@@adamajobe1756 it is definitely one of the best episodes. If I had to pick a favorite it would probably be the one where Miller delivers the nuke to Julie Mao. All of that protomolecule looked amazing. Great special effects!
I love it. You can see throughout the season how terrified he is that Prax is losing his humanity and Amos does not want Prax to end up like him. That moment has so much more meaning when you put it into the context of Prax and Amos’ relationship throughout the season
Frank the NOOB I love where Amos says, “He is my best friend” when the reporter asks him about Prax. The depth of love and respect in his eyes touched your soul
Whoever cast Wes as Amos deserves a fckn medal. Best casting in the history of television imo. Wes embodies every single ounce of the character and Amos should be recognized as one of the best sci-fi characters that has ever been created
He plays the character so perfectly. The "You're not that guy . . . you're not that guy . . . . I am that guy" scene is one of my favorite examples. A friend told me to rewatch that scene with the sound off and watch his facial expressions. When he steps in to stop Prax from shooting Strickland, Amos is nothing but compassion and almost a little afraid of what will happen to Prax if he can't talk him out of shooting the doctor because he knows what it will do to Prax. Then, once he has guided Prax back through the airlock door and away from the darker path, he turns around and there is nothing but the stone killer that is down inside of Amos and there is no doubt that he was never going to save Strickland's life, just the soul of his friend. Honestly, I find Amos's moral choices to be the most interesting because of how damaged and complicated his moral compass is, compared to most of the cast.
The Expanse is hands down, one of the best shows I've ever watched. On so many levels. The Expanse should be the gold standard for all of TV to follow.
Agree. And if you haven't already, read the books! I know everyone says that, but it's so true. I was hooked on the book series before they even started shooting the show. The show is so good, and quite loyal to the books, but as usual, there's only a certain amount of book you can squeeze into a show.
I'm fascinated by the fact that Wes took "The Churn" and sought out a psychologist to study the Amos character and all the possible scenarios of his development. It just shows you how much he's committed to his craft. No wonder Amos is the favourite character for many fans of the show, whether they've read the books or not.
@@4EverLearning757 "The Churn" is a novella by James S. A. Corey set in The Expanse universe that tells the story of Amos back on Earth (Baltimore) before joining the Rocinante crew. It's about 60 pages (depending on your edition) and well worth the read as it gives you great insight into Amos's character, what he had been through, and why he is the way he is. Highly recommended. I figured it was either that scene or the one where he had to provide cover for Naomi and the woman who did what she did. Sorry don't wasn't to give too much away. The scene where Mirty pun he's him was so much fun, I loved it!!!
Amos is a great example to how well this show is written. At the beginning I thought he was just a one dimensional asshole and I used to hate him. But now he is by far my favorite character and I believe he is one of the more complex and nuanced characters on any show currently on.
I totally agree ! You have to pay close attention to his facial expressions, that are very subtle, his eyes are very expressive, like in the scene where Prax finally finds his daughter and introduces Amos as his best friend. The look on Amos's face is precious, it's like he had never been introduced as a best friend before in his life. If you blink, you would miss his facial expression which speaks volumes. And that's only one quick scene.
Exactly. That’s why The Expanse is thus far the closest thing to Game of Thrones(excluding final season) since Game of Thrones when it comes to character development and telling a big story on a massive canvas. The thing I most appreciated about GOT was the ability to develop characters in ways that completely change the viewer’s relationship with that character, all while doing this without it seeming forced or unrealistic(again, excluding final season). Think about the development of Jaime Lannister, The Hound, or Sansa, the development of these characters among others is what really made that series tick, it’s why the hurried finish of the last season fell flat. I see similar long character development in characters on The Expanse like Amos, Bobby, and Avasarala.
@@lindagenerally2796 And I love both "parts" of that facial expression. The first one being the direct eye contact "WAT.", the second part looking away, more like a super-humble and super self-critical "wow... really? I... wow..."
Maybe this says something about me (embarrassingly), but Amos was my favorite right off the bat, and I only grew more attached to the character as he was fleshed out. It spoke to me on the level of there being so much more going on behind the aggressive demeanor many men carry. We struggle to express ourselves, especially as we get old and become more experienced and mature, and it's engaging to see Amos travel down that path.
