I just got a Rottie from the local shelter here in New Jersey and your videos have been helping so much in getting her to be a happy obedient dog. I'm looking into your e-collar from dogtra so we can train off leash soon!
See I don't get why that's incorrect because I too also had trained my dog to heal on the right because when we're walking on the street they'll be protected from the cars and or whatever else is coming on the streets so why is that wrong

No.. everyone in the house should work with the dog from day one...her commands were weak and confusing to the dog..she is like why should I listen to someone under me?
*Good breeders of German Shepherds require buyers to wait until the dogs growth plates close at around 18 months. Early spay/neuter greatly increases risk of Hip & elbow dysplasia, ACL tears, deadly bone cancer as well as anxiety/fearful aggression/phobias such as fireworks & storms. There is No good reason not to wait.

My vet said 24 months minimum. Took my Belgian in for his 10week shots she was very adamant 24 months and beyond for larger dogs

Yep! That’s why Tom said in the video to wait until they’re fully mature. But the maturity “benchmark” is why there’s a change in behavior.
i agree with that too i wish people that waited were more common
ive been trying to adopt a gsd puppy from shelters but they all force people to spay at 3 months no matter what which ruins their whole life its so frustrating
like i know that they need to spay so less strays appear in the future but we should be able to sign something to spay at a later age for their own safety
The interpersonal relationship between the family is very important. Dogs are watching everything so if they feel that some member of the family is lower on the hierarchy they will elevate themself into the spot that they feel they fit. If the leaders aren’t united in the way they treat the dog and interact with the dog then the dog will follow the one they respect as leader.
You know, I’ve watched this channel for maybe 2 years now? And although I’ve seen Tom do the “Tune up” like a thousand times it just clicked that it wouldn’t be a bad thing to do with my dogs before going on walks and exercising. Thanks Tom!
Lol! Yes, indeed! My GSD needed that tune up every time before leaving my property until she was like 5 years old. Then she got a bit more chill.

Again people like this shouldn't own dogs like Shepard's and big dominant dogs...you can tell she hasn't worked with the dog at all...that's the problem..just letting her do whatever probably all day...and anxious dogs are that way because of the owner when they are a one owner dog

I love that training isn't all about conditioning and obedience but also how to steer the dog so as to not confuse it. I found that quite interesting. It's like teaching a fashion model how to walk on the catwalk without falling down in those crazy high heels for the owners and not just how to pose.
Thea's face and colouring look EXACTLY like my Smokey! The transformation of the owner though was insane to watch, even the 2nd day you could see that she was really getting it. I also appreciate that you didn't try to convince the owner whether to spay her dog or not, you were just giving her information and letting her make her own decision.
So good…..and the ending……you have the tools and know what you have to do and it’s up to you…..my dog has taken a lot of hours to train, it’s so rewarding if you put the time in.

I get my dog to pay attention to me by bringing out the e collar control unit. I don’t even have to put the collar on or turn on the unit! Once she sees the controller she listens. I did train her with the e collar first, of course.
This video just helped explained why my pit bull went from listening to me and my fiancé to only listening to me sometimes now and never listening to him. She acts like a total monster with him, jumping up and mouthing him - like she is super excited to play around him. With me, she doesn't do that, but follows me whining a lot.
It's amazing to watch this and realize how far I've come with my relationship with my dog. I remember finding Tom Davis when I was totally lost and frustrated and scared of what my dog was capable of. Now it feels so good to be reminded that even though we still have plenty that we are working on, we've truly accomplished so much through this channel. Thank you for your work, Tom. You've improved my life so much!
can we also acknowledge that classic GSD excitement to be working once you get them into that headspace? god i love it. my dog gets so bright eyed when he realizes we are going to be "working" i call it. we had to do a tune up after my dog had his hip replacement surgery. it was so cool to see him slide back into that mode.
Your videos have helped me advocate for my reactive ACD and improve obedience in him and my recent pit/lab rescue. Thank you for speaking for dogs and showing dog owners the importance of balanced training!

