True, however I think that it's the "...he's my best friend in the whole world..." that's obviously the most touching and powerful line in the entire scene. Look at the reactions of literally every one of the reactors here, and they all have an obvious "aww..." moment at that. Conversely every one of them predicts the whole "I am that guy" ending - true, they all have a brief moment of "Yeah, right on!" but it's not anywhere as meaningful because it's been built up to and telegraphed across the entire episode.
@@MisterMac4321 I don't think anyone would disagree on that point. I do think it's the actors' performances that make that one work so well Terry Chen as Prax delivers the line with such earnest care that we truly believe Prax was changed by his ordeal to arrive at this moment. Wes Chatham's response as Amos is so perfect for the moment, I swear I could see the character thinking "I can *do* that? Be someone's friend?"
Indeed. Way too often shows these days are obsessed with "subverting expectations", which often just comes across as lazy writing where things come out of left field just because, with nothing leading up to it. This scene sets up expectations and then delivers on them, and it works perfectly BECAUSE it makes sense and BECAUSE it's what we expect to happen given what we know of Amos's character.
Prax telling Mei Amos is his best friend in the whole world, and than Amos saving Prax's soul, is the softest, most genuine and purest thing I've ever seen in ANY scifi series, ever!!
It is - And at the exact same moment it is one of the most hard-edged ruthless badass moments of all time. To combine those two and make it WORK is just... (chef’s kiss) perfection in writing!
The moment that I *really* give them credit for is that slight pause Amos has right after the airlock door closes. As Amos ushers his 'best friend in the whole world' away from becoming a murderer, the airlock door closing is like flipping a switch, and you can see just from the slight change in Chatham's posture that Amos has put on his "game face" way before we actually see that face.
Why Amos is the most scary character: he was very calm. He chose this, instead of losing his temper. I bet he didn't even feel much adrenaline. He simply knew that prax was his friend, and prax needed to be a dad, not a killer.
The whole thing with Amos is his very tough childhood and abuse growing up literally made him the full blown psychopath, also just Autistic too, so he has a really hard time understanding others and actually having feelings about things. In the series we start to see him getting better at reading people, but overall he is still very cold and surface level. He had no feelings about this, but he was a kid taken against his will, and he remembers how bad that was, and this person is also now close to him and very caring, so the Doc has wronged Amos by these actions
That’s what makes Amos the most terrifying character. He has that calm fury. He doesn’t need to resort to blowing off the handle he just proceeds with violence while not even raising his heartbeat.
Wonderful work by the writers to build to the point where we can understand how important it is to Amos to hear Prax call him "my best friend in the whole world", and marvelous work by the actors to sell the writing. Damn, The Expanse was good.
Two things (Aside from the usual) that struck me with this scene. When Amos turns around, his eyes are like a shark's. Dead, flat, devoid of life or light. That and even at that range, he's pro enough to STILL use his weapon's sight. He doesn't risk the kill or the wasted ammo on half-assing it. He sights in and pulls like he would under combat conditions.
This was the best scene to me in the Expanse series. It shows so much about Amos's character and how he does see that he rather not have an innocent and good man lose his soul and choses to take that blood on his hands. This shows that Amos is not just an heartless killer but a true good man.
I saw someone refer to him as a Sin Eater, and sometimes I dont like that he does things to keep Holdens hands clean, but sometimes I love when he does it
I don't think Amos has really ever had a "best friend" per se. To take the weight from Prax and make sure there was justice served is so on brand for him.
Many forgot that Amos divides people in 3 cathegories: the ones to kill, the ones to follow and the ones to protect. Prax, Naomi, Alex and kids are obviously people that he is ready to even sacrifice himself to ensure their safety. In other comment section I pointed out that he, Ashford and Drummer are the best written characters in the series.
There's also a deeper aspect of Amos' character, stemming from his life back in Baltimore: He cannot abide anyone who would endanger, abuse or exploit a child.
You can see it in his eyes...once Prax says that, Amos understood the mission. What do you do for your best friend? Anything you can, anything they can't.
I love how the subtle emphasis is on *am* in "I *am* that guy." Not *I*, as if he was bragging about it or putting himself forward... it almost sounds like a realization or acceptance.
@@jacobjackson1541 Amos doesn't take pride in who he is, but he doesn't deny it either. It takes great writing to lead up to dialog that is absolutely predictable, but tantalizes the audience so with so much anticiplation that it must be said to be satisfying.