Wes Chatham is my favorite person on the show, he's so happy to be doing the role and he cares so much about honoring the character that you can't help but respect him. He's also so genuinely appreciative of the audience, some people just say "oh we love our fans" because they're supposed to but you can tell he really loves his job.
Amos Burton: “You got it, Chrissie.” Chrisjen Avasarala: “Don’t fucking call me that. I’m the acting secretary-general of the United Nations, not your favorite stripper.” Amos spread his hands. “Could be room for both.” Comedy gold right there. Fuckin love amos, no filter is life!!
I really think that The Expanse it's an incredible milestone in the cinema/TV show history because not only it's an incredibly well-produced show that explores science as a way of building and solving conflicts, but the cast it's really engaged with it, not only a job but as a cultural phenomenon. They engage with the fans and give their best to bring to life the emotions and drama that each character faces. It's the best scifi show in actuality IMO.
It kind of annoys me how people get so hyperbolic and forget that many great shows and movies came before this. It's good, but to put it on a pedestal and ignore everything else is unhealthy. There's always room for improvement and it is far from a perfect show.
@@BlueZirnitra I think that narratively there are no show today that can even compare to The Expanse. If we are comparing with classics like Battlestar, The Expanse is more consistent in terms of quality than them.
@@cosapocha Absolutely, this season it supplanted battlestar as my favorite sci-fi show. There is room for improvement of course, but i wouldn't say "a lot". I think season 3 was marginally better than 4, mostly because of the first half of the avasarala re-election storyline could drag at times but still fantastic.
I'm a fan of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, Firefly, Stargate, Battlestar: Galactica, you name it I'm a fan. If you don't see how The Expanse blows all those out the water, nobody can help you. Believe me.
I wish Wes Chatam such success. His portrayal of Amos is nuanced and haunting. The characters past is reflected in the performers eyes, whic suggests that Wes let Amos into his soul. For television, that is truly special. I find it noteworthy that the two characters with the most emotional depth in their universe, Camina, and Amos are the two most light hearted and amiable people in real life. Neither Wes Chatam nor Cara Gee are anything like the characters they portray, but they embody them effortlessly. Mr Chatam, you have moved me more than you could possibly imagine. Thank you for bringing Amos to life in such an authentic 3-Dimensional way. You ARE that guy.
Amos is hands down my favorite character on Expanse. Wes does an exceptional job with the character. I love the whole cold, emotionless robot trying to be human dynamic of Amos. His idgaf as long as it's effective attitude towards situations is a beacon of strength in an emotional story.
So, Duarte is like the anti-Holden. Who is the anti-Amos? Cortazar? I think that Amos is meant to be a cautionary tale more than an inspirational or idealized figure. Due to his traumatic upbringing, he does not have the ability to process social or moral cues, and instead relies on Naomi and Holden to do that for him. We as the readers and audience are very lucky that Amos found such principled characters to follow, but he would have become a total monster if he had, for instance, come under the sway of villains like Jules-Pierre, Strickland, or Duarte. The cautionary tale is that far too many people today are in a similar boat and offload their moral and ethical processing to charismatic figures, many of which are far from paragons.
@@Vasharan I was thinking something similar. like yeah strong muscles and nerves of steel, but with a broken/weak mind. Like screwing screws with a hammer.
V is for Void - I agree that it is a really great aspect of Amos’ character. That really made the show for me in the first couple of seasons. I think they do give some exposition that explains he consciously selected Naomi to be his moral compass because she was a good person. He is definitely the most interesting part of the crew and the show would just be “great” and not “absolutely f’ing amazing” if Wes Chatham’s Amos wasn’t part of it.
@@Vasharan This is very true. But what is also engaging is that Amos is so engagingly awkward and honest in human relationships. It's like the Dexter of the early seasons before Dex became a douche.
Wow, that's so impressive that Chatham put in so much effort to understand the character, the childhood and even talked with a psychologist to understand how certain childhood trauma would manifest itself in behavior and mannerisms. No wonder he does such an amazing job at portraying the character.
That was one of my favorite lines. They got a *great* cast for season 4. Though I wish they had followed the book more closely... but time limitations, and budget. And they wanted to get more into Nemesis Game arc. So understandable. Would have been nice to see Havelock again.