@@kayeff8415 Oh cool, I’ve always wanted to visit Australia. Yeah he used to work on a ranch with me but then his reactivity got bad and he had to stop coming. I’m hoping that once he gets polished up he’ll be able to start doing jobs again when I can trust him. Cheers!

its so nice to hear you say that you waited to spay/neuter your dogs. i’ve always heard it’s better for them and some people are still so stuck on having them fixed as early as possible and try to make you feel bad about waiting

This was a very informative video when it comes to intact dogs, and explains a lot of why my intact male wants to sniff every blade of grass 😂 Going forward I now know why he is like this. Thanks 😊 Great video.
Yeah, just some background information about my experience.
Don’t worry, fixed dogs also want to sniff every blade of grass 😂. Spayed females are particularly bad for it!
I have 16 years in the vet profession and what Tom was talking about with the behavior problems developing at around 12-24 months of age is CLASSIC- clients call with “all of the sudden!” And “out of nowhere!” Or they blame “this one thing happened once and caused this issue!” But in reality, it’s because the dog went from puppy brain to adult brain. It’s nice to hear a great trainer validating what I’ve seen for over a decade.
To create an environment for dogs and owners, that is calm and instructive is very very impressive. You got it Tom Davis, thank you for sharing.

I had a GSD and loved him so much, but learned that breed is too intense for me. So important to understand breed behavior and what you can handle and will work best with your lifestyle.

This is exactly where I’m at with my Dutchie- about 9mos old, intact male. Listens to my husband so much better than me, and very reactive to everything when he’s with just me- reactivity started right at about the 8-8.5 month old mark. Working on getting him fixed right now and working with a trainer to train ME on how to handle him and be a leader so he will listen to me and behave like he does with my husband. It can be so incredibly frustrating watching how the dog behaves with my husband though- just the complete opposite! Even though my dog is a LOT more reactive than Thea is, this video gives me hope!

One of your best training/instructional videos! I concur with the intact female behavior. It definitely gets them amped up and particularly right before a heat cycle. In fact, I have learned that when my female acts bratty or screamy that she Is just about to go into heat!😱😱😱
You are one of the best trainers online. I wish I could attend one of your classes, so my now 4 year old GSD could learn to ignore other dogs and not be so reactive. This GSD did a great job listening to her owner on a reasonably period of time.

The ball with the rubber string!!!! They used to be called rocket balls. I used to live with the guy who invented them, he was a close family friend. He died from cancer years ago but he was a really really really incredible man and inventor. So it seriously warms my heart to see u using those 😍 you are awesome. I'm not sure what they're called now but I always knew them as rocket balls and u could shoot them up to 200 ft into the air! Lol. Seriously soo soo cool u use those!!!

My rescue GSD female is approximately 2yrs old and since we met a year or so ago she loves for me to lightly touch her head and or snout, I was calming her in the car the 3 hrs drive home the entire way, she'd been in numerous vehicles over a 12-14hr total trip and the only time she was calm enough to get some sleep was while I was lightly rubbing her forehead,to this moment, like a off button, she just sits and doesn't move , crazy

I recently discovered your videos, and I really appreciate your techniques with the dogs, and your teaching style. I have been working with my 8 year old bully mix, and he's come a long way on the leash ... when there are absolutely no distractions. Outside, he's more interested in sniffing the ground than any flick or pop of his leash - like I'm not even there. I would love to see some guidance for gaining his engagement when he's so distracted by smells outside (and this is in our own yard too). Thank you!

Fantastic information and training session. Did not realize how much a non fixed dog affects their actions. I always get rescue dogs and are fixed. Very interesting information, once again the more you share the more I learn.