Oh my God! Someone finally made a compilation of my favorite moment in all of tv! Everything was so incredible in this scene! The acting, directing, writing and score! It still brings tears to my eyes seeing the torment in Prax's eyes and his best friend saving his soul! Thank you for this!
It gets kind of overshadowed by the "I am that guy" bit, but the second best line in this scene is Prax very casually saying "I just need to talk to Dr. Strickland for a minute." Gives me chills every time I hear it
1. Villain thoroughly in dire need of a killing. Check. 2. The right man for the job is there and ready to go. Check. 3. Delicious foreshadowing that didn't drown out the moment. Check. 4. Added bonus of the touching moment where Amos prevents an innocent man from becoming like him. Check.
I feel like this is one of those scenes that, when it started, we all knew what was coming. It's been done so many times and gawd most of em are cheesy. And then Amos turned around, and there was nothing cheesy about it. I can't really say bless the writing cuz it's pretty standard stuff. But bless the director of this episode, bless the lighting and set designer, and hoooooooly crap bless Wes Chatham for that delivery.
Amos is easily one of the best written characters on the Expanse, which considering the strength of the writing overall is really saying something. He's introduced and often introduces himself as the hyper-violent pet-psychopath, but what they build on is the fact that Amos sort of knows that violence and killing have damaged him. Amos knows he's a monster and he saw for a moment that Prax was, justifiably, ready to corrupt himself with that same taint, and he stepped in to prevent Prax from doing something that would likely haunt him for the rest of his life. Really shows how far Amos has come, barely halfway through the show's run.
The Expanse is the only series I've ever wanted to watch this other people's reactions to, and this scene is definitely one of the best in the series. Thanks for the compilation.
I do have a request for another Amos scene. From the end of the fourth season when the Roci is heading home. The corporate guy who tried to throw everyone under the bus punches Amos. The smile and sincere thank you Amos gives him is honestly terrifying.
This was one of my favourite moments in the book, and absolutely had me crying from the emotional impact of it all. And when the series caught up to this point I was a little concerned that the impact wouldn't have that same hit - but this scene is perfect and I cried like a baby again.
Terry and Wes have such powerful rapport! Ted Atherton (Strickland) is of course excellent. This chapter is such an emotional ride and the actors are invested in their performance. I would watch Wes in anything, and Mr. Chen is leading man material for real. Loved this compilation.
i love this scene in many levels, one because is a baddas scene full of heart but also let us know the type of character building this series do so good, but also by doing this, he is shielding the "normal guy" from doing something he will regret his whole life out of vengeance and wrath, Amos knows this pain very well, he doesnt want his "best friend" to go trough it, and thats why he responds like this, after hearing those words, he know hes a good persona and a good father, he doesnt want him to taint himself with murder. Also this is as i picture soldiers in te battlefield and what the door closing represent, they shield us from having to be figthing to mantain the normal life we have, even if it means they have to do things that will haunt them the rest of their lives and also close the door so we dont have to see and feel guilty for them............. this show is gonna be miss and while a couple of episodes in the 5th season dragged a little but and the 6th was way to rushed, it was astill a hell fo a ride, i hope it get taken again, the 6th season remade and get to adapt the rest of the books
In my humble opinion, this scene is the best scene in any show i have ever seen, it encompasses everything about the show, about Amos and how multi-layered a charater he is. Doesn't get any better than this!
I watched this series again because its that good! As a sci fi fan especially Star Trek! This scene is the most emotional and satisfying scene i have ever experienced yes it was some what predictable as soon as Amos said your not that guy! But as soon as he turned round & said I am that guy I bet everyone who watched it experienced that emotion when the bad guy is going to pay! But in this case it was the best its ever been done! Simple word to the point and bang he's dead no fight! no mercy! no escape! Just I am that guy & bang! Brilliant!
Amos’ reaction here is perfect. That Prax trusts him with Mei even though he knows Amos is violent and a bad ass tells Amos something about the sincerity of Prax’s statement. After this, Amos would be willing to destroy the world Itself for them.
The man who helps me find my daughter WOULD be my best friend in the whole world. Anything he'd want from me, however I could help him, ever in his life after that would be his, no questions asked.
Absolutely. And the actions of Amos are clearly him reacting to that revelation, that here was someone who truly cared about him and wasn't afraid to express it openly...how could he not protect him, even from himself?
I've watched this scene many times and it used to bother me that as the audience, you don't see Amos open the door and walk in. But I think the creators are putting us in Prax and Strickland's POV. They were both so stressed from the intense situation they're in, that neither of them even notice Amos opening the door.
