Certainly if you believe that to be true, you're welcome to write to your local lawmaker and ask them to change the law -- that's how democracy works! Or you're welcome to move to a state with lower or no sales tax -- that freedom of movement is one of the great things about this country.
But breaking the law just because you disagree with it isn't the way it works. Like I said, if I disagree with murder laws, can I go around murdering people?
The most insane part of counter-arguments here is people arguing in support of rich people driving expensive cars who are avoiding paying taxes that you yourself must pay. Deep yikes.
@@DougDeMuro I'd respectfully disagree about breaking the law because you don't agree with the law... That's how democracy/change happens. If you don't agree with a current law, you protest it by means you feel appropriate (even if other don't concur).

Why do you need to pay sales tax in the US if you're selling your private car to a private individual? The tax has been paid already. The car was sold new at some point.
After about 6 owners the government collects more tax money on the car than the manufacturer did.

I always find it interesting when people hold strong opinions on topics they have given very little thought to. The tax “evasion” topic has clearly not been thought of deeply by either of the three. Their argument basically boiled down to “… because big daddy government says so” and some dumb analogy about writing to your congress/senator and murdering people. 😂

Great! Then convince your state legislature of this, or move to a state where there are no taxes on used vehicle sales. You can't just break the law because you don't LIKE the law. The very people who use this argument ("Muh government won't get muh money!") would be the same people LOSING IT if everyone else started to only follow the laws they like.
No no no, you misunderstood. It's only reasonable for people in regular tax brackets to pay taxes. It was reiterated several times that only the rich have a moral argument to skirt taxes despite them having the means to pay those taxes without it affecting their lifestyle and being more likely to have the connections needed to get those laws changed whereas the poors need to move heavens and earth to get it changed despite it actually affecting their lives and not having the connections needed to effect change. And I'm sure that the same government that infringes on god given rights that are supposedly protected by the constitution is just waiting to hear a complaint from someone who makes $55k to change the laws to what they should be lol. Or you can live as a free person and do what is moral for yourself

On an individual level everyone is breaking laws everyday so you might as well live as a free man and do what's moral and benefits you. What doug mentioned wouldn't be moral to do. And no, not even close regarding the "muh" people. They wouldn't care what anyone does as long as they're not hurting anyone else. Makes me think you don't know any of those types of people and are basing that sentiment off of stereotypes. And we can tell it wasn't thought out well because 1 everyone breaks certain laws anyways and 2 everyone who's not an NPC has a line where they won't comply with every law just because the government says so

@@DougDeMuro Largely agree with all of your points but people totally can just break the law because they don't like the law. They're taking a risk but this Montana thing is a great example of people largely getting away with it and raising awareness of the issue much more than writing to representatives would, hence why you're talking about it in the first place. I think your "use the proper channels" argument is distracting from your good points. You're basically just saying "people shouldn't do illegal things" which is a cyclical argument.
YES!! The WORLD is not setup to have more than one home. That is for sure!!! I have a couple of cars at my log cabin in the Smoky Mountains. They're tagged in TN and insured with Tennessee insurance. My four cars that I have in CT are tagged in CT and insured in CT, yet my driver's license is in CT. I also have a vehicle in Alabama with the same setup. The insurance has to be separate. I have State Farm, Geico and Progressive as insurers. It would be nice to just have them as one.

At around 58 minute mark the conversation about the Chrysler Pacifica hybrid was spot on.
I just sold mine back to the dealer after three years one of them being at the dealer for a full year because they couldn’t find the problem. I did take the offer and kept ownership of the vehicle. I was going to hang onto it but on cold mornings, the windshield wipers would come on and not turn off until the car warmed up after about a 10 minute drive , this car still has my heart but not my mind. It is one of the greatest vehicles I have ever owned.

In the UK you only pay sales tax on the first purchase of the car new (unless it is an import). This is great apart from the fact that our sales tax is 20%. You also don't pay capital gains tax on cars which seems to encourage people to use it as an investment.
Additional context: I know it is VAT in the UK not sales tax in the US as it works slightly differently.
You don't have any tax when buying used? Some kind of civil contract or whatever?

