Hi Tom first of all can I just say I am in aww at how amazing you are at what you do for these dogs and there owners, my question is how do you find a good trainer or educator? I live in Scotland and have a one year old working cocker spaniel I lack in confidence when training mainly because I’m worried I’m doing it wrong and possible making things worse my boy is reactive and can sometimes show aggression, any advice would so much appreciated p.s your videos are amazing

There is a young woman / was a young woman with a large black GS at my local walking spot. One day she was pulling into the carpark, me and my dog the only living things around, and all I could see was her dog barking madly between the seats at my dog. She reversed the car and pulled over down the road. I left my dog in the car and went to see if she ok. The side of her face was red and she said she feared he was going to take her ear off. We talked for a bit about training suggestions, but every time I saw her after that she was still being dragged around by her dog who was still wearing a harness. I haven't seen her for some weeks now. I hope she, or someone else, wasn't injured.

Something I never put a lot of thought into. There are times when we are about to have company and we are cleaning or scrambling to get things in order. Our dog definitely notices the difference and seems to get tense herself. I probably need to be more cognizant of this.

@@patrickm7483 I've just recently talked to both a vet tech and a family member about dogs smelling changes in human body chemistry. We smell different, especially during heightened emotions. I know that my anxiety affected (especially) one of my prior dogs and certainly doesn't help my current dog, so I've already asked if we can do vet visits the way we have during the past year, and they were very receptive to the idea.
The weirdest thing for me is of I'm dealing with another person's dog or say a dog from a rescue that I'm transporting, I don't get the same anxiety. So my homework right now is taking the time to work through why that changed for me and how to get back to the way I was before, all so that I can be the great guardian my dog needs and deserves.

I agree . He let her know she was wrong . But that doesn't make her a bad dog owner . That's like calling someone a bad parent because they made a mistake . A bad dog owner leaves their dog in a hot car , or on a chain in the yard all the time . Or abuses the animal or starves it . A bad dog owner does not take their dog to a probably very exspensive dog trainer and spend hours trying to save the dog and other people . A bad dog owner would just get rid of the dog or have it killed . People love to judge others when they are doing something not right in their lives . That's all it is .

I can personally vouch for Tom's behaviour change methods. We fostered a rescue two weeks ago and he is very leash reactive and chokes himself out on the slip. All fear based reactions. I've watched almost every video on the channel and my herm sprenger 2.25 arrived today. I made sure I placed it correctly, secured a safety clip to his flat collar and oh my god. Different dog. He engaged with me, tail wagged and even wanted to play. He watched dogs nearby but didnt growl and looked like he was just interested in his surroundings rather than nose to the ground and thinking of me as a weight to be dragged. I cant wait to help him become a more confident, happy dog. Now if I can just get him to stop going totally bonkers at the doorbell.

As a German Shepherd owner, it’s quite sad to see so many dog owners that get these breeds and have no handle on their dogs. People really need to understand the type of dog they are getting and if they match up to a German Shepherd. This isn’t just a lap dog, it needs full training and not just sit and stay commands. You’re setting up yourself for failure, you’re setting up the dog for failure without understanding your own situation and who you are when getting picking this breed.

As a dog trainer myself specializing in working with aggressive behaviors and having run and rescued bully breeds and exotic mastiffs for over 20 years, I really enjoy watching you work and like your approach and techniques. You have a great presence, clear understanding of canine behavior, and it's obvious you're passionate about your work and helping dogs.
Your blunt honesty with the owner without sounding like you're scolding or talking down to her is very helpful and I admire your skills, I think I sometimes get frustrated with the owner if it just isn't sinking in and I that's not helping anyone, it's somethinog I need to work on. I have no trouble establishing relationship and communication with the dogs, dogs make sense to me, but the humans sometimes I just don't know about.

Thomas... of all your video content, I would rate this as among the top 5 most important, must watch videos. German Shepherds are a strong breed and can be *lethal* if the owner fails to be an assertive leader. Your patience and the owner’s desire to learn and modify their own body language and energy projection are key to a successful outcome.
Responsible dog ownership means learning about critical factors such as dog body language and needs for mental stimulation and exercise.

