- During the last desperate days of WWII, a solitary prospector (Jorma Tommila) crosses paths with Germans on a scorched-earth retreat in northern Finland. While there is no direct translation for the Finnish word "sisu", this legendary ex-commando will embody what sisu means: a white-knuckled form of courage and unimaginable determination in the face of overwhelming odds. And no matter what the Germans throw at him, the one-man death squad will go to outrageous lengths to get his gold back - even if it means killing every last German in his path. Jorma Tommila played a magnificent role on this film
It's one of my best movies to watch. Loved to watch over and over. Sisu is an old man but has a strength and very dangerous old man, especially when you messed with his dog and his gold.

"Beware the old man in a young man's game" or another, more refined, version of it- "Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young."

Just to clarify, sisu is a Finnish word for "grit" or "guts" (difficult to translate into English), Aatami, the character, is like the embodiment of "sisu".

I knew a guy like this. He was a 70yr old Tractor tyre fitter. He seemed to be made of tungsten and cables and hard headedness. I never heard him speak.

Pretty good movie, too bad the director didn't opt to use a mock up of a German tank instead of a Russian T-55.

It's Sisu, a film inspired by First Blood and Simo Häyhä who was a Finnish sniper during the Winter War between Finland and Russia.
In sniper school we learned about him and he became a hero to me and a man that I still admire.
A brilliant man and one who should be known to anyone who shoots long distance.

@sterhh100 Irrespective of any propaganda, Simo Häyhä was often pitted against large groups of Soviet soldiers, and many times was alone doing his duty.
I agree that the Soviet snipers you named were equally brave and accurate, in particular, the female snipers were the ones I would prefer not to have faced with counter-sniper assignments.
Their accuracy was remarkable as was their resilience.
It might interest you to know that I was unknowingly trained to be a sniper by my Cherokee grandfather beginning at age 8. He had fought in World War II as your ally. Acting as a gunner's mate over the course of his duties he shot down 2 Japanese Kamikaze planes bent on killing his shipmates, and he could not bear the thought of that. So, while other men manning the guns had lost their nerve and sought shelter, my Grandfather stayed at his post pouring fire into the planes and ultimately destroyed them.
It also might also interest you that my Grandfather never told anyone about his heroism, especially not me.
One night while at the local VFW, a few friends distracted my Grandfather and pulled me outside to tell me about my Grandfather's service during the war.
If those friends, who were his shipmates, hadn't told me what had happened I would never have known.
That's a Cherokee trait, we are not prone to boasting. If what we've done is deemed important by our family, friends, or Tribe, we don't need to say anything, the people who are integral to our lives will already know.

It's kind of funny that all of us old country folks made good snipers, though I'm nowhere near the levels of the names that have been brought out.
Face it, not many city folks NEEDED subsistence hunting to survive, and by the time I was born it wasn't absolutely necessary, BUT, if you grew up eating venison, you'll appreciate tasting it again.
Here's one for you; I was in Colorado for some reason and heard about a restaurant that served bison marrow and I swear I had frybread there, but I wouldn't testify in court to that.
Regardless, bison or yunsu in my language, marrow is the only thing I would choose over butter. I'm a freak for GOOD butter. Mmmmm ... good!!
No kidding, if you're even a bit adventurous with your eating habits, first replace bison for beef, you'll live longer. And, if you ever have the opportunity to try bison marrow, DO IT!

If you haven't seen "Sisu" yet then you are incomplete as a human being. One of the best and purest movies made this side of the millennium, 100% entertainment from second one.
And if you haven't seen "Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale" by the same team then you should, it WILL become your favourite Christmas movie.
„Violen Night“ falls into the same category. A must see every Christmas season. You take the whole Die Hard series along, too, and you are set up for the holidays through New Year.
