    Nikki gave a good 'I don't think we're watching the same show' look to Steven for half of the intro and post episode. There are no cartoon villains in the Expanse, it's not a soap opera, this isn't CSI where we spend a season hunting Dexter. You'll get there Steven, and Nikki you keep giving that crazy man side eye.

    The writers for this show are some of the best in the business right now. Granted, they have great source material, but they know how to deviate every now and then.
    The "donkey balls" scenario is nowhere to be found in Leviathan Wakes, the first Expanse book. It's entirely original, while keeping the characters and world true to their book counterparts.
    And Wes Chatham (Amos) is a huge fan of the books, and wanted nothing more than to play Amos, his favorite character, in the show. This role is to him what Geralt of Rivia is to Henry Cavill, and the passion he brings to the role really shines through.

    • @odedkoren5596
      @odedkoren5596 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I also find it interesting that this episode which is the first to seriously deviate from the books is also the first one written by Ty and Dan (the book writers)

    • @robertwinslade3104
      @robertwinslade3104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@odedkoren5596 I really appreciate that unlike some authors these guys aren't that fussed about making changes to the source material if those changes will improve the final product and have even said in interviews that they saw working on the show as an opportunity to refine the story. I recently read Leviathan Wakes after finishing the show and as much as I enjoyed it I felt that for me personally it was a rare case of the adaptation being better than the book.

    • @bobtausworthe
      @bobtausworthe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Better than the book isn't the right word I think. Right for this medium sounds better. Christopher Lee was a massive LOTR fan and was asked what he thought about the changes made for the movie. He said it was right to do so because you tell stories differently in different mediums

    If Holden didnt log the distress call in episode 1, the distress call would have still ran out there until a ship eventually responded. So i dont really blame holden for it.

    No Spoilers. All of your questions about who is allied to whom will get answered. I won't say where you are right or wrong but you're asking the right questions.
    One if brilliant things about this show is that there are no clear villains. Everyone has arguable reasons for what they are doing. You may not agree with them but they have a logical justification.

    • @SnaFubar_24
      @SnaFubar_24 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is where truly good TV is made... in the gray areas. There are rare characters who's motives are black or white but most people live in the gray area with intentions that are, at least to them, justifiable. The writers of this show understand that I think.

    Elias Toufexis, the actor who played Kenzo, the spy with the eye, did a cameo for another TH-cam reactor, "Funny Lil Gal," and told how he had originally auditioned for Amos. He clearly didn't get the part, but they liked him enough to create the character of Kenzo. He said that normally, he might harbor some resentment and animosity for the other actor who got the role he wanted, but as soon as he saw Wes Chatham, and how he played the role, he knew that they made the right choice. Wes *was* Amos Burton.
    If you guys have not read the books yet, you should at least read, or listen to, "The Churn" an Expanse novella and learn some of the dark backstory of Amos/ Timmy.
    Ive always thought it would have been cool and funny if this episode was titled, "Donkey Balls."

    • @Skank_and_Gutterboy

      Yep. There's been times at my job that I interviewed for a job, didn't get it, and then I work later with the guy who did. I'm really conscious about not hating on the guy who got the job and being fair to him. It's business. If the guy is a total hamburger and I feel like I got screwed, my beef is with the boss(es) that hired him, not the guy who got the job.

  • @billross7245

    Interesting theories. The title "Windmills" is another reference to Don Quixote, 'Tilting at windmills' - taking on challenges bigger then himself. We see that Elise literally has the book and it was Holden's favorite. He thought of himself as a knight and Elise hated to tell him it was a tragedy. We also see a lot of wind turbines around the Holden property which are the present-day windmills.
    Part of Holden's problem is he's naive, too honest, and sees everything in black and white. He's willing to announce to the solar system what he thinks is the truth without having all the facts, thereby starting a riot, maybe a war, and other crazy shit.

    • @aaronia8092
      @aaronia8092 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Both Holden and Miller are parallels to Don Quixote. Miller is the extremely thin and tall guy who is the laughingstock of the town, but he believes he is doing the right thing and leaves everything behind to save his 'Dulcinea'.

    Fun fact: The actor playing the spy is Elias Toufexis. He's best known for being the voice actor of the protagonist in the video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a game that deals heavily with cybernetic augmentation. So his cybernetic eye in this was a bit of an homage on the part of the producers.

    The Expanse, IMHO, is about Shades of Gray. Every "Good Guy" or "Bad Guy" gets their chance to both take risks and justify their actions. In the scope of Earth, Mars the Belt and everything else I don't feel any characters ever come across as truly Evil or Bad or Righteous. They're all just people with allegiances that change as their view points change. FWIW.

    • @SciFiCatGuy

      While I dig your take, I have a minor disagreement. IMO, Jule-Pierre is truly evil. He was moved very little at the loss of his own daughter. He gave the order to sacrifice a hundred thousand human beings for the sake of, basically, his personal wealth. He was ready to personally sacrifice a child.
      For that matter, Dr. Strickland... nuff said.
      Dresden and his crew. Not the scientists who were transcranial magnetically lobotomised, but the thugs who handled those scientists, carried his equipment, etc.
      Nguyen.
      Murty, Morty, Marty, Murtry.
      I would also throw in Marco.
      Just my opinion.

