This is a dog who is very fearful and unfortunately is taking her fear and unleashing it on people she doesn't know. THANK YOU TOM DAVIS for doing what you do and for providing your help and your time for people who absolutely L O V E their dogs. This particular video is extremely helpful and important especially for people similar to my husband and me and in our case, our GSD rescue. We’ve had GSDs before and 3 out of 4 of our dogs were rescues. But our current GSD is the polar opposite of all of the dogs we’ve had, our neighbors have ever had, our relatives have ever had. WE HAVE NEVER SEEN NOR HAD any dog like him!!
I don’t know what happened to him before he came into our lives! But I’m fairly certain that it wasn’t so good!
I think he has a brain tumor and/or a couple other things wrong with him!! I love this handsome 2 year old doggo with all of my heart & so does my husband. We desperately need more professional dog training for him or he desperately needs it ASAP!

She’s doing great, I cried during these sessions with my dog. It was the best experience for my dog, it also brought out my confidence as an abuse survivor! I’m mean, even past recovery, I would beat a person’s ass, but I was so timid in any relationship. No more. Tom you have no idea how important what you do for humans is.

I love that the owner was asking lots of questions, it means that she really cares about her dog and just wants the best for Nala! I will admit I’m still working on advocating for my GSD in front of people, it’s tough but it’s a work in progress.
I felt the exact same way watching this. Good owner absolutely trying to learn to do right by her dog. I also have to advocate for my GSD. "Oh he's so handsome and so obedient, can I pet your dog". "NO sorry, he's still training to be ok with people."

I loved all her questions, I feel the same way as her. I’ve seen my dog react badly in the past and it’s just given me this fear now and when I’m correcting I don’t know if I’m saying the right thing, using the right tool or the right timing. 😅

I'm right there with you! As a young pup I allowed people to invade his space when he wasn't comfortable, I thought it was the way to get him socialized, I should have allowed him to meet people on his own time. Now I am practicing advocating for him, it's definitely tough, especially when we have cute and well trained dogs!

A note to the owner. You are amazing. Thank you for allowing us all to watch the video. No one wants a reactive dog but they’re the cards we are dealt. Good on you for not giving up and not giving your dog up. I hope we get to see how you are going in six months time or so. I learnt a lot of tips for my own dog in this video- thank you for asking questions I would have asked too. All the very best to you.

I thought he explained everything well and her questions made him explain things in deeper detail, and after watching many of his videos I have never once got the impression he has made his clients feel stupid. Anthropomorphizing (treating the animal as if it were a HUMAN) is the biggest problem of many owners of spoiled or vicious dogs.
This guy is great at letting the owners know that too much love and no discipline is a major problem that is caused by the OWNWER.
That "too much love and no discipline" thing goes for young humans as well lol
We Moddy coddle kids too much in today's society, And often they end up in life thinking they can away with anything and struggle with right and wrong.

It's a lot more common than you think. In one of his previous vids this trainer says just that: very few dogs are truly dominant or aggressive. Most dogs are reactive, not dominant/aggressive.

As an owner, handler, and trainer, I can't tell you how happy this owner makes me watching this video. Knew there was a problem she could not manage on her own and she LISTENED to the trainer, asked a TON of questions, and took direction really well. I can't tell you how many owners hear what a trainer is saying but don't ask for clarification if they don't understand. She wants to understand. Getting clarification on heel vs leave it, and when and why to use which command was a total breakthrough and was a pivotal moment in this retrain journey. I would love to see a follow-up on these two.

And I love how non-judgemental you phrase it. Even when the dog is trying to chew your face off, you are so calm and helpful, explaining what is happening and why, from the dog's point of view. It's the little things that I would not have even noticed, like keeping a loose leash, not letting the dog get in front of you. Thanks!

It's especially hard when you have guests who think you're inhumane for NOT humanizing them. Especially when they are acting out around the guests.

I hope you aren't leaving your aggressive insecure dog free with your guests and just telling them to ignore the dog growling at them! I went through this with a woman who was irresponsible and unwilling to get her fearful dog under control after inviting me into her house! I left and didn't come back because I didn't need to be mauled by a big chow! It's unfair to your dog who will likely be euthanized and your guests who may end up with serious injuries! You're friends aren't training props and I hope that's not what you're doing!

Instant tears for this girl and her Nala. You can just feel Nala’s insecurity through the screen. She wants to protect her person, her worried, loving person. The wonders of being a strong leading Mumma though, the change is almost instant RELIEF! The connection a dog forms with her person - I find so amazing, doubled edged sword of course as we’re not always their perfect human. This video - sums that up beautifully

i’ve been where this girl has been before and i totally feel her embarrassment/anxiety around it! it’s hard when you have a dog that’s reactive and aggressive in certain scenarios, but she’s doing the right thing by taking the necessary steps in order to give her dog the best life possible! i love watching your videos and seeing how you handle each dog, it’s super inspiring & you’ve helped me so much with my dogs reactivity over the last couple of years!

This is my dog ! I have taken him to trainers & they always say let me work with him alone & they'll fix the problem but he doesn't act like this so I know it's me. Thanks so much for you knowledge to help those of us who need help.

But with the help of Tom's videos I've learned the signs to prevent things before they escalate. So this was a great video for me.

