I was a Navy Corpsman. We heard about Doss in our classes. One of the Navy Corpsman that trained me got to meet Doss before his death (He met Doss in 97) said Doss would take down the name of any medics (Army, Navy, Air Force or Coast Guard) he met and would pray for them daily. From my understanding at his death it was 2 notebooks worth of names he would pray for personally but he would also pray for any Medics in harms way after 9/11
I’ll tell you who Private Doss is. One of the bravest soldiers who saved 75 men without a single weapon to protect himself and was awarded the Medal of Honor
0:25 That bible he puts away was given to him by his wife. In real life he did really lose it in combat but didn't realize until he'd been evacuated, so he asked that word be sent to his unit asking if they could go look for it. By then the ridge has been secured so his entire company scoured the area for hours and managed to find it and ship it back to him.
To be honest, if I was shipped away to hells fire 🔥 the mouth of the beast. I would want to have my bible that my beloved wife gave me. The power of the holy bible United with a love gesture of my wife would mean everything..
Its crazy to think this film actually underplayed the courage of Private Doss. But they did. And I heard people disbelieve that Doss did even what he did in the film. Yes, he did all that. And he did a whole bunch more. The man was made of some kind of courageous iron the rest of us shall never know.
It's crazy to think, but he actually survived at least two prior campaigns and was noted for bravery in those incidents, as well. One of the craziest things is evidently a sniper tried to kill him and later, he reported his gun mysteriously jammed a number of times when he tried to kill a man that was later determined to be Desmond.
This man was thought to be a coward for not touching a gun and in the end he ended up saving over 75 men without touching a weapon in my book that makes him a legend
@@blackangus4798 I think he and the captain debated on how many he saved, 135 or something was the high end. He had worked for so long can be hard to keep track of how many he saved he thought it was a bit lower (I forget the low number) but still a crazily high number for one man and they agreed to meet in the middle of their two estimates and used 75 for the official report and his recommendation for the Medal of Honor. He might have saved more might have saved just a hair less but it is still a miracle none the less. God bless this man we could use more like him now more than ever.
Through action,a man becomes a hero. Through death,a hero becomes a legend. Through time,a legend becomes a Myth. And by learning from the Myth,a man takes action.
He apparently, after the grenade part, helped a few more people and let them take the stretcher back, he also was shot by a sniper and crawled 300 yards to help some more wounded but the directors left it out because they thought it would be too unbelievable
He even tried to get down his stretcher so that another could get on. This was left out due to it being too unbelievable. Live your life so that when people make a movie about you, they leave out facts because they are too unbelievable.
@@fidelski2019 Good thing it's actually written down as fact and history, lot of "unbelievable" things have been written like; 1 man killing 1,000 soldiers with a jawbone.
This film did a great depiction of Desmond Doss's story and make his testimony to be known. I actually started diving a little deeper and watched the documentary of the real Desmond Doss. I was so surprised to find out there was even MORE insane things that Desmond Doss went through. This scene where it depicts Desmond praying, in the documentary, it was recorded historically that after Desmond prayed for his men (as it is shown in this scene), NONE of the men died in that very battle, but even destroyed the "pill box" and gain victory in that battle. Later, they called off the prayer and went ahead and in this battle is where Desmond was shot in the arm and got hurt in the legs. He waited 5 hours before he was rescued. When the men came and brought the stretcher and carried him out, Desmond spotted another injured fellowmen who was hit with severe head damage, and was recorded that Desmond, despite being injured himself, told the men to give his stretcher to the other man who has a severe head damage. The men carrying him were surprise but did as they were told and put that man on the stretcher. While Desmond waited for the men to come back to get him, he took a piece of wood and dragged himself across the ground (and this is where he probably lost his bible, but didn't realize it) and by the time the men came back and got him. He was sent to the medic hospital but ended up being devastated in finding out he lost his bible that kept him through the battle. He wrote his section, and request if anyone sees his bible, if they could retrieve it. (Almost like in this scene) But in reality, what was so touching was that as soon as his fellow men heard how devastated Desmond was in losing his bible, the fellow men soldiers all went together RISKING THEIR LIVES in the battle field with all diligence to find his bible. They eventually ended up finding it. When Desmond found out, he was so touched. It just goes to show, how self-less act of love can multiple in multitude. I thought to share because this film is so EPIC ALLY AWESOME (one of my favorite ones now) , but when I found out the real life story, I'm blown away.
The film not only depicted Desmond Doss perfectly but also beautifully portrayed both the Americans and Japanese with respect and showing what war does to people. One of the best war films ever made.
One of the few movies which depicts this very thing rather than spewing bs propoganda. Saving Private Ryan does this very well as well. Just ordinary people, scarred by a life they had no say in
@@kyna6683 I hate to break it to you, but this movie is propaganda. In short, it's valiant and morally convicted US soldier vs brave but cunning, unmotivated, led by amoral fanatics Japanese soldiers. This is just another iteration of good vs evil dichotomy in propaganda. By the way, IRL they were defending their homeland, they fought tooth and nails, and after defeat in Okinawa even civilians committed mass sudoku. (sorry, utube doesn't like certain words.) Don't get it wrong, it's really good movie, but it's still propaganda, the fact you think it isn't only shows how effective propaganda is.
The best war movie period! Even better than Saving Private Ryan because Hacksaw Ridge really happened and Private Desmond Doss was a real person unlike the fictional Private James Ryan!
@@benadam7753 its not that good. Very cheesy and unrealistic in many parts however its good that they based this off a true hero. For more realistic war scenes, band of brothers and pacific rim is amazing
Colonel Stelzer: What the hell is the DELAY Captain you were s’pposed to begin THAT assault 10 minutes ago. Glover: We’re waiting, Sir. Stelzer: WAITING FOR WHAT? Glover: ..... for Private Doss to finish praying for us, sir. Stelzer: Private Doss is praying for you? Who the hell is Private Doss?
In reality, after being injured by the grenade, Doss tended to himself and then remained another 5 hours helping others, after that he was finally put in a stretcher. While they were carrying him, he noticed a critically injured soldier. Doss requested to be put down and for them to carry the soldier instead. Eventually he and another soldier were helping each other escape from the battle when a sniper fired at them, fracturing Doss's arm. He instructed the other guy to make a splint with the stock of a rifle and then escaped. In the movie, they simplified this because they thought audiences wouldn't believe. Doss is the definition of bravery. like any sane person he wouldve been afraid of a vicious battle like that, but he presevered because he was more afraid that another human being could be suffering while he could help.
There are also time restraints for theatrical films. If the film is too long and not expected to gross high, theaters make more money with more showings which means shorter-length films. High gross movies (Titanic) remain at theaters longer and can afford to be long in length!
That's so true!! Very very true!!! That was just sooo smashing and remarkable what he did!!! My favorite scenes in this movie are when he is rescuing all these men!!
He is a true hero, just like everyone of those soldiers who fought alongside him. Yes, they treated him poorly, but those men fought the battle he couldn't. All these men should be remembered in the same light that people would see Doss in. All our soldiers deserve that treatment. Doss should be seen as an inspiration and hero to any who wish to serve
I really love that scene in the end. He was getting lowered down with him sighing relief, but they pan the camera downwards making it look like he's going up to heaven. And you know damn well he's up there.
On my day of judgment I can only hope to shake his hand. I’m not a soldier, and never served but this man helped me in my faith. Just hope it’s enough to get me there.
Hahahaha look at all these slaves killing each other for the glory of their masters, what a scene to behold! To think that humans are stupid enough to get manipulated into war where they end up killing other humans because some other human told them to do it and they thought it was okey ;D
Countless. War ruins lives, not just those who die but those who live too, him saving those 74/75 not only saved them but their families, their friends, everyone who knew and loved them. This man truly is a hero.
Antonio Garcia they don’t know the exact number of soldiers he saved the soldiers there reported he saved more then a 100 Desmond being humble said it was more like 50 so people finally agreed on 75 as the estimated amount of soldiers he saved. Also one of the main reasons people don’t know how many he saved is because their wasn’t someone down at the bottom of the ridge counting them they were more worried about getting the wounded help.

