His life was truly and testimony to his faith. I'm glad it was made into a movie so that it can be remembered and rediscovered. You never know how your own acts of faith will ripple into the future.
His faithfulness has been a testimony for many, just like some of our favourite bible characters when you think about Joseph and being sold as a slave. God is good and always has a plan.
What a warrior of God. For those who don’t know, Desmond Doss was a Seventh Day Adventist and was a big believer in observing the Saturday Sabbath. He would not labour or work on any Sabbath, no matter what. He would obey God’s Commands rather than man. In fact, the day Doss saved and rescued those 75 men from the ridge, was the Sabbath, May 5 1945. He would have been working harder than ever, but he stuck true to Gods word and pointed out Matthew 12:12. With all that being said, yes I believe the Sabbath is important. But what is most important, is that we have a strong faith for God and are hungry to learn more from his word. God Bless.
Helping the sick and needy and milking cows, cooking food, police on duty, firemen on duty, saving people's lives, or simply going to work every other weekend in order to allow other people the opportunity to have a weekend off are all activities that are not going to get you in trouble with your deity! And if they do perhaps that deity is just a representation of needless authoritarianism. I believe that even the Bible say that adminstering to the needy and removing your ox from "the mire" are acceptable to do any day of the week!
Wikipedia says that Desmond agreed to participate in the operation to retake the ridge on a Saturday and his commander agree to allow him to complete his Sabbath day prayers before the commencement of the military operation.
HE WAS A FAITHFUL SERVANT OF GOD AND KEPT THE SABBATH HOLY ACCORDING TO THE LAW OF GOD. THE SABBATH IS LOVE AND CARE YOU FELLOW MEN. EVEN ANIMALS ARE TO BE CARE FOR NOT ONLY ON SABBATH BUT EVERY DAY. LOVE THY NEIGHBOR IS THE LAW OF GOD. DO GOOD TO THOSE IN NEED,NOT ONLY ON SABBATH BUT EVEY DAY. DESMOND DOSS WAS FAITHFUL TO GOD'S LAW AND FAITHFUL TO HIS FAITH. AS WE ALL SHOULD RESPECT THE FAITH OF OTHERS NO MATTER THIER RELIGION. WE ARE NOT CALLED TO JUDGE ANY ONES RELIGION WE ARE CALLED TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER.GOD IS OUR ONE AND ONLY JUDGE.
Why would they wanna teach non violence? Scholls wanna teach kids that so they can have more recruits and bodies to toss out. They don't care for the kindness anymore
From what I heard His fellow soldiers and commanders said it was commanding officer said it was at least 100 men but Desmond in all his humility actually said just 50 so they compromised at 75
I heard Desmond speak at the Foster Memorial SDA Church in Asheville, NC when I was a teenager. I registered as a CO and when drafted toward the end of the Vietnam War .. I was sent to Ft. Sam, TX to begin my training as a medic .. later to become an Orthopedic Tech at Ft. Hood. Desmond no doubt saved many more lives than one would imagine .. because many other young men also became CO medics .. dedicated to saving lives .. and were treated better by the Army.
I'm a staunch Roman Catholic, but let me say this.... When I think of the words " Just one more Lord, just one more "...it never ceases to bring tears to my eyes. He was a seventh day Adventist...they can be proud of him. He was a true beautiful Christian man, he was a saint. And Saints are always quick to smile, and Desmond smiled. Enjoy heaven Mr Doss, the world has lost a precious soul. God bless you always!
Matthew, that's not what true Roman Catholicism teaches. Heretics cannot be saved. Also, there's no such thing as a "seventh day Adventist saint". You need learn about the Catholic Faith. This doesn't mean God didn't use Desmond, but rather Desmond should've converted to the Faith and used those special graces he received. Sadly, there's no indication that he was saved. Protestantism is heresy. It contradicts the Bible. Catholics are the only real and true Christians. See vaticancatholic.com for more.

My gosh, this man's life was straight out of the Old Testament. God used him in miraculous ways just like Gideon, Joseph, etc.. The Japanese soldier stating that his rifle kept jamming when he was trying to pull the trigger to kill Desmond is just one of the MANY proofs that God protected him throughout his service for our country. When I was young I was given the book "The Unlikeliest Hero", which was about Mr Doss' life and wartime experiences. Not many service personnel dare enter a combat zone without a weapon. Mr Doss sustained multiple combat injuries, the scars of which he carried the rest of his life. One of a handful of conscientious objectors to be awarded the CMH. I'm thankful the Hacksaw Ridge movie was made to honor his exploits. True hero and role model from the Greatest Generation.
One of THREE, not a handful, and the only one to still be alive when he received it. The other two were killed in Vietnam and received theirs posthumously.
This made me cry. Like I’m sitting here bawling because he’s so sweet. Not just sweet, but a pure soul. And the world had the privilege of knowing him. Usually God keeps them to himself.
What an Incredible human. They don't make men like Desmond Doss much anymore these days. What a Hero. What a Legend. What selflessness. These are the people i have always looked up to and valued their time whenever i would be lucky enough to spend any time with them. Wish i could have sat down with him and just talk. That conversation would have been priceless.