The key is to never accept any behavior you don't want. If you take charge than the dog doesn't feel the need to. It's ok to punish the dog. Sometimes punishment can just be ignoring the dog. Nothing physical. Or a pop with a leash and collar. This tells them you are in charge now. And once you get that across you barely have to do it. But the key is to stop bad behaviors before they happen. You can tell when your dog is about to go off. And start correcting before they act bad. G
You need someone to work with you one on one.

Her owner is coming along with her own confidence and it shows! Nala will find hers through Momma’s strength. Really proud of her Momma loving her enough to commit to helping her, even when it means she needs to change some things about herself/ self confidence. Says a lot about her heart and I hope they stick with the training and we get an update video!!

She's what I would call, "a good girl in training" - which is what I tell people when I don't want them close to my dog when she's nervous

@@nathanadkins4696 check the AKC temperance list - pitbulls are rated with a really high one, even better than golden retrievers! the issue with pits is that they are often dog reactive! The people who usually want a pit are those who just want a cool attack dog, so the are not trained properly.

What a great owner! Asking questions (I got a bit confused on the leave it and heel timing too until she asked), overcoming her fear and wanting what is best for Nala. Tom's amazing calmness and great explanations are so fantastic to watch!
This is the exact situation with me and my dog. He does great with everyone except me. I finally just recently figured out I had to work on my own confidence in addition to dog training and my dog has gotten so much better recently.
That’s awesome! Did he have a bite history? I just got a rescue who has a bite history (has already bitten me, too) and I think his issues stem from insecurity/overbabying by previous owners. I’m working on my leadership with him, but it’s really scary when the stakes are so high.

The explanation of taking the collar off at night is worth thousands. Tom is always very relatable to the real world. That is the start of creating an unbalanced relationship w a dog for their own safety
Big powerful dogs can be beyond scary. This owner clearly loves her dog very much and wants to do whatever it takes to get to where they both need to be (to successfully function in society). Good on her for taking on the necessary steps and good job Tom for your training methods. It’s awesome to watch you “figure out the dogs as individuals” and try what you think will work best for them rather than try and apply your methods as a blanket training across the board. We need more dog owners like this girl. I had a rescue dog and she was so overprotective of me and it was hard work teaching her that other people were ok it took 3 years but it was worth it.

What this video has led my mind to is the want to know more about different kinds of reactivity, how to recognize them, and how to act on them! My own dog reacts towards other dogs in excitement, and I find it hard to discourage him from it!

Love the way you show owner learning more than you training dog. I think we need videos with both. It's nice to know how to do it well which you make it look easy, since you're so experienced. But it's also important for us to see the process of owner learning and making mistakes, and I loved how this video was almost 100% her doing the retraining of Nala. They are in good hands and can't wait to see even more progress. I've got a fear reactive heeler mix rescue, also named Nala, that came to me about three weeks into binging your channel last fall, so helpful as we're trying to learn together. She that other dogs aren't a threat. I the psychology of dogs abs her breeds. This channel has been a live saver,as I gained so much wisdom and insight and confidence which was essential to her success from moment one. Tho tbh she had little that needed worked on, as it's obvious she's had training in some of the basics in her past. But I would have "ruined her" was it not for all I've gained in understanding the basics humans need to be successful owners. Thank you so much. And keep up the good work and growing in your tweaks to the way you teach/produce content.

I think this is probably one of my favorite video yet. It touches so many important points.
This video helped me understand a lot better on how to disengage. My dog had reactive issues because he feels like he needs to protect me. We are doing obedience and leadership training with him and it's helping a lot to understand how to correct the issue. The question she asked about when to say leave it vs heal was so helpful and I really needed to hear that. Thank you for your educational videos on this matter. It really helps!!
I can honestly watch ur lessons allday, been watching ur lessons from 🇦🇺🇦🇺 & u have taught me to understand my dogs so well. I can walk both my dogs on or off leash anywhere and their focus is solely on me every sec. It took a bit to teach them, quick jerk on the prong collar snaps their focus back on to me and no other peson or animal.. cheers mate

I love this video. I love his training style too. I’m practically new here to this guys channel. I’m used to watching Cesar Millian and his shows like the dog whisperer. I’ve learned everything on how to train a dog and how to handle them and how you yourself need to check on your feelings yourself because what you feel gets transferred to the dog cuz they can feel that. I learned all that from watching his shows and also I volunteered and worked for a dog training business for a while and I switched careers to being a vet technician and then I left that job and I’m doing something else but point is that all I’ve learned everyone says exactly the same thing. The only difference is the correction. When you correct a dog for there bad behavior what Cesar Millain does is he uses his two fingers to poke the side of the dogs belly. It would feel like if someone is poking you on the side of your belly and that snaps the dog out of the bad behavior. What this guy is doing and saying instead of of the poking of the side of the dog is use that prong collar and/or that e-collar. They are two different types of correction styles for bad behavior and they both do they same: snap the dog out of the bad behavior and they are both humane. I’m officially now a subscriber.

@@emmagrace6396 I agree Emma that they are very similar. The ecollar can be used 1/2 mile away when the fingers can't, however. And I can't even imagine how much grief Cesar would get if he mentioned "prong". Tom is able to trust his experiences, and anyone who worked in animal control has a lot of experience, plus a thicker skin. I love GSD but that white one with the kennel resource guarding issues - just dang!

I loved this video!! I love the questions the owner asked!! These are all great questions. Tom does an amazing job of explaining "I can get your dog to listen, but YOU need to get your dog to listen. What happens when I (Tom) am not there?" This is such good training!!!