@@cyjanek7818 nope, once you have paid tax on an item it is considered tax paid. Applies to pretty much everything including yachts. I think it is the same in the EU as well.
@@6272jac It is true in Europe, Britain is not alone in this.
The interpretation that not charging CGT on used cars (and other things!) is ENCOURAGING buying them for investment is a stretch.
@@6272jac It definitely isnt the same in EU because in my country there is a tax you have to pay, I think 2% of the vehicle value. It is similiar tax as when buying "second hand" house or anything "actually expensive and registered".

Fillipo, the descision to buy a Corvette is made with your heart, not your brain. You buy it because yo want it, not because it makes economic sense to do so.
To those of you with electronic dipsticks and want redundancy / a nanny check to make sure sensors aren't off....
My Porsche Cayenne Diesel had a plastic cap over where the the dipstick would go in the same engine in the Touareg version of the same car. Perhaps the Panamera Doug referenced and other cars have a similar workaround. It's worth looking into.
A lot of the Volkswagen group cars have them but I’m pretty sure the V10 in the Carrera GT does not have that spot for the dipstick since it’s designed for that car specifically.
I got a cheap scale and started weighing the evacuated oil to refill with same weight. Without the scale, getting the level right took the better part of an hour waiting for temps to come up, topping off, and waiting for the next level reading.
It’s weird how P cars can be a pain to do certain maintenance items while they’re generally very service oriented vehicles. After crossing that initial barrier of tooling and technique some of the easier cars to maintain independently.
Mercedes has kept the tube for verification too. Don't have to rely solely on the dashboard readout.
I saw someone use the Montana Loophole, to register a kei truck in Pennsylvania (they can’t be registered here). I think that instance is good use of the Montana Loophole

Filippo is 100% right - the c7 vette is the best modern sports car! It’s one of the very few (maybe the only?) modern sports cars that combines lightweight, an NA V8, manual transmission, RWD, analog driving experience, and open roof if you want it. And then there's MagRide which is an absolute game changer. All Corvettes have a certain image, I get that... but if you get past that, it's one of the best modern sports cars IMO. If BMW or Porsche made a modern car with that formula (lightweight, NA v8, manual, analog, RWD, etc etc) it would break the internet. But, I get the vette image isn't for everyone. I'm in my 30s and I do wish the image wasn't so mid-life crisis haha. But that all melts away when you're carving up a twisty road with the roof open and rowing your own gears the v8 echoing off the mountains. And I know we can debate whether or not it lightweight ... its no Elise, but compared to other modern sports cars, its lighter than even the V6 competition ie Supra, Nissan Z, 911, M4, F-Type, etc. Miata is obviously lighter but slow, the only car I can think of with any grunt that's notably lighter is maybe Boxster GTS. When I was shopping, I really didn't want the answer to be Corvette. I really didn't like the image, but the more I shopped and test drove cars, the more I couldn't help but think it's the best modern affordable sports car on the market.

yesterday evening in Geneva I saw a black F40 driving, I don't know with who to share it since my friends are not into car so I share it here lol. A black F40 is super super rare ! It was gorgeous and the engine noise with the coolest I ever heard
Generally the normal cars in Japan seem to taken well care of compared to the US equivalent. The same car in the same condition would be a lot more money compared to the JDM version.
A reliable plug-in, hybrid minivan would be awesome! I had a minivan in college and loved it. When we had kid 3 incoming we got an odyssey and have loved it for 10 years looking at alternatives and sienna is the best option I see. Maybe GM will do a hybrid suburban?
I may by in a minority but I like the BMW turn signal.

The corvette having a "stigma" is not universal. It depends on your location and social group. There is a stigma of some kind for most cars and brands. It's best to ignore it and buy the car you want. Drive and enjoy.

I'm obviously in a much more middle class type of space, but I feel like I've been seeing a lot of discussion on purchasing expensive cars and such lately. Probably because of the higher cost of living that we've all been experiencing for the past 2 years or so.
Personally I got tired of my (albeit small) monthly payment on my Elantra N. I have an NB Miata that I really enjoy as well and felt that the Elantra N was holding me and that I could have more fun with a cheaper car. Sold it for a Fiesta ST. I think I'll have a new/"expensive" car again at some point. But for now I'm enjoying the extra cash I got back from it and no car payment.

