With The Golden Arm) were all nominated for the same award along with James Cagney and James Dean. 1955 was one hell of a year for acting.

I've never seen "Catch Me If You Can", but I have seen the real version of the opening scene - the actual episode of To Tell The Truth. It includes some great anecdotes about his escapades, but the best part, without a doubt, was right after he stood up, when the votes were split between the other two, and Nipsey Russell gave one of the best lines in 70s TV. "He fooled the doctors and the lawyers and the bankers, what chance did we have?"

Saw this in my high school film-studies class (back in the 80's!) and didn't have enough perspective to appreciate the story fully. It's great to see it again through fresh eyes, especially in today's climate (making it sadly more relevant). Thanks for the rediscovery.

I've a very special place in my heart for this movie. When my wife and I got our first satellite TV box we had to wait 24 hours until it was activated, all that was available on it was a few Freeview channels and TCM. BD@BR was the movie that was on on TCM so that was the very first satellite program we watched...And it was excellent! ...And that's my boring story. :)

The lesson I learned from BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK: Don't be paranoid and fearful bullies when you have a bigger crime to hide you isolationist idiots! I didn't say it was a good lesson.
Dark comedy aside, I think this is a great film featuring some sadly all-too-real villains: bigoted and shallow reactionaries who harmed and murdered an innocent for an unrelated slight. Self-fulfilling prophecy is an accurate way to explain the villains' defeat. Spencer Tracy is also an understated bad-ass in this one.

I watched this review when it was new and then stumbled on it again just now. Since it’s one of my favorite ‘50s movies, I was surprised I forgot you guys did this one. Maybe I was disappointed Matt didn’t love it like I do. As a matter of fact, I prefer the early mystery half of the movie than the later action scenes. Oh well, at least we agree that “Rope” is one of Hitchcock’s best.

When I saw Rope I didn't notice the one-shot thing at all. When I learned about it later I thought "That's why it had those wierd shots of zooming in on people's backs!" Same story with Birdman. I think what matters is the quality of shots, not their length. I only notice the long ones when they are good - as the back-door-through-restaurant one in the Goodfellas.

Speaking of "Dial M" it's interesting seeing how Grace Kelly's character was treated in the movie. She seemed to be mostly there for sympathy, and didn't have much to her personality, (though still well acted I thought). Interesting to compare how female characters changed from then to now. Think they're a little critical of John Wick 2. It's not really setting out to be a masterclass in cinema. Craig says it's a fun movie to watch, and that's all it is. That's kind of what that movie is supposed to be. So in that sense, they succeeded. Plus, I can think of a lot of "fun action flicks to watch" that can't hold a candle to John Wick. In terms of those kinds of movies, John Wick stands above most of them.

Hi BlameSociety - I we reviewed this movie in college (cinema school), it was actually our semester's final - Each one of us had to take turn evaluating the producer, writers, storyboard, cinematography, sound, special effects, location, and acting... It was a work of love (and "love" is painful at times) - this was not an easy movie to review, especially since later on, in my military career - I had to deliver the "bad news" to some families.
My apologies if this parody of this classic touched some of us the wrong way, but may of us did endure our own "Bad Day(s) at Black Rock". I am sorry for the negative comments - I already had a bad day when I came across your video - no harm done, Ciao, L (Veteran)

video games are interactive. movies are directed. enough with false criticism. there is no way that a film can be "like a video game" or so much like a video game that the film becomes off putting to viewers.
matt like many other older film buffs cant handle a well choreographed action scene that's faster than two gunslingers at dawn or a beefcake toting a machinegun with one hand.
now its one thing to say that cg in a film looks fake like an old video game but people just call that bad CG.
next you know, matt will be watching a musical and will complain about it seeming too much like a broadway play.

I think everyone loves a well choreographed action scene, at least in part because it is extremely rare to see a truly memorable one. In any case I am confused by your response because neither Matt nor Craig criticised the film's action, they talked about the core concept not really working as it repeats that of the first film, and a break in the suspension of disbelief caused by the main character brushing off being hit by cars. In the past both Matt and Craig have lavished praise on films such as Ip Man, The Raid, and indeed the first John Wick. I don't think they are in any way down on action or martial arts films.

"I am confused by your response because neither Matt nor Craig criticised the film's action"
yes. they did. craig said "its basically a video game" a lame criticism given by those who do not like fast paced and choreographed action scenes.

matt replies with "i dont want to watch a videogame, i want to watch a movie". you cannot watch a video game. you either play it or watch someone play it. the game does not play itself and it was not designed to play by itself much like a movie does.