I just recently got into The Expanse after repeatedly hearing how good it is. I just finished season 5 and it's a bittersweet feeling to head into the final season. This show is fantastic. It doesn't treat the viewer as an idiot - it doesn't bog down in exposition and lets the viewer figure things out on his or her own. Wes is fantastic in it, of course, and the actor who plays Marco Inaros NAILS that role. Fantastic show and I've told every one of my friends they need to watch it.
Adam is a great interviewer. He asks good questions and and let’s the interviewee talk. Amos is one of my favorite characters and is fascinating to hear Wes Chatham talk about how he brings him to life.
You can tell he *really* loves Amos, and his job. He's just so *animated* when he does. He's like a big kid, but I could watch him talk about it for a lot longer. He's just so enthusiastic, and articulate.
I've been saying since season 1, this show absolutely nails it's props. Everything looks spot on, no cheap repainted everyday objects. All if the logos and symbols are always perfect, everything looks like you could pick it up and use it, or put it on.
Sorry for the text wall, I'm very sleep deprived and passionate about this subject. There are actually a lot of cheap repainted objects on The Expanse, afaik they didn't have much of a prop budget in season 1 and 2 (especially after finishing the Roci's interior) and the prop department's director regularly goes thrift shopping to find things to make props out of. This channel actually has an interview with the guy, and he talks about some of the cooler, more made-from-scratch stuff here: th-cam.com/video/CF65tmxtkuo/w-d-xo.html I have to say, the boots are a stroke of genius! I would never have thought of that solution! Anyway, repainted household objects are a staple in prop building, especially sci-fi. Nobody has the time, money and energy to make all- or even most- of the props from scratch. It's literally cheaper to repaint things, yeah, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's poorly executed. The show's first seasons are a testament to the artist's ingenuity and a prime example of "if there's a will, there's a way." My boyfriend and I spotted a repainted recycling bin, the type used in his university, being used as the main part of a turnstile. Here's a link to a subreddit dedicated to spotting everyday objects being used as props, I also went and inputted "Expanse" in the searchbar for you, so you can see a few examples right away of everyday objects either repurposed wholesale or used as parts for props: www.reddit.com/r/Thatsabooklight/search/?q=the%20expanse&restrict_sr=1 My favourites from The Expanse that I found on there have to be: 1. the camplight-tripod mining charge because of its simplicity 2. the crash couches being assembled from more junk than you can wave your fist at, because the crash couches look fantastic and I really want to see an official breakdown of how they made them. Anyway, I hope from now on you'll be a little more forgiving when you spot an everyday object used as a prop, because just about every sci-fi, no matter the budget, employs this practice. If you look up the name of your favourite sci-fi series/movies on that subreddit I linked you (r/thatsabooklight), there's a very high chance it'll bring up a whole host of results Of course, maybe I misunderstood what you meant and you didn't mean "cheap" like "thrifty" but cheap like "poorly made," in which case you might want to consider why you'd consider the two synonymous, because every prop department has a budget.
Amos was my favorite character in the books, and I have been so astounded at what an amazing job Wes Chatham has done with his character. Prior to this interview, I felt it was definitely a study in minimalistic acting-never doing too much, and letting the writing and scene partners carry the day, but watching Chatham in this interview, it's clear he's put a ton of detailed work into embodying Amos in the physicality of the character. Kudos to you, Mr. Chatham. Thanks for taking your job so seriously. I'm glad you enjoy the character, because we sure enjoy your performances.
I remember when the first season came out I thought he was terribly miscast, and now I couldn’t possibly imagine anyone else playing him. He just embodies him so well.
Well, then you need to see more ;) Expanse is definitely top 5, but give a try to these: Farscape, Babylon 5, Blake´s 7 (regarding stories, obviously not props, lol), then as mentioned before BSG, and perhaps Firefly. Then come back for more Expanse. Season 5 will be awesome. For me, Farscape will always win, btw.
Not including any of the Star Trek incarnations is absolute blasphemy. Sure, post 2003 Star Trek is questionable at best, but let's give respect where respect is due.