Sales tax on used cars is such a scam. Also the montana loophole is particularly useful if you live in a locality that has personal property tax (cough virginia cough) that you have to pay ANNUALLY on your car.
You should really look up the history of Virginia personal property tax on cars. It was enacted in 1998 because wealthy NoVa homeowners got fed up paying huge property taxes on their rapidly-appreciating homes, and FIERCELY wanted to transfer some of the burden to renters, who (in their minds) paid no property taxes. They lobbied the state legislature to decrease home property taxes and create an automotive property tax. It worked, and now the poor, the renters, and car enthusiasts are disproportionately overtaxed in Virginia. It's the worst state in the country for car ownership, by far -- much worse than California. Two plates required, safety inspection required, insane speeding laws, radar detectors banned. You even need to put expiration stickers on front AND rear plates, which is unique to Virginia. It's somehow the peak of classic liberal overtaxing and classic conservative overpolicing.
But your solution isn't to break the law by doing the Montana thing. If you don't agree with the law, you petition the General Assembly to transfer the burden back to homeowners and away from car owners, just like the homeowners did in the first place -- or vote with your feet and LEAVE Virginia. Maryland and North Carolina are not far away with similar economic opportunity and no such idiotic overtaxation and rules.
@@DougDeMuro Generally agree with this take, but not everyone has the political voice of a multimillionaire with an audience - changing the status quo takes lobbying. Likewise, not everyone is financially or socially secure enough to up end their lives and move because of discontent they might feel with fiscal policy. I say this as a taxpayer in Fairfax county with nice cars, I am willing to accept the tradeoff to live here.

@@DougDeMuro I appreciate the thoughtful response Doug! Yes, Virginia is the nadir for car enthusiasts in the United States, for all the reasons you mentioned. The same folks who lobbied for the personal property tax in 1998 I suspect are the same ones who (at least here in Arlington) staunchly opposed recent rezoning efforts to facilitate the construction of much needed multi-family housing (Nimby-ism at its absolute worst). Our governor has publicly spoken about potentially doing away with the personal property tax (fingers crossed). I do enjoy living here but it comes at a cost to be able to engage in our favorite past time - driving. Not planning on being here forever though, and thank god for nearby West Virginia and its immaculate, empty, and mostly un-policed roads. Love the pod. Please keep it coming.

I think a good idea for the intro of “This car pod” will be to show a bit of the studio/office/garage and then move to the table with three of you. Like Top Gear did in the beginning of each talk in the studio and they were showing the crowd, you will show the cars parked there.

I did Montana to avoid taxes precisely one time, when I was young and truly couldn't afford the car. Never since, even when I didn't have "tons of money." Can we all just take a second and really give it up for Filippo, He is really the voice of reason and also working in a different way than the other two. Doug and Cannon seem to be very reactionary, but Filippo is a big picture guy, taking the story, arc and timeline of uploading of his sports car testing which just recently occurred then is tying it in to this conversation as well. Very smart!
I agree with Filippo. I have a 1996 Pathfinder and 2011 Camry and would cry if I had to buy a replacement for either. I am in the Pacific Northwest so the lifespan is almost endless.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on: Cars whose design had to grow on you, but now you like them. I drive a 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback, and when the new ones came out Doug hated on the design, but I love them. I wonder if you've come around to it, or any others over time.
1:00:00 Honda Shuttle was my first car! Almost zero issues, and it was and still is super rare in Europe.
I think most Mercedes circa 2000 had a redundant oil check - I have a w163 Ml 320 and you can either check with the dipstick or dash - The w202 did and I think maybe the w210? - Either way I always just use the dipstick!
In virginia we pay around 1% tax on the NADA value EVERY YEAR. 😡😡😡

I could see doing the Montana registration. I'm in NJ, and if I want to try out different cars, say for a year or so, the biggest disincentive is the sales tax. I'm too cheap to pay 6.625% sales tax on a used car every year, assuming I buy from a private owner or a site like Cars & Bids. You can reduce the tax by trading the car in when purchasing from a dealer, but then you're paying one way or another.
Sticking in a key in an ignition and turning it is more satisfying than pushing a button.