If this wasn't a real life story, no one would believe it! How many people are alive today because of this one man saving 74 of his fellow soldiers? Rest In Peace Desmond.
The end scene isn't real, the true account is even more incredible and the filmmakers felt the audience wouldn't believe it so they played it down. Makes a change they have to tone down a true event instead if big it up.
This comment makes 0 sense 😂😂😂 “If it wasn’t a real life story,no one would believe it” Of course they wouldn’t if it’s not a real life story why would They believe it’s real life story?
The movie left out one of the most amazing parts. After kicking that grenade, he continued to try and save more men, eventually being shot in the arm by a sniper and having it broken. He splinted his arm, then CRAWLED 300 yards before finally being saved.
Nothing indicates he ever did such a thing. He was hit by a mortar, not a grenade that he supposedly kicked, which makes sense because as a medic with no weapon it would make no sense to be in the front charge, but coming directly up the rear where he could see who got hit.
@@Moom20 I have. and in general it's indcated it was a mortar. What's interesting though is I watched 3 different documentaries, and not one agreed on how he got the initial leg wound, the only thing they agreed on was the sniper wound and him giving up the stretcher.
It’s when you find out that in real life, this man did some things so incredible that they had to be left out of the movie because directors thought people wouldn’t believe it.
Its a testament to Pvt Doss when they have to tone down his actions for a film about his life rather than inflate them by 10 to make him sound more impressive. Its also a further testament to him that he didn't consider himself a hero rather a man doing his job and saving lives.
@@吉弘久米 What, asking for his bible? Possibly, though it wasn't necessarily Desmond asking for it. That soldier willingly searched for the Bible (and in reality it wasn't just one). At this point they were all willing to sacrifice themselves for him because of what he did.
While it's nice that the ONE guy went back for it, the truth was Desmond didn't realize it was lost till he was long gone from the ridge. He sent word he lost it and the ENTIRE COMPANY searched the (now fully occupied) ridge for it. They eventually found it and sent it to him.
This movie was brutal. When you have a guy literally using a dead soldier who's legs were blown off as a shield you get an idea what people went through.
Deshaun Allison well we’d need to take into account the caliber the enemy is using. The enemy uses bolt action and semi automatic rifles such as the type 33. All the Japanese guns were chambered In 6.5×50mm Arisaka. This is enough to penetrate a human, but it is not a full power Cartridge. If it was to penetrate the torso, it would come out fragmented and soften the blow to a few minor cuts.
This scene probably captures just how much of a morale boost Doss was that night when he saved so many lives. A lot of people probably thought that going up onto that ridge again meant the death of them but if a guy without even a firearm saved almost 100 people, you gotta live up to their expectations if they are willing to go above and beyond.
@@oykel4089 It depends on a stupid team who can't keep themselves alive, but let's not continue with this, let us just thank the brave men that fought and died for a better future the which is our present and yet we take it all for granted.
I go to cinema a lot, but this movie was the most intense experience I've ever got watching a film. When my father and I were leaving the theater, we didn't said a word, we were speechless about what we just saw. Even now I don't know what to say. A masterpiece and one of the best war movies ever made
Blue Baron “based” mostly on the fact that the movie didn’t fully depict everything that Pvt Doss did. Just knowing that Doss did even more than what the movie depicted shows just how much of a badass he was, and why he deserved to receive the highest military medal an American can receive.
As a lot of people have already said, he wasn’t out right on a stretcher, he refused aid, treated his own wounds, and stayed on that ridge for another 5 hours doing what he does best. He then evaced off the ridge carrying a wounded soldier, where he was shot by a Japanese sniper. Doss instructed the wounded soldier how to construct a splint with the stock of a rifle, and then and only then allowed himself to be lowered off the ridge by other medics. His amount of men saved alone is staggering, but what I think people often overlook is the massive morale boost he gave every man on Hacksaw Ridge.
@@ni.rojroca4656great point. Smitty was exactly the kinda man you need on a battlefield, tough, quick and used to violence. He'd have been a good soldier in any era.
In the real battle that his unit refused to go into action before he was finished prayer, they did not suffer a single casualty. The objective was taken and a series of pillboxes were even taken without any casualties. That is mythological level of morale and protection. Meanwhile, the time they interrupted his prayer they took severe casualties including Doss himself. He was sent home after that so there was no 3rd attempt to see if he would be able to repeat such a feat.
Without a doubt, my favorite war movie ever. Andrew Garfield did such an incredible job on the acting and the whole movie was incredibly well made. Absolutely fantastic.
Actually it was after they had gained control over hacksaw ridge that the officer in charge of his order that they search for the bible. The director didn't include it cuz he thought people wouldn't believe it.
I have no expertise or authority on the subject, but I can honestly say this was one of the best shot, best edited, and well-directed movies I've ever seen.
Why do i get the feeling that when Pvt. Doss died, God greeted him in heaven and said, "Good job my son. Welcome home." And hugged him tight. RIP Desmond. May the world be filled with the likes of you.