I love the whole crew, but yeah, Amos has a special place in my heart simply because of his backstory, what he’s been through, and how he still tries to find a person to be his conscience. He knows he’s not normal in that way. He knows he needs someone to act as a compass for him. Wes Chatham completely embodies Amos in the show. Perfect casting for the whole crew, really.
I love that he consulted a psychologist on "The Churn" - I know nothing about the books. Him, Drummer and Naomi are the scene stealers on this show. Avarsarala is amazing ofc, and Bobbie. I just love this show.
There are slight details that make a huge difference. Amos is a sociopath, not a psychopath. Both or them have antisocial behavior, but its from different causes. A psychopath is amoral. Meaning he doesnt have morals. There is no right or wrong. They can be deceitful. There is nothing wrong there to them. A sociopath is a moral being. However, his morality is different from the average. They have a concept of right and wrong, and although it may have some common ground, the differences make a huge difference. Both are casted away from society for that reason. They are socially awkward. Having said this. Amos knows perfectly that he is a sociopath. He can create some social interaction with the overlap of his moral model, but he also realizes that "you are not that guy, he is that guy". Thats why he took Naomi as his moral compass at the begging, to keep himself in check in case he had bad judgement, but then embraced the rest of the crew when he realized she isnt reliable alone, as she is able to deceit. So now the entire crew is his moral compass.
@@addos999 It is implicit. The fact that i can understand Amos to perfection is both, because i know the difference of the concepts and Wes is able to deliver to perfection to let me know which one he is. I gave you a detailed explanation of why the actor is fucking amazing so you can understand the depth of the character and you took it like a personal attack. Bravo.
Wes Chatham's work on his Amos character has paid off HUGE. There are moments in his acting, subtle moments, that are so true to reading between the lines of the character that as a survivor of sexual abuse and bisexual, he's scarily relatable.
I love the books so much I’m crying learning for the first time that Wes is putting so much effort into bringing this character he also loves to screen.
best characters on the show, Amos and Avasarala. The show is already legendary. If it goes through all 9 books (9-10 seasons), it will be even more so.
The Expanse is the BEST show on tv and by far the best SYFY show ever produced. I cannot get enough! I watch the episodes over and over. Please keep airing The Expanse!
8 books out with a final 9th to come. They've covered the first 4 books with the first 4 seasons. 9 seasons seems like the end point and I do hope it gets there.
@@sarge019l4 I'm guessing they're gonna truncate books 5 and 6 into next year, and then do 7-9 over 2-3 years. That would get the show to 7 or 8 series, which is a great run for an SF show.
Out of all the Expanse characters, Amos is the most fascinating to watch. Wes owns this like Jackie Earle Haley owned Rorschach, or Avery Brooks owned Ben Sisko. It's just a treat to watch his mind work through everything he's had to deal with. This was a show I didn't know I needed!
When I first started watching The Expanse I wasn’t sure what to make of Amos, but he quickly became one of my favourite characters from any TV show. Love the contrast between Wes as a person and Amos as a character and I absolutely cannot wait for season 5.
I just finished season 4 last night, really good show. Amos was brilliant in it. Can't wait to see what season 5 brings, hopefully it isn't the longest wait!
The budget didn't change much. They are using some new hardware, for the CGI, but most of the "better" production is from increased experience and using existing sets. This may be the best TV production, per dollar, of any show made in the last 10 years.
Hands down, this is the best television show I have ever seen...It is science based, no fantasy, or vampires, and the characters are people you can relate to...The dialogue is real and they have nailed the stupidity and greed of humans...Bravo to the writers, the actors and the special effects folks...You all are rock stars...
After 40 years of watching Sci Fi, this is the best, most intelligent & future realistic I've ever seen. Its so raw, emotional, tech savvy and so wonderfully scripted. And you fall in step behind the actors so quickly, none of which i've ever seen before. Kudos to the casting, writers, directors and the amazing cast. This show is a blessing.
Wes's little "thank you" at the start was touching. Tested's "Still Untitled" is how I heard about "The Expanse" in the first place. I've burned through all the books and am loving the differences between the books and the show. Thanks Adam!
Glad Wes took a moment to thank Adam for all of the work he's put in to support The Expanse, Adam has been one of the show's most devout champions with his platform.