Filippo--- the seats dont fold into the floor on the Hybrid Pacifica like they do on the regular Pacifica because of the battery, no good!

@@collincotter1007 Did you ever get to use the turn signals in the vaunted e39 5 series? It (and other old BMWs) had traditional turn signals that felt great to activate and (if I remember correctly) sounded nice returning after the turn was complete. My BMWs both have the “auto return” which don’t feel as nice to use but the “returning to neutral” thing never bothered me, Can’t say it’s something I ever even gave much thought to until Doug complained about it.

It's hilarious how big of a deal Doug always makes it out to be though, intentionally misusing them and making them look bad because he doesn't' like them. The function is actually quite simple yet people love to complain about it.

Totally agree WIth Keenan about the digital dipstick. But I do like how Mercedes provided the tube for manual oil level verification anyway. These episodes are getting cooler.
25:00 so living in Canada, where wind chill effect is a theme from December till February - you will hear on the TV and in the news constantly that equipment, cars, and materials can't feel WInd Chill only people and that's why its insidious and quite dangerous cause thermometer don't really tell you how cold it is in reality outside. Using the EXACT same logic, I would assume that hot wind from your cabin interior has nothing to do with the shifter being easier to shift or affect anything at all
The W203 C55 was 80mm longer from the A-pillar forward. So it is a *rare* 203 model for that alone. The super rare W202 C55 will most definitely increase in value!
My cars door latch frozen open this winter and I'm very glad that my car didnt throw it's self into park every time it recognized the door was open
I agree with Filippo. I have no need for one and never will, but I have always wanted a people mover (or minivan in us speak) being in my collection. For me it'd be a Kia Carnival or Toyota Alphard, just a big comfy vehicle for camping or weekends away etc.
The BMW automatic transmission lever and the selection mode instead of an actual lever with different positions.
California has cracked down on out of state vehicles. Now you have 20 days to use an out of state vehicle in California before you are required to register it.
I’ve not heard of anyone getting this enforced and I was late to get mine registered and nothing happened but that is the current law in order to prevent people from skirting the registration laws.
How about making the regulations and taxes less onerous so that people aren't tempted to go out of their way to avoid them? Radical idea, I know...
I’m not sure how that would really be enforceable if the car is registered to a company that’s out of state. That would mean rental fleets like Enterprise or U Haul would have to re-register their vehicles every time one came in over the state border.
Ahh California - never has the state looked at a dollar earned by someone else as anything other than their own.

BMW change the turn signal system to make it supposedly easier to reach and more visible. But you said guys it make it more complicated for many but not for me 😊
Owner of a GR86 and about the turn signals, it has never once bothered me that the stock returns to the center if you do a lan change. You get used to it and I honestly prefer it over signal stocks that move back on there own once you make the turn or cancel them manually. It is nowhere as confusing as on BMW's where the stocks won't cancel if you turn the signal the other way.

People, including you guys, are looking at the sales tax a little wrong. In Europe, it's not about whether the item is new or whether tax "has already been paid on it once" -- it's about whether it's a business or private transaction. In other words, it applies when it's sold by a business, but doesn't when it's just a dude selling his own car (and of course if a dude is buying and selling cars like a business, then that's a business). MEANING that the reason for the tax not just tax the TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP, but tax the activity that's PURE PROFIT GENERATION. It's a little more complicated than that, as you can still buy and sell at a profit as an individual in reasonable amounts, but the there's criteria for what constitutes doing a business as opposed to a private sale. So if a car dealer is selling a used car that's changed hands 10 times - sales tax (value-added tax) applies, but if you're buy a car, use it and sell it, regardless of whether there's profit, you're good. This makes sense. And that's what Californians should demand.
It is tax avoidance not evasion. If I am going to buy a product I want the best price. You don't get rich or stay rich by wasting money...
I get the impression a lot of the "regular traffic" JDM imports make it here because dealers are trying to fill a container. Consider the shipping cost is already sunk for the three cars they wanted, buying the Alto for $1000 and bringing it over starts to make sense.