Avasarala is a badass cause she is one of the few people in the serie that have understood Amos from the first moment she have seen him. A cold killer.
Have to say this is one of the best moments in The Expanse, I loved it. We follow Holden as the main protagonist through out the series, but I really believe its more about Amos finding who he really is in humanity. By far the best character i've seen in any series. And can I just say, this series for me has been just about the best series I have ever seen. And i'm really hoping from here it becomes a big thing, similar to what star trek has been over the decades. It was so well put together and deserves to have so many spin off's.
Best line added by the show, hands down. One of the things I love about it is the acknowledgement that Hollywood style revenge, though really cathartic, can mess up someone and Amos wants to make sure Prax can continue to be the father needs for Mai.
@@VayaKahvi That's why I said it was ironic. Prax himself wasn't the retribution. But if Prax had not himself decided Strickland "needed killin'" he could have told Amos not to do it. Amos wouldn't have understood, but he'd have followed Prax's direction.
I don't know anything about this TV series, so I don't understand the context, but damn, those are some pretty emotional reactions. I might start watching it when I have spare time.
Well worth it. Fantastic show. They do space travel and physics better than any other sci-fi. Plus the story and characters are just excellent. Highly recommended.
While there were some 1-dimensional henchmen, I would argue that throughout the series, Strickland was the only villain who had no reasonable aspect whatsoever to his viewpoint.
I love that for all his flaws Amos knew what Prax was about to do and understood it would destroy him as a person and so Amos as the flawed broken person with blood already on his hands saved Prax from the situation and then dealt with it.
Amos is one of my favorite characters in the Expanse. We share a lot of the same thoughts and manners, though I must confess I think a bit more before acting.
Amos sees himself as already being more damaged than anyone else could be. His soul is already tainted. As a result, he does the hard/awful things. So that the people he cares about don't have to taint their souls in the way his already has been. It's his way of showing love.
Amos is a great character, he is totally capable of killing someone without even a seconds thought, but as we see after his encounter on the transport ship to the moon, he knows when it's ok to kill and when it is not to. He is a very good very well trained soldier, but not a psychopath.
In book 2 calibans war, amos goes into why he wants to save Mei. He explains to Naomi in a round about way that his mom was a hooker who got knocked up, and was kept on the streets because "jons" would pay more to bang a pregnant chick. And after he was born he was forced into that life as a little kid, and he says something to the affect of once the kid is born they dont just dissappear, not right away anyway, they have uses to or they do until theyre all used up. And he says he'd like to find Mei before someone uses her up. It really made me think about what kind of person that kind of abuse from that young an age would produce. And what i came up with was yeah that guy
Never hunt a target in their home/territory. These are places they know, you don't. Make them come to you in your territory so the advantage is yours, not theirs.
Amos is the man. Making the hard choice is always a hard decision, but the more you do it the easier it gets to justify. It's never the right choice, but at the same time it's not always the wrong choice. Definitely a paradoxical conclusion. Prax is a good man and Amos knows what he is. He doesn't want prax to live with what he was going to do. I can relate
If Prax had said, "Let him live," Amos would have done so. He wouldn't have understood why, but he'd have followed the lead of the person he knew was moral and good. But because Prax had clearly decided Strickland should be killed, Amos protected his moral compass.
It's a dam shame that Amazon cut the funding to this show... Amos was my 2nd favourite character, the first was Alex. The cowboy Martin because he made me laugh.
It's a tribute to the acting and directing that "I am that guy" is the most expected line in the scene and it *still* impacts with that power.
The writing in this episode really is phenomenal, dr Strickland says all the stuff that just makes you as the audience want to punch him in the face.

I've watched this scene many times and it used to bother me that as the audience, you don't see Amos open the door and walk in. But I think the creators are putting us in Prax and Strickland's POV. They were both so stressed from the intense situation they're in, that neither of them even notice Amos opening the door.
Amos and Avasarala, my two favourite characters in the series.
Why Avasarala?
@@axl1002 Season 2 episode 6. when she makes Errinwright sh1t his pants with her hellfire chat lol
@@mkocel It looks like she learned to talk to people from Mexican serials, I've seen kids acting better.
@@axl1002 because she's a bad bitch
Avasarala is a badass cause she is one of the few people in the serie that have understood Amos from the first moment she have seen him. A cold killer.
one of the best lines in TV history with the best delivery possible
You should have added the version with The Expanse cast crew watching that scene. Cara Gee and Wes Chatham's reactions were priceless :)
Wait what? Link please? NVM, found it.

