City of Fort Worth paying homeless to clean up streets

  • Fort Worth is helping people get back on their feet while cleaning up the city.
    City officials are hiring homeless people to pick up litter, giving them a chance to start over.
    Project Clean Slate has seven employees. Fort Worth approved another $465,000 to hire 15 more homeless people.
    Picking up litter may seem like a small thing to some people, but the job has given Frank Crist his life back.
    “I'd still be in the shelter living on the street,” he said.
    Clean Slate is run by the Presbyterian Night Shelter through a contract with the city of Fort Worth. Crist is one of seven employees. More employees are expected to be hired in the near future.
    "The goal is to give people an income so they can end their homelessness,” said Toby Owen, CEO of the Presbyterian Night Shelter.
    The program worked for Crist. He now has his own place, a job that pays better than minimum wage and provides health insurance. Crist was homeless for two years. He says he tried many times to get a job.
    “That's the first question: Where do you live?” he said. “Soon as you say that you live in a shelter, they don't want much to do with you."
    Then, there’s the deal breaker.
    "As soon as they found out I'd been in prison, it pretty much was over,” Crist said.
    What's made this program so successful is that it's helped some find the pride and confidence they thought they'd lost.
    "When we clean a creek or a park in our city, you look back and see with work we've done that it feels good. It looks good,” said Reginald Newton, another Clean Slate employee.
    Picking up litter is a service the city has to pay for. Supporters of Clean Slate says what better way to use that money than to also have an impact on people's lives.
    There is also advancement opportunity. City staff says if the workers do well with the job, they automatically get to interview for a higher paying job within the city.

    Brilliant idea!! The mayor in Albuqurque, NM also employed similar program with success! Great idea for our now homeless and litter ridden Colorado!

    Ft Worth is the example of a great republican city. Why is Dallas just tearing down homeless camps and doing nothing to help them. Last time during the winter they moved out the homeless and two froze to death that same week. And believe me we have a ton of trash that no one is picking up here. We don't need new stupid parks we need to pay our police and fire personal what they deserve which is a hell of alot more than they get paid now and stop stealing the pentions and hire more officer's at competitive pay to the rest of the DFW area and not spend it on stupid parks. And at the same time help the homeless like Ft Worth is and pay them to do city jobs like litter pickup and other jobs so they can get on there feet and also have more shelters for them. Ok I'm done bitching about Dallas now. Thank you Ft Worth for being a great example for other cities to be like.

      S B lol that is it exactly. I am have been watching Dallas tare down affordable housing to put up all the upscale apartments everywhere, just as Los Angeles and San Francisco did and made it where lower income and middle income people have no place to live except the streets and Dallas is very very quickly taking that same road. Only difference is both those cities in California pay there police and fire department personal a good competitive pay with other departments. Dallas pays there police and fire worse than all cities in the metroplex so we have no police and fire personal here and a huge quick growing homeless population. Hmmm watch how this is going to work out for our completely corrupt city council and our criminal city manager. I have been in Dallas for 54 years and watching it being built up looks pretty at night but it's a power keg ready to start falling down. Dalifornia is the best name thank you for that :-):-):-) ok I'm done bitching for now lol have a very very good evening :-):-):-)

      @Alana Weaver in Richardson adv around 300.000 and up depends on the suburb. Dallas has some tax lien properties not many tho mainly south. I know one that will be in the whiterock area, next door to my grandmother's house next to an elementary school. The lady that owns it, her and her daughter passed in California and we can't find any family to keep up the taxes on it. So probably won't be long till it comes up. Real nice 3 br.

    Illegals and low-paid migrants get the jobs the homeless could do. That's why they're homeless. Or is it that the homeless are lazy? It has to be one of the other.

    • @ericjaramillo1381

      S B the reason illegals and low-paid immigrants get jobs is because they have a good work ethic and are determined to start a new life in the U.S for i believe they fear life in other parts of the world and don’t want to go back. On the other hand I think homeless ppl who are from the U.S don’t really acknowledge the privilege they have thus they don’t do anything to better their life if that makes sense (not talking about all homeless people bcus I know some like the ones in this video are determined to change their lives positively) . Nonetheless, both parties deserve to be treated equally and I think this is a great thing the city of Fort Worth is doing.

    • @SB-qm5wg
      @SB-qm5wg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So homeless people are homeless because they're lazy and can't compete with low-paid Mexicans. Sure. I won't argue. But it would nice to get that same honesty from officials because it has to be one or the other.

    • @ericjaramillo1381
      @ericjaramillo1381 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      S B I guess you could say that but illegal immigrants can also be lazy. But I see a lot of homeless ppl under freeways and it’s some thing that our government has to take care of.

      Alana Weaver I remember hearing something interesting in my sociology class...I heard that illegal immigrants are beneficial to the U.S. because they do all the work regular Americans wouldn’t do, which is highly accurate. By that I mean agricultural work in harsh conditions. I do think that my professor did make sense. If it weren’t for them maybe the “organic fruits” we have today would be very short in supply. Then again this is just what I think. Opinions differ. But I do agree with you in some aspects.