Watching The Expanse and Wes, Steven, Dominique and everyone else on AND off set just washes away my darkest days. I can imagine how much joy they bring to anyone they meet.
Was instantly the scene I was thinking of. It was awesome! The smile on his face when he gets hit and then the look on the others face when he see’s the pure joy that Amos feels after the hit and what is about to come!
The Expanse is easily one of the best shows I've ever seen, and Amos is easily my favorite character from the show. Truly incredible work, Wes. I never want the Expanse to end, but when it does I'm watching whatever you decide to be a part of next.
Chatham really appreciates his role and the fans who love him. I will watch him in anything because he puts his heart into doing this job and I shows in the final product. Gotta love That Guy.
I would love to meet Wes in person. He seems like such a friendly and humble guy. Thanks for all of your amazing work Wes. You and ALL of your colleagues have made The Expanse one of the greatest shows ever!
I love Amos, he's so direct which also makes him come off very comical sometimes when he's talking to people one minute but can flip to being very serious or violent almost instantly the next then carries on as if what he did was completely normal. Love the show and all the cast and I hope it goes on for many many more seasons.
It's great to know that Wes genuinely loves playing this character, and I hope he knows that it really does show in his performance and that fans appreciate it.
What I love about Wes in this role is that he does get Amos unlike some characters in other shows etc, Wes makes Amos from the novels come to life and yet is also his own unique .. take on it all, You see it there very clearly in the first Ep of Season 4 the 'phone call' that's 100% Amos, and I can't wait for next year and Season 5, because as Wes says we get to see what made Amos into Amos in many a way.
Amos is really the backbone of the books. Hes always there even when off screen making sure everything works. How he is on screen is exactly as I see it in print.
Indeed, he's the muscle and a great engineer. It seems like Naomi always saves the Roci with her brilliant ideas but Amos has done he's fair share. Hes that little devil on Holden's shoulder as well. haha!
I have been a fan of The Expanse since day one. Wes keep doing what you do brother because your portrayal of Amos is awesome. Thank you Adam for doing this interview. I cant wait to see what this next season has in store.
Wes mostly, but Wes and the rest of the cast & crew are going to be the reason I pick up this series when I have the time and money. Absolutely outstanding team
Robert Geier love this character, I totally buy into the cold blooded killer (I know that's not all he is) and don't doubt he would pull the trigger if he thought it needed to be done.
I don't usually enjoy interviews, especially with modern actors, but seeing the humility and appreciation from Wes Chatham for the show and his fans...it is so refreshing.
Oddly enough, I had my wife watch The Expanse (seasons 1, 2 & 3 re-watch) and now Season 4 with me, which she thoroughly enjoyed. Now I'm gonna have to re-watch Firefly & Serenity. Hope she likes it too.
The demeanor is not so odd. This interview alludes to it, and what he reveals to Holden this season, reveal critical reasons for this. The slow reveal of his backstory, each season, is amazing.
I love Firefly and Jayne, but Amos is a much more interesting character from the beginning, honestly. Jayne is fun, but Amos has depth that Jayne didn't show as much comparatively in one season.
Pullo and Amos having a bar fight would be one of the most delightful things put to film. And you’d know right after they would be sitting in the debris, drinking and laughing.
Watching Amos reclaim his humanity over the years has been one of the best things I've ever seen on television. He's such an inspiring character; he makes me want to get into better shape, to be my own mechanic, to be good with my hands, to be a problem solver, to be a survivalist, to be a more loyal friend, to be less afraid and more confident---I could go on forever. Wes is a beautiful guy and he's played Amos beautifully; I'll be sad when the show is over. I just hope they give him the ending he deserves (i.e., a happily ever after).
Wow, this ticks so many boxes for me. I absolutely love Adam's boundless enthusiasm for the craft of movie making and for sci-fi. Combine that with the The Expanse, a story I came to belatedly but enjoy so much. Toss in Wes Chatham, who took what could have been a two-dimensional character and created a role so intriguingly nuanced and complex. What a joy to see these two passionate, talented people just nerding out over what they clearly love to do. The fact that Wes seems sincerely, genuinely appreciative of his fanbase is just icing on the cake.