I'm not crying, you are
This is the scene that convinced me that Wes Chatham should be the MCU's Wolverine
I dig it.
“I am that guy” is one of the coldest lines Iv ever heard
Don't know what was more emotional " my best friend in the whole world " over "I am that guy"
Amos took it to the next level. Aside from Adam Baldwin in Serenity he pulls off this character perfectly.
I'd say he's RDJ/Tony Stark good. He IS that guy.
I think I watch this series annually…. “I am that guy“ remains one of the best lines…
Wes Chatham is the most perfectly cast actor ever. If you read the books, Wes is exactly the description of Amos. No casting adaptation needed.
yeah Amos starts annoying, a seemingly dumb brute in the books and TV show - but quickly opens up to be the best character
that scene works so well on an emotional level, that we can forgive Amos just tunneled through a closed door.
Amos is that kind of guy you want as a friend but never as an enemy ^^
Have to say this is one of the best moments in The Expanse, I loved it. We follow Holden as the main protagonist through out the series, but I really believe its more about Amos finding who he really is in humanity. By far the best character i've seen in any series.
And can I just say, this series for me has been just about the best series I have ever seen. And i'm really hoping from here it becomes a big thing, similar to what star trek has been over the decades. It was so well put together and deserves to have so many spin off's.
The world needs that guy.
Perhaps the hardest line I've ever heard in a series.
Best line added by the show, hands down. One of the things I love about it is the acknowledgement that Hollywood style revenge, though really cathartic, can mess up someone and Amos wants to make sure Prax can continue to be the father needs for Mai.
Ironically, and certainly intended so by the writers, "Praxidike" was the Greek goddess of revenge and retribution.
@@kirkdarling4120 He didn't do it himself, but Prax was the catalyst to make it happen.
@@709mash I'll give it a try. I tend to either like or loathe TV series.
@tehui The first season takes a while to get going, but stick with it. Seasons 2 and 3 are amazing
Oddly enough.... I didn't see Amo's line coming. It hit really well.
That was my favorite line in the whole series...I am that guy
Best and most confusing line: "He's my best friend in the whole world." Which world? They hang out most of the time in space. 😂
They've shown that fables and figures of speech continue into the future. Belters who have never seen an insect speak of "kicking the hornet's nest."
I hope the writers got to see this, and know well it was received! Top notch!
Amos was the best character on The Expanse. Had the best arc, the most development, the best lines.
This was an iconic scene!
That moment when the Strickland realizes that Amos wasn't sparing him, but sparing Prax.
2:20-Oh, he is.
Amos Burton, best character in the whole world...
The fact that he took a moment to get a solid bead down sights at point blank makes me wonder exactly where he shot him. Gotta be the face.
Strickland is the shows first *true* villain. you can argue other antagnosist were shades of grey, Strickland was just evil.
I would put Nguyen on the same pedestal. 😋
While there were some 1-dimensional henchmen, I would argue that throughout the series, Strickland was the only villain who had no reasonable aspect whatsoever to his viewpoint.
You can be a true villain with out being just evil.
thanks for this
To make it more META, we need the same reactors reacting to this video!
Have you seen the video of the cast watching this scene the first time?
"Daddy Daycare, Starring Amos"!
My favorite scene in the whole series
Amos is a simple man. If he's in your corner, you're gonna live to be old or go out in a blaze of glory.
Amos is the beast that's needed!
Really cute reactions :) Love it.
Best scene of all times!!
Champion level delivery.
Amos sees himself as already being more damaged than anyone else could be. His soul is already tainted. As a result, he does the hard/awful things. So that the people he cares about don't have to taint their souls in the way his already has been. It's his way of showing love.
Amos is a sin-eater.
Wes Chatham, awesome on so many levels.
Amos is a great character, he is totally capable of killing someone without even a seconds thought, but as we see after his encounter on the transport ship to the moon, he knows when it's ok to kill and when it is not to. He is a very good very well trained soldier, but not a psychopath.
Amos made us feel.
Easily one of my favorite moments in fiction.
haha I agree, one of my fave scenes! Damn they nailed this series! #teamamos
I loved the character of Alex, but the actor was scum. He needed to go.
@TheAn Onymous It's such a gorgeous show.
on the bright side (not really) that meant that I finally got to start reading the books. I strongly reccomend doing so to any fan of the show
Uncle Amos gonna take care of it.
Was Mei's whispered line "of course you do" after Prax said he loved her?
Why does that sound familiar?
Was it a throwaway line earlier in the series?
