Daniel Joseph Daly Born: November 11, 1873 One example of his exploits: Since the defensive positions surrounding the legation were badly damaged, the rest of the Marines headed off to gather reinforcements and supplies to rebuild the fortifications around the embassy. Private Daly volunteered to stay back and hold the fort while they were gone. That night, shit hit the fan. Dan was just hanging out, smoking a cigarette, when all of a sudden a huge force of Chinese Boxers started bull-rushing the American Embassy with torches, rifles, and various other weaponry raised above their heads, screaming like madmen. They had come to destroy the consulate, and Daly was the only man between this rampaging horde and the diplomatic legation. In the face of this seemingly unending onslaught, Dan Daly knew it was time to be a Marine. He jammed an ammunition belt into his squad machine gun, took a deep breath, and squeezed the trigger. The next morning, the rest of Private Daly's squad arrived at the barricade Daly had been charged with defending. Through the smoke and the carnage, they saw Dan Daly sitting on the fortifications puffing a smoke, surrounded by the bodies of 200 slain Boxers. For his actions in single-handedly defending the legation in the face of impossible odds, Private Daly received the Congressional Medal of Honor. BTW: he ran out of ammo and went hand to hand toward end of the fight..with knife, rifle butt, etc Another example: In 1917 the United States once again needed the help of Sergeant Daly. Around this time France and Germany were in the middle of the biggest and deadliest war the planet had ever seen, and the U.S. decided to send in the Marines to help kick some ass in "The Great War", as it was now being called. Well Daly sure as shit wasn't going to miss out on an opportunity to fight in a World War, so he shipped out at age 44. He fought in several campaigns with the American Expeditionary Force in France, and won combat medals three more times - once when he crawled out under heavy enemy fire and rescued a half-dozen wounded Marines who were pinned down, once when he single-handedly captured 13 German soldiers, and once when he took out a heavily-fortified German machine gun nest all by himself using nothing more than a handful of grenades and a Colt .45 Automatic. He was also wounded three times, but yeah right like that could slow him down. Daly's greatest moment in World War I came during the intense fighting at the Battle of Belleau Wood. Daly's Marines were in the middle of a shitstorm. They were outnumbered two-to-one, outgunned, and facing down the barrel of a veritable load of German machine gun nests. They had been pinned down for hours by a non-stop hail of artillery and gunfire, and things were looking bleak as hell for our boys. Well all of a sudden, just as things were looking hopeless, a lone figure jumped up onto the earthworks the American Marines had been using for cover. Sergeant Dan Daly looked down the line, clutched his rifle and shouted, "Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?" before charging out to meet the enemy. The men of the United States Marine Corps saw this act of bravery and decided, no, they did not want to live forever. They went "over the top" and charged the German positions. On 26 June 1917 the U.S. High Command in France received the following telegram: Woods now U.S. Marine Corps entirely. For his actions in the Belleau Woods, Sergeant Daly received the Navy Cross and the French Croix de Guerre. Semper Fi

What Desmond Doss is the true definition of bravery. Imagine spending a night behind enemy lines with no way to protect yourself surrounded by enemies with no way to defend yourself and still be able to pull 75 wounded men off the ridge that otherwise would die.

I appreciate that this is not 100% accurate. Nothing can be in these kinds of situations. But if only 1% was true, this man was a hero. This reminds me of Piper millen, who, at the order of his CO, played the pipes on Sword Beach during D day. He told his CO, Lord lovat, that playing the pipes was against regulations, and Lovat replied. Ah, but that's the English War Office. The adrenaline wore off... just like that!!!! Man was a machine!!!!
I remember Turners last words from cod
"No sacrifices too great, NOW GO!"
In real life he had to low crawl rescue a lot of those soldiers, if you haven't done a proper low crawl, you have no idea how tiring that is, let alone with a wounded soldier on your back and he did miles worth of that. He collapsed of pure exhaustion after he got the last soldier.
to pull that many adult men wearing their full gear to safety and keep going back for another one shows amazing will power.
He was just the vessel! Not to take anything away for this man but the lord gave him strength and protection. We should all be so blessed as to have that type of power flow thru us. In his name and all his glory god bless Desmond Doss
Even as a vessel, he was only human, so his will and determination, would of still helped him alongside God.
Heroism is an event, Private Doss made it his lifestyle
They ridiculed him for his beliefs, and yet he saved over 70 men in his company, thus earning their respect.
Most people thought differently back then
The adrenaline rush is so great this man is a great hero