OMG I didnt want this bit to end. What a great, GREAT, I dont even want to call it an interview... more of a buddy buddy talk with Adam, Wes, and the rest of us all! Such a good energy and wonderful conversations!!
The Expanse is just golden. I knew about the series when it started, but never had time to watch it, but many in Elite Dangerous community were talking about it endlessly. Now when I started watching it, I was kinda lost with the plot, but when it all become merging together, I started to love it. And Amos. Yeah. Initially I did not like his character, he felt like an asshole, but when you started to notice all the different things about it, his role begun to glow. -You're not that guy. You're not that guy. -I am that guy Perfection in acting. Brilliant. Just brilliant and Wes earns really better movie roles.
Chatham for best actor at the next awards! That wide eyed wild angry face he pulls when struck by the Corp security chief ep10s4 was some of the best acting I’ve seen in a long time! His performances thus far have, in my humble opinion, been the highlight of the show and Amos is hands down my favourite character in The Expanse to date. His performance is so convincingly believable that when I see a picture of him I don’t see Chatham, i see Amos! For the audience, believability is what makes the difference between a good show and an unequivocally brilliant piece of entertainment like The Expanse and Chatham is bringing it buy the truckload and then some.
Everyone from the Expanse has been so gracious in interviews and seem legitimately excited and invested in the project. It is refreshing to see in an age of nostalgia exploitation that real passion still exists.
The Expanse is the best Sci Fi show on TV. I would even put it up as one of the best period. And Amos is the best character on the show. Wes does such an amazing job. His growth as a character on the show is amazingly great. Already can't wait for season 5.
Up through the years, there have been several good sci-fi series and films, but I really can't remember any that have captured my mind as strongly as the Expanse has. Such a good story, and such good actors! I love it!
Would you believe I've only just found The Expanse. What a superb series! It's the Sci-Fi Gold Standard. Amos is my favorite character; a likeable psychopath. Great to see his growth as he's gradually become more self aware. Wes delivers Amos with considerable skill. That subtlety isn't always obvious but it really shows through. Bring on the next 5 seasons!
This is the best interview with Wes I have ever seen. Adam draws out amazing details! Adam really gets the show, the science and the characters. He seems to really get the trust of the actor. Thank you so much Adam!!!
There's a lot of Amos that reminds me of growing up autistic without knowing I am.. (didn't figure it out till I was 31, am 34 now) The insane anger that'd come out of nowhere, the not knowing how to deal with a situation or what to say and doing random things without meaning to and then afterwards standing there going "what/why the F did I just do/say that for?!" Luckily I wasn't THAT psycho though.
At first I had a real tough time figuring out what was really motivating Amos and why he acts the way he does, but as the show goes on and we see more of the character, I find myself really enjoying him and Chatham's performance. It's really cool seeing him discuss the effort he invests into the character and just how much love there is for the character and the show
Thatd be cool except tgat hes way too tall. If we get a new Wolverine (do we really have to ASAP?) id like him to be at least a bit more canon. Wolvie is SHORT
My mom and I just couldn't stop watching this show, the characters we love love this show - all the characters, but Amos those eyes and "I'm that guy" - lol. You play this character superbly - talking about manifesting a character- just wow!

@Clogged Nostrils Sooo much better. The Expanse strikes an amazing balance between "Sci-Fi" and realism/physics/science that I've never seen before.

@@4EverLearning757 Cheers, mate. Enjoy.
The scene Amos got punched in is the one where he stares at the guy who hit him and he says "thank you" with a crazy look in his eye.
@Christopher H. Meuse I think he thanked him because it gave him an excuse to beat his ass.
Yeah, and that look in Murtry's eyes as he realises he's totally misjudged Amos and SERIOUSLY screwed up by punching him...
I figured it was either that scene or the one where he had to provide cover for Naomi and the woman who did what she did. Sorry don't wasn't to give too much away. The scene where Mirty pun he's him was so much fun, I loved it!!!
@@CRF-2013 I wondered afterwards whether or not Amos just beat him up or did he kill him?
"it was at this point, Murtry realised, he'd fucked up".
James Holden was my least favorite. He was a self righteous jerk. Amos struck me as much more pragmatic.
