    There was once a joke going around that Sinatra got beat up by Borgnine in From Here to Eternity, and Tracy beat Borgnine up for Sinatra in Bad Day at Black Rock, with one arm.

      "Any movement on the Walter Brennan takes?"
      "No, Jimmy, and it doesn't look good."
      "He look good to meee!"
      Sorry. My joke/Those lines are from Good Morning Vietnam and I couldn't help it. Peace, y'all!

    Railroads used to build small company towns along their right-of-ways to provide services for their crews. These tiny railroad towns would always have hotels.

    The film was based on a short story called "Bad Time at Honda" by Howard Breslin, published by The American Magazine in January 1947

    This is such a phenomenal film that I first learned about six or seven years ago at least when I was helping a customer out with groceries we were talking about older films and he recommended this one to me and when my shift ended I went home and downloaded the Watch TCM app and was amazed at it.
    Spencer Tracy was a great of cinema actors, but I like how similar to Jimmy Stewart he would normally play the everyday kind of person instead of larger than life type of roles. The kind of person you can look up to and strive to be.

    • @alexachipman
      @alexachipman  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Exactly - he is such a role model, but in an everyday “I can do this” sort of way.

    "Five of the cast members won a total of eight Oscars. Spencer Tracy had two, Walter Brennan had three and Dean Jagger had one. Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine would later win one apiece. (Robert Ryan was nominated for Crossfire (1947), but did not win.)"

    10:07 So glad you kept in my favourite bit where he finds out the extensive choices on the menu. Still gives me a chuckle every time I watch this classic. They seldom make films this good anymore...

    There's a great Tracy/Borgnine story regarding this movie and the movie Marty that's well worth the watch. If I remember correctly, Tracy encouraged Borgnine to either audition for or take the role of the titular Marty resulting in both actors being nominated for Best Actor and Borgnine winning.

    • @williamburnham3659
      @williamburnham3659 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, Borgnine actually auditioned for Marty whilst doing the role in Bad Day.
      The Story is that when he auditioned he was performing a minor role in a western ( I.e. Bad Day) and that he surprised the casting director with his range and emotional intensity, and that is how he got the role in Marty.

    This was one of several post-WWII films that were sort of a navel-gazing subgenre that examined the dark side of Americana after WWII. Other great ones include “Gentleman’s Agreement” (anti-Semitism), “Some Came Running” (small-town secrets, lies, and hypocrisy), and of course the many films that explored McCarthyism through various allegories, e.g., “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and “High Noon.” I think the underlying message was that now that America has helped vanquish evil overseas, it was time to examine our own backyard.
    Indeed, the tension was thick. Many of these films also examined the whole old-school, stoic manhood thing, which is why they didn’t “just ask” why he was there, further building the tension.

    The jeep was an actual relic of World War 2. 4 inch headlights and no tailgate. I bought one for $300, and it came with a machine gun mount.

    A great film that I only finally watched for the first time last year, also the only Spencer Tracy film I own. Lee Marvin played bad guys very well, even when they were the nominal hero as in Point Blank. A very atmospheric film and a joy to watch.

    Saw you had reacted to this months ago but avoided watching until I’d seen the film myself.
    Watched it last night & was very impressed.
    Did find a one-armed Spencer Tracy beating up Ernest Borgnine somewhat incongruous (to the point of comedy) & the 40 yard perfect Molotov cocktail chuck at the end was also a bit daft but neither really detracted from the great writing & dialogue, taut, menacing atmosphere, superlative performances, and brilliant location/cinematography.
    I also (wrongly) presumed (as I was watching) that it’d been adapted from a stage play.
    Great reaction as always 👍👍

    Great film. I love the range of movies that you review. One of Spencer Tracey's best! Everything he's been in feels like a play. I dig your niche catalogue so far, maybe (off topic) "who's afraid of Virginia Woolf" is kinda your typa film?

    I have loved this film my entire life and it is marvelous to see you watch it...or anyone...It is an icon I grew up hearing the phrase "a bad day at black rock" used as a euphemism for when things were going bad by design...and still use it. The short story was very well known as was the film to my grandparent's generation especially in the southeast. Alexa I would love to see you watch 2 films as I think you would provide the most amazing insight into them. if.... by Lindsey Anderson and Quadraphenia two of my favorite films, that I think you would appreciate.