The amount of respect Doss gained and how much he has for them is awe inspiring. They initially all practically hated him and thought of him as a lazy coward who had it easy with some of his fellow soldiers literally threatening to kill him, only to be proven extremely wrong with him showing such determination in saving lives rather than taking them. They refused to go back to Hacksaw Ridge without him because they knew he was an integral part of their squad despite knowing that Saturdays were usually his day of rest and that they would be asking a lot from him for going against what he believed in with his convictions. This movie showed how seriously devoted Desmond was to his religion even refusing to go against his beliefs when it could've gotten him unfairly incarcerated, but he still chose to go back up to Hacksaw because those men had become his brothers in arms and did something he usually never did, he broke his normal routine and worked on his Sabbath and the fact that his entire company waited for him shows how much they appreciated his sacrifice for them.
Something the movie didn't show. At Hacksaw when they waited for him to finish his prayers (it actually put them farther behind than just 10 minutes) the Americans didn't have a single casualty while capturing the hill which is damn impressive when you realize they even took pillbox locations. He was wounded in the follow up battle, not on Hacksaw.
What an incredible tribute to an incredible man. Doss. Just watched a documentary on the Battle of Okinawa. Super costly island. On top of all of the U.S. Casualties. As well as Okinawans and Japenese Soldiers that perished. A U.S. Army Brig General was killed there as well as the beloved Army Correspondent Ernie Pyle who was adored by the foot soldiers. When I rewatch this scene I feel a level of badass coming from Desmond Doss when he put his Bible in his pocket. Like, " mfs I'm coming straight at you with a Bible. And I will save as much as my fellow comrades as I can. I dare you to try and stop me".
And considering the Japanese tried many methods to kill him (including a sniper who claimed whenever he tried to aim at him, his rifle would jam) but failed...someone was definitely watching over him.