I believe hes the only cast member who had read all the books beforehand. Hes one of us.
Dominique has read the books too! 💜
it's pretty buck wild that he seems like such a nice dude compared to who he's playing.
@@ButterBallTheOpossum That's why we like him as a character.
CryHavoc yes bro, my fave
Amos Burton: “You got it, Chrissie.”
Chrisjen Avasarala: “Don’t fucking call me that. I’m the acting secretary-general of the United Nations, not your favorite stripper.”
Amos spread his hands. “Could be room for both.”
Comedy gold right there. Fuckin love amos, no filter is life!!
I just read both characters lines in their voices, such comedic gold on delivery from Wes
If you pay attention Chrisjen smiles after he says that. I'm not sure if that was "in character" or it was just the actress corpsing.

If this is the future of TV I can't wait for it.
@@Vasharan Well said, could not have said it better.
@@Vasharan
This is very true.
But what is also engaging is that Amos is so engagingly awkward and honest in human relationships.
It's like the Dexter of the early seasons before Dex became a douche.
What he has really nailed as an actor is that "calm rage" the character exudes and it comes out in dialog like "…I am that guy" or "…I am free now."
The confidence in every situation... living in the moment
“Alright, I’m gonna need that gun back.”
Wow, that's so impressive that Chatham put in so much effort to understand the character, the childhood and even talked with a psychologist to understand how certain childhood trauma would manifest itself in behavior and mannerisms. No wonder he does such an amazing job at portraying the character.
"i'm free right now"
Masterful delivery
That was one of my favorite lines. They got a *great* cast for season 4. Though I wish they had followed the book more closely... but time limitations, and budget. And they wanted to get more into Nemesis Game arc. So understandable.
Would have been nice to see Havelock again.
My favorite line for sure..lol
And a year later, Amos before going to the shower "I hate waiting." is similarly awesome.
"I'm that guy."
Love that scene...
This channel actually has an interview with the guy, and he talks about some of the cooler, more made-from-scratch stuff here:
th-cam.com/video/CF65tmxtkuo/w-d-xo.html
I have to say, the boots are a stroke of genius!
The show's first seasons are a testament to the artist's ingenuity and a prime example of "if there's a will, there's a way."
My boyfriend and I spotted a repainted recycling bin, the type used in his university, being used as the main part of a turnstile.
Here's a link to a subreddit dedicated to spotting everyday objects being used as props, I also went and inputted "Expanse" in the searchbar for you, so you can see a few examples right away of everyday objects either repurposed wholesale or used as parts for props:
www.reddit.com/r/Thatsabooklight/search/?q=the%20expanse&restrict_sr=1
My favourites from The Expanse that I found on there have to be:
1. the camplight-tripod mining charge because of its simplicity
2. the crash couches being assembled from more junk than you can wave your fist at, because the crash couches look fantastic and I really want to see an official breakdown of how they made them.
Anyway, I hope from now on you'll be a little more forgiving when you spot an everyday object used as a prop, because just about every sci-fi, no matter the budget, employs this practice. If you look up the name of your favourite sci-fi series/movies on that subreddit I linked you (r/thatsabooklight), there's a very high chance it'll bring up a whole host of results
Of course, maybe I misunderstood what you meant and you didn't mean "cheap" like "thrifty" but cheap like "poorly made," in which case you might want to consider why you'd consider the two synonymous, because every prop department has a budget.
The Expanse is by far the best science fiction I have ever seen.
Fascinating.
Nah, not even in the same league as BSG, and this last season 4 was so boring don’t know if there will be a season 5 in the cards for me
Well, then you need to see more ;) Expanse is definitely top 5, but give a try to these: Farscape, Babylon 5, Blake´s 7 (regarding stories, obviously not props, lol), then as mentioned before BSG, and perhaps Firefly. Then come back for more Expanse. Season 5 will be awesome.
For me, Farscape will always win, btw.
Not including any of the Star Trek incarnations is absolute blasphemy. Sure, post 2003 Star Trek is questionable at best, but let's give respect where respect is due.
It really is terrific. I prefer the books over the series though.
@Dream Theory Altered carbon season 1 of course because season 2 never happened in my book
I really respect the fact that Wes appreciates the fandom and does the work to get into the characters head.