People forget dogs had jobs, the fact they are now pets is to honor their ancestors sacrifices A gift of our modern society.
I’m so happy to say my 14 month old male never went through a “change” due to being intact. He is still the same sweet, patient and sociable dog he always was. But I think that has to do with the advanced obedience I’ve put into him. Now even with being intact I can call him away from a female in heat and get him to ignore her.

he’s only 14 months old. there may come a time where he’s unable to follow your directions due to his mating instinct. to preserve the longevity of his life, reduce his chances of painful cancer and improve his outlook, it’s best to have him neutered.

I feel like dog maturity isn't talked about enough. developmental stages in the first 2 years is wild. our trainer is great at explaining this. we called him when my dog was around 6 months old and if you know a 6 month old GSD you know this is prime acting out phase in puppihood. lol omg i remember back then i was hopeless. He sat with us for our fist session just explaining what we could expect in general, what to expect out of our dog and what we needed to do to combat some of the bad behaviors so that transition between development didn't run our house hold it really helped a lot and he was not wrong. every different stage he was spot on with. now we are in the last half a year before he is deemed an adult dog and we are going through this phase of maturing and becoming an adult. we know how to handle it but if our trainer never sat us down and basically spelled it out i think we would have felt so lost and hopeless. especially the intact male shepherds being NOSE to the ground... that's 100% true for my dog.
Same happened with our 2yr male GSD immediately after his adoption. We had my wife start making his meals and feeding him. Problem solved!

This video was made for my husband and Luna!!! My husband can’t do anything with my GSD, Luna. Interested what you said about intact dogs smelling so much. However, what do you do when your spayed female (spayed at 20 months and is now 26 months old) smells everything? She can pee and goes back and smells her own pee. I have never had a dog that is so nosy. Suggestions anyone.
She’s still young exploring new things as they go! Could be a new dog in the area or if you take her on different routes my dog would constantly sniff if I took her a different way or walked her on a different side of the street than normal because it was “different” even in our yard sometimes she’d sniff lots sometimes it’s new scents as dogs noses are so powerful an example we had a new dog next door that took the same walk route as us and she’d pee and then my dog would pee exactly there as well then sniff her pee we were told it was to make sure that it was “her spot” and the other dogs smell was “covered up” As for known places I took my dog to a trainer who was not the best and more so “abusive” than training (I regret taking her there 😕) and it was anxiety ridden for her which made her sniff even more at home too! A better trainer said It was because of the nerves! So if your dog went through something (big or small)that triggered a nerve that could also be why she’s smelling so much because she’s trying to figure out the “unknown” or sniff out if it’s safe (these theories are just my knowledge from my dogs sniffing may not be the same)

I've had German Shepherds since living in Germany in the 80s. They need training from the start, so many get cute GSD puppies and by the time they're 4 months old, that cute puppy is out of control. There was a break in my owning a GSD because I couldn't put in the time it would take. Now I'm back to having two intact males, but I'm the alpha, all 5 feet of me!
He's always watching me to anticipate my next move or need.
It's a relationship between us, we trust each other.
Right? And a good owner does the same for their dogs... are they hot? Hungry? Anxious? Bored? When you have that bond you know well before they act out.
My dog pays attention on a putting collar. I'm still working on an e collar.
I'm a fan of what works as you say. I want my dog to be successful and he can't on a harness

Hey! love your videos! could you talk about how you were able to have your dutch so calm around other dogs? What did you do when she was a puppy to make her not care about dogs?