    The beauty of this show is the density of the information and foreshadowing going on. Every visual has information. Screens in the backgrounds voices n the intercom or announcements going on in a station behind the main dialogue. Some of it will not make sense unti Season 3. But all of it is realistic no cartoon characters, people’s motivations are real and they change. Watch Holden change from the guy who wanted to stop Amos as time goes by.. and remember time is passing space is a big place.

      "Corrupt" really isn't the right term. He's not taking bribes, he's not dealing drugs, he's not stealing from people (until he raided Julie Mao's room, but she was dead and her dad is a tycoon). He strikes me as more of a long-time cop who operates by the street-rules, not so much the codified policies and regs of the job. Like the time somebody threw a bottle that sprayed broken glass on them. The female cop was all, "You just gonna let that go?!" Miller said, "Uh, he went that way." He knew running after the guy was running the fool's errand. 99% he's gonna get away and if caught, the penalty is so light that it's not worth the time and effort. Rookie cop is the type that hands out a ticket for every little thing. Veteran cop is like, "Screw that. Go after what's important. Jaywalking isn't it."

      This episode does a good job of showing how Holden is good but naïve. When Amos goes down to the entry door to get ready to take out the Martians if they board, he accuses Amos of babbling and acts like he's a psychotic fool. No, Amos was the only one seeing the situation clearly and knowing what had to be done. It was probably going to be a choice of fighting it out or doing life in prison. It was a clear case of "them or us". Holden, due to his inexperience with these things, still thinks that he can talk his way out of anything if he's reasonable. Amos knows that if you try that, they'll just run straight over you. The Martians will want to hold somebody responsible for the loss of the Donnager. Guilty or not, the Rocinante crew will be held up as an example of what happens to terrorists that f**k with Mars. Amos is right, the last two ships that they were on both exploded under mysterious circumstances, how the hell are they NOT going to be labeled terrorists? Amos is also right that Holden is all good with being the guy out front as long as he's personally benefitting and life is good. The real measure of a man is how you react when all your available choices are bad and you somehow have to pick one. He wants to be Ghandi and not spill the "innocent blood" of guys that would take him out in a New York second and not lose a second of sleep over it.

    You need to identify the different factions first, then place each character into each faction as an origin .. then determine if they've had a change of heart that would cause them to change up factions. The very first episode we learned that Christian despises the OPA enough to torture a captive belter she thought might be OPA... what we learned about her in this episode is the reason she hates the OPA..they killed her son. Think of the OPA as belter extremists.

    I mostly have to laugh so damn hard at your speculations. You get a few things right here and there, but so many are just not even close.
    Another problem you have is you keep thinking this is like so many other shows, and everything is "Black & White" aka "Good or Bad" this show is so many onion layers of grey. There are some really REALLY dark folks in the show for sure, some irredeemable evil folks, but even those, are not simplistic doing evil for evil sakes.
    I don't remember where the quote came from, but this show really makes the quote "Everyone is the hero of their own story" so true. Even those doing the most evil of all, in the end, think they are justified to do what they are doing for the "benefit" of their own people, whether that's their faction or all humanity as they see it.

    This is a show where it's important to take note of the facts, but not fall into the trap of interpreting the facts. For example, we KNOW Miller got fired. The why is implied but wasn't explained in the last episode. It's very easy to make an ironclad theory based on supposition and still be completely wrong. Operation Tailwind is a good real world example.

      And if they're wrong with their theories, what happens? Nothing. It's fun, it lets them go over plot points together, and it allows us see where their head is at with what's happening, win-win.

    • @Melancthon7332
      @Melancthon7332 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@afontana89 Having seen a lot of fandom for a lot of shows over the years go nuts picking apart every detail, you can definitely reach a point where your own ideas and speculation start to take over your viewing experience, and I think it can be detrimental - when the viewer gets mad that the plot isn't nearly as convoluted as what they came up with in their head. And honestly, this just isn't the show for that kind of viewing - this isn't a mystery show like Lost or Westworld, it's actually pretty straightforward in being about decisions people make in the moment rather than twists being revealed.

    I understand why everyone views Anderson Dawes as a villain, because both the books and show portray him like that, only because the books are POV, and the show has to adapt it some way. But he really isn't a villain, he's just an antagonist to our protagonist, but to the most disadvantaged people, he is a literal messiah, because he is genuinely doing things for the people most abused by the elitist Earthers and Martians. He's not even like Thanos, where some people think he was doing the right thing the wrong way. Dawes is doing the right thing the ONLY way he can, otherwise the overwhelming and untouchable advantages Earth and Mars have over the Belters will leave them to stay oppressed with no hope of equality, or even just a small cut of what they truly deserve for the work they do.

    The bird outside Julie's apartment is real. It looks weird because the gravity on Ceres is low so it doesn't have to flap it's wings so often. It also shows how much attention to detail on physics they do on The Expanse