*What happened was actually a lot crazier/heroic.* From Wikipedia: _Other changes to the story occur near the end of the movie, when Doss is placed on a stretcher. In real life, Doss had another wounded man take his place on the stretcher. After treating the soldier, a sniper shot fractured Doss's arm, and he crawled 300 yards (270 m) to safety after being left alone for five hours. Gibson omitted that from the film because he felt that the audience would not find the scene believable._
Another touching moment was he actually did lose him bible but he didn't realize till he was long gone from the ridge. He sent word and the entire company searched the ridge (now totally occupied and safe) till they found the bible and mailed it to him
This is true most of the things he did they dumbed down because they didn’t believe the audience would believe most of what he did. It was truly the most heroic thing by any one man in the history of the military.

Private Desmond Doss. Like his father, he served with honor and distinction. In the field he saved 74 men at great cost and risk to himself. In 2006, at the age of 87....the military lost one of it's finest.
something i like about this last battle is the scenes showing the japanese leaders committing seppuku. it shows that, while being enemies from the protaganists perspective (and during the actual war), the japanese were still people. people with customs and values, just like everyone else in the war. something not a lot of war movies do.
I've realized what makes this movie different. It's poetry. The shots of combat, the perspective of the gun firing, the way the dead fall, the music, oh the music. It's poetry given form. The imagery of Doss being lowered on the stretcher alone is tragically beautiful. Or the scene before this when his squad lay hands on him after he comes down with the wounded. It's not the gritty realism of Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers or the over dramatized depictions of Fury. This isn't just a war movie. It's damn poetry.
One of the most amazing stories I've ever heard and Mel Gibson turned it into an incredible movie. The scorn the soldiers had for Private Doss turned into awe, admiration and complete respect...how else would or could they respond.
I think what I love best about this scene is how they showed that the entire platoon (I think that’s the right term?) didn’t rush Pvt. Doss while he was praying. They didn’t say or do anything to make him hurry. They stood there waiting patiently for him for finish praying for 10 minutes without saying a word. That was amazing respect they showed for him. They would not go up without him and they even waited for him before they went up. Such an amazing movie that was extremely well done

@@sentinel-wraith9060 The gun knew when to respect someone with a titanic set of balls, and let him pass in respect, it seemed, I would guess.

@Rosendo Espinosa Lots of ppl have faith and still run for the hills. He was a born hero.

That's a real shame, they should have used it in the film, and left a caption at the end, saying everything portrayed was factually accurate

Good thing it's actually written down as fact and history, lot of "unbelievable" things have been written like; 1 man killing 1,000 soldiers with a jawbone.