I really needed to see this...just last Sunday, my rescued Cane Corso yanked me off of my feet on a walk lunging after someone who was walking by on the other side of the road. She literally knocked the wind out of me, but I had a death grip on that leash knowing full well what she is capable of. I do use a hermspringer prong collar on her but I was totally devastated, and shaken to my core, so I was so angry I called my husband to come get her. I feel like a total failure. My husband keeps telling me that she is too protective of me and that she does not do this with him. We also have an e collar and had her at a trainers for 2 weeks and received a 10 minute training with her when we picked her up. I know now that this is certainly not ideal and was at the very least inadequate training and money wasted. I wish I knew you before we went there. I some how stumbled across your videos and became hooked. You have helped me so much but I have a lot of work to do.....Everything in this video is what I needed to hear and it is ringing in my ears very loudly. He loves all humans but if he sees an animal on walks he loses his mind, lunges with everything he's got, becomes explosive and no longer hears or responds to me or my commands. I love in fear that ill have to put him down if he gets ahold of another dog. So for that reason I always tie the leash in a knot around my waist to ensure he can not break free from me. We still go on walks every day but if I see another dog being walked up the way I'll turn us around and avoid the inevitable incident all together. Its all I can do. I wish you the best of luck. Cane Corsos are extra stubborn.

I've watched your videos for a while now Tom, you are absolutely amazing and have such good energy around these dogs, all credit to you and how you explain everything so simply for the owners and viewers alike. It's all total common sense, but because some love their dogs so much, it gets lost in translation and sometimes to the cost of the owners.

This was UPC’s best video yet on what to do when training a dog! Explained so clearly exactly what you are doing to help lovely Lexi! It was brutal to the owner but she was a champ for listening and being so willing to work with everything you told her! Some people just don’t want to hear it at all, bless her for being open so that her dog can have a chance to become healthier if she follows what you taught her. Thanks for sharing this video! 🙏

Wow! Definitely held my breath for some of this one! So true about talking to the dog, great analogy with if you were speaking another language how frustrating it would be if you don't understand!
Props to the owner too! I know how hard it is to realize you are the problem, but I can also say how much better life can be when you put in the work. It's hard work sometimes but absolutely worth it! ☺

I like that I could observe her tail between legs from the beginning, then flash forward to you sitting next to her and her tail was more relaxed. I look forward to an update on her progress. So happy for the owner advocating for her.

I love you, that's weird coming from a stranger I get that. But these videos, your passion to save these owners and rescue these very misunderstood dogs. I can't help but be so thankful and very loving of everything you do. I have a 2 year old German Shep who has allot of nervous/fear aggression ever since I was attacked. Training him and myself has been VERY hard, but your videos KEEP me going and keep me focused on what i want his life to be and not what it is now. He is finally showing a lot of improvement, and I'm feeling a lot more confident walking him again. We both have a LONG way to go, but couldn't be more grateful for your videos. Thank you

This is a great video! Your videos have helped me with my leash and boundary aggressive GSD. By watching you videos I have learned timing is very important when it come to corrections. Luna was corrected for lunging at my neighbor and we turned around and went back to the fence and she sat there like a perfect lady. Now if I can just get my husband to stop talking to her in sentences. He doesn’t get that’s why she does nothing he tells her to do.

Reminds me of my black German Shepherd mix I rescued 4 years ago! She wasn’t quite this aggressive but definitely had a bite record and severe fear aggression. So happy to say that after a few years of structure, boundaries, and a confident handler, she has come such a long way and made many new friends, people and dogs! She will never be the social dog that strangers can pet, but I respect that and will advocate for her every time! I love her so much. NO BAD DOGS

You telling the owners they are the problem, at first, it made me anxious. But, then I realized true communication to the owners is just as important as the communication with the dogs. Your use of all the tools is epic. To see you try things, and if they don't work you work out, you find a way that does. Well done Tom!

This hit home so much. We have a reactive dog who has required a lot of training (of us!), and the fear I have of him biting someone is so tangible, I felt it through the screen when this GS first reacted with the food. Thank you for all your teaching Tom, it has definitely saved my dog's life!

So good, Tom! All these messages you gave to the owner I learned from you 1.5 years ago. Now my reactive GSD no longer reacts to dogs even when they are lunging and barking at us. Relationship, leadership, obedience, structure and training every day or every opportunity made all the difference.