Desmond walked this earth plain as a true disciple of God. I am convinced that it is because of people like him that the Lord does not give up on us humans. Thank you, Mel Gibson, for bringing this man's story of greatness to us all.
The greatest war book I ever read was By Honor Bound. It was the first time that a Medal of Honor winner rescued another Medal of Honor winner. The courage of those two men was off the charts. As an example, the Navy Seal had to rescue a downed pilot. His Vietnamese teammates quit. So the SEAL prepared to go alone. At night. Behind enemy lines. And yes, the pilot was rescued. 5+ star book.
He saved so many people that they couldn't fit it in the movie. There was a Japanese machine gunner interviewed after the war and he stated that his gun would not fire when aimed at Doss.

What a beautiful, God fearing human being. Desmond Doss is the standard for how humanity should be. I wish I had the honor and privilege of meeting. He alone will help me grow closer to God. RIP and God bless Desmond Doss.
I first learned of Desmond Doss in 1969. I attended a Seventh Day Adventist school that one year. In the library at the back of the classroom was a book titled "The Unlikeliest Hero". It was the story of Mr. Doss and his experiences during the war. I was indeed moved by his faith and convictions. The religion he followed was the Adventists and they are a very strict Christian order. Saturday is the sabbath and the diet is strict. No pork, shellfish, caffeine, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, etc. I can see how the desire not to kill another man was so deeply embedded in his beliefs. God definitely had a hand in shielding him that day. A true hero the likes of which we may never see again.
It is a beautiful and inspiring story indeed. I am not an American but a Christian. But this story speaks to everyone. I'm glad his faith and God gave him such a loving and brave heart.

I confess I am a screaming Agnostic. Christened Catholic, never Confirmed. I have no time for religion, no place for it. I watched the Gibson movie (which was panned terribly by critics) , thought it was a good "war movie" but was I fascinated by Doss. A guy like him usually lasts the first bullet in a firefight. Next to useless, professes a "spiritual Medic" role, helping as a Medic might without the application of first aid. I will tell you that I spent months educating myself about Doss, his denomination in the Christian Church and his undisputed real life achievements on the battlefield by eye witness accounts and military records. Again I am not a religious man, but I am not an ignorant. I believe Doss was a vessel , a conduit granted to the rarest few to whatever power he prayed. It's practically unfathomable that a man of flesh and blood could survive for so long, with scant concern for his own safety in an environment of unbelievable combat mortality. True he was severely injured but he had accomplished what he had set out to do... it's beyond remarkable.
You, the agnostic jspee, seem to get the picture far better than the monkeys bickering over their petty beliefs. My God is in the forest, mountains, seashore and I try to communicate with him/her as often as I can. Better than in a building, listening to some overblown welfare recipient who probably knows less about creation than the monkeys who hang on to his/her every utterance.
As a Vietnam first cavalry medic I was extremely moved by the dedication, tenacity and bravery of this hero.I will take his memories along with mine to my grave.

This quote from the movie has to be the best line in the movie. Captain Glover: "All I saw was a skinny kid. I didn't know who you were. I only found out of Mr. Doss a few days ago. I watched the videos about him because his story is the same as another man I knew of growing up. He was another conscientious objector who worked as a medic and was awarded the bronze star in 1944. Their stories were remarkably similar and this makes me wonder how many more men like them there were.
I got to meet Desmond Doss ,back in the 70's. He came into the hospital for a black widow bite ,and my mum ,who was a doctor ,tended to him. Think I was about nine or ten years old ,and had read his book. Wildwood Georgia.

God Bless.
I'd love to believe in this stuff but, really???? but a nice message to our future Christian troops ......! well done God people 👍👍
Helping the sick and needy and milking cows, cooking food, police on duty, firemen on duty, saving people's lives, or simply going to work every other weekend in order to allow other people the opportunity to have a weekend off are all activities that are not going to get you in trouble with your deity!

@Christopher Bogie Area Of Responsibility. What is it you think I said that has you so wrapped around the axle?
Amazingly, the great "I Am" the Mighty one above, who dulled the firing pins, and bent rifle barrels as for Doss not to be struck down. What an amazing God!
What a fantastic presentation.
It treats Desmond’s reverence for the Word of God, and his faith in Jesus quite honorably.
As an aspiring nurse, not on the battlefield, I look up to Desmond Doss and I always now look to him. I know for sure when I take care of my first batch of patients I’ll always chant, “Just one more,” as they either are discharged or sadly pass away. Desmond Doss will always be my hero.
AMEN Stephen! You are one of our modern heroes. Life is easier for us because of your undivided service for the wellbeing of everyone.
@@TheIncredibleJourney this means a lot to me. Thank you guys so much :) peace be with you
I only found out of Mr. Doss a few days ago. I watched the videos about him because his story is the same as another man I knew of growing up. He was another conscientious objector who worked as a medic and was awarded the bronze star in 1944. Their stories were remarkably similar and this makes me wonder how many more men like them there were.
25,000 conscientious objectors served in WW2.
what a beautiful man. it’s hard to even explain the respect i have for him.
I got to meet Desmond Doss ,back in the 70's. He came into the hospital for a black widow bite ,and my mum ,who was a doctor ,tended to him. Think I was about nine or ten years old ,and had read his book. Wildwood Georgia.
A man of true conviction. I could only hope I could be that committed to my principles.