And here I was worried my dog is exactly like this one and she's only 5 months old so she still has a lot of growing to do but she's a Husky and Shepherd mix she has the exact temperament of both stubbornness and all and I totally get when you said that the dog is kind of saying make me because my dog follows me to the end of the Earth but as soon as I ask for the follow she's like um no, not every time, which then also goes for everything like my garden and stuff that I say no to she checks to see if I'm serious and I'm going to follow through and there are times when you don't have the ability to always follow through you just need them to listen especially when you've already trained this stuff daily for months straight with consistency for them to just start becoming teens/adults it's very difficult it's almost like starting your training all over 😟 so what I wanted to add is I noticed you say good girl even when mistakes were made and you had to pull her a bit to get her to notice you and the command I thought I was overusing that statement good girl because I was saying it even after errors when she did the thing even though I had to use some pressure I kind of started to feel like I was encouraging bad behavior because she became confused thinking she could sometimes do those things.. and she'd still get a good girl out of it from me if she eventually did it. Do you know what I mean I feel like I shouldn't be saying good girl so much when she does not do it correctly I'd rather just say nothing correct her and move forward with the good things would that be okay as well to not acknowledge the mistakes/intentionally not listening until she's ready if I have to use that pressure she's not understanding that my simple command should be enough 🤔
If the dog knows and understands the command fully, then yes that should work,as sometimes intermittent praise works better than constant praise.

Our mastiff only listens to me, but it's less of an issue because he spends most of his time sleeping or sitting straight up and staring at someone. If husband tries to tell our dog to sit, lay down, go to bed, he will turn around and look at me like, "Do I have to?"

My dog was fixed before her first heat. My vet recommended it. No issues from it. Honestly didn't really change anything. She's still a high strung goofball lol
Funny that you say that obsession. Even though Karr is not an intact male he is obsessed Wabbits are his favourite. So I have a question why is it when I say it’s a baby he become less obsessive. We have one that sits in our yard and he barks at it though the window and I have to make him leave.

Oh my. This is exactly the video I needed. I have many of these concerns with our new 2.5 year old German Shepherd. Unfortunately, we have to put him in a 10x20 ft. kennel almost daily for about 8 hours. When I can let him out I feel bad so I let him play first. When and how do I transition to a training session to be most effective? Thank you.
It feels weird to make my dog heel go the left. It seems so awkward. I didn’t realize I was doing it wrong until someone told me that I’m supposed to have them to my left. Just feels weird
This is how it was with our shepherds. Our male would only listen to me and our female would only listen to my wife. We are making progress in terms of both being the authority and in control for both shepherds.

Question for Tom but all suggestions are helpful!! I've been walking/working with a male boxer puppy since he was 5months & hes about 14months now, (working parents, daughters are 6 & 3 so they need someone to get his energy out in the morning, otherwise hes too wild for the nanny since the yard is small, ive worked with so many dogs ive added minor training for leash & park manners) im about to go on maternity leave in about a month & the family is going to be walking him or having the nanny walk him. With me, hes very responsive, will be antsy but does his best to sit for pickup, he is a puller but they didnt want to use a prong collar so i had to snap his flat collar but he learned quick & responds well enough that he walks mostly loose leashed with me. (Command wise hes really strong on leave-it, wait (a sit when a dog is coming up the trail), sit, come; all of these are 100% on leash, about 95% first time when hes off leash at the dog park) He isnt super food motivated, & hes definitely not going to mellow any time soon since hes intact. He pulls like crazy when the nanny walks him (& probably when they go on family walks) we've gone together & shes ok at getting his attention but like i said its just a flat collar & he knows she isn't going to keep him as accountable.
I absolutely love this dog & their family & while i dont want all the work ive done for the past months to deteriorate while im gone, i ultimately want them to have an obedient dog not just obedient with me.
What are the main things you think I should talk them through to ensure he doesnt wreak havoc the second I stop working consistently? My current points will be consistent, strong accountability when on leash. (maybe talk to them again about a slip or prong collar) & giving him mental stimulation mixed with physical because he is a working dog who needs it before he can be relaxed in the house without being a wrecking ball lol

his other biggest issue is jumping when i pick him up & at guests , hes very excitable & now is a hefty guy, he treats any sort of physical correction as a game (boxer genes lol) so it actually makes his jumping worse & the best ive done is tuck hands in & give no attention other than the occasional "OFF" but even then its about 60 seconds of turning my back to him while he jumps up & around before he'll settle enough to listen to a 'sit' or any other command, he doesnt at all listen to the rest of the adults try to engage him when he's excited because his focus is on greeting me so i assume its the same with other guests