I love that he consulted a psychologist on "The Churn" - I know nothing about the books. Him, Drummer and Naomi are the scene stealers on this show. Avarsarala is amazing ofc, and Bobbie. I just love this show.
Bobbie is stupid hot, too.

you made a slightly psychopathic character somewhat likeable through your detailed and nuanced performance. great work wes! u a great actor
He's not a psychopath though. He has ptsd and autism.

What a nice guy, I hope this show gets at least 10 seasons.

And will mess up whoever needs it.
I really really can't wait for Season 5, Nemesis Games, this group of actors are really gonna shine with the source material and now Amazon's money :)
Better not take 15 months to airdate.
The budget didn't change much. They are using some new hardware, for the CGI, but most of the "better" production is from increased experience and using existing sets. This may be the best TV production, per dollar, of any show made in the last 10 years.
Nemesis Games was incredible and I cannot wait to see it in Season 5. And after that it just gets even more crazy!
It's so awesome to see an actor who genuinely loves the source material from which he's working.
Wes,we all think you do it fantastically, and thank you for that. Adam, you're just a wonderful example of humanity as always.

Hes that little devil on Holden's shoulder as well. haha!

Much like Jayne Cobb, the sidekick muscle becomes super popular because of there odd demeanor. I love the character.
He is definitely a bit like Jayne. Which makes me like the show even more!
Ohhh Amos needs a Vera
I love Firefly and Jayne, but Amos is a much more interesting character from the beginning, honestly. Jayne is fun, but Amos has depth that Jayne didn't show as much comparatively in one season.
I'm rewatching the show for the 3rd time. I'm on the 1st Eros episode now. I'm reading the books also. Still love that show.
The show is so good, and i never understood how the show looks so damn good on a tv budget
And it looks even better in season 4, they have the same budget but have acces to Amazon's VFX which would otherwise be way too expansive.
I love the respect and admiration the cast shows for the behind the scenes crews.
Amos reminds me of Rome's Titus Pullo, that hyperviolent fearless best friend you wish you had, and whom you'd never want to cross.
Helium Road another fantastic character
Too funny: In the subtitles Rocinante becomes Ross and Dante.

Damn, that was a great interview. Thank you so much for doing these Adam!!

-I am that guy
Perfection in acting.
Brilliant. Just brilliant and Wes earns really better movie roles.
One of my favorite characters of all time in one of my favorite shows/universes. What a treat to see you two talk shop!
Wes Chatham plays Amos perfectly to the point where when I reread the books it's Amos I see. He just nails him as a character.
Even his voice... Body language... everything is perfect.
Amos is incredible and that's thanks to the detailed work Wes Chatam puts in. Fantastic performance and brilliant character!
I love it!
Love the show, loved this interview, Amos is the man!
Holy Crap!!! The on earth arc is going to be IN Season 5! So amazing!!!
Me too! Your comment was helpful to me.
Hi, I am going through similar things what you went through...
Not sure what to do anymore.
@@nirvan7253 talk to people about it. The Autistic Adults reddit is actually a kind of nice place to talk to others.
Wes is definitely the reason I love the Expanse so much. Awesome guy, fantastic actor!
Amos such a great character and Wes is killing' it! Would also love to see Wes in other productions outside of Expanse one day.
At first I had a real tough time figuring out what was really motivating Amos and why he acts the way he does, but as the show goes on and we see more of the character, I find myself really enjoying him and Chatham's performance. It's really cool seeing him discuss the effort he invests into the character and just how much love there is for the character and the show
Can we get Wes as the next Wolverine by any chance?
Yeah!
Thatd be cool except tgat hes way too tall. If we get a new Wolverine (do we really have to ASAP?) id like him to be at least a bit more canon. Wolvie is SHORT
@@gateauxq4604 Hugh Jackman is tall, too. I think he is 1,80m tall.
@@gateauxq4604 That didn’t stop Hugh Jackman.
Galactusz007 - Heh. Huge Ackman. Heh.
My mom and I just couldn't stop watching this show, the characters we love love this show - all the characters, but Amos those eyes and "I'm that guy" - lol. You play this character superbly - talking about manifesting a character- just wow!
