One of the best lines in cinema "Not only are you wrong, you're wrong at that top of your voice"

The controlled deliberate doing of nothing that ratchets up the tension. That is a good description of this movie.

I've always assumed that it was filmed in some little dying Mojave Desert town. There's no trace of anything, not even the train tracks. I suppose now it all built for the movie. By the way, I absolutely ❤️ this film! The cast is incredible. Great story, great acting.

Hi Roberta, thanks for the kind comments, and thanks for your patience on the gun stuff! My expertise is in filmmaking, but I clearly didn't drill down enough learning the cap and ball material. Funny story, we tried to shoot me demonstrating how to load the replica - and it was an utter fiasco!

Wow, the field trip shots are spot on, well done!! Are the locations difficult to find? I intend to go to Lone Pine one day and would like to visit the Black Rock locations.

Great video. I am going to talk my wife into watching a western with me tonight (I am gradually moving her from the "modern western" like Justified to some of the classics). Thanks!

The film was really ahead of its time. Spencer Tracy the protagonist was a one armed veteran, well in his 50s, wearing a dark suit and no gun.
No looker, and not after any romance either.
The villains, guilty of murdering a Japanese immigrant who we never see was pretty bold as it was just 10 years after the war.
And of course, set in modern times with cars replacing horses.

Lone Pine is my favorite little town. Haven't been there in many years but it was serene at the base of Mt. Whitney and a stones throw from Death Valley. The eastern Sierra's are spectacular country.

Bad Day at Black Rock is one of the great movies that explored a Dark episode in American history. The movie was great because it depended on excellent actors and scripts, not on special effects.

It would be cool to visit that area if some remnants of the set were still there. As for the film, Robert Ryan did an amazing job as Reno Smith. In real life the man was a champion of civil rights and liberal causes, but he played bigoted characters with great skill.

  • @alec2726

Your last scene with Robert Ryan and Spencer Tracy shows you what acting is all about. Both were top actors but both plying to dominate the scene. I think Spencer did, sitting on a chair, looking down, whilst Robert Ryan was standing over him and acting! How good was that?