I really Love this scene..so intense!😊
hes hero, every one is hero. Glad he saves heros.
As a veteran seeing the respect for the man who risked all to save every last survivor . those who fought in world war II deserve absolute respect those who earned the MOH are Legends
*A man who faced the bloodiest theater of war, the Pacific, without firing a shot, and became one of the greatest heroes of the Second World War by saving lives, his mission was accomplished Desmond doss...a great and blessed son of God*
This is smart and heroic. Giving priority to education means building nation in different dimension...it is vivid that everyone enjoys the fruit of discipline from this movies. 😅
I was proud to go thru fort Jackson, tank hill, in May of 1985. The same barracks that these guys trained in. I trained in. Wish I'd of known it back then. There was still ww2 training posters up. For map and terrain training, they actually had posters of naked women. I wish I could have kept a few of those posters.
As the Bible says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." God was with him because he believes.
When he said "...that, or a bullet" I kinda wish he had said, "Sorry sir, I don't carry a rifle"
A true hero! Confident in his belief!! I guess... consequence...!!!!!!!!!!
Before God, before their Mother's, they call for me.
The Medic's Creed.
I will come for you...
The LORD bless and keep all that bear that red cross on their uniforms. No braver man EVER went to battle.
I love this show... I love real heroes... God bless all real heroes...
"Are you wounded?"...They were all wounded, everyone of them that came back. All had the deepest wounds of all, of the mind.
2016 was the best year of my life. What i'd give to relive it.
The fact that Doss did what he did is beyond comprehension. Yet, no man should ever have needed to experience that horror. War is the epitome of human indecency.
This is one of the best WW2 movies ever made.
Mel is brilliant
I appreciate that this is not 100% accurate. Nothing can be in these kinds of situations.
But if only 1% was true, this man was a hero.
This reminds me of Piper millen, who, at the order of his CO, played the pipes on Sword Beach during D day.
He told his CO, Lord lovat, that playing the pipes was against regulations, and Lovat replied.
Ah, but that's the English War Office. You and I are both Scottish, and that doesn't apply"
They advanced to pegasus bridge under the Piper. Snipers could have taken him out but, according to sources, didn't.
He had no weapon, just a musical instrument, and survived that.
Insane
German prisoners all said the same thing; that he was clearly insane and therefore shooting him was needless.
And so the lord will sent his angel down to earth to protect and save the innocent from the firey pit.
Honestly, Desmond Doss deserves to be remembered in part as Saint Doss.
@@grubb2103 yes I agree with u on that one my friend.
@@grubb2103 yeah but non of us protistants do that kind of thing its one of the issues we had with the catholics they deafied mortals.
@@hardwirecars Deified? How so?
@@hardwirecars To be a saint isn't to be a deity. A saint is typically someone who's carried out great acts of kindness and overall good in the name of God. I myself am not directly religious but even I feel that Doss deserves to be remembered as such.
HE CALLED on the HOLY SPIRIT, when you do that,GOD turns it on and shuts it off, leaving bewildered men in AWE,DOSS ASKED
was not God, was his FAITH
@@JPVNG67 faith in who? GOD,GOD INTERVENED,he does it all the time,i've personally seen three miracles, one for me and two for others, and i don't care who believes me or not, why? FAITH
Sgt. York was another example of a godly man exercising faith on the battlefield.
Vince was surgical with that weapon.
In real life Doss represents the best of humanity…. He is a true hero…. He saved hundreds of lives…. He understood loyalty, service, duty, compassion, kindness, faith, hope and love. Doss let his actions speak for him. He inspires us to be better people. 😇😇😇🙏🙏🙏
This film has given great homage to the Christian faith and how the Ten Commandments play a role in each of our lives. History teaches how nations have fallen when the Presence of GOD is driven away by crime, that the Bible defines as sin, and the enemy of peace takes His place. Just look where we are now with the lawlessness everywhere. And these are times of peace.
So god aided Doss but let countless others die horrendous deaths. Explain that?
One of the best war movie scene 👍
Thats what i call a DI.....Divine Intervention at its best.🙏
That's faith in action. Amazing story
Andrew was born to play that role and , Doss prove again that the word of god is the most powerfully weapon you can have
That it definitely is intense and he saved so many soldiers as well.
Different backgrounds, different faiths, different ethnicities, different cultures, different beliefs, it all comes together in a honorable manner known as Brotherhood.
this movie is epic a real classic
A living Saint, any man would stop and stare.
Medal of honor, what a brave heart without any fire arms
I could watch this over, over again
I watched a video of him receiving a commendation from his church organization. He said:
"God gives men life, who was I to take it?"
Yes. Beautiful words.
An amazing man of faith and bravery. God bless his memory and those who lived and died .
More guts than you can string on a 40 mile fence.
The rest of the company coming to his aid, after he jumps over the edge is brave. In making sure that he survives to receive his CMOH from President Truman.
4:32 priceless !
Desmond Doss one of AMERICA GREATEST HEROES
3:24 pardon me for a sec but wouldnt the cloth just drag out from under sarge
Salute to the memory of this MAN among men!!!🇺🇸
Mel did a fantastic job with this!
Doss and others like him managed to square the circle; duty, sacrifice, service to your country without killing. Honour untarnished.
Fine, I’ll rewatch Hacksaw Ridge

1:08 That's one hell of a soldier. 2:36 What the fuck Doss, now you pick up a rifle. 3:28 you've done enough little guy, let's face facts. 4:09 SAVE THAT MAN AT ALL COSTS
Vince Voughn was a hell of a shot.
Desmond T. Doss risked his life fighting for our country, we owe him our gratitude...
“Awesome sauce!” Amazing scene. Great film. Champion Christian Hero!
How many bullets does that grease gun's magazine have?
Also...I feel his actual deeds are diminished by the Hollywood super hero portrayal.
Actually in real life Desmond's actions was more insane that they actually TONED it down to make it more believable.
Idk what it is, but this scene reminds me so much of the scene from "Enemy at the Gates"
Just an observation. Why didn’t the Japanese cut down the climbing nets? Would have prevented the marines from scaling the cliff
The climbing nets were anchored to the rim of the cliff. If you tried to cut them you would be exposed over the edge of the cliff.
@@salguodrolyat2594 makes sense. Thanks
Because both sides wanted the nets in place. For the Americans it was to scale the cliffs. For the Japanese it was because they wanted to know where the Americans were going to come from ie. Plan the killing zone. The cargo nets were in fact in the best interest of both parties. Odd as it sounds.
I watch this movie many times until now this movie is the best
Doss BELIEVED in God!.......With God, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!

About 75, give or take a few

According to the government 150. Doss said he thought it was more like 50. Either way the man is one of the greatest humans to walk this Earth.
