    Hornady 000bk is 35 cal ..says it on the box...and it comes in a 5lb box for 36.00...swaged hard lead...great stuff

      Yeah I know, local store keeps hornady buckshot in stock. I haven’t bought any because I plan on getting a .35 cal mold soon. The Lee 000 buckshot mold is .360 cal.

    I'm excited to see more experiments in the 835. My only issue with mine is that I have to choose the perfect powder for lighter loads(under 1.50 oz) or else I don't get a good burn, and wind up dumping unburned powder out of my barrel. The lower pressures of the larger bore are a blessing and a curse, and it doesn't help that my barrel is ported... and so are my chokes...

    • @theshotgunscientists
      @theshotgunscientists  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try using regular target wads for lighter loads, like the cb1138, they expand to the bore way better than a tps or lbc wad.

    Compression formed have the line around the AA new hs doesnt have the square around the letters AA

    • @theshotgunscientists
      @theshotgunscientists  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The first run HS hulls do have the square around the AA, I have several hundred of the original production HS from like 2004. They look just like the compression formed hulls but shinier, and they have the separate basewad.

  • @jonleone777
    @jonleone777 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I may need to try this load. I have some hornady OOO on hand to see how it does. I havent had much luck so far finding s load that will do what i want. Ive tried blue dot, red dot and longshot, all with the cb1138 wad with and without filler and OO buck and AA gray hull. Im patterning at 15 yards and my goal is roughly a 6 inch cluster which i have not been able to obtain thus far. Dont get me wrong, all the loads ive made have kept the pellets in the torso and would work. Perhaps these combinations and my rem 1100 with 22 inch slug barrel do not like.

    • @theshotgunscientists
      @theshotgunscientists  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Slug barrel? As in rifled? If it’s a smoothbore with a cylinder bore choke the only way you’re gonna get really tight patterns is by switching to .31 cal or smaller and using steel shot wads. Those pattern like federal flitecontrol buckshot. Loading shells like this and using a cylinder bore choke is only good for about 20 yards before the pattern starts to get really wide. If it’s a rifled barrel, buckshot will never pattern good.

    • @jonleone777
      @jonleone777 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@theshotgunscientists its a smoothbore open cylinder as far as i know. No markings on the barrel stating otherwise. Time for more experimenting i guess.

    I was hoping you could help me out a little bit. I plan to reload steel shot for waterfowl hunting. My dad has the machine and some shot but he doesn’t have any wads or powder. His machine is set up with bottles on the top and is set up for an ounce and 5/8 powder charge. What would be the best wads for that? It would be 3 inch shells of whatever brand shells I find, rio, Winchester, fiocchi, Kent, and any other brands I find. And what is the closest powder to Winchester 571. It’s what he used to use.

    • @theshotgunscientists
      @theshotgunscientists  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      1 5/8 ounce of steel will barely fit in 3.5” 12 gauge man. It’s typically what’s loaded in 10 gauge. You’ll have to drop down to 1 1/4 to 1 3/8 ounces at the most. Blue dot or Alliant steel are the powders you need. As for 571, hodgdon hs7 replaced it years ago. Same powder, but hs7 was recently discontinued as well and as of right now no replacement exists.

    Thinking about getting Bam 00+ guess it a little bit smaller than 000 and little bigger than 00. Wonder will it fit 9 pellets in 2 3/4 shell with CB 1138 without dimping the hulls. Thanks

    • @theshotgunscientists
      @theshotgunscientists  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You’d have to load 8 or 10 pellets stacked by 2’s, 9 pellets bulges the hull out stacked by 3’s without the shot cup. Not much but a little. 35 cal 000 will stack by 2’s but true 36 cal 000 won’t.

    Tyler - If you read this - What do you base the decision upon, to use 29 gr Longshot in the 1.5 oz load vs 28 gr LS for the 8 pellet load ?
    Is it just the way they pattern ?
    Also - Ever tried Mica Wad Slick ?

    • @theshotgunscientists

      Never tried mica wad slick but it does work for it’s intended purpose. I’ve seen other people use it. As for powder charge, that was a matter of straight wall vs tapered wall shell.