Just ordinary people, scarred by a life they had no say in
@@kyna6683 I hate to break it to you, but this movie is propaganda. andrea lugo good job watching the video.
demfazons Channel goddam Sam Worthington (Captain Glover) is so cool
I mean respect for saving all those guys and all, but honestly thats not a good reason to delay an attack. They have a schedule for a reason
U know ur life was a madness when parts couldn’t be put in a film cause it wouldn’t be believable

There are also time restraints for theatrical films. If the film is too long and not expected to gross high, theaters make more money with more showings which means shorter-length films. High gross movies (Titanic) remain at theaters longer and can afford to be long in length!

The movie left out one of the most amazing parts. After kicking that grenade, he continued to try and save more men, eventually being shot in the arm by a sniper and having it broken. He splinted his arm, then CRAWLED 300 yards before finally being saved.
Just the fact kicked away 2 grenades probably saved 20 more lives.
Nothing indicates he ever did such a thing. He was hit by a mortar, not a grenade that he supposedly kicked, which makes sense because as a medic with no weapon it would make no sense to be in the front charge, but coming directly up the rear where he could see who got hit.

Even Christ himself healed on the Sabbath. I think Doss realized that doing good on the Sabvath by treating his comrades was no sun.

I started crying when the real Desmond Doss made an appearance at the end. He is a real hero America deserved and,as sad as it is,he is now finally up in Heaven with his wife, family, and possibly some of the friends he fought with and saved during the war.
Nope he is not in Heaven yet. He was a seventh day Adventist as am I. We believe we go to heaven at the second coming. Death is a sleep. The Bible even says the dead know nothing. They are resting until christ wakes them all at his return!!! Can't wait!!
@@resolutepropertyservice9909 i didn’t know that.
They did all this on a tight schedule and a pretty tight budget for an A-grade war movie
Mel Gibson, baby!!!!!
Good movie 11/10
Sadly, forgot the budget on reload animations.
Japanese soldier: dying
Desmond: so you've chosen life
Agree
While his brothers were taking lives, he was saving lives
They don’t really tell us in the movie, but in the final assault, the one where Pvt. Doss prayed for everyone, not a single U.S. soldier in his company was even hurt, except for one soldier with a rock scratch from climbing up the ridge.
Edit: Not a single US soldier in Company B (Doss’s Company).
Simple Cats So japan could’ve won ww2 if they prayed for their men before their battles 😑
That's insane
I need/want to see the source for this 😀
@@sakarieklund4305 yeah kinda hard to believe that many people and not one casualty
I think its to show Doss gave them strength. In the first battle alot of soldiers were terrified.
Kimer Lorens - Thanks so much for the 8 segments of "Hacksaw Ridge". I cannot believe my good fortune in coming across your generous "share" tonight. If ever I needed strong encouragement, it was tonight. You see since 1/2022 i have been "hospital bed & wheelchair bound". This movie gave me the courage to "plow forward" and not give up my quest to walk again. I admit I do go through periods of discouragement & like tonight, I do need periodic boosts of Hope to keep me going. Your shares did just the trick! Many thanks! Best wishes to all out there from South New Jersey, USA ❤️❤️❤️
When I rewatch this scene I feel a level of badass coming from Desmond Doss when he put his Bible in his pocket. Like, " mfs I'm coming straight at you with a Bible. And I will save as much as my fellow comrades as I can. I dare you to try and stop me".
Well sai well said
And considering the Japanese tried many methods to kill him (including a sniper who claimed whenever he tried to aim at him, his rifle would jam) but failed...someone was definitely watching over him.
Another cussword a true devoted Christian doesn't like to hear....yet I feel like cuz he worked on his Sabbath. He was injured..I'd be cocky naturally after something like that 2!
@@christopherwhite542 Actually he wasn't really working, you are allowed to do good on the Sabbath

And the fact that the nature of war was killing but this movie was about saving lives.
@@cardalmond994 no because i rate Where Eagles Dare as one of the best too.
*What happened was actually a lot crazier/heroic.*
From Wikipedia:
_Other changes to the story occur near the end of the movie, when Doss is placed on a stretcher.
So I’m guessing they changed that to the movie’s sniper scene which is followed by the intense action dragging scene before this final sequence
Another touching moment was he actually did lose him bible but he didn't realize till he was long gone from the ridge. He sent word and the entire company searched the ridge (now totally occupied and safe) till they found the bible and mailed it to him
@@BerserkCD 🥲
@@DEEZ_N4Tno that’s just something else that also happened I’m pretty sure
This is true most of the things he did they dumbed down because they didn’t believe the audience would believe most of what he did. It was truly the most heroic thing by any one man in the history of the military.
My father fought on Okinawa - He was in the 96th Deadeye Dispatch Division. He was wounded twice. He saw most of his squadron killed. My Dad is alive and is 96 years old. He fought in the Philippines too.
God bless your father
Big thanks to your Dad. We are living now because of him.
Respect for your father 🫡
"Let's go to work."
Absolutely the most badass quote in a war movie just before shit goes down .
"God created life, it's not mine to take."
5:47 The perfect definition of “Thou shall not kill” & “Love your enemies and do good.”
" He who made kittens put snakes in the grass" .... Ian Anderson
@@arcticangel1628 Actually the original text says, "thou shall not murder", it doesn't say that you can't kill. If you can't kill then all animals are off limits, all meat, all animal produce.. Also if the no killing was a rule then that makes all Jews who did the will of God in Canaan sinners, WHICH MAKES NO SENSE WHAT SO EVER. Half of the stories in the bible don't make any sense at all if it would say "thou shall not kill" instead of "thou shall not murder". God would not make life that difficult to live for us, it makes no sense either that he would confuse us. Especially since the original text says "THOU SHALL NOT MURDER". Murder and killing is very different. So please, stop spreading misinformation.

Holy shit. You didnt have the write a whole damn essay to correct one small error
Private Desmond Doss. Like his father, he served with honor and distinction. In the field he saved 74 men at great cost and risk to himself. In 2006, at the age of 87....the military lost one of it's finest.
Heaven took him home
something i like about this last battle is the scenes showing the japanese leaders committing seppuku. it shows that, while being enemies from the protaganists perspective (and during the actual war), the japanese were still people. people with customs and values, just like everyone else in the war. something not a lot of war movies do.
"While everybody's out there taking life, I'm gonna be saving it"
The courage, will, and faith of this man is outstanding.
5:47 The perfect definition of “Thou shall not kill” & “Love your enemies and do good.”
HackSaw Ridge and Unbroken are just one of the best war movies i have seen in my life because it brings the past back of how the real one take place.
This is a 1000 times better than Unbroken even though Unbroken was well intentioned.
1:31 that shot is incredible.
What about this? 5:43
One of the most amazing stories I've ever heard and Mel Gibson turned it into an incredible movie. The scorn the soldiers had for Private Doss turned into awe, admiration and complete respect...how else would or could they respond.
That's why this is one of my favorite war stories and movies
1:37 So 3 Japanese soldiers walk into a BAR....
Goddamnit
I laughed way too hard at this!
More like the BAR walked through them
Mikey that was funny as fuck
I don't get it 😭
I think what I love best about this scene is how they showed that the entire platoon (I think that’s the right term?) didn’t rush Pvt.
Forget the Avengers, Godzilla, Jurrasic Park or Any Other Film. 2:55 is the Most EPIC and Awe Inspiring thing I've ever seen in my entire life.
Edit: Just the way he kicks the grenade and it blows up, throwing him back is just WOW
Lol ok
ragemonkey117 Wow, you actually think some fake superhero stories are better than a real man who didnt have “powers” saved a lot of men with his own strength and sacrifice
They went overboard with it, truth is doss just put his foot onto the grenade
What really happend was less exiting but courageous nevertheless
@@lilirodriguez8851 But he never said that, lol just said, apart from Godzilla, what does it have to do with it?

Fuad Hanif seriously
His soul, probably still looking for a wounded soldier

Fuad Hanif dead.
Fuad Hanif now this comment made me think to let me die on the field...instead of getting saved.
A true man of God and a selfless hero that deserved so much more but asked only if his other soldiers were safe !
Upon Desmond's return to the United States and being awarded the Medal of Valour, he was unfortunately in and out of hospital for 5 years, and developed tuberculosis. This resulted in the removal on one lung and 5 ribs. He was then medically discharged from the US Army on a 90% pension, and purchased a small house on a big 5 acre block which became a successful berry farm. I watched this on the 'This is Your Life' episode of Desmond Doss. What an incredible man!

The kind of love and respect you have to have for someone to go back into the thick of battle to retrieve their bible. So many people will never be able to understand that. Such an amazing hero.

I heard from a very reliable source that while they were transporting him to be evacuated after that grenade incident, one of the stretcher bearer got shot so Pvt Doss got up , patched the man up after giving mouth-to-mouth res and morphine, he placed the wounded man on the stretcher and helped carried him to safety.
